Using leftovers is a great way to stretch your grocery budget and eliminate wasted food. Potatoes are an especially frugal leftover, and these recipes should give you a few new delicious ideas!

Guest post from Jade Evans.
Can the potatoes you made last night make a great breakfast too? You bet your bottom dollar they can!
Whether roasted, boiled, or mashed, potatoes are the perfect ingredient to incorporate into a delicious morning meal that is healthy and super affordable too.
Potatoes are an excellent source of nutrition and have the complex carbohydrates necessary to keep you full and focused for at least a few hours.
Start your morning off right by enjoying one of these mouth-watering recipes!
Mashed Potato Pancakes
These are just like potato latkes, only in a slightly different form — and they are delicious.

Ingredients for Mashed Potato Pancakes:
- 2 to 3 cups leftover mashed potatoes
- 2 eggs (I used 1 egg per 1 – 1.5 c. of mashed potatoes)
- Salt and pepper
- Butter or oil of choice
- Sour cream, chives, chopped garlic (optional toppings)
How to make Mashed Potato Pancakes:
- In a medium bowl, mix mashed potatoes, eggs, salt and pepper together.
- Melt butter or heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
- Shape small portions of the potato mixture in your hands until they resemble a flat burger patty.
- Place potato “patties” into the pan and flip after 3 or 4 minutes, or when golden brown.
- Serve with sour cream or your favorite garnish/condiment.

Ask the Readers: Problems with mPLUS Rewards Program?
Today’s question is from Susan:
Through the years, I’ve earned a few thousand dollars from Swagbucks, and continue to use and enjoy the program. I’ve also had great success in the past with mPOINTS (now known as mPLUS Rewards).
However, I now have requested payouts for about $50 worth of gift cards in the past two months, and have not received my claim codes for any of these cards. I’ve reached out to the company’s customer service on multiple occasions, and have received no response.
Have any of you experienced a story similar to mine? This was once a great way to earn some extra money, but now I’m beginning to wonder if the company has gone bankrupt. If I’m not going to be reimbursed for my efforts with this program, I don’t want to waste my time. Thanks so much!

What I Wore This Week (Frugal Fashion)
This summer, I’m taking the Get Your Pretty On Summer Style Challenge.
So far, I’m loving this challenge and can’t believe how much it’s encouraging me to get dressed in a cute outfit every day, try some new outfit pairings, and just enjoy putting together looks. Plus, I LOVE the Facebook Group where women share their own variation of each day’s outfit.
I thought it would be fun to share a round-up of my outfits from this past week in hopes that it might inspire you with ideas and or encourage you to take a little time to mix and match items you already have to create some cute outfits!
(Want to see more outfits? See last week’s What I Wore post.)
Here’s what I wore this week:

It was rainy and dark this day, so the lighting is bad on this photo. I love this outfit, except I don’t love the jewelry. I thought I did — until I saw the picture! It’s too much and it doesn’t look like it matches.
Shirt: Amazon — no longer available in blue 🙁
Jeans: Zulily
Shoes: Amazon
Jewelry: Amazon and Kohl’s Clearance Rack

This outfit was so perfect for cleaning, hanging out with my family, running errands, grocery shopping, and a half day of blog/business work!
Shirt: Cents of Style
Shorts: Stitch Fix
Shoes: Amazon
Jewelry: Kohl’s Clearance Rack
I think these shoes are super cute, but I’ve decided they are not super cute ON me. That the style not only doesn’t work for shorts, I just think it doesn’t work for me, period. Which is sad, because I usually have really great success with shoes on Amazon. Oh well. 🙁

I wore a dress again today (something I rarely do!) I love that this style challenge is really pushing me outside of my comfort zone!
Dress: Stitch Fix
Earrings: Amazon
Shoes: Amazon
I’m not sure that I love this dress with these shoes, but I was trying to make it look a little more casual since I was wearing it all day.

This was by far my favorite outfit of the week. I just love it on all counts!
Shirt: Amazon
Jeans: Stitch Fix
Jewelry: Kohl’s Clearance Rack
Shoes: Zulily

This was a different style for me… it was the day I tried to go for a Victorian sort of mash-up look! 😉
I didn’t think I liked this shirt at all, but so many of you convinced me that it really looks good, so I think maybe it could grow on me. I don’t like how easily it gets wrinkled nor how high the neckline is (it almost felt like it was choking me!)
However, after seeing the photo, I know I don’t love the shirt with these shorts. I think it’d look cuter with white jeans or other light colored jeans.
Top: Amazon — it’s just $7 shipped on Amazon
Shorts: Stitch Fix
Jewelry: Amazon
Shoes: Zulily
Do you know what I’ve definitely learned from this challenge? That taking photos of my outfits every day and posting them feels very vulnerable but it’s also incredibly helpful because I’m learning more what styles I like, what works and what doesn’t work, and what an outfit really looks like. This has been fun and stretching for me, but it’s also causing me to step back and redefine some of my long-held style preferences and tastes.

This Week’s $47 ALDI Shopping Trip

I stopped by ALDI today and got some great deals (as always!):
ALDI Shopping Trip
- Mangoes — just $0.49 each (we’re not a huge fan of mangoes, otherwise I would have bought more!)
- Watermelon — $2.99 (I thought this was seedless because it was in the seedless watermelon bin, but it was actually with seeds. Oh well!)
- Organic Arugula — $2.49 (I eat this on salads almost daily and love that it’s so fresh and inexpensive at ALDI!)
- 3 packages of Strawberries — $1.49 each (I was excited for a deal on strawberries — my kids love berries and so do I!)
- 2 bags Frozen Broccoli — $1.19 per bag (I usually roast this with a little olive oil and seasonings. SO good!)
- 1 3-lb. bag of Boneless Chicken Breasts — $5.49 (We’re going to use this for chicken on the grill & Southwest Roll-Ups this week, since I already have salsa, tortillas, cheese, and beans!)
- 2 packages Beef Smoked Sausage — $2.19 each (We’re going to use this for Sausage, Sauerkraut, and Sweet Potatoes in the crock pot since I already have sauerkraut and sweet potatoes on hand and we’ll probably have enough for two dinners from this.)

New to shopping at ALDI? Read how we save close to $1,000 per year by shopping at ALDI.

I planned our menu based upon what we had on hand and what was on sale at ALDI… well, and what I was hungry for (hello, pancakes for dinner!)
We still need to buy 2 dozen eggs (we don’t buy them at ALDI as we buy the farm-fresh brown eggs at Kroger and we are down to 6 eggs) and we will also need to buy some veggies/fruit to bring to the barbecue on Friday.
I also ordered some honey from Amazon (using Swagbucks gift cards) since we were all out. And there’s a good chance I’ll stop by Kroger at least once or twice this week to see if I find any great markdowns.
But other than that, I think we have everything on hand we need to feed our family for the week.
This Week’s Menu Plan
Breakfast Options: Oatmeal and/or smoothies (I am having eggs, whole-wheat English Muffins, and fruit.)
Lunch Options: Cheese Quesadillas, Leftovers, PB & J, Snack-y Lunch (I will have a salad with canned tuna or salmon or hard-boiled eggs, plus whole-wheat bread.)

A Peek Into My Life This Past Week
Welcome to my weekly post where we take a break from money-related posts and I share about what I’m loving right now and give you a little peek into our life from the past week.
What I’m Reading
Right now, I’m reading: A Secret Courage, Fragments That Remain, Cleaning House, and God’s Whispers in a Mother’s Chaos.
I’m also reading The Upstairs Room aloud to the kids at night and we’re really enjoying it.
This past week I finished reading Nothing to Prove and found it really encouraging, inspiring, and freeing. I especially enjoyed the first few chapters of the book.
{See my Reading Goals for 2017. Also, see the 46 books I’ve read so far in 2017 here.}

What We’ve Been Up To
This girl has been cooking and baking up a storm recently. Almost every day, she tries a new recipe and she needs very little help from me.
I love being able to say, “Hey! Can you make bread?” Or, “Want to try this muffin recipe?” and then having it just get baked and done — without much oversight or input from me at all!
{Recipe shown: Pork & Miso Ramen with Asparagus & Marinated Cucumber.}

He went to Camp in the City at our church all this week — by himself! It was his first time to do anything like this without his sisters and I was a little worried how he’d do.
I thought about him all day long the first day and wondered how he was doing. When he got home, after his usual loud proclamations of, “I’m HOME!!!”, I asked how it had gone and if he missed us.
He looked at me kind of surprised and said, “Actually, I was so busy, I never thought of you once!”
My mama heart felt all bittersweet about that! Happy that he’s becoming independent. Sad that he’s becoming so independent.

What I Am Learning
The first few days of this past week, I was just plain tired. Three weeks of back-to-back traveling, walking through an emotionally draining season, + the stomach bug had taken its toll on me.
To make matters worse, I was frustrated at myself for being tired. Frustrated that I had so many things I wanted to do and needed to do and I felt like I was just hanging on and trying to keep my eyes open.
I realized that I was starting to take out some of my frustration on my family, too. And they weren’t doing anything annoying; I was just plain annoyed.
I saw the warning signs and — as I am learning to do — I stopped and paid attention.
I realized that I hadn’t given myself any quiet and white space after our trip to Kansas. Instead, I had come back home and jumped straight back into life — at full speed.
I also realized that I hadn’t been tracking my water intake ever since getting the stomach bug so there was a good chance I was dehydrated — which also makes me tired.
I wished I could take the afternoon off at that point, but I had multiple deadlines and things that had to be done. So instead, I gave myself permission to take an hour off.
I took a short nap. I went for a quick run. I drank lemon water. I made myself a strawberry smoothie. And, for one hour, I didn’t worry about my to do list.
Giving myself permission to have a Grace Break was just what I needed — and I ended up feeling so much better and energetic the rest of the day!
Oftentimes, when it feels like life is spinning out of control, we can’t take a week-long vacation — like we might feel like we need!
But we can stop and say, “What’s wrong? Why am I feeling this way? What can I do about it right now?”
Those simple questions can make a world of difference!

What I’m Grateful For
We met when I was 9. He captured my heart when I was just 14 years old.
He was my best friend from the time I was 15. He asked for my hand in marriage when I was 20.
15 years later… 6 houses, 5 businesses, 4 cities, 3 kids, 2 states, and still the same one heartbeat: to make an impact in this world together.
None of our life panned out like our big grandiose (and naive!) visions when we said, “I do.” But God had better plans for us than what we could plan ourselves.
He still makes my heart flutter. He’s still picking me up and freaking me out that he’s actually going to throw me into the water (because he has before!!). And he still makes me laugh until I cry.

Jesse, thanks for sticking with me through the good times and the really rough times. And thanks for not throwing me into the ocean this time! 😉
I love you always and ever and I’d marry you all over again! Happy Father’s Day!

What I’m Pondering
Hello, my name is Crystal and I struggle with Mom Guilt.
A lot. I mean, I even sometimes feel guilt over the fact that I have mom guilt.
Many nights, I go to bed feeling like I didn’t do enough with the kids. I probably should have played with them more. I probably should have asked more questions. We should have done more fun things. I probably didn’t listen as much as I should have. And oh! Did they eat enough healthy foods? Are they brushing their teeth enough? I should check to see if they’ve been drinking enough water… and on and on it can go.
I know that I shouldn’t have all this guilt. I know I need to give myself grace. I know I’m too hard on myself… I know all these things, but what if my kids get cavities because I haven’t had them brush their teeth enough or I’ve fed them the wrong foods?!?!
Do you see my problem? It’s ultimately that I want to control everything. I think if I do enough of the right things, I can keep my kids’ world safe and organized and neat and tidy.
But, as I’m slowly learning, I can’t bubble-wrap my kids or completely isolate them from pain and struggles and hard things and discomfort — no matter how much they brush their teeth or how many vegetables they eat!
And that’s why there is Jesus. He’s asking me to let go. To stop stressing over doing everything perfect. To stop believing that I’m the one who can control my kids or prevent them from difficulties or heartache.
He’s not asking me to aim to be a perfect mom, to check all the boxes, to make all the right choices. He’s asking me to rest and rely and fully lean upon Him. To look to Him for wisdom. To trust Him with my kids. And to leave my guilt at the foot of the Cross.
I don’t have to carry around the weight of feeling like I’m not doing enough, because He is Enough.
I want to rest in His Enough-ness. There’s no guilt there, only freedom… to love my kids well, do the next right thing, & leave the results in God’s hands.
The Carpet Beetle Update
So, remember that we had an infestation of carpet beetles in our car??
Many of you asked for an update, and I finally have one for you: after many weeks of getting it looked at by the car dealership, paperwork, and phone calls, our insurance TOTALED our car!
Yes, for real.
All the vacuuming, spraying, cleaning, and diatomaceous earth treatments did nothing because the larvae had burrowed into all of the flooring underneath the carpet and into the upholstery and laid their eggs. GROSS!!!
The final verdict: they said the entire car would have to be gutted inside and everything would need to be replaced in order to completely fix the issue. The cost for this: $30,000!!!
Obviously, the car was not worth anything close to that amount, so instead, they totaled the car.
However, they said that the car was otherwise in immaculate condition, so they ended up giving us $3k more than what we thought was the top dollar we could get if we were to sell or trade-in the car — without carpet beetles!
I just have to say a HUGE thank you to the internet for all your advice through this crazy saga. If it weren’t for some of your suggestions, we never would have thought to call our insurance and open a claim.
So, the power of the internet saves the day — and saves us (likely) thousands of dollars!
And we’re once again a one-car family while we take our time to look for a good deal on a used replacement vehicle!
How Bad Etiquette Can Cost You

Emily emailed in the following tip:
I have always believed that etiquette is for everyone… not just the elite. Etiquette, to me, is the culmination of advanced societal norms. It helps you feel comfortable in any situation, and, even more importantly, it helps you help others feel comfortable, as well.
Many people erroneously assume you must be wealthy to use etiquette — but this is completely wrong. Yes, etiquette does have strong ties to money, but probably not in the ways you might expect.
In my opinion, BAD etiquette can actually cost you money! Here’s how…
1. You may get into debt trying to keep up with the Joneses.
Etiquette helps you be a respectful, polite person — it doesn’t mean you need to pay to have all of your clothes monogrammed or that you need a full pattern of silverware in order to properly entertain guests. By thinking of etiquette as appearances instead of authenticity, many people assume they can’t “afford” etiquette.
2. You may not get the job.
I guarantee that if you and another candidate are equally qualified for a certain job but they show good business etiquette and you don’t, they’ll get the job every time. I’ve witnessed this many times. As an employee, we are the face of a company to the public and a business always wants to show the best.
3. You may lose repeat business.
Even if you get the job and “work your way up,” knowing proper etiquette and how to treat people will take you far in life.
One of the top complaints I get from business customers is when employees respond with “no problem” to a “thank you.” I know, I know, it sounds small. However, Chick-fil-a is well known for responding with “my pleasure.”
The little things really make a difference, and etiquette is something that can take you from good to great.
I hope you see that etiquette is truly for everyone and see how, aside from having a more polite society, there are plenty of benefits from utilizing etiquette in our everyday world.

I thought it would be fun to share a round-up of my outfits from this past week in hopes that it might inspire you with ideas and or encourage you to take a little time to mix and match items you already have to create some cute outfits!
Here’s what I wore this week:

Shirt: Amazon ($18 Prime)
Shorts: Zulily
Shoes: Amazon
Jewelry: Kohl’s Clearance Rack

Top: Amazon
Earrings: Amazon
Shorts: Stitch Fix
Shoes: Zulily

Top: Amazon
Shoes: Amazon
Shorts: Zulily
Jewelry: Kohl’s Clearance Rack
I think these shorts are a little short for the top or the top is a little long for the shorts, but it’s what I had, so I went with it!

Top: Cents of Style — it’s just $15.95 right now
Pants: Stitch Fix — watch my unboxing video of what I got in my most recent box here.
Shoes: Amazon
Jewelry: Amazon
This was probably my least favorite outfit of the challenge so far. I love the shirt. I love the pants. I just think they are too bland together. It needs a bright pop of color — more than the jewelry. Any ideas or suggestions? I’d love to hear!

Dress: Amazon — Just $16.99 on Amazon!
Jewelry: Kohl’s Clearance Rack (mostly)
Shoes: Amazon
I rarely wear dresses… so I am excited to be pushed out of my clothing comfort zone with the GYPO challenge. I’m not sure what I think of this dress, but it might be growing on me!

Wondering how Blue Apron prices compare to the grocery store? Check out this comparison review post! {Sponsored by Blue Apron. All opinions are my own.}
After my latest Blue Apron unboxing, many of you asked me how I think the prices compare to just shopping for the ingredients yourself. Truthfully, I have been really curious about this myself!
Because let’s be honest…most of us probably sign up for a meal delivery service like Blue Apron to save us time, not money. It’s convenient, and it can save a busy mama’s sanity during those weeks when you struggle to get a meal on the table.
Is Blue Apron grocery budget-friendly, though? That’s what I wanted to set out and discover for myself — and ultimately for all of you, my frugal-minded readers!
Blue Apron has many great things going for it:
- The ingredients are very, very fresh. The ingredients were delivered in a refrigerated box and I was impressed with how fresh they were for being sent by UPS!
- You get a choice in the kinds of recipes you want to receive (meat, fish, vegetarian, etc.)
- There’s a fun variety of recipes and an opportunity to try new foods. Some of the ingredients that we’ve received in our boxes have been outside our usual fare. If you like to try new things, this is a great way to keep your meals fresh and varied!
- There is no wasted food. They send you the exact amount of everything you need to make the recipe — so you don’t end up throwing out the extra food because you don’t have another recipe that calls for that ingredient before it goes bad!
- They offer a large selection of different recipes — all that are between 500 and 800 calories each. They are always adding new recipes to their line-up and do not repeat any of the same recipes for at least a year.
- All of the recipes can be made in 40 minutes or less. This seems like it’s pretty much right on.
- They offer two types of plans — the 2-Person Plan and the Family Plan.
- You can choose which day of the week your food is delivered to you.
- There’s no long-term commitment once you sign up for Blue Apron. You can cancel your subscription or skip weeks at any time.
- They are working to develop a sustainable food system and use high quality ingredients.
In my opinion, though, one of the biggest drawbacks of Blue Apron — especially coming from a frugal background — is that the prices seem really, really expensive.
If your family loves to buy expensive and unique ingredients or you typically go out to dinner multiple times per week, Blue Apron will probably be guaranteed to save you money and help your family eat more healthfully. {And I’m cheering you on, because I’m all about doing what’s best for your family in your unique season of life!}
But I had a gut feeling that since we usually cook from scratch and make simple meals in our home, I could probably save more money buying all of the ingredients myself. So I did a price comparison…
I made the Chicken Schnitzel with Fingerling Potato Salad and Marinated Napa Cabbage. (I accidentally showed the pork for the other meal in the photo above, instead of the chicken needed for this recipe!)
Here are the price of the meal ingredients if I were to purchase them at Kroger (these are regular prices, not sale prices):
- 4 Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts — $15.58 for 2 packages of Free-Range Organic Natural Chicken Breasts or $6.99 for a 3-pound bag of Kroger frozen chicken breasts (not at all as high of quality meat, but it would work) — in both cases, these would be a little bit more chicken than what they gave in the box
- 1 cage-free farm egg — $0.23 (1 dozen Simple Truth Cage Free Eggs are $2.79)
- 1 gala apple — $0.84
- 1 cup Panko bread crumbs — $1.49 for a box of Private Selection Panko Bread Crumbs
- 1 lb. fingerling potatoes — $2.99 (Kroger only had a 1.5 pound bag of Fingerling Potatoes for $3.99)
- 1/2 pound red Napa cabbage — $2.99 (Kroger only had green Napa cabbage and it was $1.99 per pound, but you had to buy a head for $2.99)
- 1 bunch chives — $2.29
- 2 Tablespoons rice vinegar — $1.69 per bottle
- 1/4 teaspoon caraway seeds — $3.99 per jar (You may already have this in your cupboard.)
- 1/4 cup mayo — $1.99 per container (You probably already have this in your fridge.)
- 1 Tablespoon dijon mustard — $1.19 per bottle (You probably already have this in your fridge.)
Total cost: Possibly as high as $32.98 + tax
Blue Apron Price for the same meal with ingredients shipped to your door: $35.96
Note: I’m not including the flour or olive oil in the price since you would more than likely have these in your pantry. Since you would more than likely use the eggs for something else, I only included the cost of the actual egg. And you likely already have the mayo and mustard and possibly the caraway seeds on hand, so you could remove that from the total.
You could also buy the less expensive chicken or find some of the items on sale, though I tried to go with store brands or the least expensive options in the prices shown above.
In addition, as you well know, I’m a big fan of planning meals based upon what is on sale at the store, what you have on hand, and what ingredients are regularly inexpensive. So I probably wouldn’t normally cook some of the Blue Apron meals because they require specialty ingredients that are expensive.
However, for some people, that also is what makes Blue Apron so fun — because you get to try new recipes, you get to cook with specialty ingredients that you might otherwise not ever buy, and you don’t have to mess with shopping for them or buying a big container of something only to use 2 Tablespoons!
In all honesty, I was surprised that the difference in price between buying the ingredients at the store and getting them shipped to your door from Blue Apron could be as little as only a few dollars difference. I would have expected the savings to be a lot more since you would are doing the work of planning and shopping yourself!
So if you are looking for convenience (having ingredients shipped to your door!), don’t want to mess with planning meals, you love trying new recipes and dishes, would rather eat at home than go out, and you have some wiggle room in your food budget, Blue Apron could be a great option to try out. And don’t forget to use the promo code below to save even more on your first order!
After your first Blue Apron order, there’s no long-term commitment. You can cancel your subscription or skip weeks at any time!
Have you tried Blue Apron before? If so, I’d love to hear what you thought of it!
Is Sling TV Worth It? (Plus, Get Started for FREE!)
Have you wondered what Sling TV is and whether it’s worth it for your family? Check out our honest review, the pros and cons, and all the options on how to get started for free!
(Psst! You can stream 300+ channels for FREE with Sling Freestream!)
Have you considered Sling TV or wondered if it’s worth the price? Hopefully this quick review of Sling will help you decide whether or not it’s right for your family!
Sling TV Reviews: What is Sling TV?
Sling TV is a paid service that lets you instantly stream the most popular live sports, shows, and movies for a low monthly price.
Whatever you’re watching is currently live — so you’re watching what would normally be playing on television. This is why so many people choose it as a cable alternative at a lower price.
What channels are on Sling TV?
Sling offers a huge variety of channels, and most of them are channels you’d have to pay for with cable.
Some examples include CNN, HGTV, ESPN, ESPN2, Food Network, Disney for kids, Lifetime, TBS, and TNT. You can browse ALL their channels here.
We’ve personally had a Sling TV account for the past six months or so and have really enjoyed it. We’ve never had cable TV, so this feels like an amazing luxury at a more affordable price!
Sling TV Cost – How much is Sling TV?
We initially paid for it so that Silas and Jesse could watch different sports on ESPN. But us girls love that we can get Food Network, HGTV, and the Hallmark Channel.
It’s also nice when there are major news events because we have access to multiple channels with live coverage. Plus, we can watch it on our TV, on our computers, or on our phones!
If you’ve thought about trying Sling, keep reading for a few of the pros and cons, based upon our experience and the experience of a number of my readers who shared their input on a Facebook Live video I did a number of months ago:
Pros and Cons of Sling TV
If you’re considering whether Sling TV is right for you, check out this list of pros and cons we put together!
Pros of Sling TV
:: There are no long-term contracts or hidden fees. You’re never locked in. You can easily cancel online at any time you’d like. This is my favorite thing about Sling! If we ever found we aren’t using it Sling enough, I love knowing that we can just hop online and cancel our subscription. It’s SO easy to do, and you can always resubscribe again at a later date. We initially signed up for a trial subscription and then canceled with no issues at all. We then later decided to subscribe so that the guys could watch ESPN. (See below.)
:: You can watch from anywhere on any device at any time. It’s accessible on your tv, tablet, computer, or phone.
:: It gives you access to sports. You might have everything you want with your other streaming services, but if there’s a sports fan in the family, you can bet there are some complaints about access to sports coverage. Sling TV allows you to avoid cable costs by sticking with your streaming services, but still gives you access to some of the sports you’re missing out on.
{This is one of the main reasons people sign up with Sling TV. With a husband who loves sports, this was the only non-cable option we could find that would allow him to watch some of the sports he loves so much!}
:: It’s really nice for world events. We’ve used it for post-presidential debate coverage on CNN and also for the Olympics! It’s really convenient to have live coverage for world events.
:: It’s significantly cheaper than most cable packages. Packages start at just $20 per month (for the first month) for 31 channels. You likely will not find those prices anywhere with a cable subscription.
:: You get access to HGTV. Okay, okay. I realize this might not be a “pro” for everyone… but our family adores HGTV. My kids and I really love it, and it’s something we enjoy watching together. I love having access to it through Sling!
:: It gives you options in more remote areas. If you live in a rural area where you can’t access local channels with rabbit ears, this is a really great budget-friendly replacement for cable.
Cons of Sling TV
:: According to some of you, reception can be spotty at times. I haven’t personally experienced this, but I’ve heard about this from a few of you, so I thought I’d mention it.
:: You might not need it if you live in a big city. If you live in or near a bigger city, there’s a chance you might be able to pick up quite a few of the local channels with simple rabbit ears and not need to pay for a service like this. It really depends on why you’re using Sling, though.
:: You don’t get to individually pick your channels. I really, really wish they had the option to pick only the channels you want and modify your price accordingly. For example, we pay for the $40 package that gives you access to 31 channels, but we only actually use a handful of those.
:: They don’t have as many news or sports stations as you get with cable. While Sling gives you access to sports and news, you still won’t have nearly as many options as you would with a cable subscription.
How to Get Started with Free Sling TV (& Other Options)
There are several options to get started, depending on what you’re looking for!

BLUE: 41 channels for $40: Many of the channels listed above, plus Nick Jr, National Geographic, NBC, Fox, Fox Sports, Syfy, and more. (This almost seems like the best option if you’re only using it for sports, as it gives you access to multiple extra sports channels.) Just be careful! This option doesn’t give you access to some of the popular channels you get with the $20 subscription.
ORANGE AND BLUE: 47 channels $55: This option gives you access to all of the 47+ channels they offer.
Psst! And remember you can get 300+ completely FREE live channels, tv shows, movies, and more with Sling Freestream!

A Peek Into My Life This Past Week
Welcome to my weekly post where we take a break from money-related posts and I share about what I’m loving right now and give you a little peek into our life from the past week.
What I’m Reading
This past week, I finished reading The Broken Way, DARE: The New Way to End Anxiety & Stop Panic Attacks, and More Than Just Making It.
The Broken Way really, really impacted me in a number of different ways. One of those was in the area of friendships. I wrote this as a result of how the book challenged me:
“We weren’t created to be loners; we were created for community.”
I’ve said this from stages and written it in posts. And yet, for years, I’ve worked incredibly hard to not inconvenience anyone around me, if I can dare help it.
I’ve gone way out of my way to avoid causing someone else to have to go out of their way.
I’ve struggled through many things privately and not shared them with those closest to me lest I add one more thing to their already-full plates.
I’ve put on a brave face and kept it together when I felt like my world was falling apart because the last thing I would want to do would be to be a burden to someone else.
But I’m slowly learning this is the road of loneliness and isolation.
If we want to develop authentic deep relationships, we have to spill out the vulnerable, broken parts of our soul and let other people in to the messy, hurting, raw spaces. And be a safe place for them to do the same.
It requires the willingness to inconvenience and be inconvenienced. It means we let others bear our burdens and we’re willing to bear theirs. It will result in disappointing others and in being disappointed ourselves.
But when we let others get close enough that our brokenness and messiness is on full display, they also get to see the most beautiful, intimate parts of our heart and soul, too.
And let me tell you, getting to experience that depth in relationship is so very worth being inconvenienced and inconveniencing others for.
Right now, I’m reading: A Secret Courage, Fragments That Remain, and Nothing to Prove.
{See my Reading Goals for 2017. Also, see the 45 books I’ve read so far in 2017 here.}

What I Reminded Myself Of This Week
This morning, I woke up before the rest of my family did and I immediately felt haunted by my inner critic.
“You haven’t made cookies with your kids in a long time!”
“You should make reading aloud with your kids more of a priority!”
“Your house isn’t as clean as it should be…”
And on and on it went. Until I said, “STOP! This is ridiculous!”
Sure, maybe I’m not doing what some other moms are doing. Maybe our house isn’t as clean as it could be. Maybe we’ve watched movies together instead of reading aloud the last few weeks. Maybe I’ve not prioritized cookie-baking.
Instead of letting my inner critic make me feel discouraged and defeated over what I’ve not done with my kids recently, I challenged myself to instead stop and celebrate the many, many beautiful moments and talks and adventures and laughs and fun we have had together recently.
And as I did that, I couldn’t believe how many I came up with! It made me smile and sigh a big sigh of relief to realize that while our lives might look different than others and I’m not prioritizing certain things right now, I AM prioritizing other things — like quality time with the kids, fun together, good conversations, and more time just hanging out and being together.
We can always find things to criticize about our life and our choices. And yes, there is always room for improvement. But beating ourselves up never accomplishes anything that ultimately helps anyone.
Let’s fire our inner critic and replace those thoughts with celebrating the good, the beautiful, and the memorable moments that are happening every day in our lives. Because they are there — if we will just stop to notice them!
(Family photo from Gallery By Laura)

We had a fun park date with friends one morning this past week where we explored, walk a trail, tried some geocaching, picnic lunch, and then went and got free Frosty’s at Wendy’s (the Preds scored 4 goals in their game this past week, so Wendy’s gave away Frosty’s in our area — no purchase required!)

And here’s a little peek into my never-dull life…
Some days, you just smile and hold on for dear life.
I was flat in bed sick as a dog on Wednesday. (Do dogs get sicker than humans? Is that why we say that?!? I don’t know. Regardless, I was sick as all get out and couldn’t keep anything down for hours! Yuck.)
We were supposed to leave to fly to Kansas for my brother’s graduation on Thursday morning. Only, I hadn’t moved from the bed for over 24 hours, so I told Jesse he was just going to have to go without me and maybe we could bump my flight to a day later since I was starting to feel human again.
So he showed up at the airport only to discover that the airline had only ticketed us for two of the five tickets we had bought. It actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise because it meant they were able to bump ALL of our flights to an afternoon flight without charging me for changing my flight.
But it also meant I had 2 1/2 hours to get out of bed, get presentable, get packed, get some must-do business projects done, and get to the airport on Thursday afternoon.
Jesse had taken an Uber to the airport since we now only have one car (that’s a long OTHER story involving carpet beetles & the insurance company!) and he offered to take an Uber back home so that I wouldn’t have to drive to the airport in my recovering-from-sickness state. I was all, “No, you stay put! I’ve got this!”
Of course, I then proceeded to take a wrong turn and get royally stuck in standstill construction traffic. Which meant that I made it through security and to our gate with literally 4 minutes to spare before the doors closed!! That was WAY too close for my comfort!
But I made it in time! And I had Jesse take this picture of me during our layover in Dallas on Thursday afternoon because:
a) I was excited that I wanted to drink tea after having zero appetite for almost two days
b) I love this new shirt & these shoes I got from Zulily
c) I knew I needed to share this story online. (I’m sure all the dozens of people walking by were wondering what this crazy woman was doing posing right outside of gate C11!!)
So there you have it. Another day in my never dull life! 😉
Psst! Something I’ve Been Loving
So, Allison who is the creator of Get Your Pretty On gave me access to her Summer Wardrobe Style Challenge after she saw that I talked about the Style Challenge that was available as part of the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle.
You guys, I am 100% surprising myself by how much I am loving this. I thought it was a great idea, but I didn’t think it would work for me since I am picky about styles and colors and didn’t think that having someone else pick out outfits and give me outfit suggestions would really work.
But I’m finding it to be so inspiring — especially when you see the variations of the outfits that women are coming up with in the Facebook Group. I’ll likely be sharing more about this in the coming weeks once I’ve tried it more, but I just had to mention it here as something that I am loving this week.
Also, my outfit in the airport photo above was totally inspired by the style challenge. I think it’s going to help me feel so much more put-together and also challenge me outside of my usual wardrobe comfort zones. I will keep you posted!
{By the way, if you are interested in checking out the Summer Style Challenge, Allison gave me a coupon code for you all! Use coupon code MSM10 to get $10 off!}

The graduation was beautiful… unfortunately, I lost all of my photos that I took on my phone of it except this one that I had saved in a different place plus the one below of the kids. I was so sad as I had gotten some great photos. 🙁
We loved getting to be with family, to see friends from Kansas we’ve not seen in a long time, and to get to go to my brother’s graduation party, too.

What I’ve Been Pondering
This week, we got the call. The call that we’ve been anxiously waiting for for three weeks
We’d been praying about this so much and hoping for a certain answer.
It had looked like some things were lining up in such an amazing way and we were so excited for how this was all going to work out.
And then we got the call… and it was the exact opposite answer of everything we had hoped for.
The miracle we’d prayed for and hoped for didn’t happen.
The door was slammed shut — and I felt like I’d been punched hard in my gut.
What do you do when the thing you’d hoped and prayed for doesn’t happen? When the answer is no? When your hopes are dashed? When the door slams shut?
You can be angry and upset. Or, you can rest that God is working in this and His plan is different — and better! — than what you thought was the best plan.
We prayed for an answer and we got one. We prayed for clear direction and we got it.
So I will trust that the God who created the clouds and the sunsets, the God Who has been so faithful in the past, He is going before us in this.
His best is always THE best, even if it doesn’t make sense at the time. And I can trust that someday, I will look back and understand why. For now, I am choosing to rest in His goodness, trust His character, and choose hope!
What I’m Learning
One morning this past week, I was feeling really overwhelmed with this whole parenting job. One child in particular had been mouthing off and acting out and I just felt like nothing I was saying or doing was making an difference.
I texted a friend: “…Wondering if I’m just totally failing as a mom and wondering what on earth I am doing wrong and what do I need to change…”
This friend texted back: “…Both you and Jesse are perfectly made to be {this child’s} Mom and Dad. Let the love that God has given inside of you flow freely. Let {this child} see Jesus in your actions.”
It was such a simple encouragement: stop stressing over what I need to do or not do, what I need to change or not change. Stop beating myself up or fixating on how I may I have failed or worrying about whether this child’s heart is ever going to change.
Instead, camp on the truth that God has perfectly equipped me with everything I need to be the parent of the children He has given me and focus on loving my kids like Jesus loves them.
“Love them like Jesus loves them.” That became my mantra yesterday and it completely changed my attitude and approach.
I pulled this child aside and shared what God has been teaching about how much He loves me. I asked them how they feel loved and how I can make them feel more loved.
We sat and talked and shared our hearts. They shared how they felt hurt and misunderstood in certain situations and they felt like no one really got it. I was able to share situations in my life where I felt the same.
It was beautiful and it gave me a profound window into this child’s heart and soul. I would have missed this had I been fixated on just fixing the issue.
Jesus cares most about our hearts. He doesn’t care that we have all our ducks in a row, that we do all the right things, or that we get it all right.
He loves us in our brokenness. He died for us while we were yet sinners. He still loves us when we fail and make mistakes.
Lord, let me love my kids like You have loved me.
