Join Jesse and I this week as we sit down together for a personal episode where we tackle some burning questions submitted by followers on Instagram and share some life updates. (Including a story about a recent travel mishap where we ended up locked out of our own house at 2 a.m.!!)
We kick things off by discussing our recent trip to Kansas for Easter — our first time to fly with all three younger kids in over a year. We went to a goat farm, connected with friends we hadn’t seen in a long time, and got to spend a lot of wonderful time with family. We also talk about a book I’m reading aloud to the kids, a tea I’m loving, and a freebie we launched recently.
And then we dive into your questions on marriage. We reflect on our marriage journey, sharing advice and revelations from over two decades together. We talk about daily flirting, how our lives have taken very different paths than we ever envisioned, how we’ve grown and learned to work together, whether Jesse has always been a nerd, who makes the meals, and much more. If you enjoy a peek behind-the-scenes of our life, you don’t want to miss this fun episode!
Also, don’t forget to check out my newly launched 10 Weeks to a More Organized Home resource! (And use code PODCAST to save!!)

Is it possible to afford organic foods on a tight budget? Yes! Keep reading for 20 ways to save money on organic food — even if you have a tight budget!

Many people have a misguided idea that eating healthfully requires a huge budget… but that’s just not the case.
Ok, well, if you live in Alaska or some remote part of the country, this might be true; but in most areas, you can feed your family natural, unprocessed, even organic foods without spending a fortune — especially if you’re willing to get creative and think outside the box!
Here are several ways to afford organic food on a tight budget:
If you want to feed your family on a budget, the first step is to have a plan for what you’ll eat. Regardless of your special diet or food preferences, meal planning will always save you money.
You’ll significantly reduce your grocery bill if you intentionally plan your menu around what’s on sale at the natural foods store, what’s in season at the Farmer’s Market, what organic foods are on sale at Aldi or your local grocery store, and/or what your garden is producing.
As an added bonus, you’ll reap the benefits of a balanced diet as you’ll constantly be rotating your produce based on what’s in season!
When you’re planning your menu, think about how much each recipe will cost. Cutting costs on a meal in general will create more wiggle room in your budget to prioritize organic items.
It doesn’t have to be a scientific, to-the-penny figure, but just having a good idea that there is a $10 difference between the price of making one meal as opposed to another meal can help with keeping your grocery budget down.
If your budget allows, stock up whenever you find an incredible sale on organic items. This could be organic tomatoes at the Farmer’s Market, markdown deals on organic produce/bread/meat at Kroger, reduced-price organic frozen veggies at the health food store, a super weekend sale at Sprouts, or if Aldi is offering a great deal on organic products.
Buying items you routinely use when they are at their lowest price is a surefire way to save more.

It is usually much more cost-effective to purchase meat and staple ingredients in bulk.
Call around to local farmers and see what they would charge you for purchasing half a cow. In many cases, this meat is at least $1 cheaper per pound to purchase in bulk. And the meat is a much higher quality.
Buying organic grains, beans, and other basic ingredients with long storage lives in large quantities will almost always save you at least 20%, if not more.
Environmental Working Group’s Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen lists are a great place to start when trying to prioritize organic purchases.
These lists will help you steer clear of the stuff with the most pesticides, and save money buying conventional when it comes to the cleanest fruits and veggies.
Produce is typically only pennies per item from your own backyard, it’s tremendously fresh and you know exactly what you did or didn’t spray on it. Plus, if you can or freeze your extras, you’ll be able to enjoy “fresh-from-the-garden” produce for much of the year.
Have a brown thumb? Find a friend who loves gardening and trade services (babysitting, bread-baking, car maintenance) in exchange for their garden excess.
If organic product is something you’d like to prioritize, you won’t find it at a better price than if you grow it on your own! It’s a fantastic option on a budget.

If gardening isn’t for you, you might look for a co-op or CSA in your area. They do usually have a fee to join the group, but it still might be a money-saving option on organic produce for your family.
And if you can’t find an affordable co-op in your area, you could consider starting your own co-op.
Serving meat in soup, on a salad, or as a pizza topping is going to be a lot less expensive than serving it as the main dish, especially if you’re buying high-quality organic and grass-fed meat.
Pre-packaged snacks are significantly more expensive than homemade snacks.
As a bonus, homemade snacks are often more nutritious as you can control exactly what ingredients you use.

It’s probably a better use of your cash to spend it on organic produce versus organic candy, fruit snacks, or other sweet treats that you don’t technically need to buy anyway!
You probably don’t really need Gruyere cheese… Swiss will do just fine!
And you likely don’t need that fancy (a.k.a. expensive) chocolate when store-brand chocolate chips will work.
If you’re using a recipe that requires a specialty ingredient you don’t already have in the house, do a quick Google search to see what you could substitute instead.
Repurposing leftover meals into lunches is a great way to save money on groceries and time in the kitchen. Not having to buy a lot of extras for additional meals can help save money — especially if you’re prioritizing organic items.

Although they are harder to come by, there are organic-based coupons available online. Also, take time to email your favorite companies, because they might just send you coupons by mail!
If you can’t find coupons for the organic food items you purchase, you can still use coupons to save on toilet paper, toothbrushes, and other non-food items — lowering your overall grocery costs.
Although they have great selections of unique items, you typically pay a lot more across the board.
Fruit and veggie smoothies are a great way to get your greens all year round. However, buying these ingredients organic 12 months a year isn’t always realistic.
Before abandoning organic produce all together, take a look in the frozen section and you may be surprised to find organic, frozen alternatives can mean fantastic savings.
And most frozen foods are frozen immediately after harvesting so they are packed with vitamins and nutrients that can sometimes be lost in fruits that sit on store shelves for a week.

They often sell lots of produce, breads, and cheese at reasonable prices — and they are almost always organic and homemade (and delicious!).
Most stores have their own brand of organic foods these days — saving you quite a bit on your overall bill without much difference in taste or quality.
Your local farmer’s market is a valuable resource! There are SO many local farmers who grow delicious, organic food for much lower prices than you’ll find at any store.
You can often find great deals on organic items at Costco, Aldi, or Trader Joe’s for great prices! You might also try Thrive Market for specific organic items you’re looking for.
If your family has allergies and has to stick to specialty diets, you might find some of these articles helpful:

We’re excited to roll out a brand new feature called What I Got Wednesday — where we share some of the best savings submitted to us by readers!

Check out the deal Kara scored on wallpaper!
“We bought a fixer upper four years ago. It is a very small house and I thought wallpaper would be excellent in the dining nook of the kitchen. The space needed something visually interesting that didn’t take up any space since the bench for the table touches this wall. I am part of a Buy Nothing group in my neighborhood (buynothingproject.org) where we give and receive items for free. One day someone offered five rolls of Serena & Lily wallpaper that they had bought and then decided not to use. She gave it to me and I couldn’t be more thrilled how it turned out. $640 saved!”
We had a couple of other great submissions from readers who scored great deals. Check them out below!

Ilana got cash back on gas:
“I have $29.65 in my Upside app from using it when I gas up! Sam’s Club is usually the cheapest around, but sometimes I can’t stop there, so I make sure to stop somewhere that will give me cash back. Sometimes it’s as much as 10 cents to the gallon!”
Psst! You can sign up for the Upside app here.

Sarah got some great savings on snacks:
“I got $15 off a $35 purchase through Amazon of General Mills snacks for my family!”
Thank you so much to these readers for sharing your savings with our community! How inspiring!!

{Still smiling after being out of the country for 10 days and just having traveled for over 24 hours straight!}
This week’s podcast guest is Kaitlynn (my 16-year-old!) who is here to discuss the details of her unforgettable trip to Singapore and Indonesia! Join us as Kaitlynn shares exclusive insights into her trip, talks about why she chose to go on this trip, and all the highlights (and a few lowlights) of the experience.
The trip started out rocky with a delayed flight that caused their group to miss their a 17.5-hour flight to Singapore and end up stranded in San Francisco at 2 am in the morning! Kaitlynn recounts some of the things she felt and learned and some unexpected fun in the midst — including impromptu volleyball games in airport terminals! She also shares how the unexpected adventures brought more camaraderie.
In Indonesia, they spent time in a remote fishing village helping build a retaining wall, in addition to a Survivor Challenge and a hike in the jungle. In Singapore, they got to enjoy the bustling city life and vibrant culture while exploring the city. Some of her favorites from her time there were the rooftop restaurant and iconic landmarks like Marina Bay Sands and the electronic Supertrees.
We close out the episode with Kaitlynn reflecting on the lessons learned and the lasting friendships forged.

Looking for the best way to save money at home? Or just looking for ways to add a little wiggle room to your budget? Check out this HUGE list of 55+ ideas you can start implementing TODAY!

I’m always looking at ways to save money around our house — ideas that won’t require tons of effort, but offer a good return on my time investment.
Many little things can indeed add up to big savings, and thanks to great advice from our Facebook followers, we’ve compiled a bunch of simple ways you can save more from home!

Psst! Need help with menu planning? Check out our FREE week of menu planning completely done for you!
1. Plan a week of meals based on ONLY what you have in the house — you’ll save a bunch on groceries that week! We call this an “Eat from the Pantry Challenge” at our house and it’s fun to get creative and see how long you can stretch what you already have on hand!
2. Stick to the grocery list after you make it. Avoid impulse buys!
3. Eat meatless meals one day per week (or more if you can).
4. Drink tap water instead of other expensive beverages.
5. Brew your own coffee at home (you can even use fancy creamers — it’s still way cheaper than buying coffee at a coffee shop every day!)
6. Add a little extra rice, pasta, beans, or legumes to your soups and casseroles to stretch the meals a bit further.
7. Turn leftover veggies into soup. Store them in your freezer until you’re ready to make soup!
8. Use a slow cooker as often as possible to save on electricity. (Plus, you’ll save lots of time in the kitchen!)
9. Buy snacks and ingredients in bulk (not individually packaged).
10. Eat leftovers for lunch instead of going out or making another meal. You can also eat leftovers for dinner once per week!
11. Buy meat in bulk from the butcher or local farmer (like a quarter of a cow). The upfront expense is more, but much cheaper in the long run.
12. Take brown bag lunches for school and work, instead of getting hot lunch or going out to eat.
13. Cook and bake from scratch when possible to save on costly pre-packaged foods. Try your hand at homemade breads and snacks. This can save you SO much money!
14. If you enjoy hosting events at your home, stick with desserts or snacks instead of providing a full meal. Hospitality doesn’t have to break the budget.
15. Eat at home as much as possible. Avoid takeout. Need help with meal ideas to so that you avoid takeout? Grab our FREE list of 60+ Super Quick Meal Ideas!
16. Plant a garden and grow your own food!
17. Try making freezer meals ahead of time with ingredients that you bought on sale at rock bottom price. (You can also freeze many individual ingredients for later use.)
18. Shop at ALDI. Many families swear by ALDI prices, even with how much grocery prices have risen over the years. (We personally love ALDI and have used it for years and years!)

19. Hang dry your clothing instead of using a dryer. This will save on your electric or gas bill, plus extend the life of your clothing!
20. Use cold water to wash your clothes to save on your electricity bill.
21. Wear clothing 2 or 3 times before washing.
22. Open the door on your dishwasher during the dry cycle. The heat/steam that has accumulated while washing will dry your dishes.
23. Make your own cleaning products and laundry detergent — it saves money and reduces chemicals in your home!
24. Use vinegar as a cheap way to clean almost everything!
25. Reuse plastic grocery bags for your small trash cans.
26. Change your furnace filter regularly to keep it clean and so the HVAC system doesn’t need to work as hard.

27. Only wash your hair every 2-3 showers to save on product. (I only wash my hair once per week!)
28. Use up sample size or travel size products before buying more full size products.
29. Watch YouTube videos to learn how to do haircuts at home for your spouse, kids, and even pets. You’ll save a ton in the long run!
30. Buy thrift store clothing and have fun altering it or tweaking it at home to create something unique.
31. Try an at-home hair color kit from the drugstore instead of paying for an expensive salon visit.
32. Do your own nails at home.
33. Take care of your health! Eat nutritiously and get daily exercise — you’ll save a bunch on medical bills later.

34. Cut the cable. Cancel subscriptions and memberships you don’t need or don’t use as often as you thought you would.
35. Use a “dumb phone” instead of paying for an expensive smart phone and monthly data usage.
36. Contact your utility companies and ask for a discount or lower rate. You’d be surprised how much you might save!
37. Try a smaller phone company instead of a big name company. They often have reduced rates that are more affordable.
38. Keep your home a few degrees cooler in the winter and a few degrees warmer in the summer to save on utilities.
39. Turn off all lights and unplug appliances when not in use.
40. Turn the heat down (or off) at night (depending on where you live).
41. If you have a programmable thermostat, set it to a schedule.
42. Open the windows to cool off the house when possible.
43. Learn to do maintenance and home repairs on your own. (Try YouTube!)

44. Sell things you don’t need on Facebook Marketplace, on Ebay, or by hosting a garage sale.
45. Buy store brands instead of brand-name products.
46. Shop the sales. You can find just about anything you need on sale at some point. It’s very rare you should have to pay full price for groceries, clothing, personal care items, household items, etc.
47. Use coupons and savings apps. Though couponing has changed over the years, you can still save quite a bit of money using mobile coupons and savings apps like Swagbucks, Fetch Rewards, Ibotta, and more!
48. Use “junk mail” envelopes the next time you want to mail something. (Instead of buying brand new envelopes.)
49. Use “scrap” paper for printing.
50. Keep your paperwork and bills organized so you can immediately detect if there’s a financial issue.
51. Trade babysitting with neighborhood families.
52. Group errands into one chunk of a day to save time and gas.
53. Do your own yard work and snow clearing instead of hiring it out.
54. Enjoy at-home activities like reading, playing games, a bonfire, movie night, etc. instead of going out. You can have so much frugal fun at home together as a family without having to spend a lot of money!
55. Walk, run, or exercise with neighbors instead of joining a gym and paying the membership fee.
56. Just stay home (instead of shopping or going to a restaurant or out for coffee). Staying home in and of itself can save you so much money in the long run!
57. Challenge yourself (and your family) to a “no-spending period” (a day, a week, a month) where you don’t spend anything other than absolute necessities (utility bills, gas for the car, food, etc.).
58. Track spending and budgeting. You’d be amazed how much money you can save simply by tracking what you actually spend and discovering where all your money is going each month.

Meal time just got so much easier!

We’re excited to roll out a brand new feature called What I Got Wednesday — where we share some of the best savings submitted to us by readers!

Check out the deal Tammy scored on clothes for her college aged daughter! Wow!
“My daughter is a college freshman at a large university. They wear Altar’d state and Lululemon. I love these brands but as a family of five can’t always afford it! When she was home for break we found some great deals for a reasonable price! I also found a few items similar to name brands that she can wear! The peach dress is from JCPenney for $59 but marked down to $39 – plus, I had rewards! The pink and white dress is from Dillards and I paid $69 but it’s much cheaper than similar items. The white jacket is an Amazon brand but lasts and is similar to Lululemon. It was only $30 on Amazon!“
We had a couple of other great submissions from readers who scored great deals. Check them out below!

Etelvina scored the FREE Easter Lego Set that we posted a few weeks ago:
“I bought the Easter Lego toy from Walmart & saved $15.99!”

Heather got a great deal on Adidas shoes:
“I just bought three pairs of adult Adidas shoes for only $94.60, including tax! I saw the deal you posted and knew I needed to check it out. I’m always on the lookout for good prices on shoes for teenage boys and my own pair of athletic shoes are wearing out. After using the 50% off code on top of the sale, as well as getting free shipping, I scored a great deal! I had $80 in my PayPal account from my friend who paid me back that way from something I ordered for her last month, so only $14.61 went on my credit card. Of course that’s including girl math, but it still feels great!”
Thank you so much to these readers for sharing your savings with our community! How inspiring!!
