I love the idea of making my own laundry soap/detergent but I have a SUPER sensitive family. Does this recipe work with skin sensitivities? Are there recommendations for substitutes? I don’t want to do a whole lot of experimenting on my own at this point (8 months pregnant with my 3rd) so if anyone has tips, I’d love to know!

Ok so… (probably newbie dumb question) if I currently use Tide (liquid) in cold water, but was interested in making my own I should look for a laundry detergent recipe?Anyone have any good recipes for newbies that are good with removing stains (I have a little boy who loves dirt). Thanks! 🙂

Hi Nichole ~ I also have boys who love dirt, and anything else that is messy. I used to make a liquid detergent but several months ago I found a dry recipe THAT IS AWESOME!!!! It smells good too 🙂 For me, it got out the dirt/grass/spaghettio, etc. stains that we deal with on a daily basis. It is also cheap and one batch is supposed to last an entire year!!! I have the recipe on my blog. You can see it here: http://teaching2stinkers.blogspot.com/2013/06/homemade-laundry-detergent.html#more
I love it so much that I just made another batch today, and I have a scheduled update for it tomorrow on the blog. I never buy laundry detergent anymore! I think works as well, if not better than tide! And… it keeps that yucky gunky smell out of your washer because the borax is a natural anti-mildew agent. This recipe is also safe for HE. 🙂 Hope that helps/answers your question! There are tons of recipes out there, but this one is by far, hands down, the greatest one I have ever used. I even give it as gifts at Christmas! Cheap and useful 🙂

Hi Nichole ~ I have two little boys who love dirt, and anything else that is messy for that matter! I found a recipe several months ago that I tried and LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! It is a powder recipe and I think it cleans AWESOME! It smells good too. One batch is supposed to last around a year. WOW! I just made up some more today, which is why this blog post caught my attention. I have tried several recipes and this is by far the greatest one! I have an update on the batch that I just made going up tomorrow on my blog (I had to make more because I also use this for gifts. Makes for a great and cute gift)! I have the recipe and previous post on my blog here: http://teaching2stinkers.blogspot.com/2013/06/homemade-laundry-detergent.html#more
Hope that helps! I totally understand boys and laundry! It is hard to be beat Tide, but I think that this recipe does it and it is A LOT cheaper! 🙂

Sorry that comment posted twice ~ My computer crashed before it submitted so I didn’t think it went through! LOL I can’t delete it!

Keep in mind that this recipe is for a laundry *soap*, not a detergent. Be careful- laundry soaps only work well with certain types of water.

Thanks so much for mentioning that!

You’re right, this is a soap, because the Zote soap used is actual soap, not detergent. This laundry soap can work with all types of water if you tweak it. I explain what all the ingredients do, and how you can make them work with your water type, here:
