How to Download Free Ebooks Without a Kindle
One of my secrets to finding time to read every day is that I often have at least one ebook that I’m currently reading that I take with me on-the-go.
You never know when you’ll find yourself in a situation with 3-5 minutes of extra minutes of spare time. I love being able to pull up my current ebook and get some quick reading time in during those short windows of time that might open up while I’m stuck waiting at the doctor’s office or waiting in line. And it’s surprising how quickly you can get through a book by doing this!
As you probably know if you read here regularly, there are hundreds of free ebooks offered daily on Amazon. Almost every week day, we post a round-up of some of the best free ebooks we find each day.
I’ve had many people tell me they skip over the free ebook posts because they don’t have a Kindle or other e-reader to read the ebooks on. Well, guess what? I don’t have one either!
A lot of people don’t know that you don’t need a Kindle or other e-reader to be able to download the free ebooks offered on Amazon. All you need is to simply download the free Kindle Reading App to any mobile device (phone, iPad, etc.) or even your laptop or desktop computer!
Here’s how to download and use the free Kindle Reading App:
1. Decide which device you’d like to read your free ebooks on (computer, phone, etc.)
2. From that device, click on this link to download the free Kindle Reading app. (You can do this for multiple devices. For example, I have the app on my laptop computer and my phone.)
3. Login to your Amazon account.
4. If you are on a computer: you will receive a pop-up that asks you to enable offline reading. Click on the “enable offline” button to download the app to your computer.
5. If you are on a phone or mobile device: you will automatically be taken to the app store to download the Kindle reading app to your device.
6. Next time you want to take advantage of a free ebook or buy an ebook, you’ll see a little box on the right side of the Amazon page that gives you an option to “deliver to” with a drop-down menu of all the devices you have the Kindle Reading App installed on.
7. Select which device you’d like to have the ebook delivered to, and then click on the “Buy now with 1-click” button.
8. All of your ebooks will show up in your Kindle Reading App on your chosen device.
9. You can choose to have them stored in the Cloud or on your device. I recommend storing them in the Cloud so that you don’t use up all of the storage memory on your device. I keep all of my ebooks in my Cloud, and then I download them one at a time to my device when I’m ready to read them. This allows me to access the current book I’m reading at all times — even when I don’t have access to Wi-fi.
See how easy that is?

7 Places To Find Coupons Without Buying A Newspaper

Guest post from Lanise of Earth Angel Writings
When I decided to start couponing (about three years ago) I would see all the savings many women were posting online and all the stockpile they had… and I wanted in!
Yet, when I did the math, being an extreme couponer wasn’t worth the time and effort for my small family. Newspapers cost $1.50 each, and I knew that I definitely needed more than one! My budget was just too tight for me to justify spending money on a newspaper subscription or buying tons of newspapers at the store.
I still wanted to save money on my weekly groceries and other household products, but I didn’t want to spend a lot of valuable time clipping and sorting tons of coupons. In my quest for savings, I discovered some simple places to find and use grocery coupons (and more). These savings tips are perfect for the beginning couponer (or the “I don’t have time for that” shopper).
1. Open your mail.
Instead of tossing mailers in my recycle bin (as usual), I started to see what coupons I could find. I discovered coupons for local businesses, stores, and restaurants in my community.
2. Check free community papers.
Does your community distribute a free weekend edition of your local newspaper? For years, mine was just thrown in my driveway every Saturday morning. I would leave it outside on my lawn until one of my neighbors snagged an extra copy.
One day I picked it up. Yep, coupons! The same manufacture’s coupons found in that week’s Sunday newspaper.
3. Download store mobile apps.
Are you taking advantage of your grocery store’s digital coupons and savings programs? Most of your local grocery stores and pharmacy stores have their own mobile apps and text subscriptions that allow you to download digital coupons right to your store’s savings card or account.
4. Check company websites.
I buy a lot organic/natural foods, and coupons are not readily available in the Sunday’s newspaper. I started to check company websites of my favorite products. Many coupons were located right on the company’s site ready to print. I signed-up for their email mailing, too, and found they sent more coupons right to my inbox!
I have even solicited companies via email requesting coupons. In doing this, I have received coupons for free products and free samples in the mail. This only takes a quick minute using the company’s contact form!
5. Visit coupon centers.
My local library has a coupon center where patrons can take desired (clipped & unclipped) manufactured coupons. You can leave unwanted coupons for other patrons as well. I find a lot of hot brand coupons here; especially when I want extra coupons for that week’s hot sales item.
6. Look at your local grocery store.
This is a “no-brainer”; yet, you really need a keen eye. On your next grocery shopping trip, keep an eye out for extra coupons. Check store displays, look in the grocery aisles, and right on the product. And don’t forget to grab those Catalina coupons that print out at the register.
7. Follow good savings blogs.
This is my new favorite thing to do. I love checking my daily saving/deal blogs for the best coupons, free samples, and online deals. These blogs post featured deals on groceries, clothing, and other household products. Plus…they have a searchable printable coupon database (I only print the coupons I will use).
I find that by checking these places to find coupons, I have a more manageable amount of coupons to save on my weekly food budget and I’m able to keep a nice stock-up of the products and brands that my family likes.
Couponing has become a fun “no-stress” routine! And I rarely have to purchase a newspaper!
Where do you find the best coupons?

One simple way I get more reading in every day (Go to Bed Early Challenge: Day 15

People often ask me how I find time to read. It changes in every season, but right now, one way that I’m getting consistent reading in almost every single day is by starting my day with time in God’s Word and a little time in a good book.
I usually get up at least 30 minutes to an hour before the rest of the family and this early morning time is a sacred, soul-filling oasis for me.
I light a candle, make a cup of coffee, write in my Gratitude Journal, spend time reading and journaling as part of the She Reads Truth study, pray over my day/for people & situations in my life, and read at least 5-10 pages of an encouraging book.
All of this usually only takes me 25-35 minutes, but it starts my day in such a calming, quieting, refreshing way. It also guarantees that — even if I have a very full rest of the day — I’ve gotten in a little reading. And those 5-10 pages of reading every day add up to at least one finished book every month!
I just finished Finding Spiritual Whitespace yesterday (it was SO, SO good — just what I needed for this season) and am excited to start Roots & Sky today!
(It’s Day #15 of the Go to Bed Early Challenge and I’m happy to report that I was in bed by 10 pm last night and got the best night’s sleep I’ve gotten all week long — yay!!)

4 Things to Do When You Wake Up Feeling Exhausted

Have you had those mornings where you wake up feeling utterly exhausted? I definitely have! It has been a goal of mine to make sure I’m getting enough sleep every night so that my body isn’t tired when I wake.
There is more to waking up feeling tired. I often find that we confuse being physically tired with having hit a point of burnout. Maybe the feelings you are dealing with in the morning have little do with your sleep habits, and everything to do with your mind habits.
If you are rolling out of bed each day already feeling defeated, it is no wonder you want to pull the covers over your head and dip out of existence for a while longer.

I want to give you 4 things you can do when you wake up feeling exhausted.
1. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
I know what you are thinking, “What does comparing myself to others have to do with exhaustion?”
Well, it has a lot to do with it! We can exhausted spending all day long trying to live up to what we think everyone else is doing.
Have you ever thought: What is my problem? Why can’t I get my act together? Why can’t I be doing more? I should be doing more like that person over there. Look everything that person can do. Why can’t I be like that?
We can exert so much mental energy beating ourselves up for not measuring up. This does nothing but make us more tired and worn out. As an introvert, I have a smaller capacity to go-go-go than extroverts do. I cannot just pour, pour, pour into other people all day long and not take time to slow down, breathe, and have some quiet.
By getting over the guilt of being an introvert, I can take the time I need to replenish myself which allows me to live life feeling much more refreshed and energized.
Accepting who I am has allowed me to understand that we all have different needs, and it is okay if I can’t get as much done as someone else. Everyone has their struggles that they are dealing with. And that person whom I’m looking at and wishing I could be like is probably feeling like they don’t measure up in some areas, too.

2. Replenish Your Supply
All of us have people whom we pour into on a daily basis. This could be your spouse, your kids, your co-workers, your extended family, your friends, and on and on the list goes. You have to be intentional about filling yourself up if you want to have something to pour out to others.
Filling yourself up might be:
- Reading a book you enjoy.
- Listening to a podcast that you find interesting.
- Playing uplifting music.
- Counting your blessings.
- Taking time to write in your journal.
- Enjoying a cup of coffee in the quiet.
What fills your soul? Give yourself permission to make that a priority.
I know you are thinking, “I have too much to do each day to spend time on myself”. I get that, and for a long time I tried to run like crazy without filling myself up back up.
Guess what? My health took a toll, my marriage felt the strain, and my kids were getting leftovers instead of my best. I’ve been able to handle things so much better since I find ways to rejuvenate myself each day.
How much of your day are you spending doing things that drain you? Are you doing anything in your day that puts life back in you?
Even if you take just 5 minutes a day to do something that energizes you, it is worth the effort. You’ll be amazed at how much of a difference it can make!
3. Let Some Stuff Go
People ask me all the time how I get so much done in a day. Honestly? There are a lot of things I choose not to do so I can give more focus to a few things.
While I was writing and launching my book, Money-Making Mom, Jesse took over a lot of the cooking and menu-planning. He wanted to try it and we discovered that he’s really good at it and really enjoys it.
My kids help out with laundry and daily cleaning. We pay to have a cleaning service come in once a week and deep clean our house. And we recently hired on a mother’s helper to come in two mornings a week to help with tasks around the house, watch the kids while Jesse and I have meetings, oversee some of the homeschooling (she has her degree in education!), and to even enable Jesse and I to get in a lunch date now and then.
I can’t do it all. I don’t do it all. In order to say “yes” to something, you are saying “no” to something else. Figure out what your main priorities are, and let some of the other stuff go.
4. Give Yourself Grace
Finally, give yourself grace. There is no way you are going to get everything done in a day. No matter how much you accomplish, there will always be other projects and tasks that need to be completed in the days to come.
Instead of focusing on all of the things that you didn’t get done, focus on your progress. Celebrate what you accomplished — not what you didn’t get done.
Give yourself some breathing room in life. Even if you have a mountain of things that need to be done, take a few minutes to rejuvenate yourself. In order to break the vicious cycle of feeling exhausted all of the time, you will need to learn your limits and stick within them.
What helps you on those days when you wake up feeling exhausted?
Want some practical help with setting up your day for success? It all starts the night before! Be sure to grab a copy of my brand-new online course, Make Over Your Evenings.
This 14-day online course includes videos, a workbook, and step-by-step projects and is designed to help you maximize your evenings in order to experience more success in your life, more order in your home, and more joy in your soul.
It’s time to stop sleep-walking through life and wake up to the amazing excitement and fulfillment that comes when you follow my simple plan to Make Over Your Evenings.
A laundry “system” that’s actually working for us (Go to Bed Early Challenge: Day 14)
A laundry “system” that’s actually working for us (Go to Bed Early Challenge: Day 14)

One way I start my mornings well is by checking to see if a load of laundry needs to be started or switched.
Kathrynne (11) is in charge of bringing all the laundry from the hampers to the laundry room and starting the laundry everyday and then I help out by switching loads or starting an extra load, as needed.
The kids and our wonderful mother’s helper take care of folding and putting all the laundry away on Mondays and Thursdays when she’s here (they usually have around 3 loads to do because we’re averaging doing 6 loads of laundry per week).
Laundry is something I’ve always struggled with (as longtime readers well know!), but these simple things have helped us to really stay on top of it in this season.
I’m not sure whether that means I’m getting more organized or whether it means I’m just getting better at delegating or whether it’s just the fruit of my kids getting older, but any way it is, I’ll take it! ?
(It’s Day #14 of the Go to Bed Early Challenge and I kind of failed last night… I had Wednesday Bible study and then a few work projects that needed to be taken care of and then I took a bath, read a little, and hung out with my husband — and didn’t get to bed until a little after 11 pm. The good news? 11 pm felt SO late! Tonight I’m very determined to do a better job and wind down early!)
Do YOU have a laundry system? Tell us about it! And how’s the #GotoBedEarlyChallenge going for you??

4 Ways to Be a Great Friend
In case you missed it, I had such an exciting and fun weekend in January visiting MacKenzie from Bold Turquoise! My husband sent me away for a girls’ weekend in Washington state, and I was so thrilled to finally meet my online friend MacKenzie in real life!
We’ve both received many questions on how to find good friends and how to be a good friend, so the two of us decided to scope about this topic together.
Here are some of the thoughts the two of us had on how to be a great friend:
1. Be Honest and Transparent
There were two things MacKenzie did early on when we first started getting to know each other that helped me know she would be a really good, safe friend for me.
First of all, she was very honest. One of the first e-mails she ever sent me was gracious and constructive advice on how to be a better scoper. I loved that wanted to offer help in an area that she had more experience in than I did but that she did it in a very gracious manner. This spoke volumes of her character and I was so appreciative of this helpful honesty.
Secondly, she told me that she was committing to be my friend and to never ask anything of me. She promised to never ask me to promote anything that she wrote, did, created, or produced. Again, this showed me so much about her heart. (More on this in point #2.)
Mackenzie also brought up a great point on our scope about being honest about who you are as a person. It can be so easy to hide behind the screen in online communities and friendships, and that’s why it’s so important to be honest about who you are. Making yourself out to be someone you’re not doesn’t create a genuine friendship.
When I met MacKenzie in real life, she invited me into her home to see her life and her family exactly as it is. She didn’t try to put on a mask. She welcomed me into her imperfect, beautiful life and said, “This is who I am.”
Being genuine is so important in friendships. Don’t be what you think someone else wants you to be. Be YOU.
If you spend your time and effort trying to be what you think someone wants you to be, you’re going to be exhausted trying to do that. Also, you will always have to be that fake person instead of your true self when you’re around that friend. At some point, the facade will come crumbling down. It’s so important to be real from the get-go.
Look for people who will love you exactly for who you are, want you to be the best version of yourself that you can be, but who don’t try to make you someone that you’re not.

2. Commit to Be FOR Someone
When MacKenzie told me that she committed to me that she would never ask me for anything — no favors and no promotions — it spoke volumes to me. She said that our friendship meant more to her than anything I could ever do for her. She loved me for who I was as a person, not what she might be able to get from me.
We should be FOR each other, especially in friendships. When we were together, one thing we both committed to each other was that we would never say something behind each other’s backs that we wouldn’t say to each other’s face. I have learned that gossip and inauthenticity can be such destroyers of relationships.
If you have a concern about something, go directly to that person and figure out what’s going on. Be real, open, honest, and vulnerable.
In the realm of online community, it’s also important to cheer each other on in business endeavors and be excited for one another, rather than envious of success. We need to each accept our callings in life.
MacKenzie and I are in different seasons of life with different strengths and different goals. We don’t want what each other have, and we are excited to cheer each other on!
Look for relationships with people who don’t talk about other people behind their backs. If someone will talk about someone else behind their back to you, there’s a very good chance they’ll talk about you behind your back to someone else. Also, look for people who are genuinely FOR you — who will cheer you on and be excited for your successes instead of feeling threatened by your success.

3. Don’t Look for a “Perfect” Fit
Along that same line, I think it’s also very important to embrace the differences between you and other people in your life. So often, I think we try to find friends who are exactly like us and are the “perfect” people. I’ve discovered that you can learn SO much from friends who are in different seasons of life with different callings and convictions.
Obviously, you want a friend who has the same core values as you do, so that you have something meaningful to help form a connection. But I encourage you to not get too hung up on the differences that don’t really matter all that much. Instead, embrace those differences as something beautiful!
Start right where you are. Reach out to the people you see around you, invite people into your home, and love people well. Take that first step to be that friend. Instead of looking for that person to be that friend to you, go be that friend to someone else that you want to have yourself.
Yes, there will be times when you’ve reached out to someone over and over again with no response. Usually this is a good indication that it’s time to move on and try investing in someone else.
Also, don’t be discouraged if you try being friends with someone and it’s just not a a good fit as a friend. It doesn’t mean anything bad about you or the other person. It just means that you probably won’t reach that level of intimacy with that specific person. We can’t all click with everyone!
Honestly, it took me two years of reaching out, investing, and praying earnestly to finally find a group of safe friends who truly pour into me and are for me. Don’t give up! Keeping loving others well and being the friend to others that you wish you had yourself.
Look around for people who might be different from you but with whom you might be able to develop a close bond. Reach out to people outside of your normal circle. Befriend someone who is in a very different season of life than you. Ask good questions and seek to learn all you can from others.

4. Communicate and Forgive
The other day MacKenzie texted me about a situation she was concerned about. She was uneasy about something she had done and wanted to talk it through with me. We had a great talk on the phone and I was so glad that she had the courage to come to me and talk about it versus just letting something fester.
It is SO important to be open and honest with one another about concerns. Rather than stewing over things or worrying that we may have offended someone, go to them and talk about it.
We live in a disposable culture. When someone hurts us, we get offended and try to often move on from that friend because we are hurt and don’t want to fix it. It’s so important to fight for our friendships and relationships. When we love someone and it’s a good friendship, it’s worth fighting for — even through the struggle.
Walking away is the easiest thing, but in the long run, the friendships you’ve fought for and stuck with and walked through forgiveness with are the ones that are the solid, lasting relationships.
How have you developed true, meaningful friendships?
P.S. You can watch the full scope MacKenzie and I did on friendship here. You can also check out the scope we did together on her channel to see what goofballs we are! Consider yourself warned! 🙂

How starting with a clean kitchen changes my day (Go to Bed Challenge: Day 13)

One of the best ways I can start my day is to wake up to a clean kitchen. A few years ago, we started developing the habit of not going to bed until the dishwasher was loaded and the countertops were cleaned off.
It’s amazing how happy this makes me feel in the mornings — it’s like a fresh, clean slate to start the day!
Three things you should know:
1) Jesse and the kids help with this — if this was left entirely up to me, it just wouldn’t happen every day.
2) We make really simple meals most days and clean up after every meal, so our kitchen rarely gets to the “disastrous” stage — which makes this a lot easier to maintain.
3) We don’t stress about it being perfect. If you look closely, there are crumbs on the floor, the stove has some food crusted onto it, and one cupboard door has chocolate spilled down it. I’ll get to those things today (hopefully), but just having the dishwasher loaded and the countertops cleaned off makes it feel like it’s clean!

Yesterday, a friend came to me and shared with me that one of my kids had done something really wrong. What’s more, it was something I was sure they knew was very wrong.
I felt sick and upset that they would do it anyway. They didn’t have self-control. That I couldn’t trust them when I wasn’t with them.
Jesse and I had an opportunity in that moment: to be frustrated and lash out at this child. Or to love them through this, listen to their heart, and gently talk about the consequences to their actions.
With Jesse’s encouragement, we chose the latter… And ended up having a really beautiful and honest conversation that knit our hearts closer together.
Parenting is hard, hard work. There are many discouraging moments and days. There are many times when I feel so ill-equipped, when I wonder if my kids are going to have to go through years of counseling to undo the mistakes I’ve made (because, trust me, there are plenty of times when a situation like the above hasn’t ended with gentle words.)
But then I look into their eyes and I’m reminded that God has uniquely gifted and equipped us to parent these children. He’s given us these children. And even though we love them more than anyone else in the world, He loves them even more.

He wants me to look to Him in those overwhelming parenting moments. I don’t always have what it takes, but He is enough.
He is Wisdom. He is Truth. He is Love. And He will supply everything I need to be the mom He has called me to be.
Today, I’m going to rest in that and cling to that.

What are some little things that make you happy (Go to Bed Challenge: Day 11)
What are some little things that make you happy (Go to Bed Challenge: Day 11)

Good morning! What are some little things that you just love and that make you happy?
For me, among other things, it’s coffee mugs, nail polish, and socks:
-I’ve found that drinking coffee from a mug I love makes coffee even *that much better*.
-I’ve found when I have my nails painted, it makes me smile and feel more put together (plus, I don’t bite them! Yes, I’m a nail biter!)
-I’ve found that comfy, fun socks just make me happy — even if I’m the only one one who knows that I’m sporting them under my riding boots. ?
What about YOU? In what little ways do you surround yourself with little doses of happiness?
(It’s Day 11 of the Go to Bed Early Challenge and I was in bed by 10:10 pm last night but didn’t end up completely winding down and falling for another 30 minutes. But that’s still big progress for me over a few months ago!!)
Are you joining me for the Go to Bed Early Challenge? If so, leave a comment on this post to let me know how you did with your go-to-bed goal last night.
We’re in this together… And if you didn’t hit your goal, that’s okay! Give yourself grace, don’t beat yourself up, and know that you can try again tomorrow!

Real life, asthma, and why there are some things I don’t really talk about online
Real life, asthma, and why there are some things I don’t really talk about online

Not 15 minutes after I posted a very peaceful and serene-looking photo this morning, this picture is what my morning looked like.
Sometimes, I think it’s easy to look at someone’s photos online and concoct a completely false view of what their reality is. That they never have struggles, that life is all roses and rainbows for them, and that their house magically cleans itself.
This is a big part of what our family’s reality has been for the last 5 years — working hard to keep this little boy’s asthma at bay. I don’t talk about it much online because I tire quickly of the well-meaning suggestions for how we should treat or cure or what we need to change or do or not do… We’ve tried the diets and oils and natural remedies — all to no avail. And I already struggle with enough guilt that they haven’t worked.
So, much as it’s hard for my mama heart, we are grateful for modern medicine that keeps this boy able to live an active life, gain weight, and to mostly sleep at night.
I know many parents are dealing with much, much more difficult illnesses and diseases with their children. But it still hurts my mama heart to see this little boy often struggling for breath, waking up with coughing fits, and regularly needing medication and breathing treatments.
I share this little peek into real-life here as a reminder that what you see on social media or a blog is usually just a tiny glimpse into the window of someone’s reality.
Don’t compare yourself to little snippets you see online. Don’t feel frustrated by it. And don’t wish for it. Everyone has heavy burdens and hard struggles. No one is immune.
Cultivate the ground you are standing on instead of wishing you had someone else “greener pastures”.
