Good morning! It’s Day #17 of the Go to Bed Early Challenge.
I had trouble winding down last night. I did all the usual things — getting ready for bed early, reading to my kids, reading, taking a bath, lying in bed with my eyes closed, praying, listening to music, even taking a supplement that’s supposed to calm you down and help you sleep. But despite all that, I didn’t actually fall asleep until well after midnight.
I’m excited — and a little nervous — about all the filming we’ll be doing today and tomorrow at our house for our new Make Over Your Evenings course and that’s mostly why I was having trouble falling asleep. I finally did fall asleep around 1 am and then woke up with a start at 5:45 am.
We spent time in prayer and quiet this morning and I feel much calmer and ready for today! I’m going to choose joy, choose gratitude, and choose courage — even if I didn’t get enough sleep last night!)
How was YOUR night last night? What helps you to fall asleep when you’re struggling to wind down?
Are you joining me for the Go to Bed Early Challenge? If so, leave a comment on this post to let me know how you did with your go-to-bed goal last night.
We’re in this together… And if you didn’t hit your goal, that’s okay! Give yourself grace, don’t beat yourself up, and know that you can try again tomorrow!

Do you ever have those mornings where you just wake up and you don’t feel like doing life? Maybe you’re going through a really trying time in life, or maybe you’re just having a rough week.
If you’re feeling discouraged right now, here’s some encouragement on how to show up and give 100% even when you don’t feel like it…
I can’t stress this enough. Really think about what is going to matter in 10 years from now.
If you set yourself up for failure from the get-go by making a massively long to-do list or over-committing to too many things, you’ll be too overwhelmed to want to show up and give it your all.
Decide what your top priorities are, make sure those are on your list, and be okay with taking other things off your list that really aren’t going to matter.
If you want to have the energy to pour out to others, you have to be sure to take care of yourself first. You can’t give from an empty tank. Prioritize filling up your tank.
Think about what will nourish your soul, spirit, and body. When you live from a nourished place, you’ll have more energy to be able to show up and give your all.
This is the best way to give 100%. Strive to be completely present in whatever moment you’re in. It’s so easy to think about where you have to be next, what you have to do, or even what you’ll say next in a conversation. Listen fully, dwell in the present moment, and be with the people surrounding you.
For me, it helps to compartmentalize. I have a marriage to invest in, children to homeschool, friends to spend time with, a business to run and manage, social media accounts to keep up with, a blog to write, and so much more.
I could let it overwhelm me and can feel like I’m losing my mind if I try to multi-task. When I compartmentalize and focus fully on one thing at a time, I’m able to do all of these things and do them well.
What motivates you to show up and give 100% each day in life?
P.S. If you want some more encouragement, I highly recommend Hands-Free Mama and Hands-Free Life by Rachel Macy Stafford to challenge you in being fully present in your life every day.

Looking for ways to reduce college expenses? Don’t overlook the high expense of college textbooks. This year, my daughters have enrolled in classes that required books ranging from $4 to $300!
Considering that my two girls will purchase between 160-300 books before they complete college, this is an area we can are working hard to save in.
Here are a few ways we’ve found to save on textbooks:
When you enroll them in a college, immediately ask around for the best ways to buy textbooks. Ask the school administrators, ask other students, and ask other parents.
Often colleges, and even sub-disciplines within college, will have Facebook groups where the students swap/buy/sell/loan textbooks to one another.
Check all the sites I’ve listed below, as well as the campus bookstore. If you find a cheaper price online, but need the book quickly, ask the local bookstore to price match. Many will.
Don’t assume you need the latest edition. Ask professors (or check the syllabus) to see if the newest edition is the only one allowed. If not, investigate whether you need the newest or not, depending on the changes.
In one online class, my daughter was “required” to buy an English textbook that was basically a style manual. Most of that information can be found quickly using a google search. She asked the instructor if she had to buy the $200 book, and he said no!
Prices change on textbooks. Buying books on the week class starts is going to cost you the most and give you the least selection. As soon as you get your book list, start checking and ordering.
My daughter needed the newest edition for her Economics textbook — and it was over $300. Rather than buy it, we rented it from Amazon. Students on Amazon can get a FREE student PRIME account for six months (you’ll need to cancel at the end of 6 months, or you can get a discounted rate on a Prime account) — which means free two-day shipping.
Depending on the book, your student’s learning style, and the rules from the school regarding in-class technology use, a Kindle book may work just fine. This will be particularly helpful for reading books, but less so for textbooks.
The downside is you can’t re-sell a Kindle ebook. You CAN, however, loan or borrow Kindle books from other Kindle owners.
If you let them know you are using it for a class, the library may be willing to loan you books for longer than the usual borrowing period without requiring you to renew it. Also, if your library does not have the books you need, ask for inter-library loans.
If you know what classes your kids will be taking next semester or next year, ask the professor if they plans to keep the same edition. If so, start looking early. You can check websites, or ask people currently in those classes if you can buy or rent their textbooks for the following semester.
Want more textbooks savings?

It’s a big week this week! Part of my team/film crew are flying in today for us to film a new 14-day course — Make Over Your Evenings — on Tuesday and Wednesday. And then I’m gearing up for leaving for a 10-day trip to Italy and Israel at the end of next week!!
I’ve been chipping away at preparations and planning for the last few weeks, so I feel like things are in pretty good shape for both big projects, but I knew that it wouldn’t hurt to start my morning with some “natural Xanax”– a few drops of each of these essential oils rubbed on my feet. I’m following that up with prayer, reading God’s Word, and quietly sipping my coffee while the house is still asleep.
(Note: I don’t sell essential oils and I use and like multiple brands. )

(It’s Day #16 of the Go to Bed Early Challenge and I was in bed by 10:20 p.m. last night. More and more, that seems to be the ideal time for me. I’ll keep shooting for 10 p.m., but I’m also good with giving myself a little wiggle room because 10:20 p.m. is still a great bedtime, in my opinion, if I stick with it very consistently!)

During this Year of Rest, I’ve been working on being a lot more intentional about making space for winding down and quiet in my life. Multiple times before bed this past week, I got everything done before dinner, and then had an hour and a half to wind down, take a bath, and read a book before bed.
Even though last week was very full and we had multiple activities every day and friends over at our house every day, it was such a productive and calm week — and I know it was because I was intentional about building in these spaces for quiet.
I’ve also been intentional about making time for Sabbath in my week — taking a day to refresh my soul, recharge my batteries, and re-energize my body for another week. A day to shut out the noise and soak up the quiet. A day with few responsibilities and commitments. A day to just let my soul inhale and exhale.

I finished this book this week and it was one of my favorites this year, so far.
Finding Spiritual Whitespace wasn’t anything like I expected it to be, but it was everything that I need to read right now in this season of life.

We make homemade Bread Machine Cinnamon Rolls again this week. Only this time, Silas wanted to made the dough almost entirely by himself and then I taught him how to roll it out, roll it up, and cut it up!
He ended up doing almost all of the Cinnamon Rolls by himself… and I think with a few more practice tries, he’ll be able to make them without any help from me at all!
Folks, this is how I work myself out of a job! 🙂
{Note: Notice his hair cut? This is why.}

I’ve said no to almost every opportunity this year as part of my Year of Rest, but one of the few opportunities I said yes to was speaking at the Business Boutique events — a new event for women who are in business or who want to start a business from the Dave Ramsey team.
The events will be held in Dallas and Phoenix in May and Early Bird tickets are almost sold out! The speaker lineup is incredible and the price for the two-day event is really fantastic!
If you want to hear more about the event and about what I’m speaking about, watch this scope I did while I was meeting with the folks from Dave Ramsey’s team this week.
{If you are interested in attending, go to BusinessBoutique.com for more details on the dates and price. Psst! You can use coupon code BBPAINE to get $10 off the price of any one ticket! That makes the Early Bird Tickets just $149!!}

It was a rough day yesterday. Kaitlynn competed in her first away competition (in Cincy) and got 4th place — which devastated her.
She had been dead set on getting first place (unbeknownst to us!) and was very disappointed in herself that nerves had gotten to her and she hadn’t performed like she knew she was able.
It literally took an hour of talking and hugging and working through it for her even be somewhat consolable. Seeing her older sister and younger brother love and encourage her when she was so upset was a beautiful thing. And it warmed my heart in the middle of a hard parenting moment.
As parents, while we’re so proud of our kids and are their biggest cheerleaders, we are grateful for times when they get to learn life lessons… Even though it breaks our hearts to see them struggle through loss and failure. Ultimately, though, it’s opportunities like this that will shape and mold their futures.
{And I’m so happy that Kaitlynn is now ready to press forward and is talking about what she’s going to do differently at the next competition!}

You’re tired.
If you’re like many moms, you wish you had less stress, a shorter to-do list, and ninja time management skills.
We dream of getting so much accomplished in a day, but we struggle with feeling overwhelmed or anxious. Or maybe we know someone close to us who is struggling with depression, and it weighs on us. Maybe you’re in a season where simply taking a daily shower is an accomplishment.
Moms everywhere feel pressured to be Supermom, red cape and all. We want to be everything to everyone.
But we need to rest.
I know, you want to rest, but you don’t feel like you can take the time. There’s just so much to do. I understand.
Many of us think that resting is something we get to do after our work is done. The problem is, my to-do list is never-ending. The laundry is piling up. Phone calls need to be returned. Dinner needs to be made.
God created everything in six days and rested for one. He gifted us the perfect example of rest so our soul may thrive in relationship with Him. Our weary, earthly bodies need rest! We need dedicated time set aside to recharge and reflect. Without it, our soul, mind, and body will suffer.
If we assume that we can only rest after our work is complete, then we will rarely ever rest. There’s always more to do, another project to get to, another email to send. We live in a society that glorifies busyness, and we’re running on empty. Our days are consumed with worry and anxiety rather than peace and purpose.
Structuring time for rest is challenging when there are young children at home. There are seasons of life when it seems impossible to devote a day to rest. Think outside the box; can you find two half-days in the week for scheduled rest? It may not always happen perfectly, and that’s okay. Make the most of it, based on the season you are in.
Find ways to fit rest into the margins. Teach the principle of rest to your children. Carve out pockets of time to recharge together: have meaningful conversations, watch a family movie, build a lego creation, or go for a nature walk.
Here are five intentional ways to welcome more rest into your schedule:
Don’t get me wrong; I think social media is a wonderful tool. I use it myself.
It can also be the biggest time-waster in your day. When I intend to spend five minutes scrolling through my news feed, I look at the clock and realize thirty minutes has flown by.
Could you gain extra time in your week by fasting from social media?
Focus on simple, cleansing meals for a season, such as salads, smoothies, and fresh vegetable juices, etc. No elaborate, heavy meals that are time-consuming and labor intensive to prepare.
Think of green, nutrient-rich foods in their most basic form.
Crystal’s Make Over Your Mornings course is a great place to begin. Have your day properly planned and off to the right start; this will help you stay productive and find margins of time that can snowball into a defined time for rest.
Then set a consistent bedtime and make a good night’s sleep a priority.
Get rid of the extra stuff in your life. Don’t just organize, but clear out the clutter.
I’ve found the fewer possessions I have to care for, the more time I have. More stuff = less time for what matters. Collect experiences instead of things.
Recent research has suggested planning for a trip or experience is more fulfilling than buying a material item. The anticipation of an upcoming trip, even a short weekend getaway, helps you feel more rested and happier overall.
Set a date to spend the weekend at a state park, visiting family in a neighboring state, or at a hotel with a small waterpark.
We were created to crave rest. We’re able to give our very best to our families when we’ve had time to recharge and refresh.
Strive for one day each week, or at the very least, search for ways to welcome it into the margins of your schedule. You’ll get better with it as you make it a priority!
Are you being intentional about making space for it in your schedule? Are you modeling it for your children? What can you do differently?

One of my secrets to finding time to read every day is that I often have at least one ebook that I’m currently reading that I take with me on-the-go.
You never know when you’ll find yourself in a situation with 3-5 minutes of extra minutes of spare time. I love being able to pull up my current ebook and get some quick reading time in during those short windows of time that might open up while I’m stuck waiting at the doctor’s office or waiting in line. And it’s surprising how quickly you can get through a book by doing this!
As you probably know if you read here regularly, there are hundreds of free ebooks offered daily on Amazon. Almost every week day, we post a round-up of some of the best free ebooks we find each day.
I’ve had many people tell me they skip over the free ebook posts because they don’t have a Kindle or other e-reader to read the ebooks on. Well, guess what? I don’t have one either!
A lot of people don’t know that you don’t need a Kindle or other e-reader to be able to download the free ebooks offered on Amazon. All you need is to simply download the free Kindle Reading App to any mobile device (phone, iPad, etc.) or even your laptop or desktop computer!
1. Decide which device you’d like to read your free ebooks on (computer, phone, etc.)
2. From that device, click on this link to download the free Kindle Reading app. (You can do this for multiple devices. For example, I have the app on my laptop computer and my phone.)
3. Login to your Amazon account.
4. If you are on a computer: you will receive a pop-up that asks you to enable offline reading. Click on the “enable offline” button to download the app to your computer.
5. If you are on a phone or mobile device: you will automatically be taken to the app store to download the Kindle reading app to your device.
6. Next time you want to take advantage of a free ebook or buy an ebook, you’ll see a little box on the right side of the Amazon page that gives you an option to “deliver to” with a drop-down menu of all the devices you have the Kindle Reading App installed on.
7. Select which device you’d like to have the ebook delivered to, and then click on the “Buy now with 1-click” button.
8. All of your ebooks will show up in your Kindle Reading App on your chosen device.
9. You can choose to have them stored in the Cloud or on your device. I recommend storing them in the Cloud so that you don’t use up all of the storage memory on your device. I keep all of my ebooks in my Cloud, and then I download them one at a time to my device when I’m ready to read them. This allows me to access the current book I’m reading at all times — even when I don’t have access to Wi-fi.
See how easy that is?

Guest post from Lanise of Earth Angel Writings
When I decided to start couponing (about three years ago) I would see all the savings many women were posting online and all the stockpile they had… and I wanted in!
Yet, when I did the math, being an extreme couponer wasn’t worth the time and effort for my small family. Newspapers cost $1.50 each, and I knew that I definitely needed more than one! My budget was just too tight for me to justify spending money on a newspaper subscription or buying tons of newspapers at the store.
I still wanted to save money on my weekly groceries and other household products, but I didn’t want to spend a lot of valuable time clipping and sorting tons of coupons. In my quest for savings, I discovered some simple places to find and use grocery coupons (and more). These savings tips are perfect for the beginning couponer (or the “I don’t have time for that” shopper).
Instead of tossing mailers in my recycle bin (as usual), I started to see what coupons I could find. I discovered coupons for local businesses, stores, and restaurants in my community.
Does your community distribute a free weekend edition of your local newspaper? For years, mine was just thrown in my driveway every Saturday morning. I would leave it outside on my lawn until one of my neighbors snagged an extra copy.
One day I picked it up. Yep, coupons! The same manufacture’s coupons found in that week’s Sunday newspaper.
Are you taking advantage of your grocery store’s digital coupons and savings programs? Most of your local grocery stores and pharmacy stores have their own mobile apps and text subscriptions that allow you to download digital coupons right to your store’s savings card or account.
I buy a lot organic/natural foods, and coupons are not readily available in the Sunday’s newspaper. I started to check company websites of my favorite products. Many coupons were located right on the company’s site ready to print. I signed-up for their email mailing, too, and found they sent more coupons right to my inbox!
I have even solicited companies via email requesting coupons. In doing this, I have received coupons for free products and free samples in the mail. This only takes a quick minute using the company’s contact form!
My local library has a coupon center where patrons can take desired (clipped & unclipped) manufactured coupons. You can leave unwanted coupons for other patrons as well. I find a lot of hot brand coupons here; especially when I want extra coupons for that week’s hot sales item.
This is a “no-brainer”; yet, you really need a keen eye. On your next grocery shopping trip, keep an eye out for extra coupons. Check store displays, look in the grocery aisles, and right on the product. And don’t forget to grab those Catalina coupons that print out at the register.
This is my new favorite thing to do. I love checking my daily saving/deal blogs for the best coupons, free samples, and online deals. These blogs post featured deals on groceries, clothing, and other household products. Plus…they have a searchable printable coupon database (I only print the coupons I will use).
I find that by checking these places to find coupons, I have a more manageable amount of coupons to save on my weekly food budget and I’m able to keep a nice stock-up of the products and brands that my family likes.
Couponing has become a fun “no-stress” routine! And I rarely have to purchase a newspaper!
Where do you find the best coupons?

People often ask me how I find time to read. It changes in every season, but right now, one way that I’m getting consistent reading in almost every single day is by starting my day with time in God’s Word and a little time in a good book.
I usually get up at least 30 minutes to an hour before the rest of the family and this early morning time is a sacred, soul-filling oasis for me.
I light a candle, make a cup of coffee, write in my Gratitude Journal, spend time reading and journaling as part of the She Reads Truth study, pray over my day/for people & situations in my life, and read at least 5-10 pages of an encouraging book.
All of this usually only takes me 25-35 minutes, but it starts my day in such a calming, quieting, refreshing way. It also guarantees that — even if I have a very full rest of the day — I’ve gotten in a little reading. And those 5-10 pages of reading every day add up to at least one finished book every month!
I just finished Finding Spiritual Whitespace yesterday (it was SO, SO good — just what I needed for this season) and am excited to start Roots & Sky today!
(It’s Day #15 of the Go to Bed Early Challenge and I’m happy to report that I was in bed by 10 pm last night and got the best night’s sleep I’ve gotten all week long — yay!!)
How do YOU fit in reading? What are YOU reading right now?
