Clutter-Busting Challenge Day #12: 9 more things to add to our donation pile!
Clutter-Busting Challenge Day #12: 9 more things to add to our donation pile!
Every week day in May, I’m challenging my readers to try to find at least 7 things to get rid of. These can be big or small things, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you actually throw them out, sell them, donate them, recycle them, or find someone else who can use them. Think you’re up for the challenge?
Today’s things I got rid of:
- 2 shirts
- 1 pair of shoes
- 3 necklaces
- 1 lone earring
- 1 pair of earrings
- 1 book

Choose Joy, Even When Life is Crumbling in Around You
After one of my sessions at the CHAP conference last week, a 10-year-old boy came pushing his mom up to meet me. His mom, Beth, was in a wheelchair and I could instantly tell by that and the hat she wore that hers was a story of great pain and suffering.
She told me that she’d been diagnosed with leukemia a year ago and had gone through extensive treatments. I asked her more questions and discovered a little of just how intensive and intrusive those treatments had been. She’d been unable to do much to care for her family (she has seven children!) and she’d experienced unimaginable pain and suffering.
As she shared her story, though, the joy in her heart — even in this very difficult circumstances — was so evident. In fact, she wanted to come meet me to tell me thank you for my blog as it had been a lifeline for her in the midst of all she was going through.
My heart broke for Beth’s pain. At the same time, though, I was deeply touched that she could still be smiling and joyful.
Even when everything was so hard, even when they are really struggling financially (they’ve hired a full-time nanny–something that has been a blessing, but it’s also drained their budget), even when she doesn’t even know if she’s going to survive… in spite of all this, she was still smiling.
Truly, you can’t always change your circumstance, but you can always choose your attitude.
May I encourage you today in whatever you are facing to choose joy? Choose to smile. Choose gratitude.
It might not change or fix a difficult situation, but I promise that it will make it more bearable.

How to Decorate a Small Bedroom on a Budget
Guest post from Kathy of The Budget Decorator
Decorating a small bedroom can be a challenge, especially when your budget is tight. Follow these five great ideas for visually expanding your bedroom space, without shrinking your pocketbook!
Matchy-Matchy
No one does matchy-match anymore. However, there is one place in a small bedroom where you might want to consider it.
Match the color and tone of the bedding to the wall to make your bedroom space seem larger. The bed and the wall are the largest areas of real estate in the room… match them in color and the eye will glide over them.
The fewer times the eye has to stop, the larger a room seems. Use a light and cool color selection, get even more space stretching bonus!
Roll Away
No, not a roll away bed. But adding rolling drawers for under bed storage allows you to have handy access to things you use on a regular basis, but keeps it all put away. Keeping things out of site and the clutter level down in your bedroom will make the whole room seem larger, not to mention neater!
Easy ways to create rolling storage on a dime? If your floor is carpeted, attach caster wheels from your hardware store to old dresser drawers, plastic bins, or even sturdy cardboard boxes. Be sure to measure the height of your container with the attached wheels so that it will fit underneath the bed.
Hardwood under your bed? Instead of risk scratching your floor with caster wheels, how about adding self stick felt to the bottom of your storage container? It will allow it to slide easily out from under the bed, and be gentle on the floor as well. Craft stores sell adhesive backed felt for a few cents.
Lighten Up
Is the furniture in your bedroom dark or in need of an update? Paint your dresser, nightstand and headboard a light, neutral color, and see the whole room open up!
Let the Sun Shine In
Make sure your windows allow the most possible light enter the room. A bright room seems airy and light, and is a must for a small bedroom. Hang curtains and blinds so that when open, they clear the window and don’t block any natural light.
Less is More
Make sure when decorating a small bedroom, you always remember “less is more”. Remove anything in the room that isn’t necessary. This might even include sliding the dresser into the closet, using floating shelves in place of nightstands, or making sure every shoe, every piece of clothing, every earring has its place!
Decorating a small bedroom on a budget doesn’t have to be an exercise in magical powers. You can’t make more square footage appear, but you can make the most of what you’ve got!

Freezer Cooking in an Hour: One flop, one success, and two other favorite recipes
Freezer Cooking in an Hour: One flop, one success, and two other favorite recipes
I changed up my freezer cooking plan for this week a little because I wanted to get some Gluten-Free Waffles in the freezer and I also was really curious to try these Banana Peanut Butter Pancakes.

Unfortunately, the Banana Peanut Butter Pancakes weren’t the success I was hoping for. They cooked really, really fast and I found it was basically impossible to not burn them. Of course, it didn’t help that I was multi-tasking in the kitchen. 🙂 I also just didn’t really care for the egg-y banana taste. But it might just be me!

I also made a big batch of Chicken Broccoli Rice Casserole. None of it made it to the freezer though, sadly. We had one batch for dinner and then ended up serving the rest of it for dinner the following night. Yes, it’s a hit recipe around here!

I love these Gluten-Free Waffles. They are so, so good warmed and dolloped with a little butter and honey!

And I already told you about the Grain-Free Muffins. Because I couldn’t wait. I finished off the last muffin tonight, so I think I’m probably going to be making the recipe again soon… but I want to try a few different variations this time. Because you know how hard it is for me to stick with the recipe as it is! 🙂

Does Your Stuff Stress or Bless?
Guest post by Carrie
This month on MoneySavingMom.com, we are encouraged to eliminate seven items daily. There were a large number of comments from readers who posted that “they are in.” It seems as though there is a completely different mindset lately… simplify and declutter.
I like to think of it as stress or bless.
While it doesn’t seem like much, seven items a day is a great way to get started. I read before that to quit or start a habit, it takes about three weeks. By the end of the month, we should have the habit of getting rid of things that we don’t need and can carry this forward throughout the year.
Here are a few ways I’m simplifying and moving things out of my house.
Magazine Subscriptions:
I’ve not renewed any of my magazines, and I had at least 10 subscriptions every month. Most were completely free due to MyCokeRewards or through free offers on blogs. I would always pass them along when I was finished or recycle, but it seemed like it was getting to be too much of a hassle. This was causing more stress than blessing me, so I have eliminated it.
Kid’s Clothing:
I also have an area in my closet for clothing that can be donated as soon as my youngest outgrows it. This eliminates the need to have piles every where and reminds me to keep the clothing under control. In fact, I’ve gone through my boys’ closets several times and weeded out clothes. How many pairs of pajamas do kids really need?
My Clothing:
I remember during my own pregnancies that I had a limited wardrobe. It didn’t require too much thinking to get dressed in the morning… black pants, khakis, skirts, or jeans. Less than a dozen tops and I was good to go.
I’ve been doing the same with my regular clothes. It is so nice to open the closet and see empty space. Can you bless yourself by simplifying your wardrobe, or by choosing items that can mix and match so you can eliminate clothing?
Miscellaneous:
I have purchased a large plastic hamper to keep under my kitchen island. It holds all the recycling and encourages us to get rid of papers, plastic, cans, etc.
I also am planning on taking items into work and putting out a free sign. I’ve done this before and my things always get picked up by somebody else. I like to bless people with the free things. Whether it is books, toys, jewelry or even extra garden produce, it is a great way to pass items along.
As I’m going through room by room, I continually ask myself… does this stress or bless me? This is a very simple way to declutter and I have no problem finding seven things to remove. I love having clean spaces and empty drawers.
I remember somebody mentioning that it could be difficult to have room in our heart for God, our family, and our other interests if we are not relaxed in our homes.
I hope readers have a great experience with the challenge this month.

Delicious Grain-Free Honey-Sweetened Muffins

I’m doing the happy dance over here because I discovered a new grain-free muffin recipe that is actually really delicious.
{Those of you who have been grain-free for awhile probably think it’s funny that I’m so stoked that these are delicious, but I’m new to this whole grain-free thing, so it’s been a little hard for me to imagine a grain-free muffin could qualify as being delicious! :)}

The ingredients are a little unique, but trust me on this, these are good. No, they might not taste quite like a regular muffin made with flour, but they are still scrumptious — and easy to make, too.

I especially love how versatile they are! I swirled in some extra honey and sprinkled the tops with dates (my chocolate chip replacement).
So, so good — I even packed some to bring with me on my trip to Pennsylvania this weekend!
Find the recipe here.

I’m flying to Pennsylvania today to speak in Harrisburg, so I worked ahead on the challenge. 🙂

Today’s things I got rid of:
- 4 books
- 2 plates
- 1 loan little candle — I have no idea where this came from!
- 1 placemat
- 1 tub of half-used cappuccino mix purchased for an event we hosted. I was shocked to discover this expired in 2011 — yikes! I can’t believe it was sitting on my pantry shelf for that long!

Help! How do we cut our budget when there’s nothing left to cut?
Help! How do we cut our budget when there’s nothing left to cut?

My husband and I have been trying to live as cheaply as possible, and almost every article I read on the subject recommends cutting back. What can I cut back on when I don’t feel like I have anything to spend?
We don’t watch tv, don’t pay for internet, and don’t rent movies. We can’t afford to eat out, and the only dates we go on are funded by a change jar. The debt we have is his college loans, which are over $31k. The interest rate is 6.8%, which means we aren’t seeming to get anywhere on it.
We don’t buy new clothes, or get our hair done. His mom feeds us as often as she can, and we don’t need to buy much milk, meat or eggs. What more is there to cut back on? -Ambrosia
When I read your note, my heart hurt for you. I well remember the law school days when money was tighter than tight and it felt like we were never going to make any financial traction.
It’s hard when you feel like there aren’t any other corners you can cut and yet you are still stuck. Here’s my advice:
1. Focus on the Progress You Are Making
There is always something you can do — even if it’s as simple as learning a new way to stretch beans and rice, playing the drugstore game, or taking surveys online to earn money. Often, you can’t do a lot to change your financial situation overnight, but focus on what you can do and it will help you stay empowered and inspired.
Giving into hopelessness and despair will never get you anywhere, but it will make you feel powerless and stuck. And when you decide to give up, your chances of actually getting back up on your feet again are pretty slim.
Also, be encouraged! Your sacrifices and careful money management are actually doing quite a lot for you as they are keeping you from getting mired in a much deeper financial mess. While $31,000 in debt feels massive to you, many people would love to be in your shoes instead of dealing with the hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt they’ve accumulated.
2. Keep Cultivating Contentment
Now, more than ever, you have the opportunity to choose to bloom where you are planted. Challenge yourself to keep a gratitude journal and write down at least three blessings every day. This will help you to weather the difficult days and weeks — and will remind you that even though life may be hard, there is much to be thankful for.
Looking for more encouragement and inspiration? Check out my article on 16 Ways to Become More Content.
3. Find Ways to Increase Your Income
The easiest way to dig out of this hole you find yourself in is to give yourself a bigger income to help shovel yourself out more quickly. This will benefit you not only in the short-term, but also in the long-term as it may allow you to completely change your financial situation within the next five years.
This is exactly what happened with us. When Jesse was in law school, we were determined to stay out of debt and I really wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. So when we found out we were expecting our first baby, I kicked into overdrive and started researching and trying everything possible to make my dream of staying home a reality.
It wasn’t easy — in fact, there were many months when I worked too many hours and made very, very little for all my time and effort. But it eventually paid off in great measure as I landed upon this thing called blogging, started MoneySavingMom.com and eventually turned it into a business that earned enough for me to make more than a full-time income and to pay for a wonderful team to work for me, too.
Read the whole series of my journey to becoming a work-at-home mom here.
There are a thousand and one ways to bring in extra income. Start researching, experimenting, learning, and putting forth a lot of time and effort and you’ll likely land upon something that works well for you. It won’t be an overnight success, but if you persevere, I’m certain you’ll find some things that will bring in extra income.
What advice do the rest of you have for Ambrosia and others in her shoes?
