Fill your home with the delicious scent of freshly made artisan bread with just a few minutes of hands-on time and some pantry staples! Everyone will rave about this incredibly easy artisan bread recipe! (Check out all of our other homemade bread recipes, too!)
This bread is literally so easy that you’ll feel like you’re cheating. But it is SO good and it looks so impressive that people will never believe it only has 4 ingredients (one of them is water!!) and took you a cumulative effort of about five minutes to put together!
I got the idea to make this from my sister-in-law. She had us over a few years ago and served a similar bread and I loved it so much and she told me it was Easy Overnight Artisan Bread.
I was instantly sure that I would probably ruin it. You see, I’ve tried multiple recipes that have “Artisan” in them and they’ve never turned out great.
I had convinced myself that me and Artisan just don’t cooperate! But, inspired by my sourdough bread success, I decided to get brave and try again!
Why You’ll Love This 4 Ingredient Artisan Bread
I was in Kansas staying at my family’s house and was itching to bake bread but didn’t have my sourdough starter. I remembered the yummy Overnight Artisan Bread my sister-in-law had served us and decided to just try googling to see if I could find a similar recipe.
I landed on this one and promptly made it. It was so good and my extended family — who ate it for Sunday lunch — loved it, too. In fact, the whole loaf didn’t even make it through lunch!
After I got back home to Tennessee, I tried to make it again. Sadly, it didn’t turn out as well. I ended up making it multiple times to figure out what worked and what didn’t. After multiple attempts and different versions, I think the recipe below is truly fail-proof.
I hope you love it and that it becomes a favorite at your house, too!
Ingredients for Dutch Oven Bread Recipe
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 heaping teaspoon active dry yeast
1 1/4 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110 degrees — not hot, just warm)
How to Make Overnight Artisan Bread
1. In a large bowl, combine flour, yeast, and salt.
2. Add warm water and stir until blended (with your hands, wooden spoon, or Danish dough whisk). The dough should be sticky and loose, and you want it to be mixed together fully.
3. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough rest at room temperature for around 12 hours.
4. After 12 hours, preheat your oven to 450ºF and put an empty 6-to-8-quart Dutch oven or heavy pot in the oven while it preheats.
5. Lightly flour a work surface and gently fold the dough over a few times (using flour sparingly and only if it’s too sticky to handle).
6. Shape into a round ball and place on a piece of parchment paper. Cover and let rest for another 30 minutes.
7. After the dough has rested for 30 minutes, use a sharp knife to cut an X on the top of the loaf.
8. Pull the pot out of the oven and place the dough ball (still on the parchment paper) straight into the pot and place the lid on top.
9. Bake (covered) at 450º for 35 minutes.
10. Remove the lid and bake another 10-15 minutes until the loaf is golden brown.
11. Remove the parchment paper (with bread) from the pot and place it on a cooling rack.
12. Serve with a generous amount of butter and honey
Tips for Making Bread in Dutch Oven
There are so many variables when making bread — sometimes you just need to try, try, and try again before you get it “just right”.
However, here are a few tips to steer you in the right direction:
Make sure your yeast is still active (you can proof it with warm water to make sure it bubbles)
Use high-quality, high-protein flour.
Let the dough rise long enough — don’t rush it.
Make sure your oven and Dutch oven are both VERY hot (and that your oven is at the correct temperature).
Let the bread rest for a bit before cutting into it (this is the hardest part!)
How to Store Four Ingredient Artisan Bread
Always store homemade bread at room temperature or in the freezer (never in the fridge as it will dry it out).
Also, make sure your bread is completely cooled before storing in a tightly sealed food storage container — otherwise the moisture could cause the bread crust to get soggy.
Store it at room temperature for up to 3 days. If you want to store it longer than that, freezing is the best way to retain freshness.
If you plan to freeze your bread, it’s a good idea to slice it first so you can pull out however many slices you’d like to reheat.
Dutch Oven Bread Recipe FAQs
Is it better to bake bread in a Dutch oven?
Many believe it is better to bake bread in a Dutch oven as the high heat inside and the lid on top trap steam inside and help the bread to stay moist and flexible so it can rise easily.
Do I need to oil my Dutch oven for bread?
No, you do not need to oil your Dutch oven… instead, just put the bread dough on a piece of parchment paper to prevent sticking and easily transfer the dough in and out of the pan.
Why is my Dutch oven bread dense?
This could be caused by many variables — too much flour, using gluten-free or whole grain flour, not kneading the dough for long enough, not letting it rise long enough (or letting it rise too long), and an unstable oven temperature… to name a few. Keep at it and you’ll eventually get the feel for the dough — your bread will get lighter and fluffier with each attempt!

Welcome to my weekly recap post where I share a little peek into our week, share some links to thingsI don’t want you to miss, and highlight some things you may not have seen on the blog this week.
We had a quieter week at our house as we geared up for Kaitlynn to leave on a school trip to Southeast Asia on Thursday and Silas and Jesse to leave for school trip to DC bright and early tomorrow morning. Kathrynne has her Spring Break this coming week, so she’s going to stay with me and help with Kierstyn, Micah, and David + we’re looking forward to getting to hang out and maybe watch a show together (she’s picking some tonight for me to choose from!)
I’ll be sure to share more about the school trips in the coming weeks! I’m hoping to get to interview Jesse, Silas, and Kaitlynn about their experiences! And we’ll share a little more on Tuesday on the podcast episode! Let’s just say that Kaitlynn’s trip has been quite eventful so far!!
In this episode, Sara and I take a dive into her inspiring journey of facing limitations, from a challenging road to motherhood, 13 years of infertility, adopting four children, birthing 3 unexpected biological children, navigating a wide age range and seven kids, and dealing with chronic illness. Sara shares her wonderful wisdom on how to embrace and find beauty in the roadblocks, unexpected, and limitations of life.
We tackle tough questions and discuss the incredibly transformative power of acknowledging and grieving our limitations. Sara’s insights into incorporating pauses into our daily lives and allowing God to work through our limitations rather than against them spoke deeply to my soul and it’s something I’ve thought of multiple times since this interview. We also chat about the practical steps you can take to navigate the tension of feeling like there’s not enough of you to go around and the importance of trusting God in those moments.
I hope this conversation helps to shift your perspective on limitations and reveal the unexpected gifts that they can bring. There can actually be blessing in boundaries!

Also, if your babies go to daycare, a few parents mentioned using cloth diapers only on weekends. It saves over time and works with your daycare!
2. Potty train as early as possible.
Another very practical way to save on diapers is to potty train your children early. Several readers mentioned potty training their children before age 1 via elimination communication.
3. Stock up using Target gift card deals.
Target often has diaper deals where you can get a free $20 gift card when you purchase $100 of diapers. You can then use the $20 gift card to purchase more diapers (essentially for free!).
4. Buy in bulk.
Costco and Sam’s Club offer very competitive prices on bulk quantities of diapers — especially if you purchase the store brand.
5. Use generic/store brands.
Most readers acknowledged that generic brand diapers are typically just as absorbent as the popular brand name diapers. If you haven’t tried your local store brand, it could be a significant savings!
6. Shop at Aldi.
Along with cheaper prices on most grocery items, Aldi has great pricing on diapers — with the cost typically being less than $15 for a 100-pack. Also, Aldi diapers are apparently die, perfume, and paraben free!
7. Redeem points for brand name diapers.
Pampers and Huggies both have point rewards systems you can sign up for and use your points to cash in for free diapers. You can also try contacting these companies to ask for coupons!
8. Cash in on Ibotta rebates and Fetch rewards.
Submit diaper receipts to Ibotta and Fetch Rewards apps to earn cash back throughout the year! Sometimes they run bonuses on specific brands, including diapers!
Pro Tip: Don’t forget about Swagbucks! You can earn store gift cards (Amazon, Target, CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, etc.) to use towards diaper purchases. Check out these reader reviews on how Swagbucks helped people save on cloth diapers and disposable diapers.
9. Use Meijer Mperks.
If you live in the midwest, you can capitalize on special diaper discounts throughout the year at most Meijer stores. Along with almost constant digital diaper coupons via the Meijer Mperks App, they also have regular sales, offering cash back (or off your next purchase) for every $50 or $100 worth of diapers you purchase on one receipt.
10. Capitalize on Walgreens BOGO deals.
Walgreens regularly has BOGO diapers — making it a great time to stock up!

This was my fourth and fifth week of using the Kroger Boost program (it was $39 for the entire year with the deal they ran in January + I’ll get double fuel points all year — which will totally pay for itself and then some!)
I didn’t get a chance to share our groceries two weeks ago, so here are the last two grocery deliveries:
This week’s grocery delivery
They ended up over-charging me for the strawberries and they didn’t look good, so I requested a refund for those as I wouldn’t have bought them if I had known they would end up looking like they did. It’s super easy to request a refund on the app and they issued it almost immediately!
So my total with tax after the refund was around $99 for all the groceries shown above!
I’ve been working on perfecting a non-sourdough Overnight No Knead Artisan Bread. Look for the recipe soon! It’s SO good!
I also made homemade tortillas this past week. They were AMAZING! I now understand why so many of you choose to make our tortillas homemade!
And I did a second ferment on my Kombucha and made four different flavors. I was so happy with how it turned out, but my family likes the water kefir much better and it’s so easy that I will probably just stick with that.
Last week’s grocery delivery
My total for all these groceries was $167 with tax. So I’m under budget this month. I’ll likely put in a small grocery order on Thursday to use up the remaining amount to carry us over until next week because Jesse, Silas, and Kaitlynn will all be out of town on school trips, so we will be consuming a lot less food here while they are gone! 🙂
