Why I Skipped Doing the Homemaking Challenge Today

{I saw the above quote online today and it cracked me up! I’m all about striving for greatness! ;)}
So, y’all, I flaked out on the Homemaking Challenge today. And I’m not going to apologize for it.
I woke up feeling wiped out today. I think that getting out yesterday was just too much for me. So after my Morning Motivation Periscope show, I went back to bed. And I mostly stayed in bed the rest of the day.
I’m usually someone who pushes hard, sometimes too hard. But the past two weeks have really challenged me to do a better job of giving myself grace and listening to my body.
Today, my body was begging for rest and quiet and multiple naps. So that’s what I gave it.
I hope to be feeling energetic enough to tackle my clothes tomorrow. But for now, I’d headed to bed for more sleep. Because I think that’s one of the best things I can do for myself right now.
Thanks for your patience with me — and for so many of you who are gently encouraging me to continue taking it easy and giving myself grace. I am listening to you! 🙂
P.S. If you need a laugh tonight, be sure to read this post over on Instagram.
The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up Review (Part 3)
So, I knew it was coming… the part of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up when it would get weird. And well, today it happened.
Marie Kondo suggests that folding clothes transfers energy. And I responded, “Weird.”
She suggested thanking your clothes. And again, I say, “Weird.”
Finally, she makes a case for why you should treat your socks with respect. And I say a resounding, “Weird.”
But contrary to what you might expect, I didn’t close the book and walk away from it. I plowed through and kept reading… and I’m glad that I did.
I’d heard/seen things about people folding their clothes a different way as a result of reading this book. So I was curious as to what that was all about.
She says, “The key is to store things standing up rather than laid flat.” Why? So that when you open your drawer, you can see everything at once.
I’m torn on this. On the one hand, it seems like a lot of work. She suggests: “Fold each piece of clothing into a simple, smooth rectangle.” {My kids do most of the laundry nowadays and I’m trying to decide if I want to put in the work to teach them to fold and put away this way or not.}
On the other hand, it does make sense to have everything in your dressers in a way that you can see everything and don’t have to dig to try to find what you’re looking for.
Do any of you fold and put away your clothes this way? I’d love to hear your thoughts on it as I am toying with trying it.
“Keep things because you love them, not just because.”
This quote is one I want to remember and follow. I’ve been noticing how much stuff I hang out because I think I should.
I should read that book. We should review that manners chart. I should teach my kids that. I should make that craft kit. And on and on it goes.
But none of these shoulds are bringing me joy. Instead, they are making me feel like I’m not doing enough.
I love what she said about books: “You are going to read very few of your books again. Keep only those books that will make you happy just to see them on your shelves.”
And then she said this powerful statement: “Having fewer books actually increases the impact of the information I read.”
Whoa. That’s thought-provoking. And it made me immediately want to pare down my massive stack of I-want-to-read-right-now books next to my bed that has been taunting me for too long.
Two more quotes that really challenged me:
- “No matter how wonderful things used to be, we cannot live in the past. The joy and excitement we feel here and now are more important.”
- “By handling each sentimental item and deciding what to discard, you process your past.”
Did you read along with section 3 today? If so, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it or on what I shared above.

Who needs some motivation and inspiration to clear out some clutter?? ME!
So guess what that means? I’m bringing you all along with me. 🙂 I’m going to be clearing out clutter and re-organizing things at our house this week and I’d love for you to join me.
Every morning this week around 8 a.m. CT, I’ll post the assignment for that day. Then, at 8 p.m. CT, I’ll post my accomplishments for the day! You can either link up your blog posts (if you’re blogging about the challenge) or just tell us in the comments what you accomplished that day.
Today’s Assignment:
1. Get dressed in something that makes you feel great.
2. Make a short to-do list for the day.
3. Tidy up your kitchen — do the dishes and wipe the counter tops off.
4. Make your bed.
5. Go through your clothes — take everything out of your closets and drawers and go through each item and decide whether you love it and it fits. If not, get rid of it. Put the things you keep back in an organized manner.
I’m also going to be reading through The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up (can you believe I haven’t read it?) and blogging my thoughts as I read the book this week, too. Today, I’ll be reading pages 64-127. I’ll have a post up with my thoughts later today.

Today’s Homemaking Challenge Assignment Results: The Cleaning Supplies Closet!

So, we started back to our regular homeschool schedule today… and well, while it was a good day, I’m still really dragging. My doctor has cleared me to be able to get up and around, provided I take it easy.
I’m glad that I’m no longer sequestered to the sofa like I was this weekend, but man, I am still functioning in such low gear, it seems. Everything takes me twice or four times as long and then I have to stop and rest for awhile.
I did make it to the chiropractor this afternoon and then to a little bit of Silas’ baseball game tonight. But I felt like an old woman that I could only make it through two innings before I needed to come home and crash on the sofa.
However, I’m so happy to be getting a little stronger with each passing day. And I’m also really happy about how much sleep I’ve been getting!
The last two nights, I’ve been asleep by 9:30 p.m. — and then I’ve woken up before my alarm went off feeling completely rested. I can’t remember the last time that has happened two nights in row. Maybe I’ll actually turn this into a long-term habit??

Today’s project for the 5-day Homemaking Challenge was to tackle a closet. I chose the cleaning supply closet since it’s been in dire need of a makeover for months and months.

I posted this on Instagram and said: #KonMari comes to the cleaning closet! Yikes!! Taking everything out of one closet is a pretty scary task!
(Also, the black and white filter makes it look a little more artsy and a little less like total chaos, don’t you think?? If only there was a filter that could also whip this closet into shape with the touch of a button!) #reallife #homemaking #organization

So. much. better!

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up Review (Part 2)
If you missed Part 1 of this review, read it here.
So, I fully expected that I wouldn’t like part 2 of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up as much as I liked part 1. But folks, I actually think I liked this section even better!
Visualize your destination.
This section starts off by encouraging you to really step back and examine why and what. Why do you want to have more organization in your life (“Before you start tidying, look at the lifestyle you aspire to and ask yourself, ‘Why do I want to tidy?'”) and what does a tidy home and life look like to you.
Ask: Does it spark joy?
This question really got me to thinking. The author says: “We should be choosing what we want to keep, not what we want to get rid of.”
I actually spent a little time looking at the #KonMari hashtag on Instagram today and was so inspired by some of the beautiful spaces I saw there. You know that I’m usually more of a utilitarian sort of person, however, I was really motivated by and drawn to the clean and welcoming pictures I saw on that stream.
It made me want to look for ways to make the spaces in our home more inviting. I don’t know what that means exactly or what that looks like, but I’m going to start doing a better job of paying attention to what types of colors and patterns and fabrics I’m drawn to and to see what happens when I sprinkle these types of things in our every day spaces.
Always think in terms of category, not place.
As I mentioned yesterday, the Marie encourages you to go through your home by category, not by location. She suggests getting out all the items in that category, putting them in one place, and handling each item asking yourself, “Does this spark joy?”
She says to tackle clothes first, then books, papers, miscellany, and lastly, mementos. I’m planning to try this out with some items in our home in the next few days to see how it goes!
Finally…
Here are two quotes that were too thought-provoking not to share:
- “The urge to point out someone else’s failure to tidy is usually a sign that you are neglecting to take care of your own space.”
- “To truly cherish the things that are important to you, you must first discard those that have outlived their purpose.”
Did you read this section along with me today? If so, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it — or your thoughts on what I shared above. Do you agree or disagree?

Today’s Homemaking Challenge Assignment Results: The Kitchen!

So, I had just planned to clean out one or two drawers in the kitchen, but y’all, I got started and I just couldn’t stop.
{It also helped that I read the first section of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and she strongly discourages only doing a little bit at a time!}
{Okay, let me clarify: I actually did stop multiple times. I worked in 20-30 minute bursts today and then would rest for an hour or so and then get up and work again. I’m being very intentional about listening to my body and not overdoing it. In fact, I even laid down and took a NAP this afternoon — something that I rarely, rarely ever do!}

I had some help!

My great grandma painted these — one of my very favorite kitchen items!

How short people clean their kitchen cupboards. Notice my total “I’m in lazy mode yoga pant look”. I wasn’t joking when I said that I stopped and rested repeatedly today!
{Also, if you look closely, you can see the nice bruise that the IV left on my hand.}

How about the organized look I’ve got going on there?!? Yikes!

So here’s the truth: I had no stinkin’ idea that I had so much random stuff in the kitchen that was just taking up space and serving no good purpose. It feels SO amazing to have gotten rid of 4 BOXES of stuff and to now only have items that I absolutely love and use regularly my kitchen.
Okay, well, I’m not sure that the spinach still in the fridge qualifies as something that I love, but I didn’t get that ruthless! 😉

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up Review (Part 1)
I have heard so many rave reviews of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and have been meaning to start it for a number of weeks. But I wanted to wait until I had enough margin in my life to actually put the book into practice, not just read it and wish I could follow through with it! 🙂
So since I have a quieter week this week, I decided to dive into it — and to be brave enough to blog my thoughts as I read it. (The book is broken up into five different parts, so I’ll be reading one part per day this week and blogging my thoughts fresh after reading it.)
Why Can’t I Keep My House in Order?
The first section was called Why Can’t I Keep My House in Order? And it started out with a bang — not only by making a case for why you need to tidy up your space (“When you put your life in order, you put your affairs and past in order, too.”) but on why you need to completely rethink your approach (“Success is 90 percent dependent upon our mindset.”)
Marie Kondo, the author, did a great job of convincing readers to give her methods a try. She also did a fantastic job persuading readers why other organizational methods such as doing a little bit at a time, just don’t work well.
“If you tidy up in one shot rather than little by little, you can dramatically change your mindset.”
Part of me loved her sort of all or nothing approach. I loved that she promises that once you overhaul your home with her methods, it will not only transform your life, but that you will never need to do such an overhaul again.
That alone was pretty impressive to me. We live fairly clutter-free, minimalist lives — or so I thought before I dug into my kitchen today (more on that in my Homemaking Challenge report post tonight!) — but I have to stay on top of the clutter. This means that I have to go through our house regularly and clear out clutter and this also means that at least once a year, I do a thorough top to bottom house decluttering.
So I’m very curious to read more and hear how Marie makes good on claims that once you’ve done this whole house tidying, you don’t need to do much maintenance. If she could save me from needing to spend a week decluttering every year, I would be all over that.

“The KonMari Method I describe in this book is not a mere set of rules on how to sort, organize, and put things away. It is a guide to acquiring the right mindset for creating order and becoming a tidy person.”
One particular nugget in this first section intrigued me and that was the suggestion to tidy by category, not by location. Instead of tidying the girl’s room or the living room, she suggests tackling clothing and then books and so forth.
I’m still not sure how that all works out — especially because I feel like I have a number of items that would fall under the miscellaneous category. Again, I’ll wait to see how she fleshes the details out more on this.
“People cannot change their habits without first changing their thinking.”
So far, I’m loving the book. It’s inspiring me, it’s challenging me, and it’s leaving me hungry for more. I can’t wait to read tomorrow’s section and let you know what I think of it!
If you read pages 1-33 today, I’d love to hear your thoughts on what you read! Tell us in the comments.
I dare you to FLY!

My friend, Beth, from RedandHoney.com, gave this mug to me recently and I love the reminder!
“It’s not enough to have feathers, you must dare to fly!”
Do you want to make a difference with your life? Use the feathers you were given. The world needs your story, your talents, your gifts.
You’ll probably feel scared to jump out and try to fly. Do it anyway.
You’ll probably have some struggles along the way. Keep at it.
You’ll probably make some mistakes along the journey. Don’t give up!
Be brave. Jump out and use the feathers you were given.
Use your gifts. Share your story. Exercise your talents. Dare to fly!
Psst! I shared more about this on Periscope this morning. You can watch my video here for the next 24 hours (just click on the Play button).

5 Things I’m Loving This Week (+ a health update)

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve shared a 5 Things I’m Loving post and, because of that, I had a hard time picking just 5 things to share! But here’s what I finally narrowed the list down to:
1. My New Coloring Book
I finished my first page from my new grown-up coloring book (see above). I’m sort of embarrassed to be sharing it here because I graduated Kindergarten a long time ago… And it kind of feels like I’m displaying my elementary school art project or something. 🙂
But then I thought about it more and realized that maybe seeing me take time to invest in creative and relaxing pursuits like coloring will inspire you to consider doing the same.
I also realize that, the older I get, the less I care what other people think. If it makes me happy, I’m going to do it, even if it seems juvenile. Okay well, within reason and all. 🙂

2. For the Love by Jen Hatmaker
I’ve mentioned this book a few times this week on my live video scopes (Are you following me on Periscope?? It’s so much fun! Just download the app and search for MoneySavingMom to follow me!)
This book is laugh-out-loud funny, but packed with many, many thought-provoking nuggets. You probably won’t agree with everything in it (I didn’t either!), but I think it will really make you think and re-examine relationships. And I’m almost positive it will make you laugh!
Note: I enjoyed the first half of the book better than the second half. I’m not exactly sure that I can pin-point why, but just thought I should put it out there. Also, the book is a little all over the place and the chapters feel more like essays or blog posts on different topics, not a cohesive compilation that builds upon itself and needs each chapter to make the whole book what it is.

3. Laughter — Just When You Need It
So, to be perfectly honest, this was a really rough week. Not only was I facing my first-ever surgery and was kind of unsettled and nervous about that, but I ended up getting really sick — with a fever and nausea. I also had a lot of business projects going on and was feeling overwhelmed and exhausted.
In addition, since Jesse’s mom died of cervical cancer when he was 12 and the fact that his wife had a cervical cancer scare and had to have surgery to remove a mass on her cervix dredged up all sorts of emotions for Jesse. He was frustrated, stressed, upset, and grieving all at once — and this caught me way off guard.
I’m usually a strong, even keel, upbeat person, but this week, I felt tired, weak, and anxious. So I looked for things to laugh about — because I desperately needed to laugh.
This photo above made me laugh so hard one day. I shared it on my Instagram account and someone mentioned looking up the recipe for ice cubes on Food.com. I cried tears I was laughing so hard reading some of the reviews on that recipe.

Almost ready to be wheeled into surgery… I’m so rocking the no make up, compression sock, hospital gown look. Or not. 😉
4. The Amazingly Loving, Caring, and Supportive People in My Life
Folks, it’s hard to describe in proper words the kind of support we had in our lives this week. It was humbling and so good for me to be on the receiving end — even though it is very hard for me to receive.
So many people offered to help and with each offer, I wanted to just say, “We’re fine!” But the truth was: we weren’t fine. We were struggling and feeling beat down and worn out.
The meals, the flowers, the prayers, the texts, the emails, the comments, the help with our kids, the many more additional offers to help… it was incredibly encouraging and made us feel so loved and surrounded with support.
And it inspired me to look for more ways to reach out and help others when they are going through hard times, too.

5. No Cancer Diagnosis
I saved this for last, because it was our biggest news of the week. On Friday, we got the all clear, NO CANCER verdict from the doctor.
After hearing the news and feeling the relief it brought, I realized that I had sort of been holding my breath to make it through the surgery and to find out the final results of the biopsy (the doctor had told us that they were pretty sure it wasn’t cancer, but we were waiting to have the test results back that up).
I celebrated with graham crackers and ginger ale at the hospital — because I’m all wild like that. 😉 And then slept for 11 hours straight that night.
We have learned so much during the last whirlwind two weeks. We’ve grown as a couple. We have new compassion for people who are waiting on test results, facing surgery, or in the middle of some very unexpected and hard-to-process news. And we feel so humbled by all of the love and support people have heaped upon us — which has inspired us to look for practical and specific ways to love others well.
Thank you, all of you, for how you’ve rallied around our family the past few weeks. We can’t begin to tell you what it’s meant to us! And I’m so excited to (hopefully!) be back to normal life next week!
What are YOU loving this week? Tell us in the comments!
6 Ways Teachers Can Make Money From Home

Guest post from Bethany of MathGeekMama.com:
For as long as I can remember, I’ve dreamed of being a teacher. The only question, really, was what to teach, because I simply love learning and had a hard time settling on just one subject!
What I was not expecting, however, was that I would get pregnant at a young age, and then have four kids in four years! I was also not expecting to have such a strong desire to stay home with my children, or to homeschool. That was never part of my plan!
But God had a bigger, more perfect plan for our family, and that has meant giving up my dream of teaching high school in exchange for a new dream: staying home to homeschool the four most amazing kids on the planet!
Because of my teaching background and experience, however, I have been able to find other ways to bring in some extra money for our family, even while staying home.
If you are a teacher, here are some ways you can make some extra cash from home:
1. Tutor Local Students:
Depending on what age and subject you teach, you can likely find a handful of students to tutor in the evenings or on weekends. If you’re not sure where to find students, try posting fliers at the local library or local schools.
Another idea is to hand out business cards to the school secretaries or classroom teachers so that when parents are looking for a tutor they can give them your card.
And if you live in a larger city, you may be interested in Wyzant. This is a service that works as a middleman between the tutor and the student. One benefit of this service is that parents pay through Wyzant, meaning you don’t have to be the one to ask for payments or handle invoices.
2. Tutor Online:
There are also online tutoring sites that allow you to work and teach from your computer. One benefit to this type of tutoring is that you can work from anywhere, at anytime, and you don’t have to factor in travelling expenses. The downside (in my experience) is that it can be difficult to get hired on with some of the larger sites because so many people want to work for them.
Some sites you might be interested in are Tutor.com, Ask A Nerd, InstaEDU or MathCrunch.
3. Teach Online:
If you are no longer in the classroom, but really miss teaching, you may be able to find a job teaching at an online school.
Online options are becoming increasingly popular, so do some research to see what’s available for your area of expertise. A great place to start is K-12’s job board, which often has a variety of opportunities available.
4. Sell Teaching Materials:
If you create your own teaching materials, you can sell them online!
There are lots of places to share your products, but some popular options are Teachers Pay Teachers, Teachers Notebook and Educents. This is an especially great option if you already have materials created!
5. Become an eBook Editor:
Self-published eBooks are an ever-growing market, and with it comes a need for skilled editors.
If you are an English teacher with an eye for grammar and punctuation, this may be a great fit for you!
6. Start a Blog:
If you are willing to think long term, maybe you should consider blogging. There is a huge amount of potential to make a part time or even full time income from blogging.
It’s hard work, but if you’re willing to put in the time and effort, it can be a great way to share your passion and knowledge of teaching with other teachers and homeschoolers, as well as help support your family!
If you are a current teacher who would like a little extra cash, or a teacher who is no longer in the classroom, maybe one of these options is a good fit for you!
Bethany is the mom behind the blog MathGeekMama.com, a website dedicated to helping parents and educators teach math in a way that is fun and engaging, while building a strong conceptual understanding of mathematics. She also shares free math teaching materials and games for kids of all ages.
