Welcome to my series all about our recent family trip to South Africa in July. I’m recounting some of our favorite experiences, lessons we learned, travel tips, and some of the most memorable stories and takeaways. To read all of the posts in this series, click here.

One of the highlights of our trip to South Africa was getting to see a big dream of mine come to fruition. This story is years in the making. I’ve only been a part of it for the past 4 years. But it started well before that.

And you all played a really big part in this story, even though you may not have known it.

This beautiful lady standing right next to me is Elizabeth. She is one of the most vivacious, energetic, joyful, and faith-filled women I have ever met. She runs the Reagoboka Drop-in Centre and Early Childhood Development Centre — a centre founded by her mom many years ago that serves the most needy and vulnerable children in this community.

The first time I met Elizabeth and her mother, back in 2014, I was pretty blown away. Here’s what I wrote about that experience:

[When we pulled up to the] Reagoboka Drop-in Centre and Early Childhood Development Centre, sparks of hope came hitting at us from all directions. Elizabeth, the beaming leader of these centers came running out to greet us.

She was excitedly laughing and exclaiming over and over again about all of the wonderful things happening in their centers. She was the epitome of hope.

But here’s the thing: in many people’s eyes, she shouldn’t have hope. In fact, she should be exhausted, overwhelmed, and discouraged. She’s worked incredibly hard, managed what little she has well, and has poured out herself for her community.

In the process, she’s hit roadblock after roadblock after roadblock. Lisa-Jo shared more of her story tonight and you must go read it right now.

Because Elizabeth has chosen to persevere in spite of the odds, because she’s chosen to make the most of the little she has, because she’s chosen to do all she can to make an impact in her community, literally hundreds of children have been fed, cared for, loved on, and invested in over these past years she’s been running the home.

And we got to meet these children and we were blown away by the joy in their faces, the spark in their eyes, and zest they all have for life.

We played with the children, held the little ones, met the incredible team of Care Givers, asked lots of questions, saw their tiny facilities and how they are making the most of them for the 100+ children they currently help, and ate lunch with them.

The children were all smiles and hugs and the Care Givers were laughing and playing with the kids and exclaiming to us how much they loved working with the children and helping the community. All around, we saw hope bursting forth. I was contagious and inspiring.

And it was all because one woman chose to not be overwhelmed by her limited circumstances, but to do what she could, with what she had.

She has not only inspired and impacted countless families in this community, but her life will forever impact mine.

As I learned more of Elizabeth and Gogo’s story, I was humbled, inspired, and deeply moved. You can read a more detailed version of their story here, but the basic details are that this centre was started by Elizabeth’s mother and she was running it from her own home with her own pension money.

This centre provides nutritious food, educational support, social activities, leadership training, and discipleship and serves 100 to 200 of the most vulnerable kids in this community every week.

They didn’t have space in Gogo’s small house to teach and help all of these kids, but they made the decision to trust God and never turn a child away. They only had one small classroom so they would rotate classes — one class at a time — in order to accommodate all of the children with the little space they had.

God always provided for them. They gave the little that they had and it made such an impact.

The chief of their village saw what amazing work they were doing and gave them the land next door to Gogo’s house. When we visited in 2014, Gogo and Elizabeth shared this with me and told me how they believed God was going to provide a building for them.

They believed this so strongly that they had even drawn plans up for this building.

In our very affluent culture, it’s hard for us to wrap our heads around just how crazy this whole idea was. They barely had enough money to pay their basic expenses and were living in complete faith to have enough to pay for feeding and teaching all of these children who were coming to their centre. They didn’t know anyone who would be in a position to help them out financially or have the money to help them with this building.

But they had faith that God was going to provide.

And as I stood on the land with them and looked at the plans and heard their vision for this building, I knew God was calling me to step into this story and be a part of it.

I came home and Jesse and I talked about what this would look like. We decided to give away 25% of all of the proceeds from the Make Over Your Mornings launch.

Your purchases on that launch day helped pay for the bricks and the concrete and the local labor and the classroom supplies to build a brand-new two-room classroom! And we got to unveil it to the teachers and children on our second trip to South Africa in October, 2014. (Read all about that unveiling here.)

As I wrote on that trip:

It. Was. Amazing!!! To think that all of us together are having a little part in making a BIG difference in this community of very vulnerable children — it’s surreal, humbling, and goose-bump-inducing.

THANK YOU for partnering with me to be the hands and feet of Jesus on this project!!! I wish you could have been there to share in the excitement and see and hear the gratitude they expressed to us.

But a two-room classroom was just the start. We had hopes and dreams of building a large building that would house more classrooms, a kitchen, offices, storage, meeting rooms, and more. 

We designated a percentage of the profits from some more product launches to this, we gave money we had in savings, we got friends to help give toward this, and we prayed and did more product launches.

It was a much longer process than I had envisioned. When we went to South Africa for the third time (in September 2015), the building was close to finished, but still needed quite a bit of work and there were quite a bit more funds needed to finish it out.

But God continued to provide and continued to bless our business and put it on the hearts of others to give to the building fund, too.

And a few weeks ago, I got to stand in those beautifully completed buildings and see how God had brought me to South Africa four years ago to be the answer to Elizabeth and Gogo’s many prayers.

Gogo passed away this year, but not before getting to see the fulfillment and answer to her prayers in those buildings! We felt her presence and prayers there as we stood in the completed buildings and marveled at what God has done.

And here are some of the pictures from our trip… I think they speak more than words ever could!

I get teary-eyed just looking at these photos. To think of what God has done. I never could have dreamed or imagined!

One of my favorite places to visit on our trip to South Africa was the Angels of Grace Day Care Centre. We hadn’t been there before and it was this adorable centre run by a beautiful woman named, Sinah.


They warned us before we went in that some of the little kids would likely cry because they aren’t used to seeing white people. But while there were definitely some kids who cried, others were so happy and willing to let us hold them!

I loved watching my kids get to love on these precious kiddos.

My heart just melted seeing my girls connect with these babies and toddlers!

The buildings are so well kept up and you could tell that the workers truly loved the kids and the kids had such a connection with them.

Take Action Ministry had recently hosted a work day with people from local churches and they had painted the buildings in these bright colors and fun designs!

These are their current toilets. Sinah is making the bricks and they are slowly building a new bathroom for the kids.

Sinah was such an inspiring woman. Not only does she love on these kids so well, she also keeps her centre in tip-top shape and made all of the bricks for all of the buildings herself!

As I saw her energy and zest for life and how she makes the most of everything, even though she has very little financial resources, I was intrigued why she would be so motivated to run this centre, keep it so immaculate, work so hard to make a difference in this poor community, make bricks, and oversee building projects.

So I asked her something like, “What motivates you? Why are you doing this?”

She looked at me and matter of factly said, “There’s work to be done so I get up and do the work.”

Ya’ll, we need more people like Sinah in this world.

People who don’t sit around and wait for things to be handed to them.

People who don’t complain about how hard their life is or how unfair it is or how little they have.

People who seize the opportunity — no matter how little — in front of them and run with it.

People who are willing to put in the hard, hard work to make a difference.

My life will forever be impacted as a result of meeting Sinah. And I’m so grateful that we can have a little part in coming alongside and supporting her through Take Action Ministry.

A Peek Into Our Week (+ an update on my goals for 2018)

Welcome to my weekly post I share a peek into our lives, talk about things I’m loving, share links to interesting articles or helpful ideas I’ve collected throughout the past week, and just talk about whatever is on my heart! ?

I flew back from India on Monday evening/Tuesday (I’ll be sharing a few posts in a few weeks about my time there — once I finish sharing the posts from our South Africa trip!). Many of you asked me questions about the airplane bathrooms since I said that I wash my face/brush my teeth/take my contacts out, etc. on flights.

I try to choose a time when the lights are out and most people are sleeping so that I’m not “hogging” the bathroom when others might be waiting. And then I bring my bathroom bag in and my nose bottle and water bottle and do my nightly bathroom routine (wash face/take contacts out/brush teeth/do the sinus rinse) before getting ready to sleep and then my morning routine (wash face/put contacts in/brush teeth) when I wake up.

I then moisturize my face and put on my makeup when I’m back in my seat and we’re about an hour from landing. This helps me feel a little fresher when getting off a long 15+ hour flight! 🙂

After 25+ hours on flights and in airports, it was SO good to be home!

And we jumped right back into life because the kids had already started school when I got back!

Every year, we pray and talk and research and decide what schooling option is best for each individual child based upon their needs and where they are at both emotionally, spiritually, and academically.

Last year, we started the year with one being homeschooled and two in the same Classical school. For a variety of reasons, we ended the year with one in a new-to-us Classical school, another in another new-to-us Christian school, and one in the original Classical school.

Was it unconventional? Yes. But it ended up being exactly what each child needed and they were so happy we chose to go the routes we did.

This year, Kaitlynn and Silas are at the little Classical school that we fell so much in love with last year when Kaitlynn switched to it mid-year. Kathrynne is going to the same Christian school that she switched to mid-year last year. It has been such a good fit for her!

We’re excited to see what this year holds for each child and are so grateful for the teachers who come are walking alongside us in this journey and pouring into and investing in our kids.

Note: Kathrynne started this week with back-to-school camp, so she got to dress super casual, including sporting Jesse’s college sweatshirt! ?

How I Stay More Organized as a Business Owner

One of the best ways I keep my life and blogging/business work organized is by writing a time-blocked to do list every night before bed.

Yes, this takes some thought and effort, but it means that I am 150% more productive, focused, and calm the next day.

I look at my Google calendar (aka my “brain”) to see what appointments and events and meetings are scheduled for the next day + what projects and tasks I’ve assigned to that day to complete or work on.

Then, I sit down and hand write out my schedule for the day. I always leave buffer time in the afternoons and evenings to just hang out and be with my kids/husband. But now that the kids are back in school, our morning routine and my work time (from 8 am to 4 pm every day) is pretty regimented.

Having a time blocked to do list not only means that our mornings run much more smoothly, but it also means that I know exactly what I need to focus on in what order when I open up my computer for the day.

If you don’t have a plan, there’s a good chance you’ll spend most of the day going around in circles just putting out “fires”. And at the end of the day, you’ll probably not have a lot to show for it.

Whether you have 30 mins a day to devote to blogging or it’s your full-time gig, I encourage you to consider writing out a simple plan for how you’ll spend your blogging time. Put the most important priorities first on the list and the lesser pressing priorities at the bottom. That way, if you only get through half your list, you’ve at least spent your time tackling the projects that mattered most… and you didn’t just waste it scrolling through endless posts on social media!

From My Heart…

Earlier this week, one of the kids was struggling with their homework. I was working alongside them and they kept expressing their frustration, “I can’t do this! This is too hard! I’m going to fail all my projects!”

This is our perfectionist child and we’ve had to learn over the years that statements like, “Do your best! That’s all that matters!” don’t do anything but serve to further frustrate them.

In the past, I’ve even snapped at this child and said things like, “would you just stop being so frustrated?!? This is not that big of a deal.”

But in their world, it IS a big deal and they want to know that Mom cares and hears them and is there for them.

So instead of saying any of those things, I came up with a plan… because I’ve learned that a simple plan speaks this child’s language. I said, “This is a LOT that you’ve been assigned, but we have all evening to work on it. So let’s do this: We’re going to set a timer: 20 minutes to work on homework. 10 minutes to do something fun.” And back and forth between work and fun we went.

This made all the difference! This child went from feeling stressed to feeling motivated. We broke the projects down into small pieces and just focused on that one piece at a time. And then we took a break to have some fun. Then, we were back at it.

Within 2 hours, the projects were done and my child felt happy and satisfied. And I was so grateful… grateful that I didn’t just try to slap a platitude onto their frustration like I used to or, worse yet, shut them down by expressing frustration over their frustration.

This last year of changing how I parent and slowing down and really learning to listen to what my kids are actually communicating and then taking time to speak words of life to them has completely changed our home.

Often, our kids don’t need us to preach sermons at them; they need us to get down in the trenches with them, look into their eyes, let them know that they aren’t alone, that their frustration is heard, and then help them devise a plan of action to walk through the tough assignment.

2018 Goals Update

Personal Goals

1. Read 100 non-self-help books that will build me up/encourage me/inspire me/recharge me. (Fiction/story-driven/biographies/inspirational living books/devotionals.) See the list of 44 books I plan to read this year.

**Progress: 48 books read so far this year

2. Read through the entire Bible.

**Progress: I’m using the Robert Murray M’Cheyne plan and am all caught up— yay!

3. Write one handwritten note to someone every week.

**Progress: 33 notes written so far this year

4. Run 500 miles.

**Progress: 300 miles run so far

Marriage Goal

5. Go on an overnight trip with Jesse without the kids.Jesse and I went to NYC together in January.

Family Goals

6. Read 10 books aloud with the kids.

**Progress: I’ve finished two books so far and we’re working on a third right now.

7. Take the kids to South Africa. We took this trip in July. What a memorable experience!

8. Go on a family road trip.

**Progress: We’ve been researching some options for this and are hoping to make this happen over Fall Break. Stay tuned!

Financial Goals

9. Save up to pay cash to finish off an office for me and workout room for Jesse and me in the basement in our new house.

**Progress: The workout room is DONE and the office is getting close to being done!

10. Replenish our Emergency Fund (we dipped into it to replace my car when it got totaled because of the carpet beetle infestation.)

Business Goals

11. Increase our gross income from the business by 8%.

12. Launch 5 new courses.

My Word for 2018 is Slow and, in the spirit of that word, I’m taking one day each week (Wednesday) off — I’ll be unplugged and offline and plan to move at a slower pace, take time to do things that refresh me, and just really focus on being present and savoring the moment.

Each week, I’ll be sharing a photographic peek into my Slow Day. Enjoy a little peek into our lives!

I got home from India on Tuesday afternoon and promptly spent the rest of day in bed as I was recovering from Dehli Belly. Kathrynne was gone at Back-to-School camp, so I spent the afternoon and evening hanging out with Silas, Kaitlynn, and Jesse. It was so good to be home.

Wednesday morning, Jesse helped the kids get ready for school since I was still not feeling great. I tried to get up and get some things done and quickly realized I needed to take advantage of having a Slow Day and make this day really slow.

Jesse took the kids to school and I stayed in bed and finished reading this book.

I still had no appetite, but knew I really needed to eat, so Jesse made me soup with bone broth, chicken, and veggies. After a few days of pretty much only eating crackers and rehydration drinks, it felt good to put some really nourishing foods in my body.

Jesse also went and got me some of these drinks — my favorites. I’m working hard to restore my gut after I think it got kind of wrecked with the sickness, not having fresh nourishing foods, and taking some medications when I was so sick (I hate taking medicine and try to avoid it, especially something as strong as Cipro, but sometimes, you just gotta do what you gotta do!)

I spent the rest of the morning and afternoon reading this book and resting and taking a nap.

When the kids came home, I helped Silas with his homework. And then I went to bed pretty much right after dinner (hello, 10 1/2 hour India time difference)

I’m currently challenging myself to stick with a $70 grocery budget for our family of five. This includes almost all of our breakfasts, lunches, snacks, and dinners + most household products (toiletries, laundry soap, etc.).

Kroger! I’ve missed you! And of course, when I was gone to India, you had to have some fantastic deals that I missed. I saw them online and wished I could fly back just to get them… but alas, that wasn’t really feasible.

(I did get to go to a grocery store called More while I was in India. The prices were pretty downright incredible! I took a bunch of pictures and will do a post about that sometime in the next few weeks. Our Indian friends found it quite funny that I was so excited about all of the deals there and how cheaply I could feed our family. Of course, considering the whole not using toilet paper thing and the fact that I got sick as a dog with Dehli Belly at the end of the trip, I think I’ll happily stick with shopping at Kroger here in the US!)

The kids are back in school and that means that I can swing by Kroger on the way home from school drop offs. I actually drive right by two different Kroger stores on the way home, believe it or not! Best of all, I can run into Kroger at the perfect time of day to shop: before 8 a.m.! Not only are there usually some good markdowns, but there also is usually almost no one at the store!

The 3 Books I Read Last Week

Welcome to my weekly Book-ish post where I share what I’ve been reading and watching recently. If you missed it, you can see my Reading Goals for 2018 and 44 Books I Plan to Read This Year.

And it’s week #6 of reading 3 books in a week! I’m so excited that I’m continuing on with this trend! Here are the three books I finished this past week:

1. Hotel On the Corner of Bitter & Sweet

This was a book I’ve been wanting to read for a few years. I thought it did a great job of giving insight into what Japanese and Chinese families in the US experienced during World War II — a topic that I feel like is rarely covered and is really important.

It was a sweet story. Sad, in many ways. But also very beautiful. It was quite predictable and I had guessed the ending pretty soon into it, but I still enjoyed it.

2. Finding Selah

I thought this would be a great book to read as my Word of 2018 is SLOW. It wasn’t what I expected, but there were some encouraging tidbits and good reminders. It reads pretty memoir-like and is the story of how the author discovered peace in the midst of a lot of grief and unexpected upheaval in her life.

3. Shrapnel

This book has been on my To Read pile for quite awhile. It was written by a reader who sent a long note with it to tell me she was inspired to find the time to write it as a result of reading Money-Making Mom. Those types of notes always humble me and blow me away!

Anyway, it was a pretty engaging read and didn’t end at all like I expected. That said, I thought parts of it were a little bit more dramatic and somewhat unrealistic, but other parts were beautifully raw and real and I loved that.

It’s not at all written from a Christian standpoint and I felt like it was missing so much that it could have because of this. It also has some language and is a little more edgy than most novels I read. However, I felt like it did such a great job of giving insight into some of the struggles that military families go through and I found a lot of insight because of that.

When I Find Time to Read

People are always asking me how I find time to read. Honestly, it’s because I love to read, because I’ve chosen to prioritize it, because I don’t have a lot of other hobbies, and because I can’t not read. Also, when you love something, you usually can find ways to get creative to find time to fit it in — even if it’s in the little nooks and crannies of life.

Wow! Easily cut $80 off your grocery bill with these simple tips! I love this testimony!

A few months ago, Naomi left a comment on one of posts and said:

“We are also a family of five but we have special dietary issues. My goal this past week was to reduce our weekly food budget to $100 and it was $99! Previously, I thought that I couldn’t save money because of our food restrictions but I wasn’t really ready to try.”

I wrote her back and asked if she could share some specific tips she had implemented. Here’s what she said:

First of all, our restrictions are soy, nuts, and seeds allergies (including their oils). I myself am supposed to eat as preservative-free as possible with high fiber thrown into the mix because of a chronic medical condition. As a point of reference, I was spending about $180 a week on our food.

Here was my strategy:

1) Create a food shopping budget. I based this off of the MyPlate recommendations for food consumption. On my shopping list, I put a dollar amount next to each category that I was shopping. For example, Fruits were allotted $20. Grains were $13 and so on. (My categories are Fruits, Vegetables, Grains, Dairy and Protein.)

2) Don’t make a meal plan until I see the local sales. I got this tip from you! I looked all the sale leaflets up online and filled in my shopping list categories, being careful to write down the price of what I was expecting to buy to stay with my category’s budgeted amount.

3) Shop the sales at my local Kroger, Aldi and Fresh Thyme Farmers Market. For us, Thursday is “Double Ad Day” at Fresh Thyme, where the previous and coming week’s sales are all up for grabs.

4) I did all my shopping on one day and kept a running total of each category on my shopping list. I knew when I hit $13 for grains.

5) Don’t buy pre-packaged items. A big key for me to make this work for our family was to buy only “ingredient items,” no prepackaged foods. For breakfast this week, we are eating muesli but instead of buying an allergen friendly muesli, I bought the ingredients to make my own.

6) Allow some wiggle room for extras. I gave myself $25 for extras. Fats and sugars fell under this category, along with coffee beans and tea. I used some of this to buy marked down ground beef I hadn’t been planning on purchasing ahead of time. I saved so much, we used some extra money to buy our favorite allergen friendly pizza.

Thanks for inspiring me to try to save! Our pantry and refrigerator are stocked for the week and I feel pleased with myself for saving money.

Find great clothing deals on Amazon with these 5 simple tips!!

I may be the only person on the planet who loves to find great clothing deals on Amazon and thinks that Amazon is the best place to buy clothes from, but some of my favorite fashion finds have been from Amazon! (Scroll to the bottom of this post for some of my recommendations!)

And I love that most Prime eligible clothing offers FREE shipping and FREE returns! So if something doesn’t fit or I end up hating it, I can just send it right back without worrying about losing money on the purchase.

As I’ve been sharing about some of my favorite Amazon clothing deals recently, some of you have asked how to find the best deals on budget-friendly clothing on Amazon.

Amazon’s search feature is not set up well to find exactly what you are looking for, so you might have to do some poking around.

Here are 5 simple tips to find great clothing deals on Amazon…

1. Be willing to dig.

It’s not always easy to find what you’re looking for at first. Most the time, you have to put in specific search terms to find exactly what you’re looking for. Don’t give up within a few tries; it’s probably there if you’re willing to dig! Use as specific of search terms as possible. If you know a brand name and specific type of what you’re looking for, be sure to include those details in the search terms. Amazon carries a LOT of brands and you might be surprised what you find and the prices they are offering.

What I’ve found works best is to find a few brands that I love and then buy multiple colors of that same item once I know that I love it (because I might be branching out some, but I’m still boring enough to have multiple colors of the same shirt. Hey, if I like it a lot and it fits really well, it’s so much easier to just have the same shirt in different colors!!)

2. Check the related searches.

If you find an item you love, be sure to scroll down on the page to see the “Related Searches” items and the “People Who Bought This Also Bought” selections. In both cases, I’ll often find some great options there that I might not have found just by searching. And both of these tools often turn up some great finds that are in similar styles to what I love!

3. Look for the best reviewed items.

Amazon reviews are a goldmine of helpful information! Often, items will look amazing in the picture, but if you read the reviews, you’ll discover that the quality isn’t great or the sizing is off. I always search for clothes that have at least a 4 star average from 50+ people. To make this easier, you can narrow your search to show only these items when you select 4+ star reviews option on the sidebar.

4. Always check the shipping price.

Many clothes ship free to Amazon Prime members or with a qualified $49 purchase. Make sure you check the shipping price before falling in love with something — because sometimes it won’t be free and might be as high as $5-$6.

If something doesn’t fit, most Amazon clothes purchases can be returned for free, but you have to read the details because different sellers are different. (A general rule of thumb is that if it’s Prime eligible, it usually offers free returns with the free shipping. But be sure to double check!)

5. Look to see where something is made/ships from.

Some of Amazon’s clothing ships from China and takes 4-6 weeks to arrive. Be aware of this when you are looking at items — especially if you are hoping to get them within in a few days.

Recipes for a Crowd of People on Vacation

Need some ideas for food to make while on vacation with a crowd? Two weeks ago, my entire extended family (except my brother who is working on the The Wilds camp this summer and couldn’t take time off) went to Bull Shoals Lake.

We’ve been doing this trip together as a family since before I was married. The number of people who come each year has slowly grown as my siblings have gotten married and we’ve had babies. We’re now up to 26 people total (My parents, my six siblings, plus their spouses and kids!)

On this trip, we stay in cabins that have kitchens so we bring food and make it there for all but one night. We all pitch in to help with meals, ingredients, cooking, baking, and clean up. This way, there’s not too much work on any one person’s shoulders.

How We Make This Work

Many of you asked for details on what we cook and how it works, so I’m posting our entire menu plan so you can get ideas on recipes for a crowd of people. 🙂

My sister planned the menus based upon what she knows that everyone would like/eat/would give some options for those on special diets or who have food allergies and then she put together a sign up form on TakeThemaMeal.com for everyone to sign up for what they wanted to bring.

I know that this might not work in some families, but because of the dynamics of our family, this works really well for us. It’s also nice because then everyone can sign up for what types of food they like to bring or what meals they’d prefer to help make.

My sister set up the sign up sheet so that every menu item was on a different line and if you signed up for something, you were responsible to get the ingredients for it and make it for that meal.

Some of the items were really easy things, like bringing a jar of pickles or a bag of tater tots. Others were a little more time intensive, like making bread or mashed potatoes or a main dish.

Salad Bar, Leftovers, Snack-y Foods (everyone brings some snack type foods to contribute and share)

Dinners:

  • Spaghetti Pie, Green Beans, Garlic Bread, Lettuce Salad, Fruit
  • Papa John’s Pizza (we had a gift card and there was a 30% off coupon, so we ended up getting a LOT of pizza for very little out of pocket!)
  • Grilled Chicken, Mashed Potatoes, Roasted Broccoli, Lettuce Salad, Fruit, Biscuits
  • Hamburgers/Hot Dogs, Watermelon, French Fries, Corn on the Cob, Veggie Tray, Steamed Veggies
  • Chicken Bean Burritos (topped with lettuce, sour cream, and salsa) Fried Rice, Fruit

And that’s that! I did want to mention that some of the meals were more allergy-friendly than others, so on a few of the nights where they weren’t as allergen-friendly, those with food allergies made some other for the main dish.

And it’s week #5 of reading 3 books in a week! I’m so excited that I’m continuing on with this trend!

Here are the three books I finished this past week:

1. The Broken Road

This book wasn’t what I was expecting, but as someone who has a very driven personality and who is prone to work too much or put my worth in my work, this story hit home in many ways and caused me to think and step back and examine my life and choices.

(I listened to this audiobook for free on the Libby app.)

2. The Orphan, The Widow, & Me

I really enjoyed this story (thank you to whomever out there recommended this book to me — I’m not sure of your name because it was awhile ago!). I did feel like the text could have been tightened up and the storyline made a little stronger, but overall, it was a good read and I’d recommend it.

3. Whispers of Rest

I absolutely loved Finding Spiritual Whitespace, so I was excited to read this followup book. It’s one you want to savor over a 3-4 week period (that’s what I did).

If you feel overwhelmed with your life or just need some encouragement to rest in the Lord and stop feeling like you have to control or micromanage or stress over everything, I think you’ll find this devotional helpful. Plus, it has a lot of practical ideas and advice, too!

One thing I wanted to note is that I found some parts fairly repetitive and I also noticed a number of typos. (If that kind of thing bothers you, I just thought I’d mention it.)

I flew to India yesterday and today (if you want to follow along with my trip behind-the-scenes, be sure to follow me on Instagram Stories). On the first flight from Nashville to Chicago, I had two empty seats next to me… and I made the most of it! 🙂

What We Spent Hours Watching

The CrossFit Games were last week, so we spent hours watching them live online over the course of a 4-day period. We are all pretty big fans and each have athletes that we were especially cheering for!

(We went to the CrossFit Regional competition earlier this year and got to see some of these athletes compete live so that made it even more fun!)

I love that this is something Jesse and I can enjoy together — and that the kids get in on, too!

A Peek Into Our Week (+ an update on my 2018 goals)

As I mentioned, we spent almost all of last week near Mountain Home, Arkansas at Bull Shoals Lake. It’s a family tradition for us all to get together at least once a year at this lake.

The tradition started before Jesse and I were married over 15 years ago and has continued — and now there are 27 of us total (though my brother couldn’t make it this year because he was serving as a counselor at The Wild Camp.)

Here’s a little peek into our time together…

We played lots of games — including some fun rounds of Spot It.

My dad rented two boats for the week, so we spent a LOT of time on the water.

Some of the days were a little cloudy, but mostly, the weather was beautiful — not too hot and not too cold!

I fell in love with knee-boarding on this vacation and had so much fun attempting different things (I still haven’t mastered backwards knee-boarding, but I’m determined I’m going to get it!)

Most all of us went bowling one evening. They rented out the lanes for just $16 each for an hour, so we got three lanes and a BUNCH of us bowled for every minute of that hour and had a blast — and it only cost about $51 total!!

Close to 7 pm, they turned on the strobe lights for Cosmic Bowling!

Kathrynne planned games for the younger kids every afternoon and they earned tickets which they got to cash in for prizes at the end of the week (see below).

This roll the marble game was a hit! You had to sit or stand behind the line and roll a marble and you got points based upon where the marble landed.

Most of my nieces and nephews were better than me at this game! 🙂

We also played a rousing game of Whoonu — and my 5-year-old niece beat me fair and square!!

Have you ever played this game? It was a lot harder than I expected it to be!

My sister’s daughter, Cadence, planned snacks for the younger kids on two of the afternoons (and my brother’s daughter planned snacks on the other two days).

One of the snacks was these cute apples that all of the kids got to make!

The kids really enjoyed making these!

The best part? They got to eat them after they made them!

There was a lot of double-slaloming that went on during the week. Here, two of my brothers are showing off their skills!

It was so peaceful and beautiful!

We had multiple swimming breaks in the lake.

The boys climbed up on the rocks one day and would have stayed up there for a long time if I hadn’t told them they had to come down (because I was a little afraid they were going to slip and fall!)

Kathrynne did so well at skiing this year — and even got up on one ski the second time she tried (I didn’t get a picture because I was screaming so loudly about how well she was doing!!)

And then Silas wanted to try skiing on the big skis. He’s gotten up on the kid skis before, but never on these larger skis.

The boy got up on his second try and stayed up for over 2 minutes!!

I was SO proud of him and I think he just might be able to slalom soon, too!

At the end of the week, the kids took all of their tickets and they got to cash them in for prizes that Kathrynne had in her “store” (all of these came from Dollar Tree).

The kids came in one at a time and got to redeem tickets for one item — from youngest child to oldest child.

And then, once the first round of ticket redemptions was finished, they got to do another round and choose another item.

We drove back home on Saturday — and made a stop at this place we found in Jonesboro last year. I love little coffee shops, even if I don’t drink coffee any more! (I got their cinnamon tea and had them make it like a London Fog.)

From My Heart…

This made me laugh and say ouch, because yup, there’s way more truth to it than I’d probably like to admit.

One of the reasons I chose the word SLOW for this year was because I knew I needed to work on being slower to respond. And it’s been so good to make it my goal to actually take time to think before I say something instead of just blurting out the first thing that comes to mind.

It’s still a challenge and I still have had to apologize and stick my foot in my mouth, but I’m thrilled to tell you that by making this one word my mantra, it’s actually been making a big difference.

I’m talking less and listening more — and I’m taking more time to weigh my words before talking. And it’s really making a difference. I’m even not always having to get in the last word in a conversation or discussion… which is no small miracle!

2018 Goals Update

Personal Goals

1. Read 100 non-self-help books that will build me up/encourage me/inspire me/recharge me. (Fiction/story-driven/biographies/inspirational living books/devotionals.) See the list of 44 books I plan to read this year.

**Progress: 42 books read so far this year

2. Read through the entire Bible.

**Progress: I’m using the Robert Murray M’Cheyne plan and am all caught up— yay!

3. Write one handwritten note to someone every week.

**Progress: 31 notes written so far this year

4. Run 500 miles.

**Progress: 290 miles run so far

Marriage Goal

5. Go on an overnight trip with Jesse without the kids.Jesse and I went to NYC together in January.

Family Goals

6. Read 10 books aloud with the kids.

**Progress: I’ve finished two books so far. (I have a plan for how we’re going to incorporate more reading into our schedule once school starts and we’re all driving in the car to school drop-offs every morning. For now, I’m just happy that we’re fitting in a little family reading a few times per week when we’re all in the car together driving to the pool or somewhere else. Something is better than nothing, right??)

7. Take the kids to South Africa. We took this trip in July. What a memorable experience!

8. Go on a family road trip.

**Progress: We’ve been researching some options for this and are hoping to make this happen over Fall Break. Stay tuned!

Financial Goals

9. Save up to pay cash to finish off an office for me and workout room for Jesse and me in the basement in our new house.

**Progress: The workout room is DONE and the office is getting close to being done!

10. Replenish our Emergency Fund (we dipped into it to replace my car when it got totaled because of the carpet beetle infestation.)

Business Goals

11. Increase our gross income from the business by 8%.

12. Launch 5 new courses.
