Super Savings Saturday

So, I wasn’t as disciplined as I’d hope to be this past week (am I ever, though?!), but I at least didn’t stay up until 2 a.m. any night — except for a few nights when I was up with Silas who has been having these middle-of-the-night coughing fits (Anyone have a great middle-of-the-night coughing remedy? I’m ready to try anything you want to suggest since we’d all love to be getting more sleep around here!)

And I actually did get pictures of my groceries this week, unlike last week! So I guess that means I had a more on-the-ball week, too, though I still have a laundry pile in my room (I promise it’s not the same one as last week, though!) 🙂

Dillon’s Shopping Trip: Spent $23.99 — see a complete price breakdown here.

Walmart Shopping Trip: Spent $4.19 — see a complete price breakdown here.

Super Savings Saturday: The I-Forgot-To-Take-Pictures edition

So, um, this was one of those weeks when life just flew by and every day was full of hiccups and interruptions (many of them wonderful, but unexpected nonetheless). And also, truth be told, I just fell off the organization and discipline “bandwagon” this week. For no good reason at all.

I bought eggs from my brother, went to Walgreens, Dillon’s and Aldi one evening and Jesse bought milk today. But, I only managed to snap a picture of my Walgreens trip. With all that took place this week and the disorganization which ensued, I was doing good to make it to the store and get the groceries put away. Taking pictures of the groceries completely slipped my mind until much of them were already eaten.

At any rate, you’ll just have to picture the pineapple, strawberries and other things I bought at Aldi, as well as the cereal and other deals I snagged at Dillon’s. And I promise I’ll try to be more organized (and not running around like a chicken with my head cut off!) next week and actually take pictures of my groceries.

Oh and in the spirit of being completely honest here, I have to tell you that we didn’t do a good job of following our menu plan and Jesse brought home dinner two nights this week, instead of the usual one night that we go out. And remember how I said I was training for a 5K and how I usually get up between 5-6 a.m. or earlier? Well, I didn’t exercise one single time this past week and I got up after 7:30 a.m. almost every single day.

Yes, it was just “one of those weeks”. I stayed up too late, didn’t follow the schedule and just generally seemed to have zero “groove” and discipline.

But now that I’ve confessed all that to you all, I am determined (by the grace of God), to get back on the bandwagon this week. So if any of you see me posting or replying to comments after 9:30 p.m. at night or you stop by my house and I’m in pajamas and it’s noon, you have my full permission to thoroughly reprimand me. Because I need to get out of this funk I got myself into this past week!

And now, I’m off to tackle my laundry pile and messy bedroom because I’ve promised myself I can’t go to bed tonight until the laundry’s done and my bedroom’s clean. 🙂

Super Savings Saturday: Target Trip #2: Spent $6.25, Got $20 back!

Today’s Target trip was similar to yesterday’s, only I paid a lot less out of pocket since I rolled the gift cards I had earned yesterday!

Market Pantry Salsa — $1.34
Buy 2 and use $1/2 Target coupon
$0.84 each after coupon

Market Pantry Cheese — $1.94
Buy 2 and use $1/2 Target coupon
$1.44 each after coupon

BUY 7 FROZEN ITEMS, GET $5 TARGET GIFT CARD PROMOTION ITEMS:

BirdsEye Vegetables — $1.02 each
Bought 6, used 2 $1/3 Birds-Eye or Steamfresh Varieties (IE) Printable (FF)
Free after coupon and gift card

Market Pantry Vegetables — $1.02 each
Bought 8, used 2 $1/4 coupons
$0.06 each after coupons and gift card

Old Orchard Juice — $1.19 each
Bought 3, $0.48 each after gift card

Weight Watchers SmartOnes — $1.80 each
Bought 10, used $5/10 Target coupon (no longer available) stacked with $4/10 manufacturer’s coupon
$0.19 each after coupons and gift card

Green Giant Frozen Vegetables — $1.27 each
Bought 2, used 2 $0.50/1 Green Giant coupons
$0.06 each after coupons and gift card

For some reason, I ended up having to buy 29 items to get the $20 in gift cards. When the cashier scanned the last item, it didn’t prompt her to give me the final $5 gift card, so I had her scan another juice and then it prompted it. Not sure what all went on there, but I’m not going to complain that I ended up having to buy an extra item!

I used the $25 in gift cards that I earned yesterday to pay for my total, so I only ended up having to spend $6.25 out of pocket and then I got back $20 in Target gift cards.

Super Savings Saturday: The “I-Didn’t-Cook-Clean-or-Shop” Edition

Those who are frequent readers here may have noticed I was rather absent last week. That’s because I spent all week with my husband on a cruise!

As I’ve mentioned before, we purposefully chose to go on a very inexpensive honeymoon because we knew Jesse was going to be going to law school soon after we got married. We’d both agreed that if we made it through law school debt-free and paid cash for a house by the time I was 30, we’d save up to go on a cruise. But I’d sort of assumed this was just one of those dream vacations which would never actually become reality.

So I shoved the idea to the back of my brain and pretty much forgot about it.

But Jesse didn’t and near the end of 2010, he completely shocked me by telling me he had a big surprise for me. I was baffled as to what it could be and totally giddy when he presented me with two different cruise vacation options.

Since we’d never traveled outside the U.S. before, never been on a cruise ship and never left all of our children, this was a really big deal (you moms with young children can likely empathize). In fact, just to make me feel better and more at ease, we actually left our children in December for two and half days as a trial run while Jesse and I went to Branson together. They survived beautifully and we truly had a wonderful time.

So, early last Sunday morning, we boarded a plane for Florida, leaving our three young children in the able care of our wonderful mother’s helper, and took off for our “Second Honeymoon” Cruise.

While I missed the children so much, it was really wonderful to be away with my husband — by ourselves. With no phone and little internet access, no dishes to wash, no meals to make, no diapers to change, no laundry to do, no children to wake us up in the night and basically no agenda but to just have fun and enjoy one another.

It was absolutely wonderful, though very weird. I realized that I hardly know what to do with myself without a long to-do list (not sure whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing)! We experienced all sorts of firsts and we soaked up every minute of it, got lots of time to talk through goals and areas in our lives we want to improve, we took hundreds of pictures and we laughed harder than we’ve laughed in a very long time.

We are so thankful to our mother’s helper, Jesse’s assistant and the wonderful MoneySavingMom.com team who covered all the bases at home so we could be gone this past week. We’re indebted to each of them and could never have had such a relaxing vacation without their help!

And now, back to reality and our regularly scheduled programming here. 🙂

Super Savings Saturday

I had big plans to hit four stores this week seeing as I sort of took last week “off” from shopping. But by the time I planned to go out and go shopping on Tuesday, the snowed at moved in and the roads were getting quite treacherous. So I stayed home, re-vamped the menu with what I had and we made-do.

We didn’t eat the most balanced diet ever because we kind of had an odd assortment of ingredients on hand, but our bellies were filled and we were thankful to be in a warm house with electricity — something I know many others didn’t have this past week.

Once the roads cleared some, I took Kaitlynn out for a quick shopping trip on Thursday to Dillon’s to purchase the above groceries. You can see the full details on Thursday’s shopping trip as well as a price break-down here.

Other than that, we stayed home most of this week and enjoyed lots of extra reading and snuggling time. My husband even stayed home from work half of one day and we had an at-home afternoon movie date — something we’ve not done for a very long time! It was wonderful to enjoy such a relaxing pace for a few days.

The snow is finally melting so I’m planning to go out to Target, Aldi, Dillon’s and maybe even Walmart and the health food store later this afternoon. In case it snows again this coming week, I figured I had better take advantage of a Saturday afternoon when Jesse’s home to go out and get a bunch of grocery shopping done!

Super Savings Saturday: Dillon’s shopping trip + free fruit!

I planned to do more grocery shopping this week, but it was just one of those weeks where life trumped the plans and a lot of things went undone. So we revised our menu plan a bit and ate from the freezer and pantry.

I did end up stopping by Dillon’s yesterday to get a few deals in their Mega Event:

Dillon’s Shopping Trip:

2.5 dozen eggs — on Manager’s Special for $1.99, used $0.55/2 dozen eggs coupon (no longer available — “doubled” to $1), $0.99 after coupon

2 cans of Hormel Chili — $0.89 when you purchase 10 participating items, used $0.55/2 coupon (“doubled” to $1), $0.39 each after coupons

2 Reach toothbrushes — $1 when you purchase 10 participating items, used $2/2 coupon (no longer available), free after coupon

4 bags of Garden of Eatin’ Chips — $1.79 when you purchase 10 participating items, used $1/1 peelies on bags, $0.79 each after coupon

3 bottles of Honest Tea — $1.25 (these were supposed to be part of the Buy 10 Mega Event, but they weren’t marked as such at our store), used 3 $0.50/1 coupons (doubled to $1), $0.25 each after coupons

1 Excedrin used free coupon

2 rolls of Scotch tape — $1 when you purchase 10 participating items, used $0.55/1 coupon (“doubled” to $1), free after coupons!

Total spent: $9.01

Total saved (according to my receipt): $31.29

My mom also gave me some grapefruit and oranges she got this week. And we bought a gallon of milk at Braum’s.
