If you’re looking for a simple, frugal, and nutritious way to use up some fresh (or frozen) blueberries, this is your recipe! These muffins are packed with flavor, freezer friendly, and delicious!

Guest post from Laura of Life As A Loewen
I love the way blueberry muffins can be eaten for breakfast, snack, or even dessert! This recipe is super-simple, (practically) fool-proof, and makes you the “muffin hero” in less than a half-an-hour!
Even more, I love that this recipe is fairly healthy, using intentional ingredients to make a more nutritious muffin. It’s a great recipe to make when blueberries are on sale!
Ingredients for Blueberry Muffins
- 2 eggs
- ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce
- ¼ cup melted coconut oil
- ¾ cup sugar
- 4 cups whole wheat flour (or all-purpose)
- 6 Tablespoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups milk
- 1 ½ pints of fresh blueberries
NOTE: Use as many or as few blueberries as you like. I love LOTS of blueberries, but make it to your taste.

How to Make Whole Wheat Blueberry Muffins
1. Preheat oven to 400ºF. Grease two 12-cup muffin tins.
2. In a large mixing bowl, combine eggs, applesauce, melted coconut oil, and sugar and mix well.
3. Add a cup of flour, followed by baking powder and salt.
4. Next, alternate adding milk and the remaining three cups of flour, being sure not to overload your mixer while mixing together on a low setting.
5. Fold in the blueberries, taking care to not over-mix as you want to keep the blueberries intact.
6. Soon batter into greased muffin tins, filling each ¾ full.
7. Bake in preheated oven for 18-22 minutes.
8. Enjoy!

Hello, Dallas… and how I save hundreds of dollars on business trips!
Hello, Dallas… and how I save hundreds of dollars on business trips!
The view from my hotel room this evening
I flew into Dallas this afternoon to speak at a conference here tomorrow and Saturday. And as I was going about my day, I thought it’d be fun to share a few tips I’ve picked up on how to save money on business trips.
Note I said business trips. That’s very important.
You see, if you really want to save money, I recommend taking road trips. They are much less expensive than flying anywhere. Plus, you can bring a cooler and your own food. And well, they are usually just so much more economical in so many different ways.
So this post is not written from an ultra-frugal perspective. Because well, business trips in and of themselves don’t tend to be ultra-frugal. And that’s okay. Usually, the value you are providing or receiving in return for the expense paid by your business or another business on your behalf makes it worth the investment.
But I know that many of you do take frequent or occasional business trips, and I thought I’d share a few money-saving tips I employed today that might inspire you or spark an idea to help you save money. Because just these four things combined, save me hundreds of dollars every year.

First off, always bring your own reading material instead of being tempted to buy an overpriced book or magazine from the airport gift shop. In fact, always bring a little more than you think you’ll be able to read. Because this way, if there’s a flight delay or some other delay, it can just become a relaxing reading time, instead of a stressful, twiddle-your-thumbs-with-nothing-to-do time.
I save all the magazines that come in from our five or six current subscriptions in a drawer and then bring a few of them each time I travel. I also bring a few books. Usually a few too many… but hey, if we are stranded somewhere for 12 hours, at least I’ll have plenty of good reading material. 😉

Bring your own tea bags, too. I love hot tea — and it’s so soothing on your throat if you’ve been doing a lot of speaking/talking at events. I usually have a few tea bags in my purse and a few more in my suitcase and then I can make hot tea in the hotel room with the coffee maker or I can ask for hot water on the plane to make my own tea.
Not only is a soothing cup of tea is a great way to unwind at the end of a busy day, but it’s much more convenient and much less expensive when you bring your own tea bags instead of buying a hot drink at the hotel or a nearby restaurant.

When you arrive at your location, if at all possible, find a place nearby to purchase a case of water or even a 6-pack of water bottles (if it’s a short stay). This encourages you to stay hydrated while you’re busy in meetings or at a conference, and it’s also so much cheaper than buying individual water bottles from the hotel or venue where you’re at.
We also often stop by the grocery store and pick up some food for snacks/meals to extend our travel food budget. Not only is this so much less expensive than eating all your meals out or grabbing snacks from the hotel gift shop, but it’s also much more convenient if you’re needing to eat a quick snack (as I often do) to give you stamina before you go on stage or into that three-hour intensive meeting.

The fourth photo I took today was of my beloved suitcase. I bought this suitcase off of Groupon at a steal and it has traveled many, many miles with me and saved me well over a thousand dollars in the last year.
Why? Because it’s roomy and can fit enough stuff in it for up to an 8-day trip. Which means I never pay for baggage fees — which add up very quickly when you usually travel a few times per month!
When I started traveling regularly, I created a “system” of sorts for packing and have pared down to the essentials I need for trips + a few extras. I typically always pack almost the exact same thing every trip.
(Yes, I don’t have that many outfits so I wear the same progression of 2-3 outfits for almost every trip until those outfits wear out or the seasons change! It might seem really boring, but it actually simplifies things so that packing for a business trip usually takes me very little time.)
You can see a peek into my packed-for-an-8-day-trip suitcase here, if you’re interested.
What advice or tips do you have for saving money on business trips and/or while traveling? I’d love to hear so I can get some new ideas to try!
We Paid Cash: Our Escrow Shortage
A testimony from Jill
About a month ago, my husband and I received a letter in the mail that the escrow balance on our rental home was short by $1351. After doing some research, we found that we had been paying taxes only on the land the home was built on and not on the home itself.
We had two months to come up with the money — and we were worried since we just completed an out-of-state move and I recently became a stay-at-home mom.
I started going through our home looking for anything I was willing to sell. I sold purses I no longer used, business supplies and products from a direct sales company I was no longer part of, a coffee table we had no room for, kitchen items I no longer used, a bridesmaid dress from a wedding I was in, and many other items.
After only 1 month, I had enough to pay the bill!
Here is the breakdown of how we saved up enough to pay this bill:
Put items in a garage sale at my parents’ house — $186
Listed items on local Facebook yard sale pages — $762
Carefully reviewed the escrow bill and called the mortgage company. We found that our homeowner’s insurance had been paid twice, and we received a check back from the insurance company for $562.
Not only did we have enough to cover the expenses, but there was money left over!
I am still listing items on the yard sale sites because I have learned that I truly do not need so many of the items I have in my home, and less is more!
Jill is a wife and a stay-at-home mom to her 8-month-old daughter. She loves finding deals, bargain shopping, and working hard to become debt free.

Behind-the-Scenes of My Writing Process
I was honored to be asked to answer a few questions on my writing process by my real-life friend, Ginger. She’s wife to a deployed husband, mom of three boys, and a dear friend of mine.
Ginger and I went to church together when we were just kids. After her family moved on to a different church, we were pen-pals for awhile. And then we completely lost contact for years.
It was only last year that we re-connected via Instagram and met up at the park for a play date. We quickly rekindled and deepened our friendship and have been blessed to stay in close contact since then.
Ginger inspires me through her blog and writing. She’s real, honest, and authentic. And her story is one of much pain and heartache… but also of the beauty that has come out of that darkness.
Here’s a short description from her About Page to get a peek into her life and why she blogs:
I enjoy sharing more of Our Story in chapters here in this blog. In it I tell the story of discovering betrayal and infidelity in my first marriage, and how I battled the storm that followed. I shared my Letter to the Other Woman, how I tried to restore my marriage, and when I knew that it was time to let go. I have also recounted my journey through being a single mom to three little boys, and how my heart healed after all of the pain. Eventually a wonderful man entered my life, and we became a blended family.
We have had our shares of joys and trials, deployments and long seasons apart, and even an unexpected battle with cancer. I began this blog in August 2013 to reach out to others. I wanted to let you know that no matter what nightmare comes your way, or wherever your journey leads, you are not alone. I promise.
If you’re not already following Ginger’s blog, I encourage you to hop on over and check it out. Now, onto the questions on writing she asked me to answer:
What am I working on/writing?
Currently, I’m focusing the majority of my writing time on writing content for my blog. I’ve loved getting back to my roots and sharing more of a peek into our everyday lives.
My other big writing project right now is my next book. We had written up a basic proposal on the topic I really want to write on, but my editor strongly encouraged me to go back to the drawing board and come up with a fresher angle or a new idea.
While that was a bit discouraging, I also am grateful for people who are committed to making this next book the best it can be. Because of this, I value their constructive feedback and suggestions.
So, after a lot of thought, prayer, and discussion with others, we overhauled the proposal and re-submitted it a few weeks ago. I’m now waiting to hear their thoughts on the overhauled proposal.
I’m also supposed to be working on an ebook on cutting your grocery bill… but I’ve kind of shelved that for a bit and plan to pick it back up in August or September. By then, I’m hoping we’re more settled into our new rhythm of life in TN and our busy conference/travel season will be behind us.
How does my writing/work differ from others in its genre?
I have a unique story and unique perspective because I am the only me in existence. I don’t focus on how I can be different from others, but instead I focus on how I can be authentically me.
However, that wasn’t always the case. You see, for a long time, I wanted to be an artistic wordsmith. I wanted to write flowery, picturesque, beautiful pieces. Words that would move people in deep way. I saw others who were doing this so well and wished I had their gift of words.
But then I realized that that wasn’t who God had made me to be. Instead, He’s gifted me with the ability to take big-picture concepts and break them down into practical, bite-sized takeaways.
So I stopped trying to be someone I’m not and started focusing on being true to who I am — sharing my stories and unique perspective in (mostly) practical posts with practical takeaways.
It might not be as beautiful, but it’s just as needed.
Why do I write what I do?
I started writing way back when I was just a few years old. I couldn’t spell, but I’d pretend to write. And then as soon as I knew how to spell, I started writing notes to other people.
For years, I invested a lot of time into writing notes and letters: thank you notes, notes of encouragement, sympathy cards, pen-pal letters (at one time, I had around 50 different pen-pals from all over the country, and some even in other countries!). I loved to write and I loved to encourage others, so writing notes and letters was a way to combine my two loves.
When I was 15, I started a printed newsletter for young girls as an additional outlet for my writing. I ended up cutting off the subscriptions at 200 total because that was all I could realistically print and process with everything else I was doing at the time! (In addition to the newsletter, I taught violin lessons to around 12-15 students, worked part-time as a waitress, and had weekly babysitting gigs with a few different families in my high school years.)
After I got married and was no longer publishing the newsletter or writing to dozens of different pen-pals, I was itching to write regularly again. And once I discovered LiveJournal in 2004 and then blogging in 2005, it was a natural fit.
I’ve written something for my blog almost every single day since I began blogging in 2005. Because I can’t not write. It’s in my bones. In fact, I always say that if you left me on a desert island with nothing, I’d take a stick and write in the mud. 🙂
How does my writing process work?
Um, writing process? You mean I’m supposed to have a process. Ahem. 🙂 Actually, I suppose I have some sort of process, but it’s not really clear-cut or incredibly organized.
I typically plan out what posts I intend to write for the week on each day of the week on my Google calendar. And then I will sometimes jot down ideas for that post the notes section of that all-day task on Google calendar. Or, if I come up with a post outline while I’m washing dishes or driving, I’ll jot it down when I can get to paper and then type it into a post draft the next time I’m at my computer.
So at any given time, I usually have at least a few posts started and a few posts that I’m thinking on and formulating in my brain. (I often map out posts when I’m falling asleep… I love thinking through the organization and flow of a post or speech and find it also helps my brain to shut down quickly at night!)
I have a sort of prioritized list for my blogging time that I mostly follow every morning: Check email, post deals, answer emails, check comments/Facebook, post more deals, pin deals on Pinterest, do any other extra pressing work, and then work on drafting content pieces.
While I could put the content pieces first, I find that I am better at really focusing on them and enjoy writing them more when I’ve cleared off the other pressing tasks for the day. So I get the pressing tasks done first and then typically work on the content pieces either in my afternoon blogging time or (as in the case of this post) sometimes in the evenings after dinner and Family Time. It just depends upon the day and what works best for our family/schedule that day.
When I write content pieces, I try to shut down all other distractions and just fully focus on writing the piece. If it’s a longer piece, I usually break it up into 2-4 20-minute writing blocks. Once it’s written, I usually proof it, add in photos, and add in links.
Want to know w secret? I rarely sit on finished posts. In fact, I typically hit publish as soon as they are ready… unless it’s a very uncommon sort of day when I have a chance to work ahead on a post for the following day.
Someday, I’d love to have posts done and pre-scheduled days or weeks in advance, but I’m just not there right now and I’ve gotten to the place where I’m good with that. After all, I’m a big believer in doing what works for you!
So there’s a little peek into my writing process. If you’re a writer and/or blogger, I’d love to hear your answers to any or all of these questions. Share the answers on your blog or leave them in the comments!

This Week’s ALDI Shopping Trip + Tide Purchase on Amazon

So I told you that we were going to try to mostly eat from the pantry this past week since we’d gone over-budget on groceries the week before. Well, we ended up stretching what we already had on hand to last all of last week. So that means we’re now almost back on track with our budget — yay!
My husband swung by ALDI with a list and got the above items. I forgot to ask him to save the receipt, though, and we’ve been unable to figure out where it went off to (ever have that happen??). The beauty of using cash is that you don’t have to worry so much about exactly how much you spent so long as you stuck with the cash budget.
So I’m not sure on the exact, exact total, but the above shown groceries were just under $49 based upon the cash he spent. He also bought a bag of tortilla chips that I failed to get in the picture.
The tub of Tide Pods was purchased from Amazon using Swagbucks. I’ve not tried these before and splurged on them because I wanted to see how they worked compared to regular detergent.
We also used the 2 FREE Malt-O-Meal coupons to get cereal and the 2 FREE Hillshire Farms coupons to get two tubs of deli turkey. And I failed to get a picture of those, too, before they were opened and partially eaten. Because clearly, I’m super on top of things today. Ahem.

June’s Challenge:
We’re focusing on developing the habit of a better morning routine. I encourage you to create a simple and doable morning routine and to stick with it.
New to this challenge? Read more details on the plan for this year here.
My Morning Routine Challenge for June
I created a new morning routine and am working on sticking with it.
I’m also hoping to keep up with January’s habit of exercising at least 4-5 times every week, February’s goal of eating a big salad at least six times a week, March’s goal of drinking 8 glasses of water a day, April’s goal of cutting back on sugar, and May’s goal of getting at least 7.5 hours of sleep every night.
This Week’s Progress:
So I still have a long way to go when it comes to my morning routine, but I’m encouraged at the progress I’m making. And I have good news to share: I went to bed at 10:15 p.m. last night and got up at 5:15 a.m. this morning.
Yay!! Let’s hope this is the start of new good habits for me. 🙂
I didn’t do that great at getting 7.5 hours of sleep every night last week, but I’m determined to keep working on it! I hit my water goals six of the days, exercised four days, ate a salad five of the days, and had dessert twice.
How Are YOU Doing?

Peek Into Our Week: Tweaking our schedule, dental work, interviews, friendship, and my morning routine
Peek Into Our Week: Tweaking our schedule, dental work, interviews, friendship, and my morning routine
This was a rather hot week as our air conditioner had issues and most days it was 85 to 86 degrees in our house during the heat of the day. It’s amazing how grateful this makes you for working air conditioner. 🙂
We’re still in the process of trying to get it fixed, but we’ve at least figured out where to put fans so that we’re keeping the house at around 81-82 degrees in the heat of the day — which is a big improvement.
Your comments on what temperature you keep your house at were fascinating to me… and sort of made me feel like a wimp that 81 and 82 degrees seems hot! 🙂
Here’s a little run-down of how our week went:
Monday
We started something new this week that seemed to work well. After our morning routine, instead of doing my computer work at our house, Jesse suggested I go to a coffee shop and work for a few hours while he teaches/does things with the kids and then I’d come home and swap with him (i.e. he’d leave and go work at a coffee shop and I’d stay home and teach/do things with the kids).
This seemed to work well and allow both of us to get much more focused work done and also to be much more intentional and focused on the kids during our time with them. We’re going to continue this for this coming week with some tweaks and we’ll see if it becomes a permanent thing for this season or not.
Navigating the waters of having us both working from home is new to us and it’s definitely a learning process. But we’re truly loving how it has simplified our lives and affords us much more together time.
Monday afternoon, I had a radio interview. One of the interviewers also owns Cookie Temptations. Guess what she sent to us later this week? This amazing box of goodies — including personalized cookies for our kids. Not only were the cookies adorable, they are delicious, too!
Monday evening, we had our typical Meaty Monday gathering at friends’ house. There are about 8-10 families who are part of it and whoever can come shows up each week bringing some meat for the grill and a side dish. This week, the guys had fun cheering on the USA Soccer team to victory (Silas has really gotten into the World Cup and it’s been fun to see him tracking all the scores and games. :))
Tuesday
Kaitlynn had another dentist appointment… gratefully she didn’t have to get any teeth pulled this time, but she had to get three fillings. We’ve been blessed to not have to really deal with cavities in our family up to this point, so this is new territory for us.
The dentist said he just thinks Kaitlynn is incredibly prone to cavities so we’re having all three children follow the Zellies Complete Mouth Care System (thanks to a reader for recommending it!) and are hoping that this might help out. We’ve heard great things about it, so we’ll see.
Wednesday
Wednesday morning as I was getting ready, a friend in our neighborhood texted me to tell me she was headed to get coffee and could she bring me some? I told her I was actually headed to the coffee shop to work for a few hours and asked her if she wanted to bring her laptop and hang out with me for a bit. We had such a fun morning getting some work done and getting in some great conversation, too!
I did a little non-oven freezer cooking cooking on Wednesday evening. You can see the results of my freezer cooking here and the recipes I made. My kids have been gobbling up the energy bites and they’ve made a great afternoon snack here — especially straight from the freezer!

I walked into our bedroom on Thursday morning and my heart was so warmed to see Silas and Jesse counting out all the money for our cash envelopes together. Jesse was teaching Silas how to count money and explaining how much money we put into each cash envelopes.
Thursday evening, we got together with our neighbors — the guys hung out on our neighbor’s back porch and the gals hung out at our house. We feel so blessed to be developing such deep and authentic relationships with our neighbors here!
Friday
Friday morning, I filmed a Master Class with Michael Hyatt for Platform University on “Finding Time to Build Your Platform”. It was an honor to get this experience and I’m so grateful for how Michael has inspired me as a blogger, speaker, and leader.
Friday evening, we had what is dubbed Porch Time with our neighbors. This is where a few couples from the neighborhood all gather on the back screened-in porch of one of our neighbors to just hang out and chat. Well, that and eat the yummy food we all bring to share! It is such a blessing to have neighbors to “do life” with here and we’re so honored that they have welcomed us with open arms.
By the way, many of you have asked how we’ve developed such close relationships here already and how we have such great friends. This is an area we’ve learned a lot about and grown in a great deal the past few years. I shared some of my thoughts and the lessons I’ve learned in my posts this week on How to Find Great Friends and How to Find Time to Be a Friend.
Saturday
Today was a quiet and lazy sort of day. Jesse went out to breakfast with a friend in the morning and then he took Kaitlynn out to lunch at Cracker Barrel for her birthday. The rest of us stayed home and worked on some projects, did some cleaning, I took a long nap, and then we had a family movie night tonight.
My Morning & Evening Routines Update
I promised you all I’d give you an update on how I did on getting to bed on time last week. My goal was 11 p.m., and unfortunately, I didn’t do all that great in hitting it. But I did do better than the week before, so that’s progress, right??

Monday morning — up at 6:15 a.m.
Monday night — 11:30 p.m.
Tuesday morning — 7:15 a.m.
Tuesday night — 12:30 a.m.
Wednesday morning — 7 a.m.
Wednesday evening — 10 p.m.

Saturday morning — 6:15 a.m. (I woke up without an alarm… but I knew I needed more sleep, so I took a long nap later on in the day. Yay!)
I’m going to track my bedtime and wake up times this coming week, as well, and am going to shoot for getting to bed by 10:30 p.m. every evening to see if I can do even better. Because I really want to break this bad habit of staying up so late!

My Favorite Ways to Get FREE Product Coupons

Guest post from Emily of The Unextreme
Do you know the BEST way to score free items?
In case you haven’t heard, free product coupons are the new way to shop! I’m talking a 100% savings on full-priced items. The only problem is that they can be hard to come by.
It’s not impossible though and I will let you in on my little secret!
The way that I have earned the majority of my free product coupons has been through playing games. That’s right: I enter and play sweepstakes and giveaways all the time. Many companies offer these free product coupons as prizes.
You may say that you don’t have a lot of time to give to enter sweepstakes everyday. After all, you’re not guaranteed to win. However, it might not take as much time as you think — and you might just be amazed how many freebie product coupons you’ll end up with!
I make time for sweepstakes every day — just like I did when I began couponing. I allot myself 30 minutes in the morning to enter as many as I possibly can before my son wakes up.
There are a few different types of sweepstakes that you can enter online:
- Single entry
- Daily entry
- Instant-win
Consistency is key.
If a giveaway is open for 30 days and allows you to enter every day, make sure to try and enter each and every day to increase your chances of winning!
Some sweepstakes require you to enter once and others allow you to enter daily until the giveaway has ended. Always make sure that you read the contest rules before you enter! Entering multiple times in a “single-entry only” game can eliminate your chances of winning completely!
My favorite sweepstake games are instant-win games. You know the feeling that you get when you save a ton of money at the register, better known as the “coupon high”? That’s the way it feels to win an instant-win game!
If you are interested in some of these games, always remember to “Like” you favorite companies on Facebook! Not only do they often offer coupons on their Facebook pages but some will host giveaways and sweepstakes! A good bit of Facebook sweepstakes are instant-win games. You can find single and daily entry sweepstake promotions on Facebook as well.
Another great way to find free product coupons is by emailing your favorite companies. I have been sent numerous free product coupons as a “thank you” for telling them how much I enjoy their product. Companies love to hear how much you love them.
Finally, always check your coupon inserts from the Sunday paper! They are not common but some companies will offer a 100% rebate on the purchase price of one of their items. Although it’s not a coupon to receive it for free at the register, it will be free once you are reimbursed for the product. Free is free, right?
What are your favorite ways to find freebie coupons?

How do you find time to be a friend?

Did you read Tuesday night’s post about How to Find Good Friends? If you missed it, be sure to read it and check out all the amazing comments on it. I learn so much and am so inspired by you all!
One question that people have asked me over and over again after reading that post is: How do you find time to be a friend?
The bottom line is this: I make time because it’s important.
I’m a much healthier, whole, balanced, and cheerful person when I take time to invest in friends. So I make it a priority.
Now, here’s the thing: you can run yourself ragged with social engagements and opportunities and saying “yes” to everyone and everything. That’s not what I’m advocating.
What I am encouraging is that you be intentional to develop a few good, deep, authentic relationships. These will take time and effort, but they will be so very worth it! In fact, I find that — even though I’m more of an introvert — I’m refreshed and encouraged by making friendship a priority.
We need to know that we’re not in this alone. Spending time with others who “get us” and can encourage and build us up will do wonders for our energy levels and motivation.

We need friends who will lift us up when we are down. Who will laugh with us, listen to us, pray with us, and cry with us. And it’s not only life-giving to have friends to do this for us, it’s also such a blessing to be able to do be this kind of friend for others, too!
One thing I did last year was to make a list of what I call my “inner circle” — these are people who incredibly life-giving, truth-telling, and who have gone the distance with me, people who clearly love me for exactly I am and are very committed to our friendship.
I have a lot of friends that I love to hang out with occasionally, but I only have capacity to “go deep” with small number of people. So writing down names on my Inner Circle list really helped me in being intentional in friendships and to solidify in my mind the people that I was committing to be ALL IN with.

By this, I mean people who I will drop everything for, people who I will go out of my way to spend time with, people who I try to spend time with in some way, shape, or form on a weekly basis if at all possible, people I will make every effort to make time to connect with… even if it means business stuff or laundry (or even sleep!) suffers as a result.
This might seem like it would take a lot of time and work — and it does! But here’s the thing: I’ve found that I have so much more energy and zest for life when I make time to connect with people at a deep level at least a few times per week.
This, in turn, fuels my encouragement and my productivity. Time with friends is worth the effort because it keeps me from feeling drained, tired, and discouraged! It’s kind of like a miracle drug, of sorts. On those days when I’m feeling down, calling a friend or spending an hour with a friend can give me just the boost I need to get back up and get going again.

Practical & Simple Ways to Foster Friendship
There will be times when you’ll need to drop everything in order to be there for a friend who is going through a traumatic time, but on a daily basis, maintaining great friendships doesn’t have to take hours and hours of time.
Here are some ideas of ways to foster friendship when you don’t have a lot of extra time:
Text Short Messages — I typically text at least 3-5 friends everyday to just let them know I’m thinking of them and praying for them. This doesn’t take a lot of time, but can mean a lot. Truthfully, I often do this while I’m on the treadmill or waiting in line. I figure I might as well use that time productively to bless someone else!
Invite Your Friend to Join You in Something You’re Already Doing — Headed to the park or the pool with your kids? Ask a friend or two to come join you. Your kids can get some great exercise and have fun while you have meaningful conversation.
Just a few days ago, a friend who lives in my neighborhood texted me to say she was headed to get some coffee and she wondered if she could bring me a coffee, too. I was actually headed to a nearby coffee shop to work for a few hours so I asked her if she wanted to bring her laptop and hang out and work with me. We both were about to get work done and we also got in some great conversation, too!
Write a Quick Email — I often will shoot a quick email to someone to just let them know they are on my heart or to ask how they are doing. Or, if I’ve just spent time praying for them, I’ll let them know that I just prayed for them and what I specifically prayed. This can literally take two minutes to do, but can mean a LOT.
Work on a Project Together — If you have a cleaning, organizing, or cooking project you’re working on, ask a friend to join you and help out. And then make sure to return the favor to them later. 🙂 This can make the time fly, creates fun memories, and will probably mean the project gets done more efficiently.
Talk on the Phone While Cleaning — If you and a friend both have a cleaning project to work on, call each other up and chat while you work on your projects. This doesn’t work for all types of projects, but can work well if you’re scrubbing a bathroom, picking up, sorting, or other similar projects.
Engage on Social Media — Okay, so I know that many people feel like there’s no depth on social media, but I disagree. I love to keep up with my close friends on social media — leaving comments and encouragement and letting them know I care about what goes on in their life. Plus, I’ve found that it’s a great way to be able to have a starting point for conversations when I see them in person — because I have a little peek into what has gone on in their life recently through their posts on social media.
Send a Handwritten Note — The opposite of social media, handwritten notes are almost a lost art. I encourage you to take a little time to write a handwritten note. Whether a thank you note, a birthday note, or even just a “thinking of you” note, getting mail can brighten someone’s day and let them know how much you care.
Really Listen — When you are with your friend, take time to really listen to them — even if you only have a few minutes. Looking in their eyes, asking good questions, and focusing completely on them communicates so much and can really mean the world to someone.
Ask Good Questions — In addition to listening, take time to ask questions. Real questions. Not the “how are you and how’s the weather” kind of questions. But the kind of questions that cause people to be real and honest with where they are at.
For instance, just recently, I was with a friend and I asked how they were doing. When they responded “okay”, I looked at them and said, “You’re not doing well, are you? What’s going on?” This let them know that I really cared and really wanted to know how they were and gave them permission to share a hard struggle they were going through.
Express Appreciation — You can never be too thankful. Tell people often how much you appreciate them and specific ways you appreciate them. Don’t take anyone for granted. Don’t wait to tell someone how they’ve impacted your life. You might not have the opportunity if you don’t take it today.
