Q&A: Will I get a bunch of spam emails if I sign up for freebies?

Hey there, I was wondering if you see a jump in unsolicited spam-type emails and calls once you start responding to these offers and freebies? -Lisa

Great question, Lisa! And I think it’s one that a lot of people have.

Here are some of my thoughts:

1. Set Up a Separate Free Email Account

First off, you will get emails from companies that you sign up for offers and deals with. The main reason they are usually offering a freebie or coupon is so they’ll get your email address.

To prevent your main inbox from becoming overrun with offers and company emails, set up a separate email account to use for freebies and coupons. This is simple to do and will save you from dealing with a lot of spam or unwanted email in your main account.

2. Don’t Sign Up for Shady Freebies

If it sounds too good to be true, it often is. I try my best to vet deals before posting them, but occasionally something will slip past me.

Always check a site out if something looks off. Is it hosted on the main company’s site? Does the Facebook Page have a lot of entries and likes (there are a lot of scam Facebook Pages)? Is the offer mentioned on the company’s website or Facebook Page?

Some tell-tale signs of possible scams are:

Blatant typos on a page
A high-value freebie that’s hosted on a non-company site
A bunch of hoops you have to jump through to get the freebie
A site offering a free product that doesn’t tell you where you can actually buy the product (no shopping cart on the site and no links to where you can purchase it)
A freebie advertised for a product that doesn’t seem to be available anywhere.

These aren’t always scams, but these are things I look for when deciding whether something is legit or not.

If you’re not 100% sure that an offer is legit, don’t sign up for it.

3. Don’t Give Out Your Phone Number

Unless you’re comfortable with it, don’t give out your phone number. Spam emails are not fun, but sales calls and texts are even much more disruptive in my opinion. Just skip offers that require a phone number and save yourself the headache!

Ask The Readers: What do you do with food nobody likes?

Today’s question is from Jessica:

What do you do when you try a new recipe and nobody likes it? Do you eat it until it’s gone anyway, and just don’t make it again? Do you throw it out after tasting a few bites? Offer it to someone else?

As far as I know, food pantries don’t accept home-cooked foods, and we don’t have nearby family to pass things to, either. In the past month, I had to toss a pan full of side pork we didn’t like, and a sheet full of pumpkin granola nobody liked.

I usually try 2-3 new recipes each month, and at least one of them is usually a dud, despite my best efforts to find recipes that only include ingredients that we like. After a while, tossing out all that food can be costly. So what to do? -Jessica

52 Different Ways to Save at Least $100 Per Year: Is this really a good deal? {Week 32}

Every week in 2013, I’ll be sharing a different way you can save $100 this year. If you do all of these things, you’ll be able to save over $5,000 this year alone! Many of these things will likely be things you’re already doing, but hopefully all of you will pick up at least a few new ideas or some inspiration from this series.

This week’s tip is so simple, but it can be extremely effective in helping you save at least $100 per year, if not more.

Before purchasing anything, ask yourself: Is this really a good deal? As I’ve often said, just because something is a great bargain, it doesn’t mean it’s a great deal for you.

Here are four questions to help you think through whether a purchase is a good deal for you:

1. Can I afford this?

If you can’t afford to buy something, it’s not a good deal — no matter how low the price. Period. You don’t need to go onto questions two, three, and four as you’ve already answered the question: don’t buy whatever it is you’re contemplating because you don’t have the money for it.

If it’s something you really want or need, wait and find a way to save extra money to pay for it. I promise it will be much more fulfilling to pay cash in full for something then to have to deal with a credit card bill that you can’t pay down the road.

2. Do I need this?

If your budget is really tight, train yourself to think in terms of need not want. This doesn’t mean, “Will this make my life easier?” Or, “Will this make me happy?” We’re thinking solely in terms of the question, “Can I live without this?” In most cases, you can probably live without the item.

This doesn’t mean you should never buy an item unless it’s an absolute necessity, but it does mean you should be aware of whether or not you can live without something when you’re contemplating whether something is a good deal.

3. Can I get a better deal elsewhere?

In many, many cases, there’s a way to find a better deal. Be it by buying used, asking for a discount, ordering online with a discount code, or waiting for a better sale.

Do your research and don’t just fall for a supposed great deal unless you know it truly is a great deal.

4. Can I use something I already have?

Instead of going out and shopping for new clothes, go through your closet and see what new outfit combinations you can come up with. Instead of buying a new appliance, see if you can fix your old one. Instead of purchasing a new couch, investigate the possibility of re-upholstering the one you already have.

See if there’s a way to make do with what you already have before rushing off to purchase that “great deal”. It’s almost always less expensive to use what you already have than to buy something new.

Less Judgment, More Acceptance

Less Judgment

If you’ve been reading my blogs since the beginning (way back before MoneySavingMom.com even existed!), you know I started out as a very black & white, judgmental blogger. I was in my early twenties and I thought I had all of life pretty well figured out.

Oh how I shudder to think of some of the downright harsh things I posted in the early days of blogging! (If I offended you by my dogmatic attitude, would you please email me so I can personally ask forgiveness?)

And it wasn’t just in my blogging. My egotistical, always-right viewpoint across the board offended people, hurt people, and ruined a lot of would-be relationships.

God had to pull the rug from under me and bring me to a place of complete brokenness before I discovered this amazing thing called grace and compassion. It’s been a journey… hard at times, but overall so beautiful. The more I walk this path, the more I learn — and the more I realize how much I don’t know!

More Acceptance

Once I stopped pointing fingers and started offering a helping hand, I realized that the people I’d once criticized weren’t anything like I thought they were. In fact, I’ve learned so much about grace, love, and life from people whom I once upon a time wouldn’t associate with.

I’m also learning that heated words condemning another person’s choices don’t usually solve anything. Loving and listening to a person with a heart full of compassion and care… now that’s the way to make an impact. It’s much more powerful that the loudest, sharpest words ever will be.

Less Anxiety, More Rest

Less Anxiety

Life is full of struggles and difficulties. In fact, probably for most of us, rarely a day goes by that we do not have something (or many somethings!) to be stressed about.

However, more and more I’ve been realizing that John G. Miller is right: “Stress is a choice.” You can’t always choose your circumstances, but you can always choose your response to those circumstances.

When hard things come, you can either become uptight and anxious, or you can choose to be calm and cheerful. Sitting and stewing never accomplishes anything good, so you might as well opt to look for the silver lining and choose gratitude instead.

No matter what you’re going through, there is always something to be thankful for. No matter how hard your situation, it could always be worse. So make a choice to rejoice!

More Rest

In the past few years, I’ve become a big advocate for rest. Not only having margin and white space in our schedules, but also just plain getting more sleep.

Burning the candle at both ends doesn’t make you superwoman; it makes you exhausted. I learned this lesson the hard way in the first six years of our marriage. As a result, I’ve now made sleep a high priority in my life. And I’ve learned that I actually get a lot more done when I’m well rested, plus I feel a lot calmer about life in general.

So I’ve been trying to go to be earlier and, on the nights when I don’t go to bed early, I let myself sleep in a little. It makes such a difference in my productivity — and in my overall demeanor.

Here’s what I wrote about sleep in my 15 Ways to Have More Energy post:

I know, I know. It’s hard to get sleep when you have a hundred other things you feel you should be doing.

However, if you don’t take the time to rest, you’ll constantly be running on fumes. Rearrange your schedule, turn off the electronics, do relaxing things before bed, go to bed early (if at all possible), take a 30-minute nap in the afternoon, or do whatever else it takes to make sure you are getting good sleep at least 5-6 nights each week (I’ve found that if I sleep well at least five nights each week, I’m rested enough that I can have a late night once or twice a week without it really affecting me!)

Don’t know whether you’re getting adequate sleep? I’ve heard that a good barometer is to see if you’re tired at all midday or afternoon. If you are, you aren’t getting enough sleep at night. Keep extending your sleep at night by 15 to 30 minutes until you no longer feel tired in the afternoon.

Swagbucks Helped Us Stock Up On Diapers

I was so pumped after getting back from CVS the other day! I stocked up on some much needed items and spent almost nothing thanks to Swagbucks and a tip I got on MoneySavingMom.com.

I had created quite the little stockpile of toiletries and necessities from CVS and Walgreens when I was really couponing a few years back. But when we had our first little one (and then another one quickly thereafter) I got out of my couponing groove and before I knew it, our stash was running low.

The day finally came and here’s what we did:

Purchased 1 Colgate Total mouthwash, 1 Colgate Total toothpaste and 1 stress relieving gum.
Used $2 coupon on mouthwash and $1 coupon on toothpaste
Spent $9.25 of my giftcard (balance $15.75)
Got back $3 ECB and $5.79 ECB

Then on a separate transaction we purchased 5 packs of Luvs diapers
Used 4/$1 coupons (we couldn’t get another computer and printer to print the 5th)
Used the ECBs from the first transaction.
Spent the remaining $15.75 on the gift card and $9.21 out of pocket
Got back $10 ECB

So after both transactions, I only ended up spending $9.21 out of pocket and got $10 ECB back!

I’m so excited to have lots of diapers for our little ladies, a couple things we needed for us, AND a “starter” ECB fund again!

Freezer Cooking in an Hour: Slow Cooker Pumpkin Butter, Freezer-Friendly Pizza Dough, Banana Oatmeal Cups, and Iced Pumpkin Coffee Cake

I was really excited about trying three new recipes for this week’s Freezer Cooking in an Hour session. Sadly, none of them turned out as great as I was hoping. 🙁 But none were disasters, so I guess that’s something to be thankful for. 🙂

The Slow Cooker Pumpkin Butter was really easy to make. It turned out a little more syrupy than I was hoping it would. I’m thinking if I try it again, I’ll add more pumpkin as I think that would fix the issue. (Psst! If you’re looking for a great Crockpot Apple Butter recipe, you must try this one.)

The Iced Pumpkin Coffee Cake turned out decently. The topping was yummy, but I thought the cake wasn’t sweet enough — or just wasn’t the best pumpkin coffee cake I’ve tried. I think it may have been that the recipe didn’t call for eggs and that made the texture a little different than I was expecting.

And the Banana Oatmeal Cups were okay. Not out of this world, but definitely edible.

Last but not least, I made a batch of my favorite Freezer-Friendly Pizza Dough. If you’ve not tried this recipe before, I can’t recommend it highly enough. In fact, you just might give up ever ordering pizza after you see how easy it is to make it yourself!

Dillon’s Shopping Trip: Spent $13.40

My mom took me out to lunch on Friday and we ran into Dillon’s on the way home (mostly because my friend, Angie, had texted me and told me I must stop by Dillon’s and check out some of their deals this week).

We were both so glad we did! Here’s what I got:

2 bags of Ocean Spray Trail Mix — marked down to $0.79 each
1 Pineapple — $0.99
1 Feta cheese — $0.99
1 package of bacon — $3.49
14 tubs of Greek yogurt — $0.39 each
Total with tax: $13.40 (my receipt says I saved $17.96!)

Less Comparison, More Confidence

Less Comparison

Not too long ago, I had a little extra time one day and was perusing blogs. I somehow stumbled upon this beautiful blog written by an even more beautiful woman.

As I read her posts, I began to feel very inadequate. She was pretty, in shape, creative, witty, had a gorgeous home, had more children than me, and really seemed to have it altogether.

I started to feel ugly, disorganized, out of shape, and like a really pathetic woman in comparison to her. But I kept on reading–and continued to feel even worse.

Then I landed upon a post where she talked about this woman that she so admired and wanted to be like. I was shocked when I clicked on the link and discovered the woman she was referring to was me.

Yes, this woman whom I felt I paled in comparison to wanted to be like me.

And then I realized how silly this was. Here she wanted to be me and I was secretly wishing I were her.

It hit me anew just how easy it is to want what we don’t have–better hair, better decorating skills, a better personality, more creativity, more spunk… there’s always someone who it seems we’d like to trade places with because they have what we want.

But trading places with someone wouldn’t fix anything; we’d just inherit a new set of things we wish we could change. No one has it altogether. Everyone has struggles and difficulties. Comparison only leads to discontentment.

More Confidence

We can’t change who we are, but we can make the most of our situation. We can’t choose the personality we are born with, but we can choose to be thankful–even in the midst of difficulty.

And we can choose to be intentional and purposeful in how we live our lives so that we make the most of all that we’ve been given instead of wishing we were someone else.

I loved this part of Amy Lynn Andrew’s post on The Trouble With Blogging:

…Never forget that what you see on the screen is not the whole picture.

Never forget that the people behind the blogs are, well, people…with unorganized cupboards, unmanaged time schedules (ahem!), cranky children (ahem again!), painful stories, crafty train wrecks, struggling marriages, unpaid bills and burnt meat loaf. (Those are the examples I use, because those have all been me behind the scenes.)

Never forget that their story and their journey and their choices apply to them, not to you.

You are who you are for a reason. You are where you are a for a reason. Don’t do what I do and beat yourself up for not being where someone else is. It’s a colossal waste of time.

Appreciate everyone else’s outside, but embrace your inside. (Read the full post here–it’s fantastic!)
