I used to do a weekly post with a peek into the past week + lots of links. Many of you have missed this, so I’m bringing it back for 2026! I’ll be sharing some pictures and highlights from the past week + what I’m reading, watching, and listening to. I will also share links to posts or other interesting things I don’t want you to miss.

Jesse and I kicked off the new year with going to my favorite class at the gym together for the first time! (Can you spot David in this picture??)

I’m loving getting back into sourdough after taking a bit of time off for the holidays!

I finished this She Reads Truth study today! I love the She Reads Truth studies and used them all last year for my morning Bible Time. I’m planning to do the same this year!

This was my Friday project — something that desperately needed to be done! Our closet in our bedroom (that we’ve been sharing with all three younger kids, too) had gotten out of control over December. It was time to whip it into shape and deep clean it (something I’d been meaning to do for months!)

It took 3 hours, but it felt SO good when it was done. I moved a bunch of stuff upstairs to Kierstyn and Micah’s new room and closet (they are moving up to Kathrynne’s old room!) and some items to our attic storage. Every time I walk into the closet, I feel so happy!! I’m hoping to slowly work through the whole house this year and set up better systems that are maintainable. (Also, a few people on Facebook told me the carpet was disgusting. It definitely needs to be cleaned, but it’s also taken a huge beating the last five years with us using this closet for us + 4 little kids, so I think it likely is past being able to look really clean again!)
Guess who got her ears pierced?? See a video of her experience here.

Kaitlynn helped Kierstyn and Micah make homemade slime — something Kaitlynn used to love to make! Here’s her favorite recipe.

I made a BIG batch of roasted veggies for salads and to serve with eggs at breakfast! I used parsnips, butternut squash, onions, sweet potatoes, carrots, and potatoes.
This vulnerable video on why I sized up in jeans was our most-watched Instagram post of the week. I hope it encourages you — it’s about a lot more than the size of your jeans! Watch it here.

Advent – Book #1 finished in 2026! I loved this one by Sherri Gragg! We have a podcast episode coming on Tuesday that I think you are going to love! She brought the Christmas story to light in ways I’d never thought of by sharing so much of the historical and cultural content.
Words Like Honey: How to Avoid Unintentional Harm, Model Kindness, and Nurture Your Child’s Faith Through What You Say – I was so challenged by how little phrases we say – even well-meaningly – could cause harm to our kids. I didn’t agree with everything in the book, but thought it was a very worthwhile read! Listen to the podcast I did with the author here.
The Wilds – I really enjoyed all three books in this series! This one engaged me and I had no idea how it was going to end up until well into the book. However, I didn’t love the ending – it felt like it fell flat compared to the rest of the book. That said, this series is overall very clean. It has some language and deals with adult themes but did it in a way that I felt wasn’t super graphic. They are murder mysteries, though, so you might disagree with me on that!

Breath as Prayer: Calm Your Anxiety, Focus Your Mind, and Renew Your Soul – I got this as a free download on Libby and it has been really encouraging. If you struggle to slow down, to release your burdens to the Lord, or struggle with worry or anxious thoughts, I think this book would encourage you.
We watched RIO, Night at the Museum, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb with the younger kids this week since they were off for Christmas break. We enjoyed them all and would recommend them.
I’m also watching When Calls the Heart during some of my afternoon work time that I can easily do something else while working. I am maybe going to try to watch all 13 seasons this year since I find it to be kind of a fun and engaging “background show” — the kind you can have on in the background while you do something else.

The 43 Books I Read in 2025 – I finished 43 books in 2025. I have been keeping all of the books on a shelf and it’s been fun to watch them accumulate over the year! See the full list here.
My Top 4 Favorite Reads From 2025 – As I looked through all the books I read in 2025, these four books stood out to me most as ones that impacted me They challenged me, encouraged me, and were the ones I kept coming back to in conversation and recommendations. I share more why I chose each one in the reviews below.
How to Create a Budget Spreadsheet (Using Our Free Download!) – Making a budget doesn’t have to be overwhelming — this step-by-step guide will show you exactly how to take control of your money, plus I’ll show you how to create a budget spreadsheet with a free download to make it easy.
25 Things I’m So Glad I Said Yes to in 2025 – Over the past few weeks, I spent some time reflecting on decisions and choices I made in 2025 that I’m so happy I did! I came up with a list of 25 things I said yes to that ended up being impactful decisions that I look back on the year and realize made a positive difference.
How I Found Food Freedom This Year! – In the summer of 2025, I made a decision that I honestly didn’t expect to have such a big impact. I signed up to meet with a Nourish dietitian because it was covered by insurance! I had no idea how much it was going to change my life!
Why I’m Not Setting Any Goals This Year – Over the past few weeks, I keep getting messages from people saying, “I can’t wait to see your goals list for 2026! It’s one of my favorite things you post!” And I had to sort of chuckle and then also realize that I’m possibly going to shock some people with a decision I made in November with the encouragement of my husband and my business coach: I’m not setting any goals for 2026!

Trying to rein in your budget for 2026? Check out these budgeting mistakes to avoid!

The following is a guest post by Jessi Fearon:
I seriously can’t believe that it’s already 2026. But here we are! Chances are you’ve probably created a whole bunch of goals for this year, and maybe you’re already chipping away at them. That’s fantastic!
But I also know, as I’m sure you do as well, that keeping the New Year Resolution energy going all throughout the year is very difficult. After all, we don’t know all that life is going to throw at us this year. We could be faced with unforeseen heartaches, immeasurable joy, or even a combination of the two.
And since many of us (me included) set financial goals for the New Year, I thought I’d share a few mistakes that I see all the time in my coaching clients and ones I’ve made many times before.
If you want to stick to your financial goals this year, watch out for these budgeting mistakes as the year rolls on!
Yes, I know this one is tedious and will not always be fun, but I cannot emphasize enough just how powerful tracking your daily expenses is!
This is a must if you want to rein in overspending! Nothing forces you to become more aware of your spending and where your money is going like having to track each one of your expenses. I have a budget planner from Erin Condren to track ours, but you could use anything — a sheet of paper, the notes app in your phone, or a spreadsheet.
I’m a huge fan of manually tracking (i.e., not relying on an app to do it for me) because, in our digitized world, we have become very disconnected from our money. Many of us don’t even write paper checks to pay our bills anymore — we do it all online! So there’s a bit of a disconnect between our bank accounts and our brains. The best way to fix that is to track our spending manually.

Get our FREE Budget Goal Planning worksheets!
I get it — they’re unexpected! How could you possibly foresee an unexpected expense?! But are they really that unexpected? 🤔 Here’s the thing: if you drive a car, there will be maintenance expenses that you must pay throughout the year if you expect to keep that car running long-term. I mean, the oil isn’t going to change itself! (I drive a 23-year-old vehicle, so trust me, I know firsthand how important it is to keep up with regular maintenance to ensure the longevity of your vehicle.)
Same with Christmas — if you found yourself unprepared for Christmas just a month ago, guess what? It’s time to prepare NOW for Christmas so you don’t find yourself in that predicament again this year.
If you own a home, you should keep up with regular maintenance to ensure that you avoid any major expenses. After all, maintenance of our cars and homes (just like our bodies) prevents bigger emergencies from happening later.
Those expenses really shouldn’t be unexpected. They’re the price of ownership. It’s the same with kids and pets. If you have pets, you know they will need to go to the vet at least once a year to get their shots, and they’ll need flea and tick meds and food. With kids, you know that there’s bound to be a birthday party or two, and there more than likely will be field trips, sports, piano lessons, or any other number of things that come up.
What’s the solution? Sinking Funds. You don’t need to set up a Sinking Fund for everything right now. But I suggest making a list of all the expenses that typically derail your plans (like car maintenance, kid-related stuff, Christmas, vacations, etc.) and then ordering them by priority. For instance, I would suggest prioritizing car or home maintenance over saving for a vacation.
Set a threshold amount — the minimum amount you want saved in that account. It can be whatever number you’d like, but I suggest at least $1,000 for home or car maintenance. Even if that doesn’t cover the total cost, it will help offset it. Then, once you’ve reached your threshold limit, stop contributing to that Sinking Fund and move on to the next one on your list.
Okay, I know that this is a strange one to put last, but this is the one that usually overwhelms folks the most. You NEED an Emergency Fund — non-negotiable. Seriously, it’s a need. Your Starter Emergency Fund should be at least one month’s worth of living expenses. Your Emergency Fund is your safety net for when life tips you upside down. Folks always ask me how to pay for car repairs that cost more than what’s in the car maintenance sinking fund. The answer is your Emergency Fund — that’s what it’s there for. It’s not there to pay for your oil changes. It’s there to pay for the transmission that suddenly went out.
Your Emergency Fund will keep you afloat when things get tough, so take it seriously and prioritize saving an Emergency Fund this year. (You can take a baby step to get started with our $100 Savings Challenge!)
These are just the common budgeting mistakes that I see (and that I’m guilty of myself!), and I believe that if you work at only these three things this year, you’ll end 2026 in a financially better spot than where you began!

Over the past few weeks, I keep getting messages from people saying, “I can’t wait to see your goals list for 2026! It’s one of my favorite things you post!”
And I had to sort of chuckle and then also realize that I’m possibly going to shock some people with a decision I made in November with the encouragement of my husband and my business coach: I’m not setting any goals for 2026!
I know! It’s not like me at all.

In fact, as I was reflecting on goal-setting, I realized that I likely started setting goals when I was 11 years old. The thought of a fresh start to a new year… it was thrilling to me. And — being the overly ambitious person that I am! — I would whip out a clean sheet of paper and make a long list of big audacious goals.
I loved the fresh start. The clean slate. The chance to dream big dreams. And set BIG goals.

The problem was, over time, those goals didn’t serve me; they started to enslave me. Like, I felt like I needed to try to hit them and I’d often feel really discouraged or down on myself if I didn’t.
The other thing I didn’t often do with goal-setting was to really consider the season of life I was in. I would just get so excited about all the things I wanted to do and aim for that I’d make these huge goals for myself without counting the costs… as in, how much time do I realistically have to accomplish extra things this coming year?
I also wouldn’t factor in interruptions or the unexpected. No, I was just focused on all the things I wanted to do or felt like I should do. I tried setting only weekly or monthly goals instead of yearly goals, and that worked better, but I still found I was pushing myself really hard (too hard!) to try to meet the goals.

As I’ve talked about on here, I started working with a dietitian midway through 2025. She ended up changing my life and helping me to see so many dysfunctional beliefs and patterns I had in my life. One of those was pushing through instead of paying attention to my body’s cues for things like hunger and sleep.
Slowly, as I started to begin noticing my body’s cues for things like food and rest, I realized how I had really neglected my health and myself — especially the past five years as there’s been so much going on in our lives.
Motivated by this, I found a functional medicine doctor to help me become healthier. She really challenged me that I wasn’t taking care of myself and that my bloodwork and health were showing significant signs of this. She told me that I might feel okay now, but if I continue on in the pattern I’m in, my body is going to start falling apart in 15 years.

This was a true wakeup call for me. I started looking at ways I could scale back my responsibilities and commitments to allow for more down time, more rest, more time to recharge, more sleep, and less go-go-go in my life.
I began tracking how much hours I was working each week and was shocked to discover I was almost always working at least 50-60 hours (sometimes more!) I love what I do but no wonder my body was not loving my pace of life.
As I considered what it would mean for me to really pare down to only working 40 hours a week and to start having a lot more breathing room and space in my life, I knew the only way to do this would be to say no to a whole lot of things and to stop pushing myself to achieve ambitious things for a season.

I am in the process of untethering myself from finding my value in my work and accomplishments. I had no idea how addicted I was to work and busyness and doing.
It’s been scary and weird to have wide open spaces in my day and life. To go into 2026 without a big list of ambitious goals. Other than knowing I’m launching a new book in the fall and running the business and taking care of my family, my marriage, and myself, I don’t have any big things I’m chasing after, pursuing, or building.
It feels unsettling and quiet. And also, exactly where I’m supposed to be. I feel like I am going to learn and grow so much this year and it’s going to be so healing for me in many, many ways. I’m excited to see what the next 12 months hold!
Want to hear more about this change? Jesse and I recorded a podcast where I share more in-depth on Why I’m Not Setting Goals This Year. Listen to it here.

Do I think goals are bad or wrong? Absolutely not. They just aren’t serving me well in the season I am in. If you are in a season where goals are motivating and exhilarating and healthy, please set them! And I will be here cheering you on!
I have a feeling that this not-setting-goals thing is just a season and I will likely be back to setting goals after this year. But I’m not thinking of that right now. For now, I’m just soaking up the lessons I need to learn right now in this quieter season.
If you have thoughts, feedback, or questions, I’d love to hear!
