Super Savings Saturday

I didn’t do a lot of grocery shopping or couponing the first three weeks in March because I somehow ended up with three trips scheduled those first three and a half weeks. {I enjoy traveling, on occasion, and I love the opportunity to get to speak and meet some of you, but I’ve decided that three trips in three weeks is definitely not something I want to make a habit of! I much prefer quiet days at home with my family! :) }

However, I think I made up for my lack of grocery shopping and couponing this week. Here are the groceries we purchased:

My husband’s shopping trip at Dillon’s that ended up being pretty “screwed up” thanks to both of us miscalculating and misreading ads – Spent $34.97 — Read the full details and price breakdowns here.

Health food store shopping trip — 7 pounds of fruit for $0.99/lb.

Target shopping trip — Spent $38.01 (most of that wasn’t grocery money, though, since the games came out of our household envelope and the girls paid for the Hello Kitty house) — See the full details and price breakdowns here.

Dillon’s shopping trip #2 — Spent $1.26 — Read the full details and price breakdowns here.

Walmart shopping trip — Spent $1.17 — Read the full details and price breakdowns here.

Dillon’s shopping trip #2 — Spent $5.16 — Read the full details and price breakdowns here.

Aldi shopping trip — Spent $15.19 — Read the full details and price breakdowns here.

Didn’t You Waste a Lot of Time and Gas Making All Of Those Trips?

I’m sure that some of you are wondering why I made all these little shopping trips and thinking that I could have saved myself a lot of trouble, time, and gas money if I would have just gone to one store.

Well, yes, I definitely did do more shopping trips than I usually do this week. However, all of the stores were either on my way to somewhere else I was headed or they are really close to my house. I also had extra time this week since we didn’t have that much planned outside of the usual homeschooling and household life.

And finally, it was so nice to be able to just have fun shopping and getting bargains again, after taking a few weeks “off” from it. Yes, I know, I’m crazy that I consider grocery shopping a leisurely activity! :)

Here were the groceries we bought this week:

We spent $21.76 to buy the above groceries at the health food store and Aldi. See the full price breakdown here.

Then, we stopped by a new health food store in town (Natural Grocers) on our date night to check it out. I wasn’t impressed with the prices, but we did get a free bag of almonds thanks to a coupon a kind friend had shared with us that she wasn’t going to use.

We also bought three dozen eggs from my brother for $6.

And last, but not at all least, we stopped by Braum’s today to get a half gallon of ice cream and cones as a special treat for those in our family who can have dairy. (I made a fantastic non-dairy dessert with coconut whipped “cream” for the non-dairy eater–I’ll share the non-dairy whipped cream recipe next week. It’s a keeper!)

I went to Dillon’s earlier this week and bought all of the above for $10.40. See the full details and coupon match-ups here.

And then Jesse took the leftover grocery cash for January and did a big produce stock-up.

This week, I got back in the saddle a little bit when it comes to grocery shopping–and it felt good to be using coupons and shopping at more than one store again! It was nice to take a break for Christmas and the book launch, but I’ve missed it!

Super Savings Saturday: 25 pounds of wheat!

by Crystal on September 24, 2011

Some friends were heading to the bulk foods stores and graciously picked up 25 pounds of wheat for me while they were there. I’m so thankful to have wheat to grind again. I bought one bag of whole-wheat flour recently and we noticed that none of our baked goods tasted as good with it. Freshly-ground whole-wheat flour just can’t be beat!

The wheat was a little over $19 for 25 pounds. It’s less expensive from Azure Standard, but they were all out of wheat when the truck came last month. I’m planning to order a 50-pound bag from Azure soon. In the mean time, I’m just happy to have wheat to grind again!

My mom also gave me some Lundberg Brown Rice that she got clearanced and we bought some basics at Aldi again this week: bread, peanut butter, fruit, vegetables, and cheese. Plus, we also bought some farm-fresh eggs from my brother.

I didn’t do any grocery shopping at all this week. We had plenty on hand in the freezer, refrigerator, and pantry to tide us over until this coming week (you can see what we ate this week here).

Instead, I saved my grocery money to put towards my very first Azure Standard order. I’m so excited about ordering some more food in bulk and can’t wait for my order to come in next week. (And yes, I promise I’ll post pictures and show you what I got when it comes in!)

I think I may have set some sort of record in my grocery shopping today. I went to six stores–which is very out of character since I rarely go to more than three at a time! However, I only had a short to-do list today and I got it done right after lunch. So my husband sent me out to go shopping on my own and told me to just take my time and enjoy myself. So I did!

Each of the stores ended up being out of some of the things I was hoping to buy, but I was still able to get some great deals. Here are the groceries I ended up buying:

And here are the different store transaction details:

Health Food Store Shopping Trip:

5 cantaloupe marked down to $0.59 each (I gave one to a friend whom I ran into at Dillon’s, so there are only 4 pictured.)
Organic bananas marked down to $0.39 per pound (I’ll freeze these for smoothies.)
4 boxes of Rice Milk marked down to $0.99 each
1 box alphabet noodles (for alphabet mac & cheese that we’re making for a school project)

Total with tax: $11.71 (I can’t seem to find my receipt, but I’m pretty certain this is what the total was.)

Aldi Shopping Trip

Butter — $2.79 (ouch!)
Feta cheese — $1.99
2 packages of Multi-colored peppers — $3.18
Hebrew National Beef Franks — $2.49
Total with tax: $11.21

Walmart Shopping Trip

4 bottles of Spic & Span — $0.97 each, used 2 $1/2 Spic & Span coupons
Total with tax after coupons: $2.16

Dillon’s Shopping Trip

Mom’s Best Cereal — $1.50, used $0.55/1 coupon (“doubled” to $1 off), $0.50 after coupon
2 cartons of buttermilk marked down to $0.79 each (I stuck these in the freezer to use in pancakes.)
2 Luna bars — $1.09, used two $0.50/1 coupons (doubled to $1 off), $0.09 each after coupons
2 8-oz. packages of cheddar cheese — $1.88 each
Total with tax after coupons: $6.57

Target Shopping Trip

3 bottles of Simply Lemonade/Simply Orange — $1.27 each, used $1/1 coupons, $0.27 each after coupons
1 Rimmel Glam Eyes Eye Shadow — $2.49, used $2/1 Target coupon + $1/1 manufacturer’s coupon, free plus overage after coupons
Total with tax after coupons: $0.37

I stopped by Dollar Tree hoping to find some Nature’s Own bread. They were all out, but I picked up some fun activities for the children to do this week and for when we travel to Dallas later in the week.
