5 Things I'm Loving This Week

1. Periscope

I kind of felt like breaking up with Periscope after Katch shut down and there was no easy way to save broadcasts (they would disappear after 24 hours!). But Periscope wooed me back again by making it possible to save broadcasts forever on the app itself.

So if you’ve not checked out Periscope yet, it’s better than ever and I’m back in love with it again. I am giving myself grace to not be tied down to scoping at the same time every day right now, but I’m mostly finding that I’m hopping on every afternoon sometime between 2 and 3:30 p.m. Central time.

I’d love for you to join me there or watch some of the broadcasts from this past week. It’s such a fun way to connect on a much more personal level. I’m also experimenting with Facebook Live, as well. Here’s a recent broadcast I did on my favorite things to bring on every trip.

2. Downton Abbey

We finally finished watching the final season of Downton Abbey and I was so happy that it ended well… but I will miss the show! It’s one of the few shows that I’ve ever watched every single season of and loved pretty much every single one.

There are a few somewhat edge-y things in it here and there, but overall, it was very well done and such a great series. It took us at least 4-5 episodes to get into, though, so if you’re one of the few people on the planet who hasn’t watched it, do keep that in mind.

3. She Reads Truth

I know I’ve mentioned She Reads Truth multiple times before, but I just have to mention it again! We’re finishing up Proverbs right now and gearing up to start Acts as the summer study. I glean so much from these studies and love starting my day with them.

4. Pushing Myself in Weight-Lifting

I had 5 really, really intense workouts this week and it felt so good. (Okay, who am I kidding? I was also crazy sore. But it hurt so good! :))

As I told you earlier this week, it feels amazing to be regularly working out again. (Missed my post on how I’m making time for working out? Read it here.)

Speaking at Business Boutique

1. The Business Boutique Event in Phoenix

I flew to Phoenix last week for a few days to speak at the Business Boutique — a new event for women entrepreneurs from the Dave Ramsey team. It was a BLAST!

Not only did I love getting to meet so many amazing women and be inspired by other incredible speakers, I also was so honored to have the opportunity to share about a subject I’m intensely passionate about: monetizing your online platform.

2. Hot Weather & Quiet By the Pool

While in Phoenix, I got to enjoy some time soaking up the sun and quiet by the pools at the hotel we were staying at. I ended up getting to swim a little all three days I was there. This was exciting and unexpected since I’m usually so busy at speaking events that all I get to do is speak, meet with people, eat, blog, and sleep. But this event had a little down time for speakers built in which was such a blessing and I soaked every bit of it up.

3. Golfing With Friends

After the conference was over, the four of us (me + two of our team + a friend) headed to Top Golf for a really fun evening. We laughed until we cried while playing the Wii, had yummy food, and I golfed for the very first time. (Yes, for real!)

I actually wasn’t half as bad as I thought I’d be at golf. In fact, I surprised myself by how much I loved it!

4. Colors of Goodbye book

On the flights to and from Phoenix, I read most of this book. It’s beautiful, heart-warming, touching, and inspiring.

It’s the story of walking through great loss and pain and seeing the beauty in the middle of the brokenness. Have you read it?

5. Milano Cookies

I woke up 4:45 am PST the first morning of the conference (thanks, time change!) and was so hungry but I didn’t have any food in my room other than the overpriced items in the hotel room mini bar and Milano cookies I had picked up at the store the night before for a special on-the-road snack. Guess what I chose to eat to hold me over until breakfast?? The cookies, of course!

So much for the post I wrote last week about food being fuel and making sure you fuel your body well… I guess I’ll make an exception. Because every once in awhile, it’s okay to have store bought cookies for breakfast. Especially when they are your very favorite in all the world cookies! 🙂

1. Ice Cream & Learning to Live Life in Color

I took the kids to Sonic and almost didn’t get anything for myself (I rarely do when I take the kids for a treat.), but then I remembered #TheHappinessDare… And the fact that I’m working on not talking myself out of things I might love just because they seem like an unneeded spontaneous splurge (never mind the fact that it’s less than $3 and I had plenty of Blow Money left in my envelope from the past two months.)

So I ordered this Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Waffle Cone Sundae — much to the surprise of my entire family. And I loved every bite! I’m 34 years old and I feel like I’m finally figuring out what it feels like to live life in color!

2. If by Mark Batterson

I love Mark Batterson’s books and If is no exception. I’ve been underlining, re-reading sections, and sharing quotes with multiple people. I’m only 6 chapters in, but I think it’s going to prove to be an excellent read.

3. My Birthday Boy

This boy turned 7 this week!! For his Birthday Date with mom he chose to go walk around downtown Franklin, check out the new candy store, get crepes at one of my favorite coffee shops, and get ice cream.

Two things you may have picked up on: 1) he loves sweets (wonder where he could have gotten that from??) 2) he’s a huge KC Royals fan.

I love this boy, though it is weird to think that my baby is turning 7 and the season of “littles” is officially over. Even on the hard mothering days, I’m so grateful for the honor of being a #boymom.

Silas, you have captured my heart. I love that you still love to snuggle with me, that you say when you grow up and get married you’re going to live down the street from us, that you have such witty comebacks, that you are so scheduled and like to always have a plan, that you amaze us with your math skills, that you are so driven to excellence in baseball, that you have such a sweet heart toward your sisters, that you have endless energy, and that you learned how to read this year!!!

I can’t wait to see how God is going to use your life in powerful ways for His glory in the future. I love you, Si!!

4. Facebook Live

I’ve been testing out Facebook Live over the past few weeks and I’m starting to really, really like it. I don’t have plans to walk away from Periscope, but I’m loving learning a new live video platform — especially because it’s allowing me to connect with new people in a new way!

5. My Little Baseball Player

I’m SO proud of this boy for making the 6-year-old All Star Team! The All Star game was tonight and he gave it his all… Which means he’s now covered in dirt, sweat, and bruises. And he couldn’t be happier!

1. Fresh Flowers — For Just a Few Dollars!

This picture is clear evidence of this whole new savoring life and slowing down transformation in my life: On the weekends, I’ve been leisurely walking to the store, picking out a $3-$5 bouquet of flowers, and then coming home and salvaging all I can from last week’s flowers and putting together some freshened up arrangements for around the house.

It makes me happy all week long to see these around the house and it’s a simple way I can cultivate beauty in our home, while also giving my soul space to breathe.

2. Launching Make Over Your Evenings

This week we accomplished a HUGE goal for this year — we launched my brand-new course, Make Over Your Evenings!! This was my only business goal for the year, so it was pretty exciting to have it D-O-N-E!

We worked so hard on this course and I am so thrilled with the finished product — and also so honored that thousands and thousands of you have already bought it and begun it. Thank you SO much!

3. Dusting Off My Bike For the First Time in a Long Time

After my poor bike has sat neglected for, um, maybe TWO years, I dusted her off tonight and took her on a 40-minute leisurely ride with Kathrynne and one of her neighbor friends on Thursday evening.

It was such a relaxing way to end a l-o-n-g and full week filled with prepping for our big Make Over Your Evenings course launch.

4. Brown Sugar Biscuit Twists

We celebrated the end of a long and full week and gearing up for a very full and busy weekend by taking a “Sabbath Day” on Friday. We went to bed early, slept in, and had a slow and leisurely morning.

I surprised the family by making Brown Sugar Biscuit Twists for a late breakfast. These are a family favorite and we’ve not had them in a long while. Yummy!!

5. Kaitlynn’s Figure Skating Competition

Kaitlynn competed in four events at the Skate Nashville Competition this weekend. It’s so fun to see her confidence building and her love and passion for this sport start to come out more and more and overcome the nerves of competing.

She pours her heart and soul into this sport and I just love watching her blossoming as a skater and an individual through the hours she spends on the ice every week. {You can watch a little clip from her short program here.}

An Important Note About Next Week

So you know how I only set 4 goals this year? And you know how one of them was that my husband and I would go on two overnighter trips without our kids?

Well, we were able to work out a bunch of details and plan a trip for just the two of us for 4 entire days beginning Monday morning through Friday morning this coming week. We are SO excited as we rarely ever get away by ourselves!

And I’m even more excited because I finally have a great team in place who can cover for me while I’m gone. Which means… drumroll… that I’m leaving my computer at home and plan to be 100% offline while we’re gone.

I’ve never, ever done this on a trip that I can ever remember. Even if I go offline for some of the trip, I always have my computer with me. So it’s a pretty big deal for me!

My team will make sure there are deal posts going up here and on Facebook like usual, I’ve pre-scheduled content pieces for every day of next week, but I won’t be around the comments section nor will I be on social media at all.

I’ll be back sometime on Friday, and while I’ll miss you all, I honestly cannot WAIT to have four whole days to just get to hang out with my husband! See you on the other side!

1. My Big Family

It was National Siblings Day this past week and I dug up this picture for it… yes, there are a LOT of us in my family! 🙂

We had this taken together with my parents at their 40th anniversary celebration last year.

While it’s always loud and crazy when we’re together, I wouldn’t trade my big family for the world! (Also, yes, we’re not really a touchy-freely kind of family, if you hadn’t figured it out by this photo. We make up for it with lots of laughter, though! ;))

2. This Girl Who Inspires Me to Be More Creative

Kaitlynn came in before bed one night this past week with her hair washed and braided and says, “Hey, Mommy, do you like my new braid style?”

I said yes and asked her where she’d learned that braid from.

“Oh, nowhere, actually. I just made it up. I was trying to figure out a new way to do a 4-strand braid.”

That’s my Kaitlynn! Why settle for a normal braid when you could “invent” a new type of 4-strand braid?

This is how she lives her life… I love it and am constantly inspired by it.

3. Slowing Down & Savoring Life

I’ve been slowing way down this year, living life at a much quieter & relaxed pace, and really having time to enjoy the moments and memories.

I’ve also been giving myself space to feel instead of stuff.

To listen intently instead of rush through my days.

To pay attention to the heart needs of my family instead of just trying to come up with quick fixes.

I’m learning that slowness can be good, powerful, and life-impacting. I’ve missed so much depth in life by hurrying through it instead of slowly savoring.

I just got this book in the mail this week and it looks like perfect reading material for The Year of Rest. Have any of you read it?

4. A Fun Surprise at the Chicago Airport

Do you recognize those two books in that display window?? Yes, there are not one but TWO copies of Money-Making Mom by yours truly!

LeAnn snapped the pictures and emailed me and said:

“My family and I went to Chicago last week. We were in O’Hare, walking to our gate to catch our flight home to Atlanta, when something familiar caught my eye in a shop window. I looked up to see two copies of your book on display, surrounded by lots of random things with red and pink. I had to take some shots of it because it was such a nice surprise to see it there. -Leann”

5. My New Exercise/Eating Plan & Feeling SO Great!

Y’all. I’m just not sure what’s gotten into me. Not only have I consistently been working out (mostly weight training) for an hour and half every single week day and absolutely loving it, but I’ve also consistently stuck with this eating plan Jesse put together for me.

I’m even eating — and enjoying! — things like Greek yogurt. Something I used to hate.

Did I mention I feel stronger and happier and more energetic than I have in, well, quite some time? Yeah. It’s amazing how much this whole “taking care of yourself” thing really does work!!  🙂

I don’t know how long this motivation will last, but I’m going to ride this wave as long as it lasts!

1. A Great Deal on Hair Bands

When you are down to one hair band and it’s yellow (a color you never wear!), it’s possible you may do a happy dance in the aisle at Kroger when you see this!!

Love me some clearance tags — especially when they are on something I was already planning to buy!!

Also, what is up with hair bands constantly disappearing?? I feel like we buy a new package once a year and then within 8 months, I am down to one or two!

2. A Beautiful Quote

I loved this quote that my friend Erin emailed to me this week that she had posted on her Facebook Page.

I’d wager to guess that very few of us are living the life we dreamed we would be years ago.
There have probably been some hard knocks, some deep wounds, and some unexpected setbacks for all of us along the way.

It’s good to acknowledge and grieve those losses, but let’s also not forget to embrace right where we’re at, too.

Let’s celebrate what we do have and look for the happy and beautiful in the life right in front of us. It’s there — if you’re willing to look for it!

3. My Morning Quiet Times

The best part of the day for me. Taking time to fuel my body and my soul and plan for the day.
I aim for this to happen first thing when I wake up, but if life happens and it can’t happen as soon as I get up, I just aim for it to happen as soon as it can during the morning.

I’m all about grace not guilt. There’s no “right” way to do Quiet Time. There’s no one “right” time to have a Quiet Time. And it doesn’t even need to be quiet.

What matters is that I’m making it a priority to take time feed my soul. Because if I’m just pouring and pouring and pouring and never replenishing my supply, I’m going to live life completely drained and exhausted. And then I’ll be no good to anyone.

4. Words of Affirmation From My Kids

When your hubby sends you to go have a morning out with a good friend and then takes the kids to breakfast and sends you this… There are just no words for how much this man means to me — especially because he knows my love language is words of affirmation and that this kind of stuff is like shouting love from the rooftops for me!

5. Getting Back to Working Out Again

I had given myself about 6 months “off” of doing anything hardcore when it came to exercise… mostly because I was tired, worn-out, and felt like I needed to take a break from pushing myself.

But after giving myself lots of time to rest and only doing really low impact exercise for a number of months, I got the itch to start working out in earnest again.

So recently, I asked Jesse (my resident fitness guru) if he could put together a more intense workout plan for me and then work out with me every day.

Jesse is never one to do anything halfheartedly, so I now have a complete workout plan all designed specifically for my size and strength and it’s all outlined in a snazzy app where I track all my weights and reps and sets each day. It tells me what to do, how much time I have between each set, and the lets me know when I break personal records and more. I feel all sophisticated! 🙂

But not only that, while the workouts are kicking my tail and I may have had a bad attitude through the first few workouts, I’m now at the stage where I’m all, “Bring it on!” Why? Because I have SO much more energy, feel so much better, and am already seeing some real, legit muscles in places where I’ve never seen them before.

The best part is that my husband absolutely LOVES that I’ve become his workout partner. Our hour in our garage “gym” each day has become one of our very favorite parts of the day!

Marriage enrichment + muscle development at the same time? I’m so down with that!!
