We also swung by the local supermarket in Santo Domingo while we were in the Dominican Republic this past week. I’ll blog more about our adventures there later, but let’s just say my jaw was on the floor about how inexpensive some of the prices were.
I bought a lot of vanilla, almond extract, and coffee. Plus, a little stovetop coffee brewer that our guide convinced us was the best way to make coffee the Dominican way. We’re excited to try it and see if our coffee turns out as well as the coffee we drank there!

I have a similar coffee pot, that I bought in Italy 20 years ago. Nothing else matches it! Makes great coffee, and it’s still going strong. (Make sure you fit the pieces together properly when you put it on the stove — I’ve had a time or two or twenty when I didn’t tighten it properly, and had coffee spewing out the sides of the seal between the 2 pieces.)
I always visit the local grocery stores when we travel — I love to try new foods. Only bad experience I had was in Singapore, when I “discovered” the world’s stinkiest fruit, durien. They say it’s delicious to eat but I could not get beyond the smell.
My husband and I took a trip to Brazil in January, as we are planning to move our family there at the end of the year to do mission work and wanted to see it first. I have to say that I was shocked at how expensive the groceries were. It costs as much, if not more, to purchase most things at the grocery store, and there aren’t really any coupons or sales. It’s going to be quite a change for me. But God is good, and will provide! 🙂

Stovetop brewers are the only way to go for me! My grandmother, who was from Honduras, made coffee this way, and many of the “old-timers” I’ve met – from the Midwest, all over the US, and around the world! – use similar coffeepots. If you love strong coffee, this is *the* way to go. Look at your local estate sales, Goodwill, or even K-mart – I bought a Martha Stewart brand pot about 12 years ago and it was a joy to have.
This is so exciting! I think shopping in a new STATE is exciting since grocery stores are sometimes so different… but wow, another country. Hopefully I’ll get to do that someday too!
This is the only way my mom ever makes coffee, and as someone else said it makes expresso. If you are like most people here that enjoy huge cups of coffee you might be disappointed as this makes little strong ones. But you said you liked it there so I think you will enjoy!
Dominican coffee is the best!!
Although the prices in the DR are low to us….they are still high for the citizens because the wages (if they are even employed) are so low.

Ahhh you bought a an Italian stove top or otherwise known as a Moka. It makes espresso strength coffee so watch out! It’s my favorite way to brew coffee but my husband says it’s sludge. 🙂
I am so envious of your banana purchases. Wish I could find a place around here with marked down bananas. I freeze ripe ones for smoothies but I refuse to buy them at the price they are now.

We went to Dominican Republic in 2004 and I’ll never forget the trip. We also bought home vanilla, and coffee, but I’ve been making Cuban coffee on that same kind of coffee maker since I was a little girl because I’m Cuban. It really is the best way to make coffee!
When we travelled to the USA growing up my mom was complaining about not drinking good coffee the entire time until we got to Miami and she found Cuban coffee and said it was just like ours from Brazil! She acted just she’d never drank it before having more than one cup!

I love that you went to the grocery store in the DR. Whenever we travel, here or abroad, that is one of the top things to do on my lists. I loved buying coffee in Costa Rica and other goodies in South Africa. For me, it’s just fun to stroll the aisles to see what folks in other areas of the world are eating! 🙂 We are going to Mexico this summer, and I can’t wait to bring back some vanilla!
