If you have a four-year degree, you can apply with VIPKID to become a work-from-home ESL teacher to kids in China! We’ve posted about this in the past, and tons of readers have been teaching with VIPKID for years and have great things to say about it!

VIPKID is an online English education platform allowing children ages 4-12 in China to take classes from North American teachers. As a VIPKID teacher, you have the flexibility to work at home and make your own schedule. You can work when you want during hours that best fit your daily routine, and you’ll make $14-$22 per hour!

In order to apply to be a VIPKID teacher, you must:

  1. Have a bachelor’s degree in any field.
  2. Have at least one school year of full-time teaching experience or equivalent hours in similar educational activities (such as home schooling, tutoring, or educational mentoring).
  3. Be eligible to work in the U.S. or Canada.

Note that you do NOT need to speak Chinese in order to teach!

I have two friends who do VIP kids and love it. They get a lot of kids. The kids want to learn and are motivated. And if a student doesn’t click, they can choose not to tutor them. They are tougher in the interview process then they used to be.

    • Meg says:

Thanks for sharing about your friends’ experiences! -Meg, MSM Team

    • Caitlin Bains says:

You cannot choose not to tutor a student. A student can choose a different tutor, but the tutor does not have that ability. I just want people to be aware.

I am a homeschooling, stay-at-home mom and this supplemental income has been a blessing to our family. If you have a bachelor’s degree (in any field) and at least one year’s experience working with kids, you can apply!

  • Lisa says:

It really depends! I have friends who are happily booked with VIP, and know many others with my experience. Thanks so much for sharing about online ESL! It’s such a fun job (if you can even call it that!) and has been a HUGE blessing to our family! : )

  • Rachel says:

What a great idea – would have never known about it if I didn’t find it here.
    Thanks for great post

  • Holly Kalton says:

I work for VIPKID and love it! I also work for another online ESL company — Gogokid — and they pay very well also. Perfect for the stay at home momma looking for a side hustle.

  • Jennifer says:

VIPKID is a legit, credible job and a fun way to make a chunk of change. (We’ve been able to replace ALL of our appliances this year and purchase a new-to-us Honda Pilot with my income!)

    • Jordan says:

That’s so amazing! Thank you for sharing your experience! -Jordan, MSM Team

    • Bethany Cantrell says:

Wow! Can you give a little more info? If it’s not too personal could you tell me about how much you make and about how many hours you work in a week?

      • Leah Szudzik says:

I’m very interested, but I don’t have any experience in teaching. I do have two children that I’ve helped with homework, etc. I do have a bachelor’s degree also. How do they evaluate your experience?

      • MB says:

It’s $9/ 25 minute class. That bumps to $10 if you teach more than 45 classes in a month. They don’t take out taxes, so make sure to set some aside each month if you sign up.

You pick your hours by opening up slots on a calendar. The student then signs up for your time slots. The most popular time slots are early morning or late at night. Hope that helps!

  • Rebekah Holt says:

I have workked for VIPkid for 3 years and it has been such a blessing for our family. Unfortunately, because of new legislation regarding independent contractors, VIPkid can no longer hire teachers who live in CA. Current teachers can continue, but they cannot hire new CA teachers.
