So I showed you yesterday how I picked up free Oscar Mayer Roast Beef and got paid for buy Pillsbury Pizza Crust. Well, I thought you might like to see what I did with it last night.
I chopped up the roast beef and shredded some cheese.
Then, I had to face my fears of opening up the canned dough… which is the very worst thing of all about buying canned dough. {Am I the only one who has this irrational fear?}
I tried. I really did. But in the end, I ended being too much of a coward and had Kathrynne “pop” them for me. {She was all, “Mom, I LOVE popping canned dough cans!” Apparently, she didn’t get that gene from me!}
I rolled out the dough and sliced it into six pieces…
…And sprinkled each piece with some chopped beef and shredded cheese.
Then, I folded the sides in and then were ready to stick on a pan and bake.
I didn’t get a picture of any of the baked Beef & Cheese pockets, but they were a hit last night. If you wanted to add some extra flavor, you could dip them in barbecue sauce — yum!
I love coming up with creative uses for what I get free or very inexpensively at the grocery store. It makes shopping and cooking a fun adventure!

Coming up later, my freezer cooking session pictures and what I did with that bag of Kale!
Me too!! Thank you! Now I know I’m not alone! Ha! My husband thinks I’m weird. I just hate it! I swear my heart rate skyrockets every time I’m forced to open one of those things! If I can’t get hubby to do it, I always wind up holding the paper part with the tips of my fingers and way away from me and then of course it never pops and I have to set it down like it’s a ticking time bomb on the counter, get a butter knife to whack it a few times till it pops. I try! I really do! But I just can’t stand those things!
I got the free meat coupon but didnt get the biscuit one. I have been using my bread machine to make dough like crazy 🙂 its my new love and i dont think the family is minding much 😉
did you preheat and back according to the biscuits directions?
At what temp did you bake them at and how long?
I don’t really use them anymore, but when I did, I whacked the biscuit dough on the edge of the kitchen counter to get them open. 🙂
Do you think you could freeze these? And if you did, would you freeze pre- or post-baked? I think these would be great to just pull out of the freezer on a lazy Sunday night. They sound awesome and very customizable.
And, for what it’s worth, I LOVE opening cans. 🙂 So I’m weird that way.
I have the same fear of opening cans of biscuits. One day I hope to overcome it!!
I used my free meat to make hot pockets too! I bought the turkey (I almost bought the roast beef, but it made me nervous that it was the only packaging that wasn’t clear – I couldn’t see the meat inside! So I picked turkey instead.) and added shredded cheese, broccoli, onion, and honey dijon dressing. I didn’t buy the pizza dough, though – I used your recipe, which is now my favorite pizza dough recipe too! My hungry men gobbled them right up!
Oh yum!
Glad to know I’m not alone in my phobia re: these cans!
I usually peel the paper back, then poke at the seams with a long wooden spoon – so I can do it at somewhat of a distance. Or I just make my husband do it for me…
YUMMY! You didn’t use any of the Kale in them?? Heh…easy way maybe to get some down the children? Or adults too…heh!
I’m not afraid of those cans, but when I first moved out of my parents’ house I didn’t realize you we’re supposed to keep them refrigerated. It was kind of scary – and messy – when one exploded inside my kitchen cupboard.
Love this idea! And I can’t open those cans either. (I’m also afraid of party balloons lol)
Ok, I am going to say it. I love opening the canned dough. I don’t know why, I just do.
Yup, me too. It was always a funny little treat when I was growing up – who got to open the can, and we’d all gather around and enjoy the pop. I never realized it could be frightening to some people. Not that I’m one to point fingers – I have lots of fears of my own, just not this one. 🙂
In total agreement with those pop cans. I cannot do it myself either. Great idea with this Beef and Cheese pocket.
LOL Crystal, I hate opening those cans too!! One year for a Halloween party, I was making “Mummy Hot Dogs” (IE hot dogs wrapped in strips of dough like a pig in a blanket). I ended up slicing my hand open on the edge of the biscuit can and bleeding all over the place. That didn’t help alleviate my distaste for opening those cans! 😉
It’s the anticipation that makes those cans so nerve-wracking. I can’t take it either.
I try to be brave, but I just can’t. I always recruit the husband or a brave or unsuspecting child to do it for me. And I still squeal when it pops.
Those look yummy!
I hate opening canned dough too! I always feel a little panicky when I start to open them, so I usually close my eyes and either drop it or throw it at the counter to make it pop. My 3 year old saw me do this for the first time a few weeks ago and he got a great laugh out of it. Almost everyday he’ll say, “Hey Mom, remember when you got scared of the can and threw it? That was really funny.” And then laughs for quite awhile.
I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who hates open cans of dough! My husband always laughs at me because I cringe and close my eyes when I have to open them. I usually bang the seam where they are supposed to open (but never do) on the edge of the countertop while turning my head away in case it ever really does “explode.”
Or you could put a spoonful of BBQ sauce inside each one, yum! I love the way you folded them.
I had to laugh when I read that you hate to open those cans! It is great to know I am not the only one! I always ask my husband to open them for me, which makes him give me that look: “you can do surgery, but you can’t open this!” Good to know I am not alone!
Ha ha we didn’t buy canned dough growing up. I got some free with coupons a few months after getting married, and after reading the directions, was scared to open them! I had my hubby do it, and he thought it was so funny. To this day it always makes me nervous!
Looks delicious! I love wrapping hot dogs like that too.
And you are NOT the only one with a fear of opening those cans of dough. I don’t have to get help but my heart does beat faster and I close my eyes – it’s kind of like popping a champagne cork, right? If you’ve never heard the story, there is a great urban legend about canned dough – just go to Snopes and look up “The Biscuit Bullet.” It’s hilarious.
I HATE popping canned dough and usually have one of my kids do it for me. Glad to know I am not the only one.
I thought I was the onl one with the fear of opening those pressurized cans!!!! LOL!!! Happy to hear I’m not alone! Glad our daughter enjoys it too!
I TOTALLY have that fear!!!! My husband giggles at me every time I ask him to do it 🙂
I panic opening those cans and often have someone else do it for me. But the fact that Kathrynne does it… HA HA!
You are not the only one with the fear of opening up biscuit cans! I have my husband do it whenever possible. It’s kind of like a Jack-in-the-Box but for big people!
I hate opening those canned doughs too and my daughter loves opening them!
I LOVE your ideas! I too enjoy the challenge of creating meals out of what I get on sale. Your pizza pocket dough recipe is a HUGE hit at our house! My family LOVES them. They are great as a freezer meal for lunches too! Thank you for all you do!
Question, I have an OM freebie coupon for the carving board pulled pork is this the coupon you used for the luncheon meat? I have yet to find the pulled pork in any store in my area but I have seen the item you have pictured. Just curious! LMK Thanks!
It said “Pulled Pork or any Carving Board Meat” on mine. Check yours and see… because I couldn’t find the Pulled Pork either!
Perfect! I pulled the coupon out and YES YES YES you are right 🙂 Thank you!! I’m so glad I asked because I might have let that one expire because of my own stupidity.
By the way, I think I’m going to steal your recipe LOL…. I got the free pizza dough last week & it’s still in the fridge 🙂 I’ve been trying to find new recipes as I’m tired of the same old same old
I’ve never liked opening those cans, and like it even less now that we live at an elevation of over 7,000 feet. Because of the lower atmospheric pressure, many food packages are difficult/messy to open – yogurt spurts out when you peel back the foil lid, potato chips bags are near bursting with air, and the dough cans POP! more when you finally break the seal.
Okay, I think I better stick with living in areas with low elevation!
Yes, and YES! I live at almost 10,000 feet and everything gets bloated, not because it’s gone bad, but because of the pressure. I’ve learned the hard way to cover the yogurt with a napking BEFORE trying to open it. And, let’s not even discuss soda…
The one good thing about living at this altitude in CO, is that because the air is so dry, chips & cookies never get soggy, and clothes dry amazingly quick! And, we have hardly ANY bugs! They cannot handle the cold and altitude 🙂 I have an irrational fear of cockroaches… 🙁
That’s a creative use for those ingredients.
The can issue I have a fear also. But mine is because a can blew up in my car one day. July, Arkansas, 100+ heat. Not a good combo. Sounded just like a gunshot!
That’s freaky!
I’ve had that happen too. Scared me to death LOL
Yep, I’m also a biscuit can opener hater, too. Although, if I peel back the paper of the can and it doesn’t pop, I hit the line of the can against the edge of the counter top and it will usually pop open and I don’t find that as bad 🙂
Happy to hear that I am not alone in my counter whacking adventures! 🙂
I so stress out about those little cans, but my hubby feels like a hero when he is around to help out, so I guess we will keep buying them (with coupon/stock up pricing, of course!) 😉
🙂
I too have that fear and truly thought I was the only one! I have to make my hubby or one of the kids open them and even then it still makes my heart stop every time. We should form a support group haha.
I thought I was the only one who hated popping those biscuits/dough, etc… I just have this vision of them completely exploding. And they really never do pop when you pull the tab…I always have to press on it. I totally admit that when I am pressing on them to make them pop I hold it as far from myself as I can and I turn my head to the side.
Yes, yes, yes!
I hate opening those cans. The worst to me is they never pop like they are supposed to so I am forced to use a spoon which somehow makes it so much worse. My husband laughs at me.
I totally *get* this!
my husband has that same fear.. he wont go anywhere near those cans when it comes time to pop them open lol
That is exactly what I was going to post!! They never pop for me when I unwrap them and I HATE using the spoon! haha, my husband thinks I’m silly…glad I’m not the only one, too 🙂
