I can’t believe Thanksgiving is next week! We are just planning a simple get-together with friends as all of our family live too far away. I’d love to hear what’s on your Thanksgiving menu, or any good deals on groceries you were able to get this week thanks to holiday sales!

Out here in (far) northern California, we are very lucky to pay 99 cents a pound for a turkey – that would be a walmart price. I paid $1.09 per pound at Costco for a bit better quality turkey, and considered myself lucky. Grocery prices are SO much more expensive here than where you are!
I hear that California is the NOT the place for frugal shoppers. 🙁 Hopefully the scenery where you live makes up for it!
My local grocery had butter for 1.88/pound! limit 2! I need to swing by there tomorrow to get 2 more. 4# sugar for 88 cents and Green giant canned veggies 4/$1 so I got creamed corn for my scalloped corn on Thursday.
Those are great prices -especially the butter!
Cheapest turkeys 99cents/pound. Butterball $1.39
Love reading about your trips! This year we are just having a turkey breast and I am not sure what the price was. My in-laws brought it over. We had invited them and my mother over for Thanksgiving this year. I don’t have the entire menu planned but these will be on it for sure:
Turkey!!!, deviled eggs, mashed potatoes, Kings Hawaiian rolls, cranberry something, Snicker salad, scalloped corn, regular corn (for me and my eldest daughter), StoveTop Stuffing (husband and mother both requested!), and gravy (youngest daughter asked so sweetly “are we having gravy?”. I think she would eat it with everything if I let her! We will be eating at noon as I work retail and have to be to work at 5:45pm to work a 10 hour shift. Hoping to squeeze a nap in somewhere!
Wow! That is a busy day! And yum on the Snicker Salad. 🙂 Always a winner if you ask me!
Cheapest turkey here in Sheboygan, WI is 49 cents a pound with a $50.00 purchase, and a one pound limit on $1.99 butter. Our Aldi’s has cranberries for 99 cents a bag, sweet potatoes for 39 cents a pound just like yours. Our Kwik Trip (a gas station) has butter for $2.49/pound with a 5 pound limit, and eggs for $1.29 a dozen and a 5 dozen limit. This special for butter and eggs will run into December, and their bananas are always 39 cents a pound.
That is really interesting about your gas station having good grocery prices! I would totally be shopping there – ha! I rarely see bananas for less than $0.44/lb.
Brigette, my Thanksgiving menu includes turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing (box mix which I will doctor up with veggies and sausage, my husband and son don’t like homemade stuffing, I don’t know what ails them 🙂 ), sweet potato praline casserole, cranberry relish, which I will turn into a salsa to eat with turkey nachos over the weekend, a green salad to balance everything else out and pie!
After reading about turkey prices in the comments, I’m thrilled to share that turkeys here this weekend at Shaw’s are .49 cents a pound with a $10 purchase.
I am picky about my stuffing, too. 🙂 But I happen to be the only one in my family that eats it, so I will not be making it just for me. The cranberry salsa is a GREAT idea for the leftovers – I am going to google to try to find a recipe like that. Thanks for the idea! $0.49/lb seems like the cheapest price, apparently. 🙂
I am picky on my stuffing, too. 🙂 I happen to be the only one in my family that likes it, however, so I won’t be making it just for me. The cranberry salsa sounds fabulous! I am going to google a recipe and try that for our leftovers. Thanks for a wonderful idea!! And I guess $0.49/lb is the cheapest price. 🙂
I am still giddy that I got butter for $1.98/pound at my local Hyvee! It won’t last long with all our holiday cooking!
We did too! We bought 30 lbs, I hope it lasts us a year.
That’s a great price! I would have stockpiled too. 🙂
I love these grocery posts! Super helpful! Thanks! 🙂
I am so glad! Thanks!
Turkey prices here in AZ are 79.lb with $25 purchase at most grocery stores. Safeway had theirs for .79lb or FREE with a $100 purchase. My DH received a $100 gift card for Thanksgiving for Safeway. We shopped this morning, so I got
a 20lb turkey for free 🙂 Great price on your flour. I wish we had Aldi here in AZ.
Free turkeys are the best! You win the prize for the cheapest turkey price. 🙂
Just wanted to say how much I enjoy Bridgette’s posts! I almost always see a deal that I had planned on getting, but slipped my mind. My primary store is Harris Teeter and I had saved the Tide ecoupon but forgot about it until I saw it here. I’ll be sure to pick it up this afternoon!
Ooooh! Another Harris Teeter Shopper! LOVE that store. 🙂
Brigette:
I commented on your post last week, but didn’t get a response, so I’m hoping persistence pays off (and doesn’t annoy anyone!).
I made the Angel Face Cookies referenced in last week’s post. They were wonderful and perfect made following the recipe exactly. (I think people don’t comprehend what “softened butter” means, but I digress.)
Anyway, my question is how do you bake them when the dough has been frozen into balls? Do you thaw (in the refrigerator or just for a certain time on the counter) first or how long do they bake if they are baked from frozen? Would you still moisten the tops and dip in sugar if baking from frozen?
I am so sorry I didn’t see your comment from last week! I usually only check the post for a couple of days after Crystal posts it, and I don’t receive automatic notifications every time a new comment is posted – so I apologize for somehow missing yours. As far as your question, you can bake them straight from the freezer, and yes, I would still dips the tops in sugar. They will have to bake approximately 2 minutes longer. That number is a little flexible, though, so watch them and bake them until they look right. 🙂 You can also thaw the balls for several hours in your fridge. Hope this helps!
Thank you so much! I’m on my second batch of these these already, with a reasonable amount in the freezer for future cookie urges. It greatly helps to know they bake fine from frozen.
I appreciate that you read and answer the comments/questions left for you. Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks for sharing! I LOVE seeing your trips each week! I just paid $0.59/lb for a whole turkey at Publix here in West Florida. I am about to go back to Publix and stock up on some more deals. Happy Thanksgiving!!
Thank you! And Happy Thanksgiving to you too. 🙂
The lowest I’ve seen here (Northeastern Ohio) for turkey is .89/lb (limit 1). We used to get cheaper ones at Kroger or Meijer, but since moving to a place without these store options we’re a lot more limited.
I lived in MI for 6 years, and Meijer was always the place for the cheapest turkey prices. I am sorry you don’t live close to one anymore. 🙁
I paid .69/# and that required a $50 purchase for my turkey.
That price seems to be somewhere in the middle, so I guess it could be worse. 😉
I am always amazed at how much higher you Aldi sale prices are than just a bit west of you over here in Spartanburg county. We are pretty much always about 20 cents less. I have just been hauling home the deals from all over town and am about to head out to Publix to haul home some more. My favorite one was 1.38 for White Lily bread flour this last week at Ingles. Great idea to price match the turkey Food Lion at Wal Mart. You avoided the $35 minumun purchase that way?
So I guess that makes us practically neighbors! 🙂 I did avoid the $35 minimum purchase, but not intentionally. I looked at Food Lion’s ad online, and didn’t notice the requirement (I promise! Do you think it is the same for all areas?). My husband was the one that did the price-matching, but I know he didn’t have any trouble. I actually don’t know what Walmart’s policy would be in this type of situation. Guess I need to read the online ads more carefully in the future. 🙂
