Why We Launched This Book in a Different Way

When our team was brainstorming what we wanted for this book launch, my heart was really to have it be a quiet launch. By that, I mean that I just didn’t want to jump through a bunch of hoops — or make you jump through a bunch of them.

If you read here, you know my heart and you know what I’m passionate about. I don’t want fancy bells and whistles and gimmicks to try to get more book sales. I wanted to keep it straightforward — here’s what the book is about, here’s my heart behind it, and here’s who it’s for.

The bottom line is this: I only want you to buy this book if you feel it’s truly a good fit for you or someone you know. If it’s not a good fit or it’s not in the budget, I totally, totally get that. And I don’t want you spend your money on it.

Because the last thing I want to do is encourage you to buy something that you can’t afford or don’t need. Whether you buy my book or not changes nothing about what I think of you.

So, with this in mind, I asked my publisher if it would be okay if I did some things different than a publisher would typically expect of an author:

  • We waited to really start mentioning the book until just a few weeks before the launch — because I didn’t want to wear you out with stuff about the book, especially if you weren’t even interested in it in the first place.
  • We only personally asked two people to do anything for the book — Dave Ramsey and Michael Hyatt — both who generously wrote an endorsement for the book. (I know! Was that not amazing of them??)
  • We sent out boxes to a number of my dearest friends and said basically, “Whether you post about this book or not changes nothing about our relationship. So there is zero obligation for you to write about this book because I totally get that you get lots of books in the mail and I want to release you from any sort of guilt over needing to write about this book or promote it in some way.”
  • And instead of writing a bunch of blog posts leading up to the launch, I shared that content in my afternoon #MoneyMakingMom Periscopes because I figured the people who were interested in it could show up to those voluntarily.

But I did want to do one big giveaway — something that every single reader could benefit from. We talked about a lot of different ideas, but finally landed upon one that I think every single one of you will be excited about — whether or not you need a copy of Money-Making Mom.

This giveaway is generously being funded by my publishers and they’ve asked if we could ask you to do one of three things to enter the giveaway. I know I don’t usually ask you to anything in order to enter a giveaway, but we want to honor their request. I hope that you’ll maybe want to spread the word about this book to those you know who might be interested in it, even if it’s not a book you need to read right now.

So in advance, I want to say thank you for your willingness to participate in a giveaway that does have a few “hoops to jump through”. It’s not our usual method, but thank you for grace for this special exception.

    I think this would be such a great read. Right now I am back in school to be an accountant, but once I have that degree, I would love to be in business for myself selling accounting services, whether as a tax accountant or a bookkeeper for smaller firms that outsource their accounting. I did try to enter the giveaway. I am not on facebook anymore as it is a time-sucker and pulls me away from my children, but I had already signed up for the course. Will the giveaway recognize that my email was already registered for the course?

    So excited for your great news Crystal. I have read your blogs and books for years. I was not able to get this book since I lost my job in April and money is tight. But I did go through your course and have been brainstorming some ideas. I know that something will pan out and we have learned our lesson and will keep multiple income streams. Your books and website helped us get almost debt free so this season is not as tough as it could be. Again, congratulations and I will get the book as soon as I can afford.

    I am so happy for you, Crystal. As a SAHM and home educator of four, I constantly wonder if there is truly a way for me to generate income from home. The Lord knows I’ve tried. But at age 50, it feels like a flicker about to be snuffed out, like this is “just the way it is” for me. I’m not business savvy, and my health doesn’t allow me to take on additional responsibility providing day care, etc. In spite of this, I do try to give to a ministry that is near and dear to my heart in any way that I can. Oh, if I could start over again, with years ahead of me and the knowledge to make the choices that would have served me better where finances are concerned. To be honest, it’s discouraging that my reality is what it is. I’m 50 and time feels against me. I hope younger moms will take your advise and apply it while time is still on their side. I know, from experience, that they won’t regret it.

    After a very weary night (two flat tires on the way home – with the whole family in the car), I arrived home to a package and it was my pre-ordered copy of your book! I was incredibly excited. After a long day at work and trying experience with the flats involving moving three car seats to my parents’ vehicle to get the kiddos home while my husband waited for AAA, it was just what I needed to cheer me up. I’ve snuck a few moments today to get in some reading and I absolutely love it thus far! This is the first time I’ve purchased something like this from a blog I follow, and I’m so glad I did. It is just like reading your words here on the blog – honest, heartfelt, genuine. I can’t wait to keep reading. 🙂

Although 2 flats were certainly not the making of a pleasant event, it worked out pretty well as my mother was coming home behind me so we were able to put all the kids in there while the car was jacked up to change out one flat for a donut (before we knew there were 2 flats!), the man up the road was gracious enough to come out and help us and my parents only live about 5 minutes from where it happened so it didn’t take long for my dad to join us so we could get the 3 carseats into another vehicle and the kids home as quickly as possible. Really, it could’ve been worse! But your book was still a pick-me-up at the end of the road. 🙂

    I want to thank you for your openness and willingness to be a vessel for Christ to share with moms. Your words are life breathing and thought provoking encouragement day in and day out.
    As a mom who became a stay at home mom later in my kids life I have been so blessed by your teachings and books.
    I thought the transition from full time working mom to stay at home mom would be simple… I ran events for a living… how hard is a toddler and preschooler full time. Yet, in 6 weeks (including Thanksgiving and Christmas), I lost myself, I tail spinned out of control. Nothing was what I thought… I was lonely, disheveled, sleep deprived, holidayed out, an exhausted hot mess….. and meanwhile my husband thought why is this so hard which wa sso discourging…. I had to regroup… your book Say Goodbye To Survival Mode was a huge catalyst to me finding balance!
    I now have a much better rhythm. .. I have outlets that allow me to use my gifts and talents and our children are thriving as I have learned that if I don’t care for myself I won’t have anything left to give. (Shout out to Hearts at Home and Jill Savage too!!)
    I think each mom has to find this out on their own what works… I am thankful that you are there to help Lend advice.
    This new book is imparative to help bridge that work and home life aspects better.
    I am excited to read. Yesterday my sister returned to work after the birth of their 3 month old 1st born daughter. .. this was so hard for her…. she loved her job before, but now her sweetie has stolen her heart and she was so pained to have to leave her. I hope that there will be opportunities that will allow her to stay home and raise her daughter and any other children. I know that finances really dictate her ability and alternatives are what we are looking for.

    I am very much looking forward to your book, especially since I’ve always loved your blog and bundles opportunities. Unfortunately I missed out on applying for the launch team but I save all of your blog posts to re-read for reminders and inspiration.

    My husband started his own business this year and it’s struggling and I’m only able to work part-time with our son’s therapy schedules. He has autism and a few months ago we found out he is losing his sight. I’m resuming helping other families fight for benefits since we had to fight so hard and you should always help others when you can.

    The last 6 years of our lives were turned upside down not only with the autism, but losing our home, my 3 back surgeries in 15 months, losing a child, my husband’s neck fusion surgery, my car accident, uterine surgery, my grandmother’s passing and my cardiac surgery this year.

    I’m telling you all this because I want to thank you from my soul for what you do every day. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read your blogs and it helped me and not to just save money (which has helped us so much!) but emotionally and spiritually.

    Well, I entered! I can only hope. I could sure use this money to make a new start. I had to leave an alcoholic husband, lost my home, just lost my job, trying to find a new one, trying to make cash any way I can, eBay, making jewelry, yard sales, etc. I’m always looking for legitimate ways to earn money working from home. I’ve spent many hours searching online for any way possible to make a few extra bucks. I honestly can’t even afford the book right now, but will be checking in to your blog on a regular basis for ideas, coupons, recipes, whatever you have to offer.

    I tried to have a craft business and was able to seek out some money. I learned about marketing and sales from that adventure.

    But when God closed one door and opened another with my passion, is when my business took off. Now I have the privilege of helping families plan vacations and return with lasting memories.

    This is an amazing giveaway. I would use the money to buy a vehicle as I do not have one right now. My husband works out of town often so I have to depend on my inlaws for a vehicle if I need one. They are great but living 30 miles from town I hate not having a vehicle of my own. My husband was going to bring me one of his work trucks the last time he came home but the engine went in one and the transmission blew in the other, the day before he was set to come home. To win would be such a great blessing to me.

    I preordered the Kindle book, so I was so excited to download it this morning! I try to squeeze in 15 minutes of reading time during my girls’ nap time each day, so I enjoyed reading the first part of the book and answering the question about what financial freedom means to me. That was a helpful exercise! (And I so appreciate the specific instructions to use my device’s notes function, as I wouldn’t have thought of that otherwise!)

    I am not yet a money-making mom, and I’ll be honest, I haven’t really thought of myself as one… my husband works for a missions agency, so we are well-supported (though modestly supported) by the donations of friends and family. So, sometimes it has felt a little funny to try to wor/earn extra money, because I don’t want to seem like I don’t appreciate their support or God’s provision.

    Doing that exercise about financial freedom helped me see that there are some things I really think we “need” + a few things we want + a desire to bless others (both through donating more than 10% and also through being able to treat a friend to lunch on her birthday, and stuff like that.

    I could definitely benefit from the Visa card for my business. I was a little confused. When I click on rafflecopter does it post on my behalf to twitter and FB or do I need to do that on my own and just check the boxes on rafflecopter?

    I have been in touch with your team in order to figure out how to buy your book for Kindle. Nevertheless, even though I’ve been able to buy your previous books (I LOVED “Say goodbye to survival mode”), I cannot understand why this time it is impossible to get it in electronic format. Besides, even if I wanted to buy a hardcover copy directly from you, it is not possible, as you appear as a restricted seller in my country (Spain). Please bear this in mind. Even though I understand that your main target may be the US, you have readers in other countries who would love to enjoy your new work.

      I am so sorry for the issues! My publisher is the one who handles all of this so we don’t have say over this, but I think it might be because the Kindle/hardback version isn’t coming out until December in some of the other countries? I have no idea why, but that seems to be the case. Is that what’s happening for you?

    Thank you for this offer! I have followed along for a few years. Your story of the basement apartment has always been in the back of my mind. It was one of the reasons we stopped paying for many extras that were just a waste of money. We try to be frugal now, especially never eating out for meals, and honestly we don’t miss it! Saving money is the bonus!

    I’ve really learned a lot from you over the course of this past year. Last year, my husband’s business started struggling, and even though I work full time, we’ve had a really rough year.

    I’ve implemented a lot of tips about reducing our spending, taken on a weekend job, and asked my family to do without a lot of stuff that they’re used to.

    Thank you for always taking the time to share your life, the ups and the downs. It’s nice to read about a “regular” person who has the same struggles as some of us.

    I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your book! As a member of the launch team, I quickly read and knew that this book would help me re-focus on where I am. I’ve had a few failed attempts at creating a business from home. This past time, I was incredibly close to a big contract with a church-based publisher for merchandise sales. I still don’t have any “no” for that deal, but have pretty much lost faith that the “yes” will arrive. Waiting around for this has really caused me to get into a funk — BUT, your book has helped me get back in the saddle again. Thanks a million, Crystal!!

    I pre-ordered your book a couple days ago and am excited to dig in. Could not have come at a better time. My husband was just notified last Monday that his position at work will be eliminated, effective Dec 1.
