I was honored to be asked to share what I really want for Mother’s Day for a Time.com piece. Want to know what I said? Here’s my blurb:
“My ideal Mother’s Day gift would be my family all pitching in together to clean up the house, do the dishes, fold and put away the laundry, and make me something yummy to eat while I took a bubble bath or read a good book.” — Crystal Paine, moneysavingmom.com

I’m pretty spoiled in that at least a few times per year, my family gives me this exact gift of a complete night off while they make me food + clean up the entire house. It’s pretty much the best gift ever, in my opinion.
What would be YOUR ideal zero-budget gift for Mother’s Day? Tell us in the comments.

I would want what I got. My husband thought about what I’d want the most, and rushed home from work the day before Mother’s Day so that I could go on a bike ride with our older kids when the weather was nice (it is not nice here today, on Mother’s Day.) I got to be with my family all day today, we all ate together, and I received several loving cards, homemade gifts, and a lovely plant from my husband. I am so thankful that I got to be with my family, and for my own mother. Praying for my sisters-in-law who lost their mother six months ago and are having a hard day today.

I want my adult children to come home and clean the 22 windows with multiple storm window and screen pieces each. They are a real pain. But, since they live all over the east coast it is probably not happening!

I just blogged about what Mothers really want for Mothers Day. Like you they are all free or almost free and are thoughtful ways of service. I’m so grateful for my sweet husband that blesses me on a regular basis with those things. Loved what you said and totally agree 🙂

Want? To thank God for the incredible, incredible blessing of my mother who passed away a the week prior to Mother’s day 16 years ago. Because my husband had just been hired to work in another state and we needed there and from hotel to settled in an apartment, God saw fit to orchestrate for us the celebration of Mother’s Day the Sunday prior. She was a gem from another generation, her parents having immigrated to this country from less than ideal circumstances…she carried well the plate she was served being the help perfect for my dad and his fairly 24/7 career requirements which included her manning the phone(days before caller ID and call waiting and voice messaging) and extending hospitality to perfect strangers and friends alike, many that came with the job, PLUS family and home/property. Never complaining. Always choosing “ready and willing” even while navigating the challenges of having kidney failure the last few years of her life. Early to bed and early to rise ~ meals always on the table with or without help. Those were home-cooking days way before fast food…yet do remember when Winky’s arrived in town. Remember eating there ONCE…when on a clothes-shopping trip with her friend and daughter. Clothes wringer washed and dryer the clothesline(outdoors as weather permitted and indoors otherwise). Accomplished seamstress and that of many other skills. Many friends…always managed a smile. She never held a driver’s license ~ just knew from her own mom home economics, creativity . . . patience. And a quick recharge nap in her favorite chair when so appropriate.
What do I want? To be my mother’s daughter, following her excellent wife and mother ensample as God equips. To prayerfully know our children and their children and expectantly pray their children’s children know a willing heart with hands of gratitude being in a family of graced faith. Yes, indeed.

A hot bath followed by a foot massage by my hubby would be fabulous! An added bonus if my kids aren’t fighting or yelling during the process.

Michelle, that’s exactly what I told my 14 yr. old son …I want obedient children. I have three teens and a 7 yr. old so Crystal’s idea sounds perfect and doable for me. I definitely don’t need more chocolate! 🙂 I just may sneak this idea in. Thank you, Crystal!

I want my oldest son home. When I had boy #2 a couple of weeks ago, my mother in law took our 21 month old back across the state with her to give me some time to adjust. I’ve enjoyed the rest, but I really miss my little man. He won’t be back until sometime next week. 🙁

Currently my smallest one is 10 months and gets up 2 times a night, I get up w him both times. I think the greatest gift would befor hubby to take the night shift and my older 2 sleep in. Until at least 8! That and my washing machine to work correctly…

Totally Agree Crystal! Best gift EVER! That and obedient children. That’s what I told my 3 kiddos I wanted for Mother’s Day this year. 🙂 I now totally understand why my mom asked for that every year!!

My kids are really little right now (6, 2, and 1), so without a doubt I would love a morning to sleep in as long as I wanted. In this dream scenario, my husband would take the kids out of the house for an entire morning so I could catch up on sleep, wake up without an alarm, and read on the porch by myself. It sounds so indulgent!
