I didn't go shopping this week. Not at all. In fact, aside from a quick day trip with Silas to Denver for the ShopatHome.com Blogger's Summit, I didn't leave the house much at all.
The girls had lingering coughs and congestion from their nasty flu last week and then Silas came down with a fever a few days ago. So we've stayed in, stayed put, and been taking lots of Vitamin C, trying to eat well, and getting extra sleep. And it's been nice! In fact, I realized that I need to make a concerted effort to go back to saying "no" to busyness and stay home at least a few full days per week. Life is so much more organized and calm when I do so.
We didn't go grocery shopping at all this week, but since we have a great stockpile of food built up, we just ate from our pantry and freezer (seeing as last week's Baking/Cooking Day guaranteed that we had plenty of food at the ready in our freezer!).
I didn't even so much as open up my coupon box until this evening. It stayed closed for almost ten days and it was a great feeling to just let it sit for awhile while I baked and cooked and tended to sick children.
Of course, I missed out on some deals, for sure, but it was good to take a break. I've found that giving myself a breather every now and then really helps me to keep things in balance and it also prevents coupon "burn-out" (see this article for more on that topic).
I did, however, get 24-roll pack of toilet paper and 8 bottles of shampoo in from Alice.com. They wanted me to try out their new service and gave me a small shopping credit to do just that. Most of the prices are more than what I'd usually pay, but the shampoo/conditioner were only $0.60 per bottle, which is about $0.10 more than I usually pay after a sale and coupons. The toilet paper was also just a tad bit more than I have been paying for it recently as well.
All in all, I spent $11.28 for everything pictured above. Not the greatest deal ever, but seeing as it was shipped straight to my door and shipping was free, it's a decent deal in my opinion.
If you live way out where there aren't many shopping options, I'd definitely recommend checking out Alice.com. Their "Best Deals" section is my favorite place to frequent. They often have manufacturer's coupons available which can further sweeten the deals–like the 64-oz. bottle of Snuggle I got last week for $0.40 shipped.
I'm planning to do a more extensive review of Alice.com as well as a giveaway in the near future so be looking for that if you're interested in trying this shopping service out.
And this has nothing to do with bargains, but a lot of you have been begging for pictures of Silas, so here's one from this past week that I took of him with his new teddy bear:
Can you believe he's already five months old? He is growing like a weed, starting to jabber a lot more, trying to scoot around a little, and he's very much a Mama's boy. I love him to pieces and feel so blessed to be his mother.
Stay tuned for pictures of the girls this next week when I'll be sharing a peek into our homeschool lessons recently. So many of you have been asking for more pictures and tidbits from our life, so as I have time, I'll be doing my best to share these. And I'll also be posting the first installment of the Becoming a Work-At-Home Mom series. I promise. 🙂 This past week flew by and I never had a chance to finish it, but I'm determined to sit down and get it completed in the next day or two and have it posted early next week.

I just want to say thank you for all the time you put in to this. I has to be hard, I also have a 3 almost 4 year old and a 5 month old. I love to follow your bolg.
thanks SO much for the Alice info…had been seeing a lot about it on the blogs but did not really check it out until I saw you post on it…amazing there…I am very happy!
Thanks for the info on Alice! I just placed an order. I only have a Rite Aid and Price Chopper close by that I shop at, and a Hannafords and Kinney Drugs which I don’t usually shop at, so I don’t get in on many of the deals so many people rave about like Wags and CVS. Alice may be a nice option for me for some products.
p.s. Your son is adorable!!
Thanks for the link to alice.com ! I just bought 2 bottles of conditioner, 2 bottles of shampoo, deoderant, and a 4 back of bath soap for $5.92! We live an hour from Walgreens and CVS and rarely get the deals there. Glad to be able to just order at a great price. Thanks so much!
That baby boy is a doll! I can’t believe it’s been five months, either.
Yesterday I spent $30 at Rite Aid and will get $37 back in rebates, plus I put it on my CC and got airline miles. I thought, “I have to tell Crystal how much I appreciate her and all the work she’s done”. So there you are- THANKS so much for teaching me how to coupon! It’s been a huge blessing to our family.

Great savings this week at Target, Publix and Walgreens. Very happy with what I accomplished. My husband was appreciative when he watched the amount due at Publix rapidly decline as the cashier rang up my coupons. He was very happy with what we saved. That makes it well worth it to me.
I just checked a few prices at Alice.com and it will definitely save me a bit of money. We don’t receive many usable coupons in the newspaper and a few stores won’t take printable coupons.
I think it will help me make fewer impulse buys as well.
Silas is absolutely adorable! What a long traveling day for you. Thanks so much for posting.
I wanted to thank you for how much you have taught me in regards to couponing and saving money! I have chosen you for a blog award! http://pennypinchingpenguin.blogspot.com/2009/10/blog-award.html
great linky i left some of mine! 🙂
appreciate the linky love
Silas is soooooooooo…..cute! Can’t believe it’s been 5 months! You are so lucky to be a Mom. Love your blog Crystal!
Silas looks like one happy little guy!
Thanks so much for the info on Alice.com. I just placed an order. Some of their coupons make for great deals, especially when factoring in the time I would have spent clipping and organizing coupons, looking for sales and driving to the store.
We use Tom’s of Maine products (which are pricey but worth it, IMO) and Alice.com has the best prices I’ve ever seen on this brand. They even beat Walmart!
What a cutie!!
I hope everyone’s back to normal and healthy now! It’s hard when everyone gets sick.
Hope you have a great weekend!
God bless,
Amanda
I understand the staying at home feeling. I am a stay at home mom and have been on the road every day all day most of last week and the week before. I miss staying home. My house shows that I have not been home and my cooking or lack there of is also a problem, including the extra spending.
Being a mother to six, three of which have tons of activities, drs appointments etc..makes it difficult for me to stay home.
On top of that I go to school one night of the week, volunteer at church one night a week, and my second boy has football games another evening…sigh…I can’t wait to be at home for longer than an hour at a time. LOL
Good luck, and take a breather when needed.
I too have taken a break from couponing and miss my coupons, but I don’t have time to organize my coupons or scan the deals.
I don’t have a blog but wanted to let you know of a deal. I got some 2.50 off coupons in the mail from Luvs. Family Dollar has Luvs baby wipes for $2.50, using the coupons makes them free!
I just ordered a few things from Alice.com. Thanks for posting this. The deals I got were good for this area, especially when you consider gas prices and having NOT to take two children out in the cold.
Blessings–
Dana
Thank you for the great info. I had never heard of Alice.com befor and will check that out. Nice blog!
Silas is so cute! He actually looks a lot like my 4-month-old, so I guess that’s why I think so 🙂
I just ordered from Alice.com….loved it! For me, the prices on the Suave conditioner and my maxipads were cheaper (thanks to their own coupons) than I can usually get (even with sales). Plus, they offered a $10 gift certificate “after your first purchase of $50.” However, they let me use it with my purchase, which was just over $50. Thanks for mentioning this site!
I think you’re discounting the convenience of NOT dragging three small children to the store. I’d pay the little bit extra to have it delivered to my door–especially now that it’s raining and freezing outside!
I love the picture of Silas! (and sorry, I haven’t had my morning coffee yet, I double posted one of my links)
A quick daytrip to Denver? I thought you live in Kansas City?
**********************
Money Saving Mom here: No, we moved from Kansas City in October of 2008 to the land of no CVS. 🙁
However, ShopatHome.com flew me (and Silas!) out and back to Denver on Monday since I’m a part of their Blogger Advisory Board–a group of four bloggers who were hired by ShopatHome.com to do some advising/consulting for their company over the next six months. We got to meet their staff, see an inside look at how the company runs, and do a whole lot of brainstorming with them. I really enjoyed it and am excited about the opportunity to work with them.
Lisette, It’s probably because you hit your tab button. I’ve discovered that you can not hit tab without jumping to the next Mr. Linky on the page.
Kristin
