Slow Day: Week 17

Welcome to my weekly Slow Day post, inspired by Monica from The Homespun Heart. My Word for 2018 is Slow and, in the spirit of that word, I’m taking one day each week (Wednesday) off — I’ll be unplugged and offline and plan to move at a slower pace, take time to do things that refresh me, and just really focus on being present and savoring the moment.

Each week, I’ll be sharing a photographic peek into my Slow Day — and I’ll let the pictures almost 100% speak for themselves, instead of giving many explanations. Enjoy a little peek into our lives!

I told you last week that we finally found a table we loved for our formal dining room. We wanted something that would seat up to 10 people, that was in our budget, that would take wear & tear well, that was simple and durable, and that matched with our overall look of our house.

We were so excited to find this one as it meets all of our qualifications! The leaf is built in and when it’s fully extended (as shown above), you can seat 10 people around the table. (It’s cozy, but you can do it!)

We got 10 chairs — two have different backs and we’ll use those on the ends. They are on order and will be coming in in June.

Now we just have to find some simple wall-hangings and this room is done! We’re excited to now have seating for large groups between our kitchen table, our dining room table, our covered deck, and our walk-out basement patio!

I’m still enjoying the $0.99 flowers!

Ruth Schwenk had a new book come out this past week and she sent me this air plant. I’d never even heard of an air plant before, but I am determined not to kill it! Any advice or tips for me?

Jesse and I watched Dunkirk while the kids were at school and then I went to meet a friend for lunch. I always love it when I have leftovers to bring home for lunch the next day!

They were filming something right outside where we ate lunch so I had fun people-watching before I left for home!

We picked the kids up from school and drove to downtown Nashville for a fun family outing. I got in a little reading while we drove — until I got crazy car sick! (I’m slowly savoring this book. It’s been really thought-provoking and I don’t want it to end!)

We hit up Dave & Buster’s for another Half Price Wednesday! Our whole family is quite competitive and the kids had been researching and watching YouTube videos on the best arcades to play at Dave & Buster’s. (Yes, we are those weird people that go into these kinds of things super prepared and with a strategy!)

We did another guys versus girls competition and had a blast! We girls did better this time and we decided not to cash in our winnings but to just save them on our cards so that we can get a bigger prize next time.

On the way home, I wrote a few cards to people and then I headed out to spend the evening with my Discipleship Small Group.

It was a good Slow Day! And by the way, I am just loving taking Wednesdays off! It has made me so much healthier and productive this year — and I look forward to Wednesdays every week. I especially love the fact that I can forget about my phone for a day!

Maybe I’m just paranoid about these kind of things but your address is clearly visible for all to see on the envelopes. Wasn’t sure if you noticed that or maybe you’re not paranoid like me about that kind of thing. I’m afraid I’ll get all sorts of “unwanted guests”! Safety first!

    • Aubrey says:

That was the first thing I noticed in that picture also! But, then I looked closer and it seems to be a business address instead of home.

    • Cathy Dunlap says:

that was my first thought too. but then I thought maybe I will send her a nice surprise card in the mail. I have followed her blogs since she was in the beginnings of her biblical womanhood blog but have hardly ever posted.

    • Wendi says:

That was exactly my thought! Crazy people out there now a days and you can’t be too careful!

    • Lea says:

That was my thought too but on closer look maybe it’s a business address? Office address? An address people can get easily anyway? Rather than their household address…

Either way, something to think about!
      At least in my book,

    • That’s our public address that is on all emails we send out. 🙂 It goes to a PO box. It’s actually the address we use for all of our mail. 😉

  • Katie Reid says:

Love how you’re taking a slow day…so wise! Thanks for sharing a pic of the #MadeLikeMartha magnet too. 😉

Crystal, I noticed it appears you have romaine lettuce in your salad, and wasn’t sure if you heard about the bad e.coli strain that’s hospitalized over 40 people due to romaine from AZ. Sorry all the comments seem negative so far, just don’t want anyone to get sick!

  • What a gorgeous view from your kitchen! I love the window treatments.. so elegant. They really make the room look grand being hung higher than the window. I bet it looks beautiful at Christmas!

Good Luck finding some pictures. Wayfair just had a huge sale yesterday. It took me five years, but I finally got a picture for my living room. Love the table to.
I know it can be so hard to find the perfect one. It’s nice to have a leaf because you can make it smaller. I have an 8 person table for my dining room and it’s about 1 ft to big. Of course I didn’t measure when I picked it out. I just fell in love and said that’s the one. Live and learn. 🙂

Can I ask where you for your table? We’ve been looking for one.

  • Keyla says:

I love the table!! where did you get it? ❤️it’s beautiful!

  • GArmour says:

Your new home is beautiful now and I’m sure will become more so as you create your own personality as a family through new decor. It’s also great to watch your kids mature as you give them new experiences. Keep it up!

Beautiful! Air plant care. Get a spray bottle and mist every other day. (very important) Once a week, it you can take it out of the container and let it float in water for an hour, then return it to the vase. If you are unable able to take it out, put it in the sink, run water over it for about 2-3 minutes. Let it sit in the water for about an hour and dump the rest of the water out.

Your curtains are lovely. Where are they from?

Our family enjoys going to Dave and Busters for 1/2 price night. However, there are a couple ways to make the deal a bit sweeter. If you sign up for a rewards account and link your players card (that they load chips to), they’ll periodically send coupons for buy $20, get $20 free. They aren’t valid on Wednesdays, but you can go in a different day ahead of time and use them. Also, you can buy discount D&B gift cards online to pay for the purchase in store. You can sometimes score other D&B coupons on the back of receipts at local grocery stores, on fundraising cards (like schools sell) and in other coupon books.

    • Thanks so much for the tips! We signed up for the rewards account a few weeks back. So far, no coupons, but we’re hopeful that maybe that will change soon! And I’m going to look for discount cards online!

  • Tracy says:

Your home looks amazing! I also suffer from car sickness I started using sea bands and they are amazing. They are based on a pressure point and you can get them at almost any pharmacy, Target or even Walmart.
