This is a new-to-me tip that Cradle Rocking Mama posted about in her post that she emailed to me. Here’s part of her post:
Here’s how to make your razor last forever.
DRY IT.
Seriously. When you’re done shaving, rinse it, pat it dry, and leave it somewhere it either won’t get wet again or will easily drain off and air dry quickly.
That’s it.
What I read that gave me this tip said that a guy did an experiment to see how he could extend the life of a disposable razor, and the thing he tried that worked the best was to simply keep the blades as dry as possible between uses.
He said that he had used the same $1 razor blade for A YEAR and it still worked just as well as when he first opened the package.
I’m here to tell you, it’s all true.
I got a package of disposable razors with a coupon a few years ago. I’ve been using one of those razors for the last eleven months, and when I shave I’m still as smooth as silk!

Have any of you tried this? I’d love to hear whether it worked for you, too.

I live in china, and women here don’t shave, so it’s difficult to find women’s razors, even when I go to a big city. I’ve been doing this for at least six years now; still on the one box of eight refills I brought over here eight years ago!
Jessica says
I don’t believe this. I always keep mine dry but I start getting razor burn after a week of using one anyway.
Kelly says
I shave every day or every other day. I always shake off my razor and then put it where it won’t get wet, blades up. I have been using the same blades for at least a year.
Lesa Husmann says
It works for us! My husband and I do this. The teenage daughters, not so much. But they can be taught!
Michelle says
My husband is meticulous about doing this and it works for him!

I also heard about this from Clark Howard’s show – an engineer type called in the tip and Clark mentions it every so often. I have been doing this for years and my razors last for about 12 – 18 months and it sure does make a pack of razors that you get for free or almost free last a loooong time. After I shave, I dry of the razor on my towel and hand it up to dry where it won’t get wet again.

Yes, I’ve heard this tip, but keep in mind that disposable razors are disposable for a reason. A doctor once explained that they aren’t meant to be used for a year considering what they are used for. Germs, skin, bacteria, etc will stick in the blades, so just keep that in mind. Yes, maybe drying to extend for a month or so, but unless you are sanitizing as well, it’s really a gamble that if you nick or cut yourself that you are exposing yourself to a greater chance of infection. Be safe!
Jane @ Live Rich and Free says
This absolutely works. I just shake my razor dry and leave it on the bathroom counter. Even though I shave every day, a pack of 4 disposal razors last me about 2 years (only because I inevitably drop one at some point a nick a blade, so I throw it away.)
Amy says
Clark Howard has talked about this tip for years and swears by it. It definitely works! I never remember to do it.
Also, the blades with the lotions and gels on them do not last as long because once the lotion or cream is gone, the place it was is scratchy and rough. They are a waste of money.
Val says
I, too, have heard Clark’s advice since he talked about it a few years ago and have it a try. It’s been over 2 years and I’m still on my first bag of 5 disposable razors! All I do is give it a couple of quick pats on my towel, then put it back in the corner where it won’t get wet. Saves so much $$ and I never have to worry about running out!!

I honestly could not remember where I’d read this; fortunately one reader left me a comment on the post with the link to Clark! I’ve updated the post to reflect that. Love giving credit where credit is due! Thank goodness for that engineer who called him, right?
Ann says
Yes – this does work. If you think of it – the metal on your razor isn’t being dulled by your hair as much as corroded by the rust. At the very least blow hard on the razor to slightly dry it or pat it on a dry towel.
Carrie says
Thanks for sharing my tip! I like the idea of using alcohol on it, too. I’ll probably try that now!

I can attest that this tip is one of the best things you can do for your wallet. I have been drying mine for years.
Jenni/Life from the Roof says
I don’t always dry it, but use my razor until it doesn’t feel comfortable anymore, and I still have a package I purchased at least a couple of years ago. Disposables seem to last longer than the fancy ones that have all of that gummy stuff on them.
Kristi says
I’ve been doing this since I read the suggestion in the comments to another post you had on shaving some months back. It makes sense to me. I even use the blow dryer on mine for few seconds before I put it away.
Amanda H. says
I usually dip mine in rubbing alcohol and then dry it. It really does extend the life of the razor. Not close to a year but 3-4 months.
Denise says
I pour rubbing alcohol over mine too! I have noticed a huge difference! But I do have very sensitive skin so I still don’t use my for as long as some of you may be able to but every week longer helps!
Brooke @ PiggyBankSavers says
There is nothing worse than accidentally leaving the razor in the shower only to find the blades rusted the next time you use it, such a waste of money! I really need to work harder on remembering not to leave it in there!
Chelsea says
I’m pretty tired, so I’ll use that as my excuse, but I just read your name as “Broke” 🙂 given your blog name, I thought it was kind of funny. 🙂
Yasmin says
Ha. Thanks for the laugh.

Wow, what an interesting tip. I’ve never heard of this before but with the price of razors, I’m definitely going to try it!
