Melissa emailed in the following tip:
Many times we buy our household and personal care items at drugstores because of their great bargains; but if you take moment to look, the deals at your local grocery store might surprise you.
Since food is the main thing grocery stores sell, many of the household and personal care items need to be “cleared” off the shelves after a certain amount of time. The item in the photo above was marked 50% off and I had two coupons that doubled to $1.00 — so this purchase became free plus $0.30 overages for me!
So next time you’re at the grocery store, keep your eye out and your coupons handy; there just might be some “gems” waiting for you to find. -submitted by Melissa from BravelyFrugal
Great tip. I just found an 80-count box of Tampax on clearance at the grocery store last night- it was 50% off and under $6. There were lots of 40-counts for the same price, so I was really excited!
My walgreens had a bunch of candy marked down yesterday. They had big box of chocolate covered cherries for 87 cents, Kahlua candy for 99 cents and chocolate covered pretzels for 1.27 so I stocked up for mother’s day/teacher gifts. Couldn’t beat that deal at all. Also got my dad a box of chocolate covered blueberries for 87 cents. Have never seen them before.
I always check the discount rack at our Safeway when I shop. I feel like it’s a secret that only loyal shoppers know about because the shelf is almost hidden down a hallway near the bathrooms! I’ve gotten lots of bath products at 50% off (even better when I have a coupon to go with them!) and soups/spices/dry goods.
i agree sometimes you find great deals on clearence at grocery stores
Several times I have picked up clearance items and assumed the cashier would charge the price marked on the package. Often tho the cashier won’t notice and the original price will automatically be charged. It’s a good idea to call the cashier’s attention to the the clearance price even if is marked on the package. Just sayin’
I also just found a rebate on the package the other day.
I sometimes score nice deals at my local Kroger by checking the clearance shelves for organic and natural food items plus housewares (extra spoons for 10 cents, for example).
I always check the clearance shelf at our HEB. I’ve been able to get cereal, pizza sauce, energy drinks and cat food just to name a few things. Sometimes they’re marked down because of obvious damage to the box, but the food is still fine. And sometimes I have no idea why they’re marked down!
My local Fred Myers discounts cans of soup just because they are dented. Healthy Choice Campbell soups are usually about $1.50 a piece. I had a coupon for $1.00 off of 3, and I found three discounted down to $0.79!! A great deal.
I’m so ecstatic you featured my tip! Thank-you so much! Grocery stores are fantastic places to find clearance, espicially if you have coupons to match. Happy Bargain Hunting everyone:)
Perfect timing! This morning I got Hefty kitchen trash bags on (85 count) for less than $6.00!
Last Saturday I found a 112 ct box of Pampers size 3 marked down to $12.50, used my $2 off coupon and got them for just 9 cents each!! I was so excited you would have thought I just won the lotto! Although I guess it was like winning a diaper lotto! It definitely pays to check the reduced to clear sections at your local grocery stores.
This made me laugh! I am the same way and my husband and family don’t get it-it is a crazy high when you save so much! I sometimes find baby food/cereal maked down 50-75% off and I am crazy excited! I always think that balloons should fall on me at the checkout when I save a ton-but so far it hasn’t happened… 🙂
We don’t have double coupons in Florida. However, I was able to get Enfamil infant formula on clearance at my local Publix (they are coming out with new packaging). It was 75% off and I had Enfamil checks so I was able to get 6 packages for free that I donated to my local women’s shelter.
I also look for packages with” 50% more free” or whatever amount they have decided to put in there for free. You just never know when they will be there! 🙂
Plus if you have a matching coupon, grocery stores often double them — drugstores and big-box stores do not.
I often find amazing deals in sections that are markdown. Love it!
Our King Soopers has multiple managers clearance sections throughout the store as well as doing these types of markdowns.
