How to Save Money on Your Monthly Energy Bill

Looking for easy ways to save money on your energy or electric bill? We polled our Facebook followers (and then again here!) and received so many creative cost-cutting ideas!

Check out these 35+ ways to save on your home energy bill!

1. Plug devices into power strips and turn off power strips when you’re not home or when you’re sleeping.
2. Use more energy efficient lightbulbs in all your lights and lamps.
3. When it’s time to replace an electrical appliance, look for one that’s energy saving — there might even be a tax deduction for this!
4. Plug in certain appliances only when you use them (like the coffee pot and toaster).
5. Line dry your laundry on sunny days (this will save money whether you have a gas or electric dryer).
6. Borrow or buy a Kilowatt meter to test which appliances and devices use the most electricity and unplug them when not in use.
7. Use a timer with a power strip to turn it on and off without needing to remember!
8. Keep your home a few degrees cooler in the winter and a few degrees warmer in the summer. (Add layers in the winter and wear lightweight clothing in the summer!)
9. Use heavy curtains and keep them drawn in the summer to keep extra heat from the sun out.
10. Close doors and vents to rooms you don’t use.
11. Use natural sunlight as much as possible (instead of turning lights on).
12. Wake up and go to bed with the sun to conserve using extra electricity.
13. Use appliances during non-peak times as you’ll get a lower rate during these hours.
14. Look into solar power energy (some can qualify to get solar panels for free through various programs).
15. Turn your hot water heater off except right before you plan to take showers/baths.
16. Use slow cookers in the summer instead of heating up your kitchen with the oven.
17. Check your bill every month to make sure you aren’t getting any upcharges or surcharges.
18. Call your company to see if you can negotiate a lower rate (it never hurts to ask!).
19. Change your AC filters regularly to keep it clean so the HVAC system doesn’t need to work as hard.
20. Use your fireplace or wood stove to heat your house during winter months.
21. Read with a book light.
22. Turn off unused breakers.
23. Use cold water to wash your clothes to save on your electricity bill.
24. Wear clothing 2 or 3 times before washing.
25. Open the door on your dishwasher during the dry cycle. The heat/steam that has accumulated while washing will dry your dishes.
26. Turn off lights when not in use.
27. Turn the heat down (or off) at night (depending on where you live).
28. If you have a programmable thermostat, set it to a schedule.
29. Open the windows to cool off the house when possible.
30. Cover windows and doors with plastic/blankets to keep your house warmer.
31. Boil water or steam up bathrooms for warmth.
32. Crack the oven door open after using it to warm the house.
33. Use flannel sheets on beds for extra warmth.
34. Put straw or snow around the base/foundation of the house.
35. Use a space heater.
36. Sleep with an electric blanket.
37. Drink warm drinks (tea, coffee, hot cocoa).
