I went to Aldi and Kroger last week — after three weeks of doing grocery pickup. It was so good to shop in-store again… even if I didn’t get that many great deals!
A lot of people had asked whether I had noticed grocery prices going up recently. I haven’t noticed many price increases at Kroger, but I was really shocked by how much prices had gone up at Aldi! I hadn’t been in maybe 3 months and so many item were $0.25 to $0.50 higher than they used to be!
In fact, I feel like some of the Aldi prices were higher than some Kroger regular prices and a lot of them were definitely higher than the Kroger sale prices!

But they did have a great deal on apples — $1.99 for a 3-lb. bag!

Here’s what I ended up getting. It was $48 (including tax) for all of this.

And then I ran by a Kroger store that I don’t usually shop at and go around $20 worth of items — including the Ground Turkey that was on sale for $2.49 each with the weekly digital deal.

I generally go to Aldi once a month. As of early October a few prices had gone up a little but not significantly. Hopefully I won’t get a surprise next time I go! A lot of Walmart items went up 10-25 cents and Kroger’s meat especially went up. The sale prices for beef and pork are definitely higher. I used to get big roasts from Sam’s Club and cut them up for the freezer. Now their beef is $1+ more a pound. I stretch meat but I have four boys whose appetites are growing. I think I’m going to have to adjust our grocery budget significantly soon :(.
Aldi’s prices here are fine compared to other grocery stores in the area. The one near me is the closest store of any kind to my house, even walking distance in a pinch, which counts for a lot.
We used to live within walking distance of Aldi and it was the best!
You’re right about Aldi. They are not a good deal in my area any more. Prices in most items are 20% more than a few months ago. Most of my shopping used to be at Aldi but no more. Costco, BJ’s and Walmart get most of my business.
I totally agree!
