I accidentally spent $167 more on groceries this week than I had planned on!!! Here’s what happened…
I went to place my Kroger delivery order yesterday. When I went to checkout, they offered me some great deals that were flash sales (you’ll usually get offered these if you choose to have your order delivered from the Kroger delivery truck).
One of those deals was on a roast. It said it was $15.99. That’s quite a bit more than I usually spend on meat for one meal, but I decided to splurge since I had the money in the budget.
I went to checkout and it said my total was $143 for all my groceries. I was excited because I’d gotten a lot of high quality meat and other things and was still under my $150 weekly budget!
But then my groceries got delivered this morning and instead of my total being around $143 (it usually varies a tiny bit depending upon whether they have everything in stock or need to substitute something), it was $315!!
What?!?
I went to look at my groceries and discovered that instead of the roast being $15.99 total, it was $15.99 a POUND and they had given me 10 1/2 pound roast!!
So instead of the roast being $15.99 like I thought, it was $167!!!!
I decided to live chat with a Kroger representative to ask if anything could be done since I really didn’t want to pay $167 for one roast.

They asked me multiple questions and asked me to send a screenshot of my original total that they’d sent via email after I placed my delivery order.
I expected maybe they’d give me some sort of refund.
Well, guess what??
After they asked me a series of questions and had me submit the screenshot, they refunded me the ENTIRE amount!
Yes, all $167 of it!! And I get to keep the roast!!!!

This is just a reminder that it never hurts to ask. Be kind. Be polite. Don’t expect or demand. But do be firm and confident and ask if you got overcharged or if something is not right with an order.
You never know what might happen — you just might get a $167 roast completely free. (I feel weird even eating such an expensive item, but I’m going to try to make it last for as many meals as possible!)
P.S. I just saw “roast” on the flash sale advertisement. After it arrived, I discovered it was a ribeye roast. I didn’t even know what this was (yes, can you tell I typically only buy less expensive cuts of meat?) but apparently it’s really amazing meat and you can cut it into steaks and make it go really far. Now I just have to get brave enough to figure out how to cook a type of roast I never have before! I’ve heard it’s not the kind you just plop into the crockpot to bake like I usually do with roasts!!

I have learned not to order on Tuesdays for Wednesday deliveries. My charge was $73 over, and thankfully I had taken a screenshot of the original charge. They figured out what happened and said that the coupons start every Wednesday, so even though I was charged for the right amount on Tuesday, the coupons didn’t apply since it was delivered Wednesday. Then it charged my debit the $73 extra–yikes! I shared what a concern that was, especially because it wasn’t like they make that known in any way. Coupons should not be applied if they can’t be used. Thankfully they reimbursed me by applying a credit for that amount and a bit more for my next order. I hope they have corrected that. I still use their services for other delivery days. 😃
I have always found that Kroger has excellent customer service from their toll free number. YMMV with in store, depending on the kind of day the employee is having! Ha ha But I always do my reviews and mention those employees that are doing a good job.
Awesome what a deal
My mom’s secret to tender, juicy roasts is instant coffee! She puts it in the oven at 375* for about 30 minutes, covered. Then she drains the water off, puts fresh water in, coats the top well with instant coffee, covers it with the lid again, turns the oven down to 350* and finishes it in an hour or so, depending on the size of roast. My sisters and I do the same, even though some of us don’t drink coffee! You can’t taste the coffee at all and the meat is amazing!
So interesting! Thanks for sharing! Does it work on a ribeye roast, too?
My mom did all roasts that way. Most of them were about 2 inches thick and that might make a difference.
Cut it into steaks. We are cattle ranchers. Believe me, you won’t be disappointed. Cut and freeze your steaks.
Thank you for the recommendation!
Wrap each of those steaks in wax paper, you don’t want freezer burn to happen.
Dying laughing! Thanks for sharing. That’s something I totally would have done. Love Kroger customer service; I’ve never had an issue with refunds on messed up items. Enjoy the treat of such nice meat! (I have no idea how to cook it!)
I’m glad it could make you laugh!
A ribeye roast is a prime rib roast. Find a recipe for prime rib.
Thank you!
NO NO NO! Not the crockpot! 😅
🙂 :). I promise I won’t!
This will make you great prime rib! Your family will enjoy it. There are plenty of recipes out there.
I’m excited to try and hope I don’t mess it up!
Wow! That’s awesome they refunded. I picked one up when they had them on sale for $5.77/pound in Arizona two weeks ago. I cut the bone off (beef ribs or you can throw into instapot/crockpot and cook off bone). I then cut mine into 1-1.5 in ribeye steaks and grilled (got about 7 really nice steaks).
Oh! That sounds like you got a GREAT deal!
I had the same thing happen. So glad you posted this because I never checked my final receipt…I hope they are as compassionate to me because I can’t afford 140 lbs of meat.
That is prime rib and that’s an awesome deal lol. We always smoke ours whole for Christmas and then use the leftovers (sliced real thin) to make Philly cheesesteaks.
Yummy!
Wow! That is crazy expensive meat!! I’m glad you got your refund! If you ever have an issue with a delivery order or order pick up, you can also go to the online order receipt and request a refund there. If there is ever an issue, I click refund and put the reason down, and I usually always get it. I haven’t had to do any online chat or anything. They have been great!
Yes, I tried that first but because the amount was so high, I had to talk to an actual representative. 🙂 Which I’m not surprised by at all!
Wow!! Enjoy! I love Kroger delivery too!
America’s Test Kitchen and Alton Brown both have great recipes for cooking a ribeye roast (also called a standing rib roast). Don’t be intimidated! You have a great cut of meat so you all should enjoy the unexpected treat!
Thank you so much for the recommendations!
Take the roast back to Kroger and ask the butcher to cut it into steaks. Ribeye is a heavily marbled meat. Steaks are the best. It’s really known as prime rib.
I don’t think I’ve ever eaten it before!
Publix website has a recipe (may be with holiday recipes).
Thank you!
lol! Oh Goodness…😳 Bless you!
Now THAT’S a hunk of meat 😅
Enjoy! Be Blessed
It’s massive!!
Wow! Nice!
Ribeye roasts are delicious cooked on the grill. We cook one every year for Christmas. Leftovers are divided into some sort of freezer containers based on the number of servings required per meal.
Good for you! Enjoy that delicious cut of beef.
