At our house, we love to have homemade smoothies in the Summertime. Not only are they yummy and refreshing–especially on a hot Summer day!–but they can also be quite frugal. Yes, really, smoothies can be frugal!
Almost any kind of fruit can be used in a smoothie, but berries are especially good. During the Summer months when berries are in season and plentiful, the sales on them are usually abundant. Buy a little extra each week and wash, chop, and freeze them to have for later and you’ll save a bundle and stock your freezer with a nice variety of berries to use in smoothies for a few months to come.
I like to spread the berries on baking sheets after I’ve washed and chopped them and then stick them in the freezer until they are frozen. Once frozen, I transfer them from the baking sheets to freezer bags. This method prevents all of your berries forming into one big clump in the freezer bag and makes it much easier for you to get out a cup or two at a time to add to your blender for a smoothie.
Another fruit which is a must-have in smoothies is bananas. Our stores sell bananas which are past their prime for a very reduced price. I buy these up and we eat what we can the first day and then chop and freeze the rest to use in smoothies and banana bread. This is a much more cost-effective way to add bananas to your smoothies and you can’t tell that a banana was a bit overripe if it is in a smoothie!
Since I love experimenting in the kitchen, I find smoothies to be a great way to use up some of those odds and ends of produce from the refrigerator and freezer. From that little bit of leftover juice or yogurt which wasn’t used for breakfast the day before to the spinach from the garden which you have in abundance, almost anything can go into a smoothie so long as you put enough other things in it to “hide” it!
The other day, I used the items pictured above to whip up some strawberry smoothies: some of the YoBaby yogurt, frozen strawberries, milk, and some Santa Cruiz juice.
I always begin by adding in the frozen fruit and any fresh fruit, then yogurt or milk, and then liquids (either milk or juice). I add more liquid if needed and sweeten it with honey or sugar if it needs it (most of the time, we don’t add sweetener as the fruit is plenty enough!).
And the girls just gobble it up!
We love strawberry smoothies, but another family favorite is our Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie recipe which is posted here. I made it up on a whim one day and we all decided it was a keeper! If you’re a little more adventuresome, you might also try Green Smoothies. We’ve made these before and no one seemed to even notice the spinach in them!
Would you like to try your hand at making smoothies? Just for fun, I’m giving away a Smoothie Kit on my blog today complete with yummy smoothie recipes, a small Hamilton-Beach blender (shown above), and Bone Health t-shirts.
May was National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month and the Milk Bone Health Program was going to give away this kit then, but since I had a baby in May, I’m a little behind here. But I thought it’d be fun to still give away this kit–especially since it’s a wonderful time of year to be making smoothies.
To enter to win this Smoothie Kit, just leave a comment on this post in the next 24 hours. I’ll randomly choose a winner once this giveaway is closed.
The girls, enjoying their smoothies and sporting their “I {love} strong bones” t-shirts.
Yum, gotta LOVE smoothies!

I love smoothies but don’t make them very often because my blender is wearing out. Would love to try out a new blender!
We also love smoothies! One of our new favorites: vanilla yogurt, frozen banana, Tang, and milk. “Mum! Mum!” is what my 1 1/2 year old says!
I tried to do smoothies for breakfast but i am no where near as creative as you all, i was following directions and they were calling for things that i had never heard of!

Hi
Thanks for the chance to win a blender. V don’t have one n so use the one at my friends house(can b awkward tho”). I have found 5.5 lbs bags of frozen berries during the summer at $3.99/bag which I think is a good deal n one bag lasts for a while, too.
I feel silly for saying this, but I have never even THOUGHT of making smothies for my family. But, wow….what a great idea! Like you said, you can pack them pretty much full of anything and they are a yummy, easy-to-make treat. I also love the idea of slicing up bananas that are about to “go bad” and freezing them for later use. Again, thanks for the great ideas!
I love smoothies!
I’d love to win this, my blender is about 20 years old and is on its last leg.
Smoothies sound delicious! I can’t think of anything better with 90 degree temps already this morning. 🙂
Thanks for the tip on freezing the fruit. I will try that to avoid the massve hunk of fruit I have gotten in the past.
I have been planning to look up a green smoothie recipe all week. Going to try it out at my moms this week. 🙂
I could really use a new blender!

My daughter (and the whole family) loves smoothies so much that she has requested them for two birthday in row. Sadly our blender is on it’s way out. Mommy would love to get a free one.

Smoothies are a must in FL!
I have added smoothies to my breakfast menu during my pregnancy (I’m 32 weeks now). They were a great way to get some protein, calcium, and fruit into my diet even when I was rushed in the morning to get to my job as a teacher. I saved money by purchasing the fruit from the farmers market through a co-op when it is in season (a whole flat of strawberries/blueberries or a basket of peaches goes a long way!). I was also able to get my husband who is not usually a breakfast person to drink them, with an added scoop of protein mix.
We would love to start making smoothies!
Thank you!
Brad Malone

Smoothies are the best in the summer. I worked at a smoothie shop once and my favorite was the strawberry smoothie. Ingredients were: frozen vanilla yogurt, orange sherbet, orange juice, half a banana, frozen strawberries and a spoonful of pinapple chunks. The pineapple really adds the last punch of flavor and zing to it.
I have really been wanting one of these but can’t seem to make the splurge! I hope I win.

We have (almost) 17 mo old triplets and are just beginning to find new ways to get them hydrated and enjoy what they are drinking. They LOVE fruit, so I think smoothies would be the “fun” treat and keep them hydrated at the same time.
Thanks for a great blog! We love it!
We love pumpkin smoothies. You just use bottled or canned pumpkin, ice, milk or water & powdered milk, and sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger to taste, with a dash of cloves. It tastes like pumpkin pie (if you add enough sugar and milk), and is very frugal, since we use pumpkin that I bottled last fall, when I bought pumpkins for $1 a piece after Halloween. You can also freeze the pumpkin if you don’t have a pressure canner, but do have enough freezer space.
I would love to start making smoothies for my family!
Awesome giveaway. Count me in!!! jessi92982@aol.com
I LOVE how you can put so much “good stuff” in a smoothie (kefir, protein powder…..) and they always turn out great!!

Before I jumped on the coupon and frugality bandwagon, I used to go to the local Planet Smoothie every morning for my favorite smoothie…The Hangover-over (not sure why it was named that). Nothing more than strawberries, bananas, and vanilla frozen yogurt. This would be great for me to make smoothies at home and get hung up on the Hangover-over all over again. I sure do miss them!
Love your blog!
These look yummy
Great smoothie recipes!
Thanks for the reminder that you can freeze the bananas. I know, not rocket science, but I always think I need to use them up for the smoothies just as they’re starting to overripen, then once they’re too ripe, they get chucked or used for banana bread…eventually. But hello! Freeze them in chunks, Holly!! Sometimes the obvious escapes us! Or me…
I’ve been meaning to try the green smoothie, so thanks for the reminder!
Yay! Smoothies…Yummy. My girls and I would LOVE it!
Thanks so much for all you do—your site is awesome!
Awesome giveaway!! My kids loved the free smoothy last weekend for flipflop day and it would be fun to make some at the house!
Great giveaway!
Mmm! We love smoothies! I need to start freezing bananas like you do.
Adorable pixs! Thanks for the recipe. Smoothies are a favorite in our house too. Not to sure about spinach. Yuck!!!
Oh, I would love this kit. My blender is so old that it struggles chopping frozen stuff. Please pick me.
I hope I win this. I am a big fan of smoothies. Have you ever tried using cooled green tea as the liquid in smoothies you make? I read that idea once, and love it. It is a a nice way to add more antioxidants, as well as more liquid without all of the extra calories.
We love smoothies too. I’ve always wanted to try your peanut butter banana smoothie, but I always tend to forget about it until after they are made.
I just got some bananas today from Kroger on clearance! Some even organic and put them in the freezer. I am learning so much from you!!
Smoothies….yum!
We love smoothies. They are much cheaper at home than going out to get them.
We love smoothies and I often wish for a smaller blender to pull out when the smoothie urge hits! We have a great blender but it’s part of the huge Bosch machine which takes up so much counter space when all I really need for smoothies is a little thing! Can’t wait to see who gets this refreshing give-away. =)
My kids love smoothies! I never thought of chopping bananas and freezing, that’s a great idea! Thanks!
Freezing them on a pan b4 putting them in a bag is a great idea. I’m going to try this next time!

I honestly would never have thought of putting spinach in a smoothie! I may have to try that out!
We love smoothies! I like your idea of buying the fruit in season then freezing it. When I read that I thought “Duh! Why haven’t I thought of that before?!” Thanks for all your tips!

Smoothies are great! But… I don’t have a blender! 🙂
I love smoothies!
Your girls look so cute in their shirts–and they really look like they enjoy the smoothies. Never hurts to have your kids liking something healthy, especially when it doesn’t “taste” healthy!

Wow! Those looked delicious. I think we will make some for snack tonight. I am also going to try and make your muffins tonight. Once the house cools down a bit. Thanks for your wonderful blog.
My dear son loves to make smoothies. We are limited though because we have a latex allergy in our family and bananas have become an allergy problem because they are related to the latex family. We use lots of berries.
I would love to win-the Peanut Butter smoothie sounds yummy!
Please enter me in the contest.
My husband and I used to make smoothies everyday. I would love to get back into it, and this time we could make it more cost effective with your tips! Thanks.

We love smoothies at our house! We might just have to try your Peanut Butter Banana smoothie! I bet that my kids will love it!
Yum! I love the idea of cutting up bananas and freezing them! MUCH better than freezing the banana whole! Thanks for sharing this tip.
I love smoothies! =)

I have always wanted a smoothie maker!
I love smoothies and my little one just started drinking them. This would be great!
Your girls are adorable! I used to be the smoothie queen, but got out of the habit. I’m trying to get back on track with my healthy eating so your post comes at the perfect time – thanks!
Thanks for the recipe! I’d love to win as I don’t even own a blender but I’m thinking about trying to make one in my food processor!
I enjoy spinach in my smoothies too, you can’t taste it at all and a great healthy addition!
Those look delicious!
I love smoothies. They are great for an afternoon “snack” to get you from lunch to dinner without the “letdown” time or that craving for something but your not sure what.
I use fruit, fruit juice or yogurt, AnyWhey Protein powder or cottage cheese (actually can’t tell its in there but makes it really creamy) and ice.
Smoothies are soooo good in summer! Strawberry is my fave, blueberry a close second
Yum! We love smoothies here at our house!
A tip for green smoothies: Freeze the spinach before adding it, and the green doesn’t show much (especially in darker smoothies like blueberry), for those who object to the green color. Also, ground organic flaxseed is easy to add for essential fatty acids.
we love smoothies! i miss my girls being the age yours are!
Cold smoothies go great with hot FL afternoons!
One of my favourite things to do is make fresh banana ice cream. Freeze thin-ish chunks of banana, throw in a blender with a little milk and blend until smooth! It tastes like AMAZING banana ice cream and has like two calories if you use skim milk (I do and it tastes rad!). No sugar or anything needed because the bananas do more than nicely for it.
Count me in!
Homemade smoothies are one of my favorites!
Thanks for the post! A favorite in my house is kale and banana. Smoothies are a great way to throw in some nutritional value!
Your idea on smoothies sounds great i would love to be able to try them out, but i don’t have a blender so i thought i would give a this chance a whirl!!!!

My family loves smoothies as well. Definitely beats paying for them at Jamba Juice!
I’ve been having a lot of smoothies while pregnant…especially as it heats up here in Texas!! Usually it’s either a protein smoothie (rice milk, protein powder, milled flax seed, and frozen strawberries) or a green smoothie (orange juice, two handfuls of fresh spinach, and two handfuls of frozen mixed fruit). Yummy…and a great way to get in that extra protein and fruit my midwife wants me to have!!
My husband and I love smoothies! Strawberry is also our favorite. 🙂
I’ve been craving a frappucchino, but a smoothie actually sounds better and would be a lot cheaper!
What a great giveaway. I also like your suggestion for freezing the chopped fruit individually first – I’m going to try that. kkhill (at) swbell (dot) net

YUM! I love smoothies. I’m hooked on green smoothies right now. A friend shared the idea and it is a great way to get more veggies in. I have an older blender so it takes a while for mine to blend up the frozen fruit, but I love to use berries of all kinds, pineapple, bananas, and spinach for the greenies! Thanks for sharing!

Your blog gives me a bunch of great tips that I plan on using when I get married and have kids! But for right now I’m a single career girl waiting (patiently 🙂 for God to send me the right man, but I’ll be ready to roll in the kitchen when my lucky day/man comes!

Thanks!

I would have never thought to freeze bananas for smoothies. I do puree and freeze mangoes though when they are on sale. I LOVE making mango strawberry banana smoothies. I usually add some Arbonne protein powder and fiber shakes in too for even more benefits. 🙂
Thanks for a wonderful blog! And thanks for the Peanut Butter and Banana recipe! Yum!
Your freeze-things-from-chicken-to-fruit-on-a-baking-tray-so-they-don’t-clump-together-in-the-freezer method is absolutely brilliant and has changed my life. On the one hand, I’m smacking myself in the head for not thinking of it myself – but on the other, am glad to have come across it. Manyt hings!
Yay, smoothies!
I make a smoothie for my husband’s breakfast about every other day! He never has time for breakfast so I whip one up in a to-go cup. We’ve just about worn out our blender!!

Our blender died…or part of it did and we are in need of a new one. This would be perfect timing.
Have you ever had the bottom of a blender just stop spinning? This is our problem. It is stuck, like can’t turn the blades at all stuck. The motor works, the glass is perfect and this little disc with the blades is stuck.
Hope we get a new one 🙂
Heather

We are smoothie people almost every night! Goes really well with popcorn 🙂
My husband and I love smoothies and used to make them all the time when we were first dating/engaged. For some reason we stopped when we had kids – probably had something to do with not sleeping and not being able to find time for anything, even going to the bathroom (our first was a demanding little guy) :-). I’d love to get back into smoothie making – it’s a great way to get some great fruits into a toddler!
Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

We love smoothies too and recently came across a recipe for homemade yogurt in your crockpot! If anyone else is interested in this, the recipe can be found at http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/2008/10/you-can-make-yogurt-in-your-crockpot.html . Thank you “crockpot lady”!
