Since so many of you have been enjoying Gretchen’s grocery shopping trips, I asked her if she’d be interested in sharing her weekly big grocery trip and menu plan from time to time.
If you find this helpful, would you leave a comment or click on “Like” button in the top righthand corner of this post. That lets us know that these are posts you’d like to see more of. 🙂
And don’t worry, I’ll still keep posting some of my shopping trips and my weekly menu plans. My sister, Gretchen, is a lot more organized than me and on a tighter budget, so I thought that this would be especially helpful to some of you who may be in a similar season of life or like to see a menu plan on a budget all laid out in a step-by-step fashion!
Local Health Food Store
My first stop was our local Health Food store. We love their oranges so I always buy them there. I was hoping they would have some great deals on produce like usual, but I only found one mark-down. 🙁

Gretchen, watch the expiration date on the contact solution. My husband and I spent a month this winter fighting what we thought was pink eye. It turned out that our contact solution, which expired the month before, was the culprit. Once I tossed it and opened a fresh bottle, our symptoms went away.
Gretchen says
Wow! Thanks for the tip. Now I’m going to have to go check the dates on the ones I bought. I didn’t even know they had expiration dates.

Here in SC our milk at Aldi and at Costco is over $3.00 a gallon and powdered milk is even more expensive.
Laura says
Unfortunately, I can’t relate to this post at all. $.99 for strawberries? The lowest I have seen in my area is $2.50. I live in New Hampshire. I shop at Market Basket which is the least expensive grocery store in the area. Most of the prices listed here are much lower than I could ever find. Not sure how many kids the author has, but I have a hard time spending $100/week on my family of 5. I will keep reading to get new ideas, though. Thanks for the post!

I’m amazed at the prices. Our milk is $4.00 a gallon! I’m in Norman, Oklahoma. I’m unemployed and trying to start an ebay business so I’m really interested in some cheap ideas for groceries and meals! Thanks!

I like the shopping trip and deal posts more than some of the other style posts. They are all helpful, but I am glad to see more of these types of posts.

What a great mark down price on contact solution! I wear gas permeable contacts so it is rare that I ever find this on sale. If I do, I snap up bottles like you do.
breana says
Hey something we buy to keep cost down is at Wal-Mart there is a great value bread for .88 it’s right by the 1.oo gv bread. Also there is one brand of toilet paper Wal-Mart carries that you can get six rolls for .98 out goes fast at our store so we try to check often. I love your ideas our problem is cutting down meat. If I can figure a way to satisfy everyone I will be set!
Kristi says
I like this post.

An Aldi note: both baking powder and cocoa powder are seasonal items there and are only available from about Thanksgiving until Easter. I guess that there aren’t enough people cooking from scratch to make it worth the year-long shelf space 🙁 I’m currently buying up cocoa powder before it’s all gone.
Susan says
Just thought I’d chime in here on milk prices … I think that is one item where you can save a lot of money by just cutting back. Really, kids (and adults too for that matter) don’t need all that much milk.
My family consists of just my 12-yo daughter and I, and we consume about a half gallon of milk a week for both of us. $6/month total for milk, if that. We used to drink a lot more than that, but a numbers of years ago when money was particularly tight and I was looking for ways to reduce my grocery bill, this was one area where I decided we could easily cut back. It just took some changing of our habits, and it truly was not all that hard. Instead of reaching for milk whenever we were thirsty, we switched to good ole’ tap water. (our tap water is good here; I realize it’s different in other areas).
We’re not cereal eaters, so I suppose that makes a difference in milk consumption. Then again, dry packaged cereal is another item that can be given up as a cos-saving measure.

Love this post please have more like this. Around here in Western New York milk at regular grocery stores is about $3 – $4. I learned a trick though for my area if you go to the Gas Station like 7-11 name brand milk is $2.69 a gallon. So when I fill up my tank I go in and pick up milk for the week as well. Just this little thing really helps my budget out.

I would definitely like to see more of Gretchen’s posts! Though we eat a little differently than her family (mostly gluten-free/paleo), I love to see how she makes the most of what she has. Her deals, attitude and creativity totally inspire me! Thanks, Gretchen!
Gretchen says
Thanks, Carrie! You’re so sweet.
Colleen says
Carrie,
I would love to see how you shop I just found out two weeks ago that I can’t eat any gluten anymore and my family does not want to go gulten free with me. I was so disappointed when I went to Harris Teeter the other day and only saw about 1/3 of the products that they said they had that was gulten free and the prices almost made me say I’ll live with the pain. I did start to cry because I could not even find a cracker that was gluten free. Any help that you can give me would be great. you can email if you like [email protected] Thank You

Just e-mailed you 😉

Yes! I love this! Way to go, Gretchen! I will really appreciate these.
I was super excited this week as a store near us (Suburb of Chicago) has California apricots for .99/lb! I need to make jam as we are giving 4 oz jars of jam as our wedding favors this August, and when I called to special order a large amount…they gave me an even larger discount! I grabbed 50 lbs of PERFECT JUICY apricots for $31.00!!! Apricot Vanilla Jam from Brandy at The Prudent Homemaker is cooking right now! 🙂
Laura says
Congrats on that! And best wishes for your wedding. Sounds like it will be amazing :). Doing my sun dance for you now, lol!
Kate says
Aw, thank you Laura! We are so thrilled to begin life together! And I am currently making labels for our jars that have our names and the wedding date, along with the flavor of jam and then “Spread the Love” (because it’s jam!) Ha– it’s so cheesy, but I don’t care!
Carole says
Last week Aldi’s had milk for $ .99 a gallon here in central Illinois. I didn’t need that much , but bought it and am making a lot of pudding and other things that use milk. This was an exception as it’s usually more than that.

I was looking for baking powder and marshmallows at my local Aldi. They, too, said they were both seasonal items. Kind of frustrating as Aldi has the best prices anywhere near me. I guess I need to stock up when I do see them.

Thanks Gretchen. Your post helped me with my CVS shopping trip this week. I can remember reading your blog couple years ago, and i really enjoyed it. I look forward to next week post.

Love the post! Keep them coming. I love to get new ideas and recipes from other people’s menu plans, too.
And I am completely jealous of all of those who are in areas where the price of milk, eggs, etc…at Aldi are so fabulous! Our Aldi milk is $3.19 a gallon! And the eggs were recently $1.59 a dozen, although they have just gone back down a little bit. The best we see around here for a sale on milk is $2.88-2.97 a gallon.
Dana says
I may resort to powdered milk! a gal of milk is $3.29 the cheapest, live nearby Charlotte NC. I just need a dairy cow.
Gretchen says
See my above comment about finding milk marked down. Most stores do this on a weekly bases – you just have to ask what day they mark down their dairy products. 🙂
Dana says
Thank you Gretchen, I am going to inquire.
Amy says
Wow- I never realized how expensive milk is across the country! I live in a suburb of Phoenix, and I pay $1.76/gallon at Winco.
Sarah says
Funny, must be an NC thing. I am near Raleigh. And I was wrong, the Aldi milk price is $3.59/gallon.
Dana says
Very true, we must get imported milk and pay the big bucks! Cheapest used to be $2.59 and that was a sale price at Aldi, it’s occasionally $2.99 at Walgreens and when it goes on sale like that I buy and freeze
Colleen says
I live by RockyMt. NC and milk here is 3.99 of 2% and 5.99 for D. Our Sam’s Club it was 3.99 just like the stores when I was there last. I have not been to our Aldi’s yet since I have not been here that long and don’t know where it is yet. I think I better find it soon. I did not know that you could freeze milk. I think I will be trying that. Thank You
august says
We are in Hickory, NC and it’s $4.25 at WalMart. I’m lucky if I find it for under $3.99. None of our stores do clearance sales or anything. It’s really upsetting to because our family of 3 goes through 7 gallons of milk a WEEK!
Dana says
It appears the carolinas just have bad prices on milk huh?? I’m on the other side of town, live in SC, (ft mill area) work in CLT. Milk would go on sale at Harris Teeter for around $2.49/gal about 1.5 year ago, but since then I never see it for less than $3.29. Not sure what happened in our area. We drink less milk than we used to but with two kids we go through about 1 gal/week so it’s not a major expense like it used to be when the kids were younger.

I love reading these posts from Gretchen too! I sometimes get new recipe ideas from Crystal’s menu so I am sure I will get some from Gretchen too. I went to Fred Meyer tonight and forgot to redeem my free yogurt and Simple truth bar coupon. 🙁 I have a local discount grocery store that I love to shop since we don’t have an Aldi here. I was able to pick up four heads of Romaine lettuce for $1, 6 cucumbers for $1 and two packages of strawberries for $1. I just love it when I can get cheap produce.
Laura says
Oooooh, what store is that? I live in the Seattle area and would love to find a great place like that. We just had a Grocery Outlet open in Bellevue and I thought I had died and gone to heaven–great deals, not on everything, but enough to make a trip when I am in the area.
Thanks for sharing!
Shelly says
The store is called Everyday Deals. It is in Portland, OR. I shop the one on 146th and Stark street. But they have another smaller store on 172nd and Division street too.
We have two Grocery Outlet store by us and I love to shop there too. 🙂

I am loving these posts also. I am currently trying to spend only $50 this month on our groceries – cleaning out our pantry and freezers. I loved the great deals at Aldi this week on fresh fruit!

You can regrow romaine lettuce but putting the root stem end down in about a half inch or so of water ina bowl. I haven’t tried it but it was on our news. I have done green onions regrowing in a mason jar with water. 🙂

I live in Indiana and our Aldi’s is having milk at $1.99 too. I also love these post. I have kind of gotten off track menu planning but need to get back to it. Also, Crystal, just wondering if you are willing to share how much you are budgeting now for groceries?

We take out $50/week for groceries, but I also supplement with some things from Swagbucks, etc. so it’s a little ambiguous.

Where do you live? I am totally jealous that you get milk for $1.99…it averages $4 by me $3-$3.50 occasionally on sale:(
Crystal says
Aldi has been having milk for $1.99 recently! I’m not sure if that’s just in Kansas, but definitely call your local Aldi store if you have one!
Angie says
I haven’t checked the price at Aldi in my area recently, but I believe it was around $2.49 a gallon about a year ago. I live in an expensive area where 1.99 a gallon is unheard of. I usually get my milk for 2.59 a gallon at BJs (where it was only 2.07 a gallon a year or two ago :/) or on sale at 2.79-2.99 at the gas station or grocery store.
The Aldi’s in my area isn’t convenient for me. The extra gas would negate the savings, and I don’t like their produce. I once bought bananas there and they were spotty (under the peel) the day I took them home.
I need to move to the mid-west. So jealous.
HilaryT says
We also live in Kansas and the milk at Aldi and Sam’s Club has been $1.99 for a few months now. Before tht it was pretty high. Not sure why the dropped it – but I’ll take it!
Abby says
The milk price is what struck me most about this post! The best price I get for milk here in Mississippi is $3.44 at Sam’s, which is 40 minutes away; it’s $4.13 at Walmart. If prices were lower, I could easily shave $15-$20 a month off our grocery budget.
I do enjoy this type of post, though! I love the menu plans and I love the shopping trips. Combining it all into one is a fun idea!
Karen says
I live in Missouri too and I’m pretty sure they have some sort of weird legal thing going on to keep milk prices high. I know milk coupons are illegal here. I find Aldi to always have the best milk prices but still always above $3.
I agree, I like these types of posts too. I’m competitive so it pushes me to see how much more I can lower my own costs!
Gretchen says
I would suggest finding out when your local store marks down their expiring dairy products. If I go on that day (it varies from store to store), I can always find milk marked down to $1-$2 per gallon. I only buy milk at Aldi when I can’t find milk marked down. My store usually marks down milk when it’s about 4-5 days from it’s expiration date so it will last us for the week.
Susan says
Wow, the stores in my area tend to only mark the milk down 1 – 2 days before the expiration date.
Erin says
We are also in Kanas, but our Aldi milk prices went up to over $3/gallon 🙁 Miss those 1.99/gallon days!
Sheila Modine says
I love the shopping trip posts and having a variety is great! I really need to cut my grocery budget back. I need to do better with the coupons I have and have a better idea of price comparisons between the stores around here. We haven’t been here for a year yet, but I’m still adjusting to the stores here, what is the best priced, and sales tax on groceries. I prefer to just shop at one place instead of driving around, but the stores here are smaller and don’t always have what I need. So I am having to go to multiple stores.
Crystal says
Agree with the others–would love to know more about this person. I, too, really like these posts
Crystal says
She’s my sister. 🙂 You can read a little more about her here: https://moneysavingmom.com/2013/05/gretchens-dillons-shopping-trip-this-week-spent-32-96-out-of-pocket.html
Rebecca says
I like this kind of stuff, but I’m confused. How did you cook those meals, b/c most of it you didn’t buy that week at the store. To get most of the ingredients you listed for this week’s meals would be much more than $35.
The Prudent Homemaker says
She probably bought them before and froze them. I have a $100 a month budget for 9 people but some things I only buy once a year. For example, my family eats 75 pounds of oats a year. I haven’t bought any oats since sometime last year when I bought all 75 pounds. I buy turkey and hams on sale at Thanksgiving and that is most of our meat for the year (though I bought some chicken last month for .18 a pound and froze it to use throughout the year).
Tia Robertson says
Wait… $0.18/lb for chicken?!?!? I’m packing my things now and moving to where you are!! The cheapest I’ve ever purchased it was $0.99/lb four years ago!!
Now I can’t find it for less than $1.79 and that’s buying it 40 lbs at a time through Zaycon!!! WOW!!! 🙂
The Prudent Homemaker says
Tia,
The store had a one-day sale (they sent out an email an hour before the store opened; I have never seen them do that before) for .49 a pound chicken (it was already on sale for .99, which was a great price here). Then there was a $5 off $25 purchase coupon in the store’s ad. I also had rewards points from the store; after 500 you can “cash out” for $5 or more if you have more points; it goes to the nearest hundred; I had 632 points, so I cashed 600 in for a $6 off coupon (you have to do that online before you go to the store, and then you can apply it there). The store gives 1 point per dollar spent, and the points expire every year in the fall. I did not spend $632, however, at that store in the last year. I spent much, much less. They gave triple points at Thanskgiving and Christmas on items, and I bought turkeys and hams on sale from that store. Then they had an email survey that gifted me another 250 point (I’ve never seen that offered before, so I took it).
When I went it for the .49 a pound chicken, it took my $5 coupon off twice on accident. It NEVER lets you do a coupon accidentally; it always tells you you can only use it once. I let someone know but they couldn’t fix it (there are no cashiers at this store; it’s all self-serve and there is only 1 employee out front in the store) and they figured it took it off the regular .99 price (for which it would have qualified; you can use it twice if you have $50 worth of merchandise, which I did before the one-day special deal was applied). I used my $6 in points as well, and that brought it down to .18 a pound. Super amazing deal and I’m glad I got it!
But it’s not a regular price around here for chicken by any means 🙂 I’m glad I checked my email that day before they opened!
Gretchen says
I don’t buy meat every week because one pound of ground beef usually last 2 weeks for us and a bag of frozen chicken lasts 2-3 weeks. (I always only use half or a third of the meat in any recipe.) I grind a lot of my own flour (a 50 lb bag from Azure Standard costs around $20). And any time there is a sale on pasta, spaghetti sauce, cheese, or staple ingredients, I stock up. As you can see this week I used $12 from our grocery budget to buy 6 bottles of contact solution that were really cheap – but now we will be stocked up for several months. 🙂
Anonymous says
Oh man…. we are a meat heavy family here. We can go through 2 lbs of beef a day around here and a pack of frozen chicken 3-4 lbs will last us 2 days tops.
Ann says
I love this! Please keep them coming!
Dana says
Love these post!
Terri says
Maybe I missed something but where is the chicken and ground beef? I didn’t see where they were purchased?
The Prudent Homemaker says
I’m guessing she purchased them on sale a different week and froze them. I certainly don’t buy everything that I eat all in one week that week; if I did, I’d sure be in trouble this month! I haven’t gone grocery shopping at all this month for my family of 9.
Sarah says
I only buy meat once a month or so and freeze it. I spend about $60 a week on groceries average. Some weeks more if I need meat, and some weeks I won’t go shopping at all. It averages out at the end of the month, but I don’t spend the same each week.
Terri says
Oh!! Duh!! I should have figured that out. Thanks ladies, LOL!!

Milk 1.99 thats awesome! Best I can seem to find in our area is 2.50 at Costco.

Jodi says
That’s the first thing I thought was holy smokes, milk for a 1.99! I live in Phila and it’s 4.09! I need to move wherever she lives!
Debra C says
I live in Kansas and I can get milk for 1.99. It’s been a while since I went to Aldi, but they usually have it cheaper than all the grocery stores. Dillons seems to run semi-regular sales on milk so that I can get a gallon for 1.99 there. But the big thing I found is that Sam’s Club has it for 1.99. So if it’s not on sale at Dillons, I just make a quick run to Sam’s for milk. I know not everyone has a card for Sam’s, but if you have one, check out the milk and see what it’s running.
Heather says
In Georgia it’s 2.50 at Aldi, but I can find it on sale very rarely at other stores for 1.99.

Gretchen, thanks for sharing these posts! Wow, $35 for a weeks worth of groceries is great! I used to shop the sales a different stores and would save a lot that way, but we recently moved where there is only 1 grocery store chain (plus Walmart and Aldi), I started shopping at Aldi and have pretty much cut our grocery bill in half.
Jessica says
I like these posts! I’m trying to eat from the pantry for a while to use up some stockpiled goods plus I like bargain shopping 🙂
Kristen | The Frugal Girl says
Isn’t it weird that baking powder is a seasonal item at Aldi? But they carry baking soda year round. You’d think the demand for both would be equal!
Kelly says
I find it odd, too! I searched for it a few weeks ago and ended up having to buy it on my regular grocery store trip instead. I’m glad it isn’t just my Aldi that doesn’t have it right now!
Abbygail Mendoza says
I guess “normal” people only bake around the holidays 😉
Rachel says
Cocoa is also a ‘seasonal’ as in holiday season item at Aldi. Stock up over the holidays!
The Prudent Homemaker says
I was giggling about this today when I pulled out my baking soda to bake crackers (while my 4 loaves of bread were rising). I use baking soda several times a week!
Heather says
I know!!! I guess it’s because people use baking soda for deodorizing their fridge as well. The one nice thing about baking powder being seasonal is – it went on clearance and I bought it for 49 cents a can! I bought all they had left!
Sarah says
I had the same thing happen this time last year, Aldi said it was seasonal, I thought it was funny because even if you might not bake as much in the summer, my pancake recipe calls for 4T in each batch!
