Queen Bee Coupons shares how they got a free washer from their utility company:
When we moved into our house nearly five years ago it came with an older washer and dryer set. Although ugly, loud and inefficient – the washer and dryer worked just fine. We sometimes discussed buying a new set, but couldn’t justify the cost if the ones we had worked just fine.
Last month, my electricity company, Puget Sound Energy (PSE) reached out to me and told me about their PSE appliance replacement program – replacing old refrigerators and clothes washers – for FREE!
Seems too good to be true, but customers who are Puget Sound Energy electric customers (those living in Washington cities like Olympia, Kent, Bellingham, Bellevue etc.) and who have a clothes washer that is really old, like 17 years old or older, can exchange it for a free ENERGY STAR model.
Have any of you tried or done this before? I’d love to hear about it!

We live in Columbus Ohio and have gotten our grandparent’s new appliances for free. If you have AEP, I recommend reaching out to them. They not only do appliances but light bulbs, and insulation.

I’m from Philadelphia PA I’m disabled and need a refrigerator a stove a washing machine and a dryer looking four energy saver thank you
Trish says
AEP Ohio periodically does this. I have gotten 2 refrigerators from them. A blessing indeed.

Would anyone know if there are any programs to help me get a working refrigerator and a washing machine? Both are barely working. I’m washing clashing by hand in our bathtub and sink. We can’t purchase any milk or pretty much anything that need to be real cold. It’s only good for fruits and vegetables pretty much. I’m a single mom and disabled but I have 16 year old blessing (my son who’s helping me as much as he possibly could). Any information is much appreciated.

All utilities have programs like these..(I work for one…I should know 🙂 ) If you call their customer service line they can give you information on current rebates or deals or check out their website. They’ll also give you tips on how to save money on your bill, what temperature they recommend for heating and cooling etc. One thing I used to always tell customers is to watch out for “vampire” usage. Leaving your chargers for laptops, phones, etc. plugged in while not charging anything wastes electricity and costs you money.

Our California Energy Efficiency Program came to my house and fixed all the holes in our walls. They replaced two outdated light fixtures and our old light bulbs. They also changed our shower heads, and the biggest surprise was when they gave us a new microwave oven to replace our broken one!
Heather says
Ours will give you $30.00 for your refrigerator and haul it away for free.

Any deals like these for Indiana residents? 🙂
Michelle says
In Hawaii, we received a $50 rebate. We also sold our old one (it was still “working”, but loud because something was broken, but the tools and parts to repair it ourselves were too expensive–we had already tried one repair ourselves). We were up front about the problem with the washer. I think there are people who buy appliances that aren’t working to repair them and then they put them in rental properties or sell them after they are repaired. We also sold a stove that wasn’t in perfect shape (but again, still worked). So, rather than have the store haul your appliance away, try to sell it (again, be upfront about the problem with the item). You will probably be able to sell it and get a little more money toward the new appliance.

Massachusetts has programs (http://www.masssave.com/) for discounts and rebates but not free. On larger discounts/rebates need to pre-qualify by having home energy audit completed, which is free and they install LEDs throughout house for free.
This page http://www.masssave.com/residential/mass-energy-rebate lists all available discounts, rebates.
In 2012 I upgraded my dishwasher and received a 37% rebate and local retailer gave me 50% off new stove for purchasing at same time, with free installation. In 2013 received 29% rebate on a new furnace and water heater.
Its always wise to research products, get min 3 quotes and negotiate pricing on large purchases. .

We just had to buy a new dryer and our gas company offered a rebate because we switched from an electric to a gas dryer. There was still out of pocket expense but we paid less than $100 after the rebate.
crystal says
At the manufactured home I used to rent we did a energy audit & upgrade through Puget Sound Energy, ordered new free shower heads through their webstore, had the refrigerator replaced amd the washing machine. Every time they came they brought us LED bulbs and shower heads. With all the water related items (washer, shower heads, etc) your home has to have an electric water heater. The fridge just had to be an older working primary (not out in a garage or shop) refrigerator. The energy audit, repairs and upgrades were part of a program for older manufactured homes. While technically “free” they are paid for through a small (like .002%) “construction tax” on our PSE bills.

Funny I went looking for an older set! In 11 years the hubby and I went through 2 front load washers. When you’re spending thousands $$ on an appliance, I think it’s asinine that they just don’t last! It costs more to repair than replace too. Last year I found an old school top load machine with faux wood paneling and all(for free). I LOVE it!!! It’s agitator was having issues and I was able to repair it MYSELF with a $6.00 part. I’m holding on to this one as long as I can!! The home inspector gave that advice to my sister in law when she bought her house and it had an older set. He said, “when it breaks, fix it! The new ones don’t last!”
Diane says
I was thinking that all of these people probably need to start saving for replacements soon because if you have purchased a new appliance in the past 5 years you are on borrowed time. It is sad, but they just don’t make things like they used to. If I had an old set in working condition, I would keep it. I think you were smart to buy an old set.

We got our attic re-insulated and all the holes sealed up in our house through a program through the state of Illinois that only cost us like $100 after the rebates. We are currently looking at getting a back-up sump pump for 50% off with our town’s rebate! There is tons of stuff out there you just have to look for it!!
Brittany says
What program? We live in Illinois and need to insulate our attic! Thanks.
Jenna says
You should call your local utility company to see what is available. We received rebates in Central IL for added attic/basement insulation, etc.
Shayka says
What company do you have in central IL? We live there also but might not have the same utility company.
Jenna says
Ameren IL & CWLP. If you call your company and ask about energy saving incentives & rebates, they will be able to help you out!
Shayla says
Oh wonderful, we have Ameren! I’ll check on it now. Thanks for the information!
Amanda S says
I would have to look it up to see what program it was. But they worked with our gas company (People’s Gas/North Shore). ComEd also gave us free lightbulbs, insulated some pipes and changed faucet heads to save us money. You can call your electric/gas companies and see if they are offering any type of deals.

In my area, our electric company schedules appointments and a “Green Manager” will come to your home, go from room to room, let you know ways to better save on power, what times of day/week power is less expensive, what peak and non-peak hours are, and a list of rebates, tax credits, coupons, and appliance suggestions for each home. Through these suggestions, all of which were very simple and inexpensive, I was able to cut 1/3 off the electric bill!
Karen says
Here as well! In addition to tips, they replaced ALL of our lightbulbs with LED ones, and replaced our shower head with a low flow version. While I miss the pelting warmth of the shower, we save $20 a month on water and $30 a month on electricity now. They also gave us a $25 VISA prepaid card just for letting them in the house.
Misty Nicole Overstreet-Roberts (The Lady Prefers To Save) says
Here, too! I loved our sheet of tax credits, as it saved us $200.00!
Erin @ My Mommy World says
We were able to get $100 towards a new washing machine when our old one died, which was very helpful! Our utility company also pays $50 to people who give up old refrigerators (and they will pick it up for free!). It’s funny that this was posted today because the utility guys are coming to get an old fridge from our garage this afternoon 🙂
Lana says
Duke will pick up old refrigerators and give you a check for around $50. We are on a co-op and do not have incentives for appliances but we replaced a 20 year old refrigerator in 2013 and our utility bill dropped $30 a month so it is worth replacing one out of pocket.
Ashley P says
We’ve never had that. But my electric company does give rebates for purchasing energy efficient appliances. We got a HUGE rebate when our A/C unit died and had to be replaced. (It still wound up costing us $4,500, but that’s a lot less than the list price was on the unit.)
