Double Dollar Coupon Shopping Trip

One of our local stores is running a Double Dollar coupon promotion so my mom and two sisters and I had fun getting quite the haul of deals. It’s hard to see just how much food we ended up with and these pictures don’t really do it justice.

Let’s just say I think we’re well-stocked on applesauce, pineapple, and Kashi cereal for awhile!

All of our orders combined, the four of us together spent around $79 out-of-pocket for all the groceries shown above. Considering that before coupons, it would have cost us around $400 for all those groceries, I think we got some great bargains!

And here’s specifically what I bought:

Before coupons, my total was $116.66. After coupons, I paid $18.82!!

  • Molly says:

    Holy smokes, that is awesome!!!

  • Letty says:

I SOOOOO wish that grocery store was in my town! You are so lucky to have both a Dillon’s and that store nearby!

  • Rae says:

I really wish our Kroger would do another dollar coupon day. They’ve only done one in the 2 1/2 years I lived here 🙁 I grew up on dollar doubles in NJ so not having it here makes me sad. Then next year I’m moving back to Cali where I’m not going to have ANY doubles at all which makes me double 🙁 🙁

  • Shannon says:

Freaking awesome!!!! Love that OOP! 🙂

  • Stefanie says:

Girl, I don’t know how you do it. I try, and I’m getting better…but I’m not this good yet, lol! That is AWESOME!

  • Susan says:

Wowee!! I count apprx. 55 items (counting group of bananas and group of apples as only 1)…which would make that about 34 cents per item!! Score!

  • Amanda says:

This is truly amazing! My husband does not believe me when I tell him the things I read on your blog….. I too wish we had a store that did dollar doublers like that. Stop and Shop has them every now and then but you can only double 4 per trip and must have their coupon.

  • Janeen says:

Oh wow! Even my husband was in awe of your deal shopping trip!! Congrats!!

  • Great work! We could use more deals like that in our area. Seriously, the only store that doubles is Giant Eagle (on a reg. basis) to my knowledge. Of all the stores you show in the side bar, we only have maybe 2 of the grocery stores and then add on Walmart , RiteAid & Walgreens in the city of Canton, Ohio (which isn’t exactly small).

  • Brittany says:

That is amazing!! Way to go!! Wish we had stores that would run promotions like that!!

  • Amy says:

cool! i just scored a bunch of deals at my stop & shop..they had the double dollar coupon deal going on this week.

  • That is super crazy. I’m amazed!

  • That is super awesome! Great job on all that food! 🙂

  • Lynn in MD says:

Am I guessing correctly, looking at the items you purchased, that they double coupons with a $1.50 face value?

I do love Super Doubles (up to $1.98). Harris Teeter does them sometimes… I think they’re even better than triples (up to $.99) for this area.

    • Allison says:

@Lynn in MD, Lynn, I live in the same area, and they double $1 coupons one week out of the month. Normally they only double coupons with a value up to .50. I have had some months where my coupon savings were definitely over $100. They don’t double $1 internet coupons though, thanks to some fraudsters! >:(

Crystal, I hope you left some for me! I haven’t had a chance to go yet this week! Also, one of my favorite deals to get is using the $1 Olay body wash/soap coupon. They have 2-bar-packs for about 2.19, so afterwards it about .10 for each bar! I’m stocked up!

      • Crystal says:

@Allison, I promise we didn’t clear any shelves. 🙂 I was actually surprised that stuff wasn’t more cleaned out! Maybe the normal couponers are burned out or something.

Be sure and look for the $1 coupons by the Dole salad. Makes them free (because they are on sale for $1) plus there are coupons right there for free bananas when you buy salad.

Also, the applesauce packages are only $0.25 each and there are coupons in the Key Lime packages so you can “roll the deal”, if you want to do multiple transactions!

  • Ann B says:

Holy Cow! That’s a lot of stuff.
Our Dillons closed a few years ago- bummer.

  • Pauline says:

Wow, Wow, Wow. Do you want to shop for me. I can’t believe that.

  • Erin says:

Wow…that almost makes me depressed! I can’t EVER find those kinds of deals around me…and it seems like no matter how hard I try, I can’t get our grocery bill down! Great job on your deals….I wish I could do that!

  • Heather says:

I stand amazed!!!!!!!!!! Absolutely incredible savings!!!!!! You are BLESSED to have a store that runs double coupons that large! You are an inspiration to so many (we can look to you to see the ultimate savings). Surrounding myself with savings masters like yourself is such a wonderful encouragement and inspiration….. now to just somehow get my stores to double coupons like that!!!!!

  • Wonderful trip! I really wish I had stores that doubled near me, it’s so amazing that you can find these deals.

  • Lisa says:

That is amazing!!! Kudos for the great deals! Great work!

  • momondealz says:

WOW!!!! Doesn’t it just make you feel so good?!? People tease me when I gush about good deals sometimes but it’s a great feeling to save money on things your family needs!

  • Layni says:

How do you get so many coupons for each item? Buy multiple papers?

  • Amanda says:

WOW! My grocery store always doubles coupons up to $1.00, which is wonderful BUT they will only do it on ONE of the same coupon per order. I just can’t bring myself to go through 6 or 7 different orders…. SO this deal you have going on is AMAZING!!!

  • Amy Lauren says:

That is so amazing! I wish I lived in a town with better grocery stores. At least we have Harris Teeter and Bi-Lo but I wish we had Publix, they seem to have good deals.

To me the double dollar couple weeks, I do better than HT triples week and stuff. But that is just AMAZING… and all the food looks yummy too, probably because I’m hungry!

  • Cindy says:

    You are my HERO!!!

    Well done!!!

  • Jana says:

WOW! I wish I lived in a larger town with more then a Safeway and a locally owned store. I stock up on sales. But we never get the good deals like this unless we drive 100 miles, lol.

  • Challice says:

There *has* to be a way to do this with Stater Bros and Albertsons. Even with a total gluten free diet.. I can still see items that we could use and cost more than what you paid. All the other wheat items could easily bless some of the elderly in our church. GAH! I get so frustrated when I cant figure things out so quickly. LOL!

  • erin w says:

wow. it’s so hard to not be jealous of you for whatever local store you have!

you are amazing crystal, for all you do. with 3 kids! makes me tired just thinking about it.

  • Erika says:

Makes me wish Alaska had any stores at all that doubled coupons or did a promotion like this. I’d easily drive to other parts of the state to get in on a deal like you just got. Wow! Congrats!

  • chrystal m says:

Wow thats amazing! I’m still kind of new to couponing. I started at the beginning of Feb. I’ve also gotten some really good deals. The pictures are truly inspiring. I wonder which coupons do you use? I am a visual learner and I would like you to list the types of coupons you are useing. For example are they all coupons for single iteams, or $5 of your total bill, or a combination. I guess I need to know what to focus on to get great deals like you did. When I find my deals its always one, two, or three iteams at a time. I would love to get to the point where I can pick up a grocery cart full of iteams and get great deals at one time. How do I do that? Please give me your advice!

  • What a great trip! I love dollar doubles!

  • Kristen says:

Great job! I noticed you purchased several bags of lettuce. Do you freeze them? How does it taste after it has been frozen? Also wondering about freezing milk…it just seems to me that items like that would not taste well after being frozen. Maybe I just need to know the secrets! 🙂 Thanks for all you do.

    • Susan says:

@Kristen, My experience is that lettuce is no good after it is frozen. I’ve never frozen milk myself, but I think that it can be used in recipes after it is frozen?

      • jennifer says:

I’ve frozen milk before and only had issues with skim milk. There isn’t enough fat content or something in it. I ended up throwing out about 1 1/2 gallons.

Lettuce isn’t something that can be frozen.

  • Melissa says:

So jealous…you ladies did awesome! None of my stores double coupons in my area….not even my Meijer. No fair!

  • charlene says:

Great job! The stores in SW Florida don’t double coupon. 🙁

    • Rae says:

@charlene, grocery stores in Florida are not allowed to double by law. The only reason Kmart gets away with it there is because they are not technically a grocery store.

  • Sonshine says:

    WOW! that is amazing!

No stores in my area do anything like that! No double coupons at all! I am just grateful that they accept coupons and I can still save money. 🙂

  • Ashlee says:

Wow. What great deals. We used to have super double coupons (thats what they called it here), but not in a LONG time. We do get triple coupons ($.50 and below) on occasion, which still gets some great deals.

  • sharon says:

WOW! That is soooo awesome! I love seeing the pictures! I need to start taking pictures. It makes it more real.

  • Sheena says:

You are an inspiration – truly!

  • Amanda C. says:

Wow, great pics! That is really quite the haul! 🙂

What part of Kansas are these Dillon’s Double Dollar events in? My nearest Dillon’s is 35 minutes away so I don’t make it their too often, but I would definitely make the trip for these types of sales. If anyone knows what city, could you let me know? Please and THANK YOU! 🙂

    • ST says:

      @Amanda C.,
      Lawrence doubles coupons on Thursdays

      • Amanda C. says:

Really? That’s the area that I go to! I’m in Gardner, so I only make the trip once in a while when the deals are really good.

So they double $1 ones every Thursday? Is it a particular store? Or all of them? And is there a limit?

Sorry for all the questions, but wow, I’m just really excited now. lol Thanks so much for your help! 🙂

  • Lisa says:

    WOW! Great job!

  • Ashley T says:

WOW that is amazing!!! I try so hard to learn to do those types of deals. However, we don’t have a grocery store in my are that does deals like this! I so wish we had a Dillon, or Publix or several of the more popular stores!

  • Regina says:

I am so jealous….:) That is an awesome job! Wish we had more stores around here so the competition might be a little more fierce.

  • Beth says:

You are a goddess! Did you happen to catch the Nightline episode last week with Trish and Mr. Coupon? It was pretty good. I recognized your sidebar with all the names of grocery stores too, not sure if it WAS in fact yours, but it looked just like it!
Anywho, I love your blog and you are such an inspiration to me, especially with the saving 100% down for a home. Your trials and tribulations hit home with me on a few occasions, which means that it’s not just happening to me, which is a relief! I’m thinking of taking my blog off blogger and onto an actual website, and I’d love for any advice from you, so if you get a free minute or two, can you shoot me an email and grant me some great advice? I’d like to throw a few ideas your way too, and since you’re so smart in this, maybe you can see if you think they’d work. Thanks!

  • crystal says:

OH MY!!! I want to go to your store!!!

  • Karen says:

that’s awesome!! I still can’t get that good of a deal! Do you buy only sale items and then make a menu?

  • Stpehanie says:

How do you find out about when they are doubling high coupons or tripling them? Do they advertise it?

  • Tori Leitch says:

oh my goodness you are AWESOME!!!! i wish you could post it but i guess its way to much lol:) you did a great job!!!

  • Lindsey says:

That is so amazing! GO YOU! There are no grocery stores in Baltimore with coupon events like this and I’m sure there won’t be any in California when I move there in June. Thanks to your website though- I still know how to get some great deals! =)

  • Whoa – this is amazing. I really need a shopping trip (or two) like that! We’ve been “eating from the pantry” for TWO months now & my house looks pretty empty. I’m so excited for April to be here when I can restock. I will say, though, our “eating from the pantry” efforts have paid off – WE ARE DEBT FREE!!

  • Marie says:

We don’t have doubles here, but do have a fair number of catalina deals. Good job!

  • Susan J says:

Thought you’d get a kick out of this, Crystal – I just showed this post to my husband, and his comment? “Nice chairs” =)

We’re in the market for new kitchen chairs. Could you tell? =P

  • Jean says:

    YOU are amazing!

I am so thankful for your encouragement.

  • aditd says:

Thanks for the tip. I’ll use it when updating my coupon site
