I’ve heard rave reviews of this Homemade Latte Recipe ever since I posted it. And I’ve wanted to try it, but I was happy with my regular coffee with cream and sugar so I figured, why change it?
Well, in the last few months, I’ve been slowly weaning myself off of most sugar in my diet. And a few weeks ago, I stopped using sugar in my coffee altogether.
{Can we all take a moment of silence? Did you read what I just wrote? This girl who has had a lifelong sweet tooth, STOPPED USING SUGAR IN HER COFFEE?!?
I’m not even sure that I can communicate the magnitude of that statement. Next thing you know, I’m going to start a blog about doing car repairs or something. Well, I may need to first learn the name of the car I drive (babysteps, babysteps…). But hey, if I can do something I never thought would be remotely possible — drink coffee without sugar and like it — who knows what I might do next?! :)}
At any rate, as a result, I’ve been experimenting with different kinds of coffees and drinks, including Good Girl Moonshine and Bulletproof Coffee.
{If you Google the recipes for those, please promise me you won’t write me off as total crazy. Because I liked both recipes and have made them multiple times. I know… I may be going through a midlife crisis or something. ;)}
As I experimenting with different recipes, I remembered this Homemade Latte Recipe and knew it was high time I try it. I used some of my Amazon gift cards from Swagbucks to purchase the Aerobie Aeropress and AeroLatte Frother.
I’d never made espresso before and was super impressed with how easy it was to make!
When you pull the Aeropress off the cup, the most amazing coffee smell wafts up. Love it!
(Also, totally unrelated: but notice how I’m keeping my nails painted thanks to the encouragement from some of you in the comments here. And it’s been over a week and it’s totally working to kill my nail-biting habit. And it makes me so happy to look down and see my red nails. I have hope that they are going to grow out all pretty, long, and strong… but for now I’m celebrating the little victories.)
This frother is absolutely so much fun!
And there you have it! An amazing cup of Homemade Latte for much, much less than you’d pay at the coffee shop and without using an Espresso Machine.
You can find the detailed recipe here. Also: if you want to make a Breve Latte, just substitute Half and Half for the milk, like I did. And then don’t go look up the calorie count after you make it like I did… yikes! 😉
A bit off topic, but where did you get that blue coffee mug with the hearts? I really like it and would want to purchase several if you know where you found it. Thanks!
It’s a Life is Good brand mug and I got it from a sale on Zulily. I love it!
I got one of these for my husband. It has saved us a bundle of money because the coffee drinks we make at home are now so much better – buying coffee out has become kind of sad. But at home! Our coffee drinks are stupendous. And the kids love having a warm frothed milk for a cold day. It’s perfect.
Crystal,
I stop using sugar, and went to a mostly vegan diet 7 years ago, but I have to confess sugar is an on going battle, that I fight from time to time.
Stay strong girl, it’s not easy, but you have made a major step!!! <:D
My favorite is the pumpkin latte – I make mine in the microwave with a 1 qt. canning jar and some milk. Works great every time and no need to go into Starbucks! I like it plain as well, but my heart just loves pumpkin almost any time of year 🙂
http://www.whisktogether.com/2013/12/13/latte-no-machine-required/
Pumpkin Latte
6 oz. milk
1 tablespoon pumpkin puree
1 dash of cinnamon and nutmeg
1 splash of vanilla extract
sugar to taste (1 tablespoon brown sugar) (optional)
6 oz. coffee
1. I use half coffee and half milk. So, I fill up my coffee mug halfway with milk. Pour that into a 1 quart mason jar and put the lid on. Add the pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. Add sugar to taste (optional). Shake for 30 seconds. It will get nice and frothy.
2. Microwave the milk for 1 minute. I did 1 minute 10 seconds because I used a supersize 12 ounce mug. I typical 6 ounce mug probably needs more towards 45 seconds. This depends on the power of your microwave, too. The milk will bubble and grow. It’s fun to watch.
3. Pour the coffee into the coffee mug halfway up while the milk heats up.
4. Pour the milk slowly into the coffee and spoon the milk foam on top. Drink and enjoy!
I had to look up the Good Girl Moonshine recipe and was surprised to find it was from THM! I read the Above Rubies magazine and have a friend who does THM, but I hadn’t really looked into it. But I had all the ingredients for the GGMS, so I decided to try it. Like her recipe says, the first sip did make me go “EeeeAhh!”, but it grows on you! I like the other readers’ suggestions to use flavored tea as the base, so I’ll try that next time because I do like tea. Thanks for posting!
I have tried the GGMS also, but I need to try different varieties of tea, to see if I can get it more flavorful, I might have watered mine down a bit. I have not tried Bulletproof coffe yet or the shrinker.
My favorite summer coffee drink:
Make strong hot coffee, using trader joes dark cup o joe, just ground
Chill overnight
Mix 2/3 iced coffee to 1/3 2% milk
Drink with a straw (becaus the straw makes it fancy)
I love my AeroPress! After making so many lattes, I have a hard time just drinking a regular cup of coffee with creamer. I also cold brew a coffee concentrate for iced coffee. I got the recipe over on Pioneer Woman’s site.
Oh, thanks for the suggestion to try Pioneer Woman’s recipe!
Painting your nails even when they are short is a wonderful way to let them grow! I never want to bite polished nails! You’ll notice a huge difference in 2-3 weeks, then just keep painting them until they are so long that you are proud of them and can even go without polish, but will not want to destroy there beauty with biting them! (A determination to never put your hands to your face is almost an equal remedy, if you can stick with it! I’ve sat on my hands many times lol – i’m 56 year old and always aware if the challenge to not repeat the old nail-biting habit.)
Thanks so much for the encouragement and suggestions!!
I also drink goodgirl moonshine. A variation to what you posted, I steep two bags of flavored tea(peach, zinger berry, cherry etc.) In about 4 c. Of hot water for about 10 min. Add 2 tbps. Of AVC & 2 tbsp of truvia. Pour over ice in a sipper cup. I have given up sugar also & have replaced it with a healthier alternative:) these drinks are included in the diet I follow called the Trim Healthy Mama. There is also a recipe called the Shrinker that you can make with Oolong tea. It is on their facebook site under drink files. It is my favorite, it tastes like a Starbuck drink to me.
I just made The Shrinker yesterday… and really liked it! I’ve been having fun experimenting with eating the Trim Healthy Mama way the past month and have been surprised at how much I love it!
I understand the achievement of giving up sugar in your coffee, I also gave up sugar in my coffee earlier this year and have come to enjoy it with just cream.
And great job with your nails… I am also working on breaking that habit as well.
Go you for giving up sugar, too!!
Congratulations! I know your body is thanking you for ditching the sugar. Baby steps…next comes the kids and the husband. 🙂
I thought some of your readers might be interested in reading this link:
http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/QAA401262/Should-I-Drink-Bulletproof-Coffee.html
At first I read that to mean that the next step was ditching my kids and hubby… that’s why one should never rush when reading! 🙂
Ha ha ha!
Funny!
We normally drink water, but I also grow my own mint and chamomile to make herbal tea:
http://theprudenthomemakerblog.blogspot.com/2014/01/grow-your-own-herbal-tea.html
(The mint came in handy today for homemade ice cream! I’ve decided to grow more now for that reason!)
I also added 3 more lemon trees (I already have 3) to my garden so that we will have enough to make our own lemonade for years to come.
I forgot to add the one I just made last week: grape juice! I am making more this week and canning it from our grapes.
I’ve grown mint and made tea from it before and it is so delicious! My only problem was that the mint almost overtook my little back garden… it’s certainly a hearty plant! 🙂
My husband and I came up with this Frozen Frappe Drink. It’s really good.

Thanks so much for sharing this recipe!
I put gelatin powder in my coffee (put it in the cup and pour HOT liquid over the top to dissolve.) Great anti-inflammatory and a little added protein, and it doesn’t change the taste at all. I need to try eliminating the sugar I add… did you sweeten your latte? Was it okay without sugar?
Thanks for the suggestion on the gelatin powder!
I didn’t add any sweetener, but I’ve also gotten used to drinking coffee without sugar, so it tasted great to me!
Nail biting is the worst! I had always found that painting them always helped me also but I would rarely find time to do so. About 2 months ago I decided to splurge on myself and purchase some Jamberry nails from a friends party she had. I almost immediately put some on and I have not bit my nails since. The problem now is I have never had nails before and I find them rather weird, especially at work. I work in a factory part time making trucks, my main job is filling in for people who have the night off and they feel so weird doing different things that I was used to doing. The even better news is, even though they feel weird they also feel stronger. I know Jamberry is more expensive but they are suppose to last up to 2 weeks on hands and 6 weeks on feet. My first set lasted just under 3 on my hands and were going strong the only reason I changed them was because they were themed for the 4th of July and my anniversary is the 7th and I wanted to be fresh and pretty!
LOVE it! I’m so glad to hear that Jamberry is working so well for you! That’s fantastic!!
Hi! Your newsletters are so chalked full of useful information I so appreciate them! I’m going to try the homemade latte. I am commenting because I am slowly weening myself off of sugar too! I’m curious, are you going cold turkey or substituting with healthier options? I think it is so difficult! Good luck!
I’ve been slowly weaning myself off but am substituting with some stevia and xylitol.
You should do a podcast with Dave Asprey, if you’re into the bulletproof coffee.
😉
I make a cold coffee concentrate in a French press. I use a whole scoop of protein in my iced coffee and 1T in hot. And I’m down to 2T of creamer in my coffee – baby steps 🙂
Way to go! It’s all about babysteps!
Sad to say I make just plain black coffee at home. But I so want to make fancy drinks. I’ve been interested in that Aerobie Aeropress. If you’re loving it then I need to try it. And I must try Bulletproof coffee, that looks delicious. I’m a butter loving gal.
I need to tell you that I can feel so much more joy coming through in your posts. I’m so happy that the move has been the right thing for you and your family. 🙂
Aw, thank you so much for your kind encouragement and sweet words!
I use French Vanilla coffee for my Bulletproof concoction! Here’s what I do-
12 ozs. of VERY hot coffee
2 TBSP of half and half
1 tsp vanilla
1/4tsp caramel flavoring
2 tsp homemade Truvia
A few sprinkles of stevia powder
4 dashes of celtic salt
2 tsp of Kerrygold butter
2tsp of MCT oil
1 scoop of vanilla protein powder.
I drink this every Sunday morning to tide me over until lunch at church.
For my GGMS, I brew 6 bags of Peach tea, add 3 TBSP of Braggs ACV, and 1/2 tsp of stevia powder. The peach completely covers the ACV. Even my hubby couldn’t tell it was in there!! I love both of these drinks and was so happy to see you post them!!!
What a delicious concoction! Thanks for sharing!
And thanks for the tip that Peach tea covers the ACV taste. My family is so not a fan of GGMS because of the ACV taste. Maybe I can bring them over to the dark side with Peach tea. 🙂
I’m so glad you liked it!!!
Now, I still need to try bulletproof coffee. I’ll get there. 🙂
Thank you so much for being the inspiration for this post! Multiple times, people have come up to me at conferences, etc. and told me how your coffee recipe has changed their lives. I thought you should know that. 🙂
And now I’m hooked!
We received a frother as a Christmas gift one year. I didn’t initially use it, but now I do and really like it. During the summer, I like cold brewed iced coffee. Delicious and really, really simple. Not one bit bitter at all.
My son found a recipe for a thick chocolate syrup using cocoa from Joy of Cooking. A good size spoonful along with milk along with hot coffee of choice is really delicious during colder weather.
The syrup also makes very good hot cocoa using hot milk to melt the syrup.
I think I’m going to become a frother fanatic! It’s just so fun!
Where did u find the bulletproof coffee beans? I have no idea where to get them! Do u know if Whole Foods has them?
I wasn’t that detailed — I just used what I already had on hand. 🙂
I love making “Carob Mocha” (probably not a “real” mocha but I’m hooked). I’ve made it dozens of times, so filling and lovely! And healthy!!
http://unconventionalhomemaker.wordpress.com/2011/02/11/carob-mocha/
Oh yum! Thank you for sharing!
Congratulations on giving up the sugar in your coffee. Being a girl with a huge sweet tooth too, I know that is a big accomplishment!
As far as coffee goes, I don’t even drink coffee. I know I’m probably weird as most of my friends and family drink coffee. I love the smell, just can’t stand the taste. 🙂
I love that we’re all different in our likes and dislikes!
I love hazelnut iced coffee. Coffee, skim milk, a tiny dash of sugar-free hazelnut syrup (Torani is the best), and some ice cubes. Yum!
Yum! Thanks for sharing!
Almost completely unrelated, but gelatin is great for strengthening nails (and hair, skin, joints, etc.). I dissolve 1 tablespoon of gelatin powder in about 1/3 cup cool water and then add 2/3 cups of warm tea. I also add a little honey to help cover the taste. Here’s some more information I found: http://wellnessmama.com/7419/gelatin-uses/ .
What a great idea! Thanks so much for sharing!
Never tried the Bullet Proof Coffee and I have all the ingredients for it here at the house gonna give it a shot.
Let me know what you think of it!
Haha! I good pun. 🙂
I’m a nail picker…big time. I don’t even know I’m doing it! And I bite them a bit too. What other tips did you get?? I cannot stop for the life of me! I would love to have just nice-looking nails, long or not! 🙂
You can check out the tips in the comments here: https://moneysavingmom.com/2014/07/nail-biting-habit-shame-im-learning-authenticity.html
Thank you! I should have checked there first but I got a little excited 😉
I also recommend making a cold brew concentrate and adding ice and milk for a iced latte. Cold brew is so smooth and incredibly easy to make overnight in a French press.
Such a great idea! I’ve never been a big iced coffee fan, but I’m going to have to try this sometime!
Just as a tip to anyone who wants to purchase the frother, they can be found at ikea or costplus world market for about $3 apiece. My one yr old rips ours apart anytime he gets his hands on it, so everytime we stop at ikea (2 hours from us), I buy a couple, as my husband has declared it the most important part of his coffee making process each morning. We even take it when we visit family. 🙂
Thank you so much for this tip!!
I LOVE both of those recipes-the Good Girl Moonshine and Bulletproof Coffee. Another great drink to try that is sort of like an Iced Chai Latte is “The Shrinker.” Here’s the link!
http://www.trimhealthymama.com/main-home/free-recipes/shrinker-recipe2/
I’m making that this afternoon! Cannot WAIT to try it!
It is so yummy! Please tell us how you like it.
I made the Oolong tea concentrate yesterday and just finished making it — yummy! I think I overdid it on the cayenne, so next time, I’m going to put a little less of that in it and then I think it will be perfect!
Love our AeroPress! It makes the best coffee. We always travel with it (even when we went to Central America last month).
I froth my milk using the Ikea frother, just like the AeroLatte, but for less money.
Oh, I LOVE the idea of traveling with it! Thanks for the suggestion!
Congratulations on the no-sugar coffee! That is a huge accomplishment (said in my best sweet drinkers lover voice.) 😉
I just made some GGMS before lunch along with a Singing Canary (much yummier with 4 strawberries and a bit less ACV.) Later I will have a Shrinker, too.
We brew Starbucks’ Espresso coffee at home and add some half n half with our Aerolatte (purchased at Bed Bath & Beyond as I love their coupons and happiness return guarantee.)
P.S. Your nails look so pretty!
I want to try the Singing Canary, too! It looks SO good — and good for you, too!
This is the way I made espressos in my dorm at school, and continue to do so at home. I also make homemade blondies and butter pecan milk steamers as well. The French Press, regardless of its design, is the way to go!
Yummy! Do you have recipes for those on your blog?
