Coming in March: Freezer Cooking and 31 Days to a Better Grocery Budget

I’m excited! So many of you have asked for me to do a step-by-step tutorial on how to cut your grocery budget. Now that the blog transition is done and I have more time for writing, I’m tackling a big project during the month of March: 31 Days To a Better Grocery Budget.

This series will give 31 tips and ideas for how you can significantly cut your grocery bill without sacrificing quality or quantity. Some of the ideas might be ones you’re already doing, but I hope everyone is able to pick up a few new things to further maximize the mileage of your money at the grocery store.

And March 1-2, 2010 (that’s Monday and Tuesday of next week–believe it or not!), I’ll be hosting another Freezer Cooking Day marathon right here, with FishMama’s help. If you’d like to join in, we’ll have a link-up on Friday (February 26, 2010) for you to share your plan and recipes.

I’ll be sharing details tomorrow on how I make up my Freezer Cooking Day plan on a budget and how you can, too. I plan to share a play-by-play of my cooking day on Monday and then finish up with a Freezer Cooking Day Accomplishments link-up on Tuesday.

If you’re planning to join us, be sure to sign up on our Facebook Event Page and follow along with the Twitter hashtag #oamc. If you’re new around here and wondering what Freezer Cooking is all about, you can check out some of my previous Freezer Cooking Day posts here.

I am looking forward to this! I am in desperate need of a grocery budget makeover. We have had a HUGE change in lifestyle since my husband has been on disability. We are young, we can cook, we can save!

  • Dana says:

I am looking forward to this also! I have been considering the OAMC/freezer cooking for a few months, but do not even know where to begin :/

  • Tara says:

I can’t wait! My first baby is due in 5 weeks and I’m hoping to focus the month of March on stocking the freezer with ready-made meals. I’ve already started cooking up batches of chicken and ground turkey, but would love some actual meal and storage ideas.

Really looking forward to some tips to cut down even more on our grocery budget. Every little bit helps!

  • Ellen says:

The 31 days sounds good. I benefitted from Sharpen Your Scissors 31-day coupon tips that she introduced in January. Yours I’m sure will be interesting because I’m guessing it includes other ideas besides couponing. Looking forward to it.

As for the freezer day? We’ve saved enough from our food budget & money back from a credit card to pay for a freezer very soon! Yeah. Now I just have to read up about what is a good freezer. Any suggestions?

  • Ellyn says:

Woohoo! I’m looking forward to this 🙂

I’m really looking forward to learning more from you about cutting my grocery budget. I cook almost every meal ( and not with pre-packaged convenience foods) and my grocery bill is running about $550-600 per month for 6! Yikes! I know that is way too much, but I’m not sure where I can cut back, especially when I’m feeding 2 teenaged boys.

I also wanted to say that I am really enjoying your posts on paying cash for a house. I’m sure you have lots of negative comments from people that just cannot imagine even having such a goal, particularly if they are strangled with debt themselves, but I think it is good for people to be told that it is possible and so good of you to share how it can be done. I often hear or read that is impossible for a family to live on one income. I know you hear that it is impossible to save enough to pay cash for a house. It is tempting to tell folks that I must be a figment of their imaginations! You are doing much better than that. Congratulations!

I can’t wait for the 31 days series!

I am planning on joining the OAMC cooking days too. 🙂 Working on the plan and grocery list today so I can do my shopping tomorrow and work on things over the weekend and Monday. 🙂

I just did my monthly pantry/freezer shopping trip last night. I’ve spent the last few months working out my own monthly menu planning and shopping savings system, so I’ll be super happy to see new tips!

  • So how do you know your pantry is empty enough for OAMC? I’m still doing the pantry challenge (since Jan 1!) and could keep going for a while!

I always love the Freezer Cooking Day Posts, but I am beyond excited about the 31days!!!

We are close to a $40 weekly budget , but it’s always fun to see a play by play of the way others save! Maybe that $40 will become $35!! Every penny counts!

  • Sunnie in NC says:

Ohhhh I can’t wait!!!! Bring it on!

  • MrsEAM says:

I’m so excited for the 31 days posts. I’m seriously in need of this as our grocery bill seems to have gotten out of control! I definitely need some advice on how to stock up on things and look for the best deals.

  • Nichole says:

I am excited about joining this time! I just got my order of all gluten free flours from and am going to be baking some Gluten Free and Dairy Free items to put in our freezer for later!

  • I have wanted to do this for years! I am so excited to join in!!

  • Great idea. I love this one as well as your series so far on saving 100% down for a house. I used to follow your Biblical Womanhood and Mom of Littles blogs, and know that you don’t have much time to write the type of content there that you used to, but was wondering if sometime here you could do another post about how you spend the time you have as a mom of three little ones during the day. I am entering into that phase, though just with two kids, and would love to read more about how you divvy up your time while doing so much on this blog. Thanks!

  • Heidi says:

I just wanted to let you know that I have done the freezer cooking days the past 2 months and they have been so helpful. One of the best things it has done for my husband and me is that it forced us into portion control. We have both been losing weight and saving money by doing monthly cooking. Thanks for all of the tips and the great recipes!

  • Heather says:

Thank you so much for your 31 days of saving in march. I am really looking forward to learning how to trim the budget more.

  • March is going to be a fun month! I can’t wait to hear about all the savings and share some tips myself.

  • I cant wait for this this will be so much fun. can i do a link up from my blog and use your 31 days button/ pix.

  • Karen says:

Lowering grocery budget help could not come at a better time! So excited about this! THANK YOU!

  • GME says:

Oh yay! I’d love to know how to cut the grocery budget. We don’t do too badly for a family of six, but I know I could do better. I’m another of those interested in tips on a “well-stocked” pantry. I know some of that depends on what your family likes/eats – but knowing what others do in stocking their pantries will help me know better what I need to do!
