Not pictured: My son shot a deer (his first ever!) this week, so we packaged up about 30lbs of ground venison for our freezer. Yes, the deer are small in South Carolina. 🙂 We eat a LOT of venison at our house as my husband is an avid hunter.

How old are your kids? I have 3 and I think they would eat that in less than a week.
Hunting question- does it end up being cost effective? I told my husband he should do that so we could get cheap meat but he said all the costs from gear and permits, plus the time, would not be worth it. Is all the “stuff” really that expensive?
But I also know he doesn’t have a strong desire to do it, so that could be part of his pessimism.
That’s a great question! When I married my husband, he already owned allllll the hunting stuff…and then some! So we’ve invested almost nothing financially over the last 14 years (just the licenses/permits and a few odds and ends like special laundry detergent and deodorant :)). He normally gets 4 deer a year (the amount of venison our family of 6 eats in a year), which is approximately 150lbs of meat. We process it ourselves, so there is no cost there (just time!). I’m not sure what the going rate is for a pound of organic, grass-fed, free-range meat – but I KNOW we save a BUNCH of money, thanks to his hobby!
However, if you are just starting out, and only hunted casually (maybe one deer a year) – I’m not sure it would be worth it. I guess you’d have to sit down and figure out what is absolutely necessary gear/permits, and how much it costs – and how much meat you’d need to get out of it to regroup your expenses!
P.S. I just asked my husband – he said he pays $20 per year for a license that covers up to 5 bucks plus 2 does. This also covers fishing for the year. So the expense of a license is minimal.
Thank you! I checked our state and it looks like annual hunting and fishing is 50, though I have no idea how many animals that covers. Looks like start up would be expensive though I’m sure there’s ways to save still. I appreciate it your help! And that’s awesome to get that much meat for your family that cheap! Maybe we’ll join the hunting ranks one day. 🙂
Congrats on your sons first deer!!!! I can tell you’re one proud momma!
Thank you! Even though I’m married to a hardcore hunter, I don’t know the first thing about hunting…so yes, it’s all impressive to me.🤣
I was just wondering where you lived in SC to have milk that cheap. Born and raised in SC too and have lived in Barnwell County, Union, Greenwood, Myrtle Beach and Simpsonville, so it’s possible we’ve crossed paths before. My mom used to do a killer venison BBQ.

I love South Carolina – including those places you mentioned.❤️
Congratulations to your son on his first deer! Very exciting!
Thank you! I was pretty happy for him!
