Bread Machine Buttery Rolls

My dad surprised me with this brand-spankin’-new bread machine for Christmas! My other bread machine was on its very last leg after being used countless times over the last seven years, so I was thrilled with this gift. Plus, this new one is more high-tech, larger, and has two kneading paddles. I’ve already been extremely impressed at the difference in texture of the dough I’ve made as opposed to my other smaller bread machine.

The new bread machine came just in time for the Eat From The Pantry Challenge and has proven to be a very useful tool to have at my disposal–especially on days when I don’t have a lot of time to spend in the kitchen.

I tried a new recipe yesterday since we needed some bread to go along with dinner. This is a recipe from my brother, it uses basic ingredients you usually will always have on hand, and it literally took me 5 minutes of labor!

The rolls turned out beautifully and my whole family thought they were very delicious. It’s definitely a winner recipe and one I’ll be making many times again.

Now that I have a bread machine which makes beautiful dough with only a few minutes of work, I think I’m going to be doing a whole lot more baking. I might even attempt making cinnamon roll dough in the bread machine–something I’ve never had success with before.

    That is the exact bread machine I invested in a couple of years ago! I liked how it make a regular loaf shape. After doing lots of research, it was touted as the best! I got mine used on Ebay for much less though. And those rolls look delicious!

    only use Bread flour when it is in the recipie..

    a “dough” recipie I use all the time with my bread machine

    Butter Crescents:

    1/2 C Milk
    4tbs Butter
    1 Egg
    1/4 C Sugar
    1/4 t Salt
    2C All Pourpose Flour
    1 tsp yeast

    Run Dough cycle in machine
    divide dough in half
    roll out dough in a circle and cut like pizza
    roll up like crescent rolls
    repeat steps with 2nd half of dough
    put on greased baking sheet, cover & let rise for 30 min
    bake @ 325 degrees for 20 min

  • I love my bread maker! I bought it for $5.00 at a thrift shop and it works great. Every Wednesday (including today!) I make whole wheat pizza crust with it – it’s great because I start the machine, take my daughter to an afterschool activity, then when we get back the dough is done.

    Also, bread flour has more gluten than all-purpose flour, so it will rise better. All-purpose flour will work in recipes calling for bread flour, but the resulting product may not rise as well.

    My favorite roll recipe – originally from Quick Cooking Magazine.

    Dinner Rolls
    1 C. water (70-80 degrees)
    2 T. butter, cut in smaller pieces
    1 egg
    1/4 C. sugar
    1 t. salt
    3 1/4 C. bread flour
    1 1/4 t. yeast

    Put in bread machine in order suggested by manufacturer. Select dough setting (check dough after 5 min. of mixing, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water if too dry or flour if too wet.) After cycle is complete, divide dough into 16 small portions; shape each into a ball. Place on greased baking sheets. Let rise until doubled. Bake at 375 degres for 12-15 minutes or until light golden brown. If desired, brush with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse salt. If you make 8-10 large rolls, these work well for hamburger buns.

    Crystal, When you shaped the dough into rolls, do you roll them into roll and sort of knead them again? I made some Sweet Potato Rolls last night by hand and the dough was really really sticky so I used a cookie scoop to measure out “rolls” and plop onto my pan. They turned out okay but not as pretty as yours 🙂 I’m still learning how to do bread at home so any advice you can offer would be helpful. And I don’t have a bread machine – I actually had one for about 10 years and used it maybe a handful of times before selling it in a yard sale for $5…man I am kicking myself now!!!

    Money Saving Mom here: If your dough is too sticky to work with, try oiling your hands. If that doesn’t work, I’d recommend adding in a little extra flour. Dough that is just a tad bit sticky usually makes softer rolls, though, so don’t go overboard on adding extra flour!

    When making rolls, I usually just pull a piece of dough off and work it into a little ball and plop it onto the cookie sheet. I should make a video on how I do it, because it’s hard to explain in writing!

    I got a bread machine for Christmas as well! Hubby picked it up for $6 at the thrift store (he understands my appreciation for both kitchen gadgets AND frugality!), and I have had SO much fun with it. One question, and this may seem kind of obvious, but can you freeze these? Right now it’s just my husband and I, and we’ve found it difficult to eat an entire batch of rolls before they get stale or moldy. I know you can freeze bread, but does it work better to freeze a portion of the dough, or to freeze the cooked rolls? I’d appreciate anyone’s input–I’d really love to try this recipe, but hate to see half of it go to waste!

      I don’t know about freezing, but I live by myself and I have found breads and rolls last a long long time in the refrigerator. I just micro wave a couple of seconds to get to room temp or warm.

        I lived with my mum until she died some four months back and as a way to make sure I don’t fall into bad eating habits I make it a point to cook at least one full meal in a day. I also resurrected my old bread machine and quite honestly have only bought one loaf within the past three months.

        You can both refrigerate and freeze dough.

        I make a pizza for my brother, sister, and nephew each Friday, along with oven chips, and I find that if I make double the quantity I can happily store it in the refrigerator for up to three days; it will keep in the freezer for up to three months. Just be sure you take it out of the fridge/refrigerator and leave it sitting at room temperature well in advance.

    I have this same one…a couple years older though! I love it. I probably don’t use it enough though. In the booklet that came with it, there is a recipe for cinnamon swirl bread. It was wonderful!

  • I recently made French bread for the first time using our bread machine and it turned out great! You only need flour, water, yeast, salt, egg, and cornmeal. (and I bet you could even get by without the cornmeal) Here is the link to the post with the recipe

  • I just use a regular bread machine recipe, and add in some parmesan cheese (the kind in the plastic container works fine) and some garlic powder and parsley or other dried herbs I think might taste yummy. I call it Garlic Parm Bread and everyone loves it! I gave several loaves away for Christmas last year.

    I’ve also done dill bread by just adding a little dill mix to my recipe. Very good also!

    This is the exact recipe I use and I have a batch in my bread maker right now. I use half wheat and half white flour as well. I roll my dough balls in butter after they are formed (a trick from my mom) and my rolls turn out purfect every time.

    Here is a simple way to make cinnamon rolls and no one will guess what you made them from. Use an 8 count can of Grands type biscuits-I usually use Aldi as they have no artificial ingredients. Lay the biscuits out in 2 rows of 4 with all 8 overlapping. Flour your surface so they don’t stick. Now use a rolling pin and roll it out into a rectangle about 3/8 of an inch thick. Spread with butter or margarine then sprinke with brown sugar-enough to make a solid covering but not thick or they are too sweet. Then sprinkle with cinnamon. Rollup and cut into 9 slices. Place in an 8×8 or9x9 baking dish sprayed with PAM. Bake at 375 for about 20 minutes of until golden brown. Frost with 1 cup powdered sugar, 1/2 tsp vanilla and enough milk to make a drizzling consistency. My mother-in-law ate these cinnamon rolls for 10 years or more before she knew my secret recipe and she didn’t believe they were just refrigerated biscuits. I’d love to make them for her now as she went to be with the Lord last February and she LOVED my cinnamon rolls.

    I use this bread recipe for everything. Bread, rolls, pizza dough, cinnamon rolls, hamburger buns, bread bowls, bread sticks…I could go on and on. I don’t have a bread machine but I can make anything in an hour. It’s amazing. The dvd gives you the awesome recipe and instructions on how to make anything bread related in an hour. I use it twice a week. I haven’t bought my own bread, rolls, buns since I got this recipe in September!

    Sounds like a very yummy recipe. Quick question – to you use a thermometer to test the temp of your liquid? I’ve had horrible luck in doing anything with yeast, but I think I overheat my liquid.

    April – Rolls aren’t nearly as good after they have been frozen and thawed, they are much drier. You should be able to freeze the balls of dough though and after the dough thaws, let them rise and bake them. Fresh yummy rolls!

    (love those pumpkin bars too), it basically has more butter and more powdered sugar than the allrecipes one.

    This post comes at perfect timing. I went shopping for a bread maker last night. I went to four different stores with no success. I joked that all of you out there on this pantry challenge got tired of purchasing bread. After all, the pantry challnege is what is prompting my purchase for one of these. My husband asked me to do some research online today. Of course, before I started my research, I checked for new material on your blog,hehehe. (lucky me!) So, with all that being said, does anyone have any suggestions on a place to shop for a good bread maker (machine) ?

    Oh wow lucky lucky! That breadmaker looks awesome. When I get a new breadmaker I want a horizontal loaf maker like you have (I don’t like using the tall loaves for sandwhiches so it doesn’t replace that need) although I’ll probably be getting one that’s not as fancy *tear* 🙁 lol. With the way you cook and bake I know that you’ll get your (well your dad’s) moneys worth 🙂 I’ll have to find this honey oat bread recipe that I had found online. It was really delicious and easy and I’m pretty sure you’d have the ingredients on hand.

    I’ve had a Zojirushi for 9 years – I think it is the precursor to your machine. I used to bake bread in it about 3 times a week, plus making pizza dough, etc. The recipes that came with my machine don’t all work, though – the pizza dough recipe in particular is just not right. It comes out like soup. I use a Fleischmann’s Yeast cookbook that I acquired a number of years ago, and all the recipes seem to translate nicely to the machine. I don’t like to bake a loaf in mine any more, though, because the pan is so old that it’s hard to disengage the bread when finished!

    You will have fun with the cake and jam settings, too, and I bet you have all the makings of a cake in your pantry. Mine makes a chocolate-chocolate chip cake that is really yummy!

    This is our family favorite bread machine bread. It comes from “The Bread Machine Cookbook II” by Donna Rathmell German
    Honey Bread
    Water: 1 cup
    Vegetable oil : 1 tablespoon
    honey : 1/4 cup
    salt: 1 teaspoon
    oatmeal: 1 cup
    bread flour: 2 cups
    yeast: 2 1/2 teaspoons

    Put the ingredients in according to your machine guidelines and push start! I think you’ll find this to be a favorite too.

    Susan, my bread machine warms the ingredients for me, so I don’t have to worry about temperature that much, but you will definitely kill your yeast if it’s too hot. I’d recommend trying a candy thermometer. They’re very handy to have in the kitchen anyway.

    My bread machine makes tall loaves. We always just cut the loaf in half and then slice each half to make sandwiches or toast. It works perfectly. (I have to cut them in half to fit them in the loaf bags anyway. Why can’t anyone make bread machine loaf sized plastic bags??)

    Bread machines are one of the best things to get at a thrift store because many people receive them as gifts but never use them. I got mine for $4 at Goodwill.
    But I would NOT say no to a nice new one like Crystal got as a gift. Lucky girl!

    Our favorite “go-to bread” recipe is my honey oatmeal bread. It is done in the bread machine and I love either making the big loaf that the bread machine makes or just doing up the dough in the machine and then making rolls. 🙂 The rolls end up being like those hard crusted rolls you find at the grocery store’s bakery dept. but soooo much better!

    I have a Kenwood Rapid Bake BM200 Breadmaker bought for me by my kind mother-in-law only we seem to have lost the instructions in one of our many house moves. Looking at your picture and reading your recipe (plus wanting to do it for the “use from the pantry challenge”) has made me long for homemade bread. I would be very grateful, (so will my children and husband) if someone could tell me how to use it!!

    It appears to have different programmes but I can”t remember what they are for and after several frantic hours of trying to find the instruction (and free recipe booklet) I have resolved to the fact they are well and truly lost:(

    I make Garlic Parmesan Bread with my bread machine. It is a pantry recipe! You don’t have to include the Parmesan cheese if you don’t have it on hand.

    I too use the recipe for clone of a cinnabon on allrecipes…They are so easy to throw together and delicious…I love to make them a day ahead and keep in the fridge until ready to use, just take them out and let the rise before baking:)!

    I use my fresh milled flour and my standard bread recipe for cinnamon rolls. I don’t need extra sugar in the dough because of the simple, yummy cream cheese icing I use.
    Basic dough for loaves, rolls, or cinnamon rolls:
    1 1/2 c warm buttermilk (regular milk is ok in a pinch)
    1 egg
    1/3 cup vegetable oil
    1/3 cup sugar, or sucanant
    4 1/2 cups fresh milled flour
    1/2 c instant potato flakes (makes a lighter consistency)
    1 tbs yeast
    2 tsp salt

    Add ingredients to breadmaker in order listed. when dough cycle is complete, roll out the dough to about 1 inch thick. Spread with soft butter or magarine, sprinke with a 1/4 cup cinnamon sugar mixture and then spread 1/2 cup brown sugar over the top of the cinnamon mixture. (optional…sprinkle raisins or craisins on top of brown sugar) roll up dough, cut into 1 inch slices and place in well greased pans. Let rise til double. Bake for 350 degrees for 15 minutes.
    soften 4 oz of cream cheese. sift in 1 1/2 to 2 cups powered sugar and stir til blended. Add OJ to reach a pourable consistency (it doen’st take much, just a tablespoon or two!!!) pour over warm rolls.
    (This is one of the most popular dishes at our Teacher Appreciation breakfasts!)

    Your recipe is pretty much the Buttery Bread Machine Rolls from Recipezaar and they are a favorite at our house. I make them for everything. They also freeze very well. I do brush them with butter as soon as they come out of the oven. I got my bread maker at a garage sale and I love it. I really mainly only use it for making the dough.

    Here are some of my favorite bread machine recipes:

    I know it isn’t a bread machine recipe, but if you are going to make cinnamon rolls I highly recommend Pioneer Woman’s cinnamon rolls. They are unbelievable.

    And THE BEST WHOLE WHEAT BREAD RECIPE EVER is Marilyn Moll’s recipe:
    I just use her bread machine instructions.

    I was wondering about freezing too. I’m looking to participate in some OAMC and read somewhere that you should freeze the dough in “balls” separately, before the first rise. Then take them out, let them rise, and bake. Once place actually said to let them rise, punch them down and let them rise again before baking? Crystal, have you had any “freezing” experience with this particular recipe? I would love to have ready made dough in the freezer. Thanks!

    I don’t have a bread machine. If I were to do this by hand, how long does your bread cycle run, as in how long should I knead and rise the dough before I shape it into rolls. Thanks, sounds so good!

    Here is a link to my homemade whole wheat bread. It is so yummy and healthy too. It is by far the best whole wheat bread recipe I have ever made. I freshly grind my wheat berries and there is freshly ground flax seed in it as well which makes it even healthier. Enjoy!!

I wasn’t expecting such an awesome machine for my first one! It took me a few trials to nail down white bread, but I’ve managed to find a good, fast and easy one.     I made this recipe today and it was AMAZING. The only addition was that I added 2 heaping teaspoons of gluten since I used freshly ground whole wheat flour for half the flour. Loved it!! In answer to some of the questions about bread machines, I have a vitamix and grind my own flour, but I use a Breadman Ultimate Plus machine. I got it at for $60-$70 and have been really happy with it. It has a stainless steel finish and does well with whole wheat bread.

    Crystal: thank you so much for the recipe. I made these rolls last night and my boys gobbled them up. I rolled all the dough-balls out and put half in the freezer. I was afraid we would have too many leftover and they wouldn’t get ate. Should have baked them all. My husband commented that this was a definite “make again” recipe.   • I love the breadmaker, I’m making bread right now! Someone asked for maker recommendations, and after much review, I opted for the Panasonic SD-yd250, and I love it. It was under $100 when I got it. I have read that some of the best breadmakers are the ones like moneysavingmom just got though, I believe those are the top of the line, brand wise, but that was out of my budget at the time and having never tried breadmakers before I was hesitant to go right to the more exp. brands. My panasonic breadmaker has been awesome though, I really love it and always recommend it to friends asking about breadmakers. I know they’re a bit expensive, but totally worth it if you love fresh bread, it’s super quick to just through all the ingredients in, and let it do all the work!

    No one has suggested making soft pretzels yet…. I like this recipe (but I don’t know who to credit) but I’m still searching for the perfect cheesy-mustard recipe.

    Also- I often make a batch of bread dough and wrap it around hot dogs or sausages (We used to have these pigs-in-a-blanket for school lunches on Fridays). They are a big hit with the kids and my husband loves to take them out in the field with him…. it doesn’t matter if they get smooshed in a backpack. And I’ve rolled dough out for “dinner-namon” rolls…. just sprinkle with leftover taco meat, cheese, pulverized veggies, tomato sauce…. (or chicken & white sauce) or whatever leftovers you have…. roll up like cinnamon rolls, let rise and bake. Super-easy finger food dinner that can be eaten in the yard while running through the sprinklers. (Yes, I have summer on my mind…. it is cold here.)

    Soft Pretzels
    2 LB
    1 1/4 cups water
    3 1/2 cups flour
    1 tsp salt
    1 egg yolk
    1 Tbsps oil
    1 tsp lemon juice
    2 Tbsps sugar
    1/8 tsp white pepper
    1 Tbsps active dry yeast

    1 egg white
    1 Tbsp water

    kosher salt or sesame seeds or parm sprinkles

    Use dough setting. Remove from breadmaker when done.
    Punch down and on a lightly floured surface cut the dough into 16 equal pieces. Roll each piece of dough into a rope about 16″ long and shape into a pretzel.

    Place the pretzels on a greased baking sheet 1 1/2″ apart. Brush with combined egg white and water. Sprinkle with toppings. Bake in preheated 375 degree (F) oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until gold brown.

    I am making these right now… and I am VERY excited!! Ha ha. Just wanted to say how much I love my bread machine. I got it as a wedding gift. I think it took me like 3 years to get it out of the box. Now I used it almost every week. LOVE IT. It’s also good to know that I might be able to get one at a thrift store if I burn this one out!!

    I need some help! I tried this recipe and others, my rolls just don’t seem to rise enough. I’m wondering if I got the milk too hot or not hot enough. Do you use a thermometer to check the temp of the milk?
    I used 1/2 arthur court white bread flour and 1/2 prairie gold whole wheat.

    Thanks for sharing this recipe. I tried them & they came out perfectly & were so delicious. I thought I was going to freeze some of them, but they disappeared far too fast for that.

    I made these rolls this week and they were the best rolls I’ve ever had! They turned out perfect … I did add a bit more sugar to make the dough and as soon as they came out of the oven, I brushed honey butter on them. SO YUMMY!! I froze the few that we didn’t eat and they come out perfectly after just a few seconds in the microwave. My kids and husband loved them in their lunches as ham and cheese rolls. I will make this recipe over and over again! Thanks for another winner, Crystal! I love so many of your recipes. 🙂

    Could someone help me–I don’t generally do well with yeast breads and this one is no exception. I’ve made this 3 times and and each time they just don’t rise well. What am I missing? HELP?????? (I do love the taste, but boy, are they heavy!)

    When using whole wheat flour, I like to add a tablespoon of vital wheat gluten. The gluten keeps the rolls from being too dense and gives that same soft feeling that all-purpose flour gives to rolls.
