These prices amaze me!! Being from B.C Canada…..Vancouver Island to be exact, our prices are out to lunch!! ( hee hee ) A gallon of milk $4.79 – $5.79,
butter on sale $3.99 – regular over $5.00. Cheese – a 907 gram brick $13.99 regular!! – on sale $9.99. I can’t believe those loaves of bread she got for .33cents!! A sale price here for a loaf is .99 cents ….then I’ll buy 5 otherwise I bake bread every other day…or I get my teenage daughter to – I’ve trained her in the fine art of loading the bread maker! 🙂 And then there’s fruits and vegetables! Example peppers – $4.99 a lb , a head of lettuce $2.79 – $3.79, a cucumber is $2.00, bananas are .77 – .99cents a lb. Suffice it to say – I bake a lot, I have a thousand square foot garden, fruit trees ( mine and trees around town where I get boxes of fruit for the cost of a few pies or a few jars of jam ). I typically make 70 – 100 jars of jam for my family of 5 of wild blackberries and equally free local apples. Plus all the freezing and canning from our garden. As well we fish and vacuum pack salmon and halibut. It’s unbelievable the cost of living here! We work hard to feed our family in a realistic way – $13.99 for cheese!!! I don’t think so!! 🙂
I am sorry it is so expensive where you are. 🙁 However, with all the home grown food you make and garden fresh things you can – I want to come live at your house! Yum! 🙂 Sounds like you are doing an amazing job where you are at!
Ha! 🙂 Well – in an attempt to stop living pay check to pay check we are thinking about building a guest cabin ( tourism is HUGE here ) so one day that might be possible! 🙂 The gardens are a lot of work but why go out to work to make money to buy food….I just cut out the middle man. That also allows me to be home for my three children and participate in field trips. Thanks for the compliment!
I love your meal plans. I already coupon and keep a small stockpile, but I really think that menu planning will be the key to my staying in budget. I had planned to come in under budget, but I shopped some amazing sales. I picked up 18 lbs produce, 3 gallons of milk, 3 packages of cheese, over 25 lbs of chicken/pork, 3 freezer bags, 7 boxes of Capri Sun (for wee ball/t-ball drinks), 4 salad dressing, ketchup, mayo, jelly, donuts, paprika, 2 tortillas, bbq sauce, 4 V8 juices, 2 cereal, 3 cleaning supplies, Advil, 4 soda, and 4 packs of Huggies for $84 and will get back $5 MIR and $3 cash back apps. My budget is $80, and I don’t include rebates so I was a little over. Since I had already made my weekly menu, dairy, produce, tortillas, and paprika were really the only things I needed this week; everything else was just at a good stock up price and will be used later.
Those are some fantastic deals!! Was that all at one store? I love reading about other people having fabulous grocery hauls! And yes – menu planning is what keeps me on track too!
I shopped at three stores: Kroger, CVS, and Food Depot. Food Depot is relatively new to my area. They claim that they charge customers the cost plus 10% as their fee so that customers save an average of 40% off regular grocery stores. I have been buying almost all my meat and produce there and have found amazing prices. I picked up the diapers, cereal, milk, and Advil at CVS. I stacked store and manufacturer coupons, ECBs, and a $10 CVS gift card I earned through Swagbucks and spent less than $2 out of pocket there. My Kroger shopping included a lot of Mega Event items that will go into my stockpile.
Shaw’s had butter for $1.88 a pound if you bought six pounds either last week or the week before so I stocked up. Otherwise it’s like $4 and change around here these days. And that’s for the store brands 🙁
How are you liking the Snap by Groupon? I’m struggling to keep up with Ibotta so I don’t know if I should try anymore.
I find Snap to be easier. You don’t have to watch videos to “earn” the rebates and you can shop at any store. I also do Checkout 42, which is a lot like Snap. I like that both Snap and Checkout 42, you just upload the receipts, the store doesn’t matter and you don’t need to scan the bar codes of all of the items. I find I use IBotta less and less since I’ve downloaded the other 2.
Thanks Brandi. I’ll check those out. I think you’ve nailed my problem with Ibotta. I shop at four or five different stores routinely so I can’t keep track of which store’s receipt I’m supposed to be scanning.
Ibotta is my least favorite. It’s the most time consuming iny opinion, and I rarely end up buying things that even qualify. But I know others who love it! 🙂
I am hoping that the $1.89 butter sticks around through Easter. They often have it for a good price for several weeks this time of year.
Wow, butter for $1.89 lb. !!! The last time Fry’s had it on sale for $1.99 lb. I thought that was great. I bought 5 lbs.
It wasn’t an advertised price, so I was happy to accidentally stumble on it. Actually, my husband works close to Aldi and just texted me to tell me he is going to stop on his way home from work and buy a bunch more. 🙂
