The following post is part of a two-part series sponsored by Yahoo! Every time someone clicks here to make Yahoo! their homepage, they’re showing their support for my charity.
A few weeks ago, my advertising agency contacted me about a special promotion with Yahoo! Typically, I turn down most of these opportunities because they aren’t a good fit for my site and it’s not a win-win sort of situation.
But this particular opportunity was different: Yahoo! was offering to give $10,000 to the charity of my choice in exchange for me to ask you to change your homepage to Yahoo! for two days.
$10,000 to the charity of my choice? That was something I couldn’t turn down. Not after Stephanie, Tsh, Lindsey, Shaun, and others blogged about their trip with Compassion to the Philippines.
I’d read their stories. I’d seen their pictures. And my heart was moved.
We already give 100% of all proceeds from private ad sales here to Compassion and Show Hope. Our family sponsors two children through Compassion personally, as well. But I wanted to do more.
My heart was burdened and overwhelmed for these people who have nothing. Who are grateful for the tiniest act of kindness. Who are living in poverty beyond what we can imagine.
No, I couldn’t turn down $10,000 to give to Compassion. If $38 helps feed and clothe and educate one needy child for a month, think with me how far $10,000 would go?
So I’m thrilled to be partnering with Yahoo! today and tomorrow to ask you to change your homepage to Yahoo! It literally takes five seconds to do and by doing this through my link here, you are showing your support for Compassion.
Will you help me help those in impoverished countries? I’d love to have you consider sponsoring a child through Compassion. However, if that’s very much outside your budget, will you change your homepage to Yahoo! for today and tomorrow? Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping these children and families in desperate need.
I usually don’t ask for this, but if you would be willing to share this post on Twitter, Facebook and/or your blog, I’d be humbly grateful. Thank you so much!

I’m always a little skeptical of these “Christian” charities, but Compassion has a 4 star rating on Charity Navigator, if that helps anyone feel better about doing this.
Laura says
I’m happy to change my homepage, too. Compassion is my very favorite charity. We sponsor a child through them as well. $10,000 makes an amazing difference in the lives of children.

Wow, what a wonderful opportunity! I just changed my homepage and also shared this on facebook. I am so excited to participate — the Lord has really been impressing it upon my heart recently that there are so many more ways to give other than financially. My husband has been laid off for almost 7 months now, and we have had to be very careful about our spending, so I missed being able to give generously. So I am especially happy to participate and grateful for the opportunity! Thank you for sharing. 🙂

pantrygirl says
done.
Lauren says
I am sort of confused. Are a specific amount of people supposed to change their homepages for Yahoo to donate 10,000 dollars to Compassion (ex: 10,000 people to donate 10,000 dollars) or will they donate simply because you asked your readers to change their homepages? I was going to post this to Facebook to get more people to change their homepage as well, but did not know if getting more people helped Compassion earn more money or not. I hope this question makes sense.
Crystal says
I’m donating personally ($1 per homepage changed) in addition to Yahoo!’s $10,000 donation. I was sorting through the legalities of that with my ad agency before I could share the details on that here. My post next Tuesday will explain specifically the details on that, so if you want to wait to post on your Facebook page until then, that’s totally fine.
Thank you so much!

Just a side note. Another way to help without costing you anything but time is to go to freerice.com and play their games. Each time you get a correct answer, they donate 20 pieces of rice to someone in need. Try to play for like 10 minutes a day and those 20 pieces quickly add up.
Jennifer says
So fantastic! I also love knowing that I can really trust this, since I’ve been following regularly since January and I know you have a relationship with Compassion and this is the first time readers have been asked to participate. I think this is a blessing for both those of us who can participate and for the children who Compassion reaches; I hope you aren’t discouraged by naysayers and rest in the comfort of our Lords arms 🙂
Thanks again, so happy I found your website!
Deborah G says
Yahoo is already set as one of my homepage tabs. Will it count?

Philanthropy is great but I second Karen. Not all people reading this blog are Christians. Some might be even beyond religion. I’m sure no one is trying to stir up a controversy. Different people have different views that should be gracefully accepted.

will do… what are the stipulations to receiving the 10k gift? do you have to reach a certain number of people changing over? a little confused as to what they’re asking of you…
praise God, though, for His provision for children in desperate need of basic necessities and the love of Jesus 🙂 we sponsor three children and have never felt the financial strain. He blesses those who give!
Crystal says
They just asked for me to do this post and another post coming up next week. I hope that helps!

I believe that most anything and aid belong together. Any group who wants to help another is a-ok in my book. Why shouldn’t a group of like-minded people determine to make a difference?

Wow! That’s so awesome! We currently sponsor a child through Compassion-it’s a faith step cause we have to trust the Lord for our finances even though we can’t afford to be sponsoring. But it’s seed we’re sowing every month and I know He’ll meet our needs.
Will definitely be spreading the word through FB and twitter!

Ginger M. says
Yahoo already is my homepage. Is there anything that I can do to help? I sponsor a little girl in India, Sabina, through Children International, who are not affiliated with any particular religion. They are an excellent charity and are doing a lot of good. Highly recommend them. Looking back at Sabina’s pictures, I can tell the exact moment that I became her sponsor …. because her eyes changed.
Jen K. says
Reset it to your homepage through Crystal’s link! I doubt Yahoo! keeps track of all their homepages!
Meghan says
We also sponsor through Children International, which we choose because it does not include the aspect of teaching children about Jesus as part of helping those in dire poverty. They are a great charity that has been certified by the BBB and charity watch dogs. I have a friend who actually raised enough money to build a Children International center in Africa—she was our motivation for sponsoring our own child!
Amy says
Done! What an amazing opportunity!
And I am falling in love with everyone of the children on the web site. Thank you for providing the link to Compassion – I have wanted to sponsor a child for awhile, but was never sure of which organization to go through. I take your blog post as a sign!

Compassion really is a phenomenal organization. Going to the Philippines with them showed me just what kind of life-changing work they are doing (with integrity, no less) and I am so happy to be able to continue to promote and support their ministry.
I’ll definitely be sharing this with my readers as well (and yes, I’ll make Yahoo my homepage). What a fun surprise to see this today!

Crystal,
Thank you so much for posting about this.
My husband and I have been thinking about sponsoring a child for a while now but we were not sure which foundation to trust so I will talk to him about the possibility of sponsoring a child through Compassion. Meanwhile I set my homepage to Yahoo.
Let me know what I can do as a blogger to promote this to get more people to change their homepage to Yahoo and sponsor a child through Compassion.
Thank you

Compassion is at the top for % of the money raised actually going directly to the people who need it. If you’re going to sponsor a child, they are the best national organization out there to go with.
