I loved this video and article from ABC News on How To Work From Home. And I was especially excited to see them feature my friend, SarahMae, from Like a Warm Cup of Coffee (whom I get to meet at Relevant in October!).
While these ideas might not work for you or your situation, they very well might serve as inspiration for something you can do. I truly believe — especially with the advent of the internet — that anyone can work from home successfully if you’re willing to be creative, work very hard and persevere.

I just love Sarah Mae- and I too can’t wait to meet her and Jessica Heights at Relevant!
I also hope to gain the knowlege and strength at Relevant to persue this type of WAH perspective- it would really help us out in my household.
Thanks for the link Crystal!
Can’t wait to meet you, Rachel!
Crystal, I am wondering how you balance life with the kids, homeschooling, cooking(!) and working. I do work from home but I find that trying to find time for things like exercise cuts into the time I would have otherwise spent working (since I have no nanny or sitter). You mentioned getting up early. Do you find that you get up early and go to bed late just to get everything done? I’m just curious. Since I had to let my nanny go I have found the balance act difficult.
Thanks so much for sharing this, Crystal! I really thought the woman who is doing Social Media consulting for small businesses really hit a great idea with that one. It’s so true that many businesses aren’t social on Facebook or Twitter.
Just for kicks I looked up an old company that I used to work for to see if they were on Facebook or Twitter yet and low and behold they still aren’t.
I agree; I think it’s a brilliant idea!
My problem is I just don’t know what I’m good at other than teaching. I enjoy lots of things, but I don’t know if it’s things I can really create a job with. The thing I enjoy most is teaching. I was an elementary teacher for years before staying home with my 3 children. But there are so many great educational blogs that I just don’t know if I could find a place among them all. And I’m really afraid of going back to what it was like before I became a stay at home mom and had so little time for things that are truly important. Another thing I really enjoy is cleaning and organizing (not that I’m always perfect at that in my own…but I do enjoy it and I enjoy helping others with it)..but that would take me out of the home which I don’t want to do. Any ideas for either of these “likes.” Help!
very inspiring! thanks so much for posting this Crystal! I started up a blog in May….we’ll see what happens! =)
This is so cool! Thank you. I’m an adjunct professor at the local university and my husband is currently in Afhganistan. I know I need to create a “job” that can move with us as we move for the Army…. I’ve had a personal blog for about 6 years but haven’t done much with it… I think it’s time for me to man up! I’ve had a blog about being a military wife but I’ve kept that private… I’m now thinking that might be a good niche. Anyway… thanks for your thoughts in this and the following post!
I have been looking for work at home ideas. I am a stay at home mom of two girls, 3 and 2 years old. I, on request, install accounting software for my former job. The accounting firm split partners and I have been laid off since this tax season. Any ideas?
What about contacting other small businesses in your area and seeing if you can install accounting software (or other software) for them? Go knock on doors and I bet some of them would take you up on it!
What I am interested in though is fairly higher paying WAH options because I make a very good salary and now want to stay home. We re cutting things left and right and even considering a move but right now I make more than DH. We are trying to save his income but have not been able to do just yet. I am pursuing online teaching at a university but those jobs are few and far between. Sigh, it is a tough pull between a career I love and pays well and the child I love more than anything and want to be with. Suggestions?
There are definitely WAH options which pay six figures — but that takes time to build up and is usually in the instance of a woman owning her own business and having people working for her, not her just telecommuting for a company.
I’d suggest starting something on the side right now — while you’re working — and see if you can get that off the ground and to a point where you can come home. What are your skills and gifts? What’s your current position? I’d be glad to help brainstorm some ideas.
I LOVE likeawarmcupofcoffee.com! My friend is also speaking at the relevant conference. Her name is Serena Woods and she is the author of Grace is for Sinners. She also blogs at graceisforsinner.com Her story is a beautiful example of God’s grace and her blog is so warm, thoughtful and inspiring. Hope you get a chance to meet her too!
I’m looking forward to meeting Serena — along with so many other wonderful women at the conference!
I have been praying and searching for a work from home job for the past year. Nothing ever seemed to pan out…until yesterday. A former boss of mine is writing a couple of books, and she wants me to type/edit everything for her. Not sure how long it will last, but this is going to open many doors. I am so excited!
Woohoo! Once you’re finished with that, go start pursuing other transcription work opportunities. They are definitely out there — especially for small business owners.
