Move over mashed peas. Silas has discovered pizza and, no surprise, he loves it! In fact, he ate a whole piece yesterday.
Did I mention that he’s 10 months old?? Or that his sisters barely knew what table food was at 10 months?
Whoever said that boys can eat a lot certainly got that right. This child never ceases to amaze me. He’s hungry from sun-up to sundown–and then he wants to nurse multiple times at night!
It seems I spend most of my day trying to figure out what to feed him next! But oh how we love our little hunky guy–big appetite and all. He’s a keeper, that’s for sure!
Angie says
How cute! Just wait until he’s a teenager! I grew up in a family of all girls. When my sister was dating her now husband, my dad used to introduce him as, “This is John, he lives in our refrigerator!” Mom said her grocery bill almost doubled when he started coming for dinner! 🙂
misty says
i just want to say…the whole boys eat more than girls thing is not always true. my friend and i have two kids that are a day apart and well my daughter is definitely the eater (my friend has a boy and doesnt eat nearly as much). my daughter never stops eating all day long that is all she wants to do. she was getting up though the night till she was 20 months old, she is now 23 months. she eats way more than our three year old daughter as well. i don’t know what she does with all of it, she only weighs 28 lbs. our oldest only weighs 30 lbs. our oldest is the picky eater and also eats like a bird. all kids are different, i don’t think just because of their gender they eat more.
Dionne Merriott says
I have three boys 17, 12, and 12 plus an 8 year old daughter and they can all eat! Our grocery budget is $600 a month!
Christy Boyd says
My younger three (3, 2, and 1) eat ALL day!!! It is amazing how much they consume until I fall exhausted at the end of the day. I realize those little men need all that food because they are constantly on the move. Boys are fun of course so are my girls!!
Amy F says
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing! Can’t believe how fast he is growing!?!
Becky says
At about 10 or 11 months, my son was out-eating me, even with my nursing appetite. I would make oatmeal for breakfast, and he would eat 2 or 3 huge bowlfuls. He’s 3 now, and has slowed down. Seems like that age, just under a year, was when he actually ate the most. But he is still a big eater.
That’s cute.
Robyn says
We have a 22-month-old boy and he can put it away! He out-eats me quite frequently (and I’m 6 months pregnant) and sometimes my husband as well. Just today for lunch he ate an entire almond butter and jelly sandwich, a clementine orange, a banana, a graham cracker, three slices of cheddar cheese (extra sharp or he wants nothing to do with it — that’s my boy!), and several pieces of broccoli. That’s about average. He rarely snacks and we only give him water to drink, so his calories are all coming from his meals, but still.
I laugh when I start talking about grocery budgets and people tell me, “but he’s so little it’s more like you’re budgeting for two than three.” Yeah right! He’s been a big eater from the very beginning. Number two is also a boy, by the way. At least sending them to college will save us money over feeding them!
RACHEL says
OMG!!
CRYSTAL HE IS SOOOOO CUTE!!!!
Time flies by- 10 mos. old? Wow!
Sarah says
3 boys and I’m in the same boat. The last one is 7 months old and is hungry all the time, too. He also wants to nurse so much during the night. I was wondering why he’s doing this. Do you nurse during the day as well? I was thinking maybe I haven’t been nursing him enough during the day. I would love to know what you find helps!
martie says
OMG!!! How time flys!!! He is adorable, God Bless you and your family.
Jamie says
hee, hee, that is funny. i was always amazed with your grocery budget and said “if she had two boys like ME…..”. but i’m sure you will find a way to work in more food at minimal cost. boys DO love to eat. and i DO spend most of my day figuring out what they will eat NEXT.
Amy says
Absolutely adorable! 🙂
And I hear ya; I have 14-month-old twin boys and they have definitely increased our grocery bills!
Crystal says
I have a son about the same age and it’s the same thing with him! He is almost 25 lbs now and already in size 5 diapers. Yikes.
rita says
Just wait until he is a teeanager!!! Boy, can they EAT!
Karen says
It’s not just boys! My second daughter ate like that at 10 months! Entire muffins, entire slices of pizza, etc. Ay yi yi!
But they’re infinitely worth it. 🙂
Britney says
He is so darn cute!! Let him eat all the pizza he wants! You are so lucky that he will, if it is not in a chicken nugget form, my son wont touch it!
Kate says
Sounds like my son! He’s 3 1/2 and he ate 4 packets of oatmeal this morning for breakfast, followed by 2 glasses of milk… hope his appetite doesn’t get too much bigger! 🙂
Vanessa says
I have 2 boys, and from the start my farm raised father-in-law has insisted that I need to plant a garden. He is right. My almost-three-year old eats just as much as I do at meals and is on the lower end of the average height and weight for his age. My father-in-law says his mother fixed pinto beans in addition to whatever meal she fixed for supper. Sounds like this is where we will all be headed!
alisha says
LOVE IT! ;O)
Charity says
This makes me smile! I have two little girls (just turned 4 and 2 1/2) and my baby boy just turned 1year. He is a bottomless pit!! My husband says he has hollow legs. He can out-eat me at any given time and I have yet to figure out where he puts it!! From the second you strap him into his highchair he doesn’t stop saying “mo bite!” (more bite). So funny!
Heather T says
Gotta love boys I have three of them ranging from 2-5 yeah already there are days when I can’t believe how much they eat, I am so happy that I am a great coupon user we will really need it! Good luck with your little guy.

Aw, my first post got lost somehow… I was saying that all three of my kids eat unbelievable amounts… At 13, 15, and 18, I just can’t put out enough food. And it’s tricky–the middle one cannot eat dairy (no easy casseroles with cheese) and the others are sensorial about taste and texture–the oldest can i.d. milk from a couple sips (store it came from, % fat content, and whether it’s organic!) –so some foods I present just don’t go over as well as I’d like. Still, once I started reading your blog, I was able to decrease the food/household item/dog food budget from $1,000 to $600-700 month, in Silicon Valley, CA.)
Kerry D. says
P.S. And about my kids who eat so much–none of them are overweight at all. Not a bit. This is just to break even, and keep growing.
Kerry D. says
@Kerry D., Somehow my longer post isn’t showing… so sorry if somehow it pops up in duplicate–

Welcome to my life! I don’t think it’s boys though–my 15 year old daughter out eats the boys some days… But, at 13, 15 and 18 (boys on each end) they eat unbelievable amounts. This is a huge problem. And like one of your other readers, we have to have dairy free options (no casseroles with cheese) because of the DD. Further, they’re a little sensorial about taste and texture, so some foods don’t go over as well as I’d like. (The oldest, given a glass of milk, can ID the store it came from, fat content and whether its organic. ) It’s been a huge accomplishment, since I started reading your blog, to bring our food/household item/dogfood budget down from $1,000 to $600-700 a month (in Silicon Valley–CA.)

My first child didn’t eat table food until over a year, but my second child had it as soon as she had a few teeth! Ha ha. I’m amazed that you still nurse so many times at night. I don’t get up anymore at night when the baby reaches 7 months old!
Laura says
he is so cute time went by fast lol my 2 boys are always hungry my oldest 8 comes home from school and can eat a full meal then when we have dinner he eats that plus he wants seconds and dessert now the little one 2 yr old wow he can eat he wakes up ready to eat doesnt stop til its bedtime i can only imagine how much food we’ll go through when they get older
Amy Wiltfong says
My son, Connor, is 6 and he eats non-stop all day. I have been warned by friends that it only gets worse and then they start bringing their friends over and you have to feed them too!! My family is all girls so this boy thing is very new to me. They may eat a lot but there is a very special bond between a mother & son. I have also heard that boys never outgrow hugging and snuggling with mom.
Heidi says
What a sweet little boy! Thanks for sharing a pic of your cutie pie! I can say the same thing with our soon to be 15 month old son! Our daughter is 3 and eats less than him!
Heather says
That’s so funny. I have a 10 month old son who won’t eat anything. His sister ate everything she could find at that age. He absolutely loves pickles and olives. Peaches are okay once in a while. Other than that he is just nursing. If we manage to get anything else into his mouth so he can try it he acts like we are trying to poison him.
MaryEllen says
Cute, cute, cute! I hear ya about boys eating a lot. My 2 year old son eats as much as both my husband and me. And he can spot a pizza box from a mile away! Silas is a doll!
Lara says
I’ve got a 4 yr old and 20 month old – both boys. I’ve often joked that we can just forget about saving for college, we’ll just be saving up to feed them until they get there! Seriously, they both eat more then me – and sometimes more than my husband, too! My four year old typically eats 5 (yes 5!) regular size pancakes for breakfast on Saturdays!
Jennifer says
You might want to start a special savings account now for buying groceries when he becomes a teen. 🙂 My word! My boy eats all! the! time! His sister is constantly complaining, “Mom, he ate all the ________”. Just fill in the blank. His dad’s not much different. Their both rail thin, too. Thanks for sharing your cute little man. Now I want another baby and pizza for dinner!
Jenni @ Life from the Roof says
Thanks so much for sharing this. I always wondered how you were able to stretch your budget so far with two little girls. I have a 2 1/2 year old boy and another 6 month old son, and my 2 year old already eats 2 slices of pizza at dinner (and he would eat more if we let him!) I’ve been able to keep our food budget within the $250/month range so far, but once the baby really starts on solids, I know it will go up.
Angela says
I feel your pain! 🙂 I have a 4 year old boy and a 15 month old boy and just in the last month we went through 3 lbs of grapes in 2 days, 2 lbs of strawberries in 1 day, and 5 lbs of bananas in less than a week. I am very scared of my future grocery bills!! 🙂 Thankfully we have a great produce place (you have to buy in bulk which these days works just fine!) so that helps A LOT with the grocery budget!
Camille says
@Angela, LOL!! We go through 6-7 lbs of bananas a WEEK thanks to my 1 year old son.
Ana Maria says
My youngest is 18 months old and she puts away food like you wouldn’t believe! She is such a good eater…way better than her brothers who are 5 & 4! I mean she eats ANYTHING I give her which is awesome to at least have one of the kids not be a picky eater, but it’s amazing how much food she can fit in her tiny stomach…plus she is only in the 50th percentile for weight so it’s not like she’s getting chunky. She just eats REALLY well for her age I guess 🙂
rachaelp says
He’s SO adorable!! I have a boy a couple weeks younger than yours and he eats like there’s no tomorrow too. So different from his older sister!
Jessica-MomForHim says
With the title of the post, I totally thought you were going to announce you were expecting again!! 🙂
Rebekah says
I understand! I have an 8-month old who is hardly ever satisfied! He’s nursing and eating solid food and he too still insists on eating at night. I’m hoping he’ll give up that night feeding soon though. This momma is worn out! 🙂
Emily C says
This makes me feel better about my budget–it’s definitely higher than yours.
But I’ve got two boys, and a husband who requires a lot more calories than most (chronically underweight, autoimmune disorder).
Emily says
My almost 2 year old son outeats his 5 year old sister on a daily basis. In fact, sometimes he eats more than me at breakfast if we are having his favorite yogurt pancakes. I fear for his teenage years!!
Carol says
Silas is so adorable! I’m glad to see that there are others here that have girls who eat a lot! All of my friends have only boys; and I have 2 teenage daughters. My girls have always eaten as much as any of their boys. (And my girls have always been thin) One week in January, they had gone through 16 lbs of oranges, and 6 lbs of bananas in 3 days (and that was just part of what they ate for snacks in between meals!) LOL I can’t complain, because they eat healthy food. But I do have to go to the store for produce at least 2 or 3 times a week, because I can’t fit enough in my fridge. And although the food bill tends to average more like $100./ week; it buys me a LOT of food, and it’s a whole lot cheaper than being sick from eating low quality food! I used to spend closer to $300. a week for the same amount of food. This blog and others have been of tremendous value in helping me get my costs down! Thank you!
Kelly says
Crystal, we are redoing our budget too. Our 6-month-old baby girl is an eater. She weighed 19 pounds, 8 oz. on breastmilk alone. Look out baby food…here we come! We are trying to buy organic for her. Silas is adorable and has a big baby head like our little girl. She has a little more hair, though, and is currently sporting a mohawk!
Amara says
My little one, Seth, is now 11 months (boo hoo) and was born last April 17th. I’ve had fun watching Silas grow alongside my Seth, via the blogworld.
Your Silas is one cute guy. I only know ONE cuter baby. Ha.
Kristy Howard says
We have 2 girls and 1 boy (and expecting another boy this summer!)… I can certainly relate! Our son, who is almost 2 yrs old, eats as much or more than his older sisters put together! My mom always said my brother had a “hallow leg”… now I know why!

I can relate. I have an almost-four-year-old son who can (and would if we let him) eat all day, and never be satisfied. It has been that way since he was an infant, wanting to nurse constantly. My husband and I recently discussed increasing our monthly grocery budget some to “beef up” meals a bit because my son is such a big eater. I know we will make it work, but fear what our grocrey budget will look like when he is a teenagr… and we have more kids… Yikes! At least he isn’t picky.
Judy says
My baby is turning 1 this week and he’s eating like crazy. I feel like I’m constantly feeding him and an hour later he’s starving again. I’m in the process of weaning which isn’t helping, but he would just nurse all day if he could so I’m hoping he’ll take to solids more once he’s weaned. I guess he’ll have to right?
Fawn says
I’m in the same boat, my almost 12 mo old son has a HUGE appetite! Nursing him has been a challenge simply because he wants to nurse so often, and several times at night as well……..he also eats whatever food we throw at him, lol! Sure different than my 2.5 yr. old daughter!
Love your blog, btw!
Jennifer says
I have four boys and it has certainly become a challenge as they have grown to keep them filled up! They are clearly a different breed!
Marissa says
I have four boys (9, 7, 4, 2) who all eat a lot of food. I wish my grocery budget could be lower but that is not for us. I am thankful for you and other blogs that help me find the best deals and coupons. Otherwise, my grocery budget would be double.
He is a cutie and I love the name. That is what I wanted to name our 2 year old. We went with Isaac instead.
Birgitte says
We took our skinny beanpole 18-month old to an all you can eat buffet the other night and they let him in for free…. and he proceeded to eat 1.5 adult servings!
Jenmo says
Welcome to the world of boys! Boys eat like horses! We have three boys and if I didn’t coupon, sale shop and make most food at home, we would be broke! Whenever I wonder how your grocery budget is so low, I remember that you have girls.
Dawn says
Yep! He reminds me of our 9yo son. He’s been able to out-eat his sisters since he was 2 (and they were 8 & 10)! He’s tall and eats like nothing I’ve ever seen before… without an ounce of fat on his body. We’re going to have to take out a second mortgage to feed this kid when he’s 15!
Jenn says
My son refused to eat baby food at 7 months. SEVEN!!! He was completely on table food from then on and he STILL eats so much food it’s astonishing (he’s almost 3). He can eat more pizza slices than I can on some days and he regularly eats 2-3 helpings at most meals. Nobody can ever accuse him of not having a healthy appetite! He was born big and hasn’t stopped growing at crazy rates.
Mindy says
I understand completely what everyone is saying. My five kids can all eat like adults, even the 1 year old. I just want everyone to remember that just because they CAN eat that much, doesn’t mean they SHOULD be eating that much. Many kids are overweight because of this reason alone. I have to limit portions accordingly because otherwise they will just keep eating, and besides that’s my job. Yes, my kids tell me they are still hungry sometimes but I tell them it hasn’t even hit their stomach yet and 10 minutes later they are fine and full. If we don’t set limits now, they won’t know when to say no later in life. We have to be the example..
Stephanie says
@Mindy,
I agree, my 18 month old daughter and 8 year old stepson can out eat both me and my husband. Snacks in our house are things like portions of crackers, yogurt, multigrain bread, fruit and if anyone is still hungry they are free to munch on all the veggies they can eat. Same thing with dinner, if they are still hungry there are always carrots sticks and other things like that and they can have as much as they want.
It always amazes me when my stepson will come home from school saying he is hungry, decides he doesn’t like the choices since he was holding out for cookies and waits for dinner since he isn’t so hungry after all. If either kid is acting hungry then I will press a snack on them and then it is all good.
Neither child has a weight problem and we want to keep it that way, in fact the pediatrician said that whatever we are doing keep doing it. Plus we don’t tend to keep junk food in the house anyway. I do have a fully stocked baking cabinet but if we want sweets I have to make them from scratch and the effort involved usually doesn’t make it worth it. I’m pregnant and tired.
On the other hand, we went out for our anniversary last night and the kids were very happy to have their favorite homemade cookies for dessert on a school night.
Linda in FL says
Exactly why I am doing good to spend $100 a week. I have 4 kids which includes 2 teenage boys. Yikes!
Mrs Snell says
My daughter still eats about the same amount as a fruit fly at age 4… my son consumes food by the truckload! They are both active but my 3 year old sone eats the same breakfast and lunch I do, and he is less than 1/4th my size!
Amy Ellen says
I totally know about this phenomenon!!! When we were in grad school, we spend $20 per week on groceries for our little family… we kept at that budget until my son hit about two (a little later than Silas). At that time, we also added a second daughter to our family… and the grocery budget had to grow too. Now my son is nearly eight and he eats SO MUCH!!!!! And, we have five children now… so the grocery budget has had to grow more. But, we still exercise a reasonable budget… we just have to keep re-evaluating what reasonable is.
Jenelle says
I hear ya! I have 4 boys and needless to say can use all the money saving grocery tips I can get!
Michaelene says
I hear you. We went to IHOP for “free” short stacks to benefit Children’s Miracle Network last month and our lil guy, 10 mo and about 16 lbs at the time, ate 2 pancakes on his own! He nurses 5 times during the day and a couple times at night. Now that he’s finally moving, he’s burning through anything we put in front of him.
Kristen says
Well, I have heard that boys eat more too, but you can bet my 11 month old daughter eats about twice as much as my 3.5 year old son & she has been for months now! Not much baby food eaten in our house. It seems like I can never pack enough food for her at the sitters & people give us strange looks when we order her her own kids meal…
Sharon @ UnfinishedMom says
Yep. Boys are a whole different world from girls. That’s for sure. I love that he’s 10 months and still doesn’t have much hair. Gotta love those blonds!
Kara says
My son is the same age as your Silias. I’m about ready to take him off baby food altogether. We can feed him is his dinner at 530 every night; make us something to eat and he will be in our plates if we dont watch it. Funny thing is, he will not take a regular green bean (I’ll have to try again today). But he’ll help me eat my cereal, waffles, toast, eggs anything mommy has.
maria says
my kids (6 &10) are pigs! lol They both play sports year around, and like today, we have ball practice. They will eat dinner before practice, and when they come home, have to eat again!!
There are times when I fix breakfast, and I get a tiny portion. I can either cook more, or if I’m tired, just eat whatever they *might* leave me! lol
Last week I spent $150 on groceries, and didnt go this week…..I’m crossing my fingers we can last until Sunday (grocery day)
Andrea says
So now you know what you’re in for when he gets to be a teenager! My 13-year-old son is nearly 6′ tall, wears a size 11 shoe—and man, can that kid eat! He can finish most of a large pizza by himself, and if he makes ramen noodles for a snack, we’re talking 3 packages!! All I can say is, be prepared!
maria says
@Andrea,
I feel for you. My daughter is not even 10 years old and wears a size 8.5-9 ladies! My son is almost 6 and wears a size 5 cleat. My hubby is 6’5″ and I’m 5′ 9″, so my kids are tall and big which equals lots of food!!
Sheila says
I have always been amazed at how little all of you eat. 🙂 I have two girls – neither are overweight, and they have always eaten probably twice what yours seems to – yes, even when they were the same age. My 6′ 4″, 175 pound husband eats a LOT. It’s the same when I look at $5 Dinners – they would be $10 Dinners for us! 🙂 That’s okay, we are all healthy and none of us are overweight at all, so I’m fine with it. Our grocery budget isn’t a strain, thankfully. I am actually REALLY thankful that it isn’t, because everyone can get comfortably full, and I don’t have to worry too much about it. Our appetites are due in part to how active we are, and some to just metabolism.
maria says
@Sheila,
we’re in the same boat you are. Tall parents=tall kids + active lifestyles = FOOD!!
My husband knows not to complain about food budgets! I have to double recipes too….and lucky if that is enough.
Courtney says
My two boys are 9 and 11, tall and muscular without an ounce of fat between them and they eat ALL DAY LONG. When they gripe about having to go to the grocery store with me, I remind them of who is eating most of those groceries 🙂
kelley says
What a cutie! How much does he weigh now? We go thru a loaf of bread every other day and a gallon of milk every second or third day….thank goodness we stopped with the two boys we have!
Dana @ The Coupon Challenge says
I laughed when I read this post! My son has always been a big eater. He’s now 5 and can eat 4 pieces of pizza! I’m not talking little slices either. No, he’s not overweight. He’s actually tall and lean. If he likes the meal, he’ll usually eat more than I do. His sister’s not far behind. She’s 3 and was able to put down 3 pancakes for breakfast this morning plus fruit and milk! I really can’t figure out where they put it. Children must really have hollow legs 🙂
Silas certainly is a cutie
Emily says
Its funny how with each kid its different… our first we protected so much- she never had much “junk” at all until she was closer to 3 or 4, the second a little sooner, and now our 3rd has been eating pizza, burgers and fries as from about 8 months! And once she figures out the older ones are eating candy…. oh boy! 🙂
Laura says
@Emily,
so true my first one no soda no junk food i did everything by the book now my 2nd child has it easy he had junk food and soda not to mention candy before he hit 1 he has all his teeth by then so he ate everything
Jamie says
Thank you for posting this!! I have three boys (6, 4, & 2) and a baby girl (3 mos) and I have always wondered how people get by with such low food bills and such small amounts of food for lunch on their menu plans. My boys would outeat my husband at every meal if I didn’t reign them in a little! (Don’t worry, they never go hungry.) It’s nice to know that others have the same thing going on. I guess it’s natural to have a much higher food bill with all of these boys around!
Claire at Saving Money Plan says
I was *convinced* this was going to say you were expecting! I saw the title in Twitter…”why we might be raising our grocery budget” and was like OH!!!!
Alex Hall says
I know what you mean! I had my daughter the day after you had Silas and she’ll eat a whole piece of pizza as well. I also have another daughter and three boys. I’m not convinced it’s a boy thing, though, because my daughters could compete with them any day!
Brenna says
After 1 girl I too am still suprised how much my 21-month-old son eats! He was out eating her months ago and she’s a big girl for her age!
Holly says
When my 17 year old turned 12 and went through a big growth spurt he ate 4 sandwiches for lunch every day for over a year. Every day! He shot up and was so skinny he needed all the calories he could get, so I had him drink Ovaltine with his breakfast, made baked potatoes for a snack, added pasta and beans as much as I could, and he still would eat four ham and cheese or peanut butter sandwiches every day.
I have a 19 and a 13 yr old girl that both eat a lot, and a 17, 12, and 10 yr old boy. The girls eat just as much as the boys!
Catie says
What a cutie!
Lana says
Ah! Just like our grandson-we get chubby cuddles from him! Funny thing is though-when our girls got to be teenagers they could always out eat the boys! The boys didn’t slow down any, the girls just started EATING everything in sight. They are all very skinny so I guess they can do it! I was amazed at how much food we went through when all 5 were home and the grocery budget does have to be increased about every year.
Kelly says
I have 2 boys, 4 and 16 months and they EAT LIKE CRAZY!! I buy yogurt 4 – 6 packs at a time because they both eat 1 -2 cups before bed! I go through 3-4 bananas every morning and they both LOVE meat!! I could make a dozen meatballs between the 2 of them and they will disappear. I cannot even imagine when they are teenagers!
Llama Momma says
I have three boys and I can only say….YUP!!
I used to make a batch of pancakes on Saturday, we’d eat them for breakfast and freeze the rest for breakfasts during the week.
Now, if I want leftovers to freeze, I have to make a TRIPLE batch. 🙂
Jamie says
@Llama Momma, I have three boys (6, 4, and 2) and I have to make a quadruple batch and usually only have a couple of pancakes left over at that!
Beverly says
oh he is just precious..loving that pizza, my son is 21 and still eats pizza at least 3 times a wk..lol can’t wait for my 5 month old to try it..she watches us eat everything with great curiousity..
Lana says
@Beverly, When my 30 year old was in college he would call up Papa John’s to order and they recognized his voice! He never even had to tell them what he wanted-they knew!
Beverly says
@Lana, that is so funny! i used to call dominoes on the way home from work so i could pick up pizza and they always knew also..
Sarah M. says
I hear you!! My little guy just turned 1 and he constantly seems hungry. Just this morning he had 5 (3-4″) pancakes, half a banana and a handful of cheerios and his milk to drink. He eats about as much for lunch too!! Although he has kind of slowed down by dinner. At first I was worried he was eating too much, but now I know boys just eat a ton!!!
Becky says
Ditto! 3 boys, one teen, another almost teen, and the last with a hefty appetite. Our biggest expense (not counting regular bills) is groceries. We can live off of $200 for the year for clothes (thrift store baby!) but our grocery bill had been $500+ before coupons. Now it varies between $100-200 monthly. Way to go coupon bloggers!!!!

Boys do eat a LOT! I just had my 3rd and my 4 and 6 yr old eat adult size portions at dinner. Then turn around and ask for something to eat as they are hungry!
Lisa says
We have 2 girls (13,1) and four boys (8,6,4,3) and there definitely is a difference in the way they eat. My boys already eat more than my oldest daughter at meals plus I give them 2 snacks a day. Love that picture, that little guy is so cute!

Oh yes…I completely understand. We certainly go through a LOT of groceries at our house!!

I hear you! My little son is almost 2 and can eat 3 bowls of cereal in one sitting! Last time I took him to the doc he was in the 24th percentile for weight and they asked me if he was eating enough from all 4 food groups. If they only knew! His favorites are rice, corn and pizza!

My 13 yo boy eats 6 fried- chicken legs in a sitting, along with black-eyed peas and rice, and macaroni and cheese. He stays skinny, too!!!My husband insists on meat at every meal…you can imagine what our grocery bill looks like!My 17 yo girl likes her meat, too. The 15 yo girl and I leave it! He also eats 3 eggs, 2 slices of toast, an orange and a container of yougurt for breakfast, and still is complaining by 9 am that he’s ready for lunch….He wears a size 12 shoe and is 5’10, and wears his daddy’s clothes!

I have two little girls one who is 3 1/2 who hardly eats, and the other one is 16 months and eats all the time. She is still little though is only weighs 20lbs. She loves pizza too, and has been eating since she was 10 months. Her favorite part is the crust.

He’s found the good stuff! We love pizza! Our oldest is almost 13 and he eats and eats. He’s still as skinny as a rail. We’re trying to bulk him up…we’re afraid he’ll blow away in the wind! ; )

Crystal, we have a 22 mo old wonderful little boy. My husband and I both agreed we have to be debt free before he hits puberty or we will be eaten literally out of house and home. He eats a ton now, and my husband is 6’3 and I am the shortest of my entire family, so we know he is going to be a big guy.

LOL When I first read your post title I thought maybe you had another one on the way! 🙂 We’ve got four–two boys, two girls–and our youngest girl (4.5yo) can give them all a run for the money in the eating department!

LOL! My 2 boys have been the same way. It’s amazing how much food we go through as a family of 5. I never thought that little kids (my kids are 5, 4, and 20 mos) ate this much! I’m a little scared to think of how it’s going to be when they are teenagers!

I know exactly what you are talking about! I have 3 boys 6,6, and 4. Our 4 year old ate an entire 1/4 lb. hamburger (no bun) before he was 1. He now eats more than my husband and I and is skinny as a rail! He burns it off the minute he eats it- wish I could do that! Boys are constantly hungry. It drives me insane! 🙂 I do have a book on reserve at the library called “Mad Hungry: The feeding of men and boys” or something similar. Looking forward to reading that and hopefully getting some new ideas to keep these guys full!

We have 4 boys and a girl and the youngest boy is 10 months old like Silas. You may just be surprised how his appetites change with time. The boys that have been the best eaters as babies have gotten very picky and hard to feed later and my oldest son, now 9, who was a very picky eater until he was about 5, is all set to eat us out of house and home now!
By the way, your children are very adorable. I always enjoy it when you post pictures of them.

Crystal – I totally know what you mean!!! My daughter is similar in age to your youngest daughter (Mine is 28 months old) and she is tall (37 inches tall at her last well child exam!!!) and solid (Weighs a respectable 38 lbs!) but she’s not fat. She is average. SHe’s at the top of the growth chart because well….not many 2 year olds are her size.
My son just turned 1 last week. He weighs almost 28 lbs and is probably around 30-32 inches tall!!
He eats from sun up to sundown too – he is a BIG EATER!

This is one of those times I can say jokingly I told you so! Boys do eat lots more then girls.Thankfully you are good with money and seem to feed your family well so if you do raise your food allowance in the near future you will do good.

I have an eight year old boy that makes me a bit concerned with what my grocery bill will be like in a few years ;). He’s totally middle of the road in terms of height and weight, but sometimes eats like there is not tomorrow.

Our son, Evan(who weighed 10 lb. 10 oz at birth and is now 15) eats more than any other person in our family. His first word was eat! We were on vacation when he was a baby and we were having pizza also~we still laugh when we remember he was sitting on my lap and reached over to grab at a piece of pizza!
Yeah~that grocery budget goes up as they get older, let me tell ya!

I feel for you!! I have 3 boys and one girl. My daughter is 11. My boys are 8,5 and 10 months.
My 8 year old eats more than my husband, three helpings at dinner and hungry before bed!! He is skinny as a beanpole, but active!! The 10 month old loves to eat too. All of the boys have dairy allergies, so they don’t eat any dairy, but the 8 year old and baby are also off wheat and soy, which makes cooking a challenge.
It is funny cause the 10 month old still wakes up to nurse several times a night most nights and hubby thinks there is something wrong. He fails to remember how our other boys were similar!
It has definitely impacted our food budget. We just got our 1/2 cow last week and we have been basically out of beef for a couple of months waiting for our cow to be ready. We bought extra meat from our farmer and the processor in the fall to get us through till our cow was ready. Next year we might have to get a whole cow. We already ordered more chickens, so we will see.

I had my 2 girls first, too…and they were both dainty little eaters. My son, Ben is 20 months and he has been able to eat pizza by the slice since he was about 10 months old. He now eats at least 2 pieces! He is solid as a rock. My just-turned-4-year-old little girl is 29 lbs…Ben is already 27 lbs! I sure do love my little hunky guy, too:)

My 6 month old is already on that track to eating us out of house and home. He gets big bottles, and still wants snacks in between. 🙂

I feel your pain! My son is nearly 16, tall, thin, and eats like a horse. With a growing teen and a husband, I’m rethinking whether my food budget amount is practical as well. Good luck!
Natasha says
Oh, I hear ya! We have 2 girls and 1 boy who are very similar in age to your three and I’m also amazed at how much more my son seems to eat than the girls. I can’t even imagine what our grocery bill will look like even 5 years from now! Ha!

I love the way he is studying that piece of pizza!!!

This is so funny because my 16 month old LOVES pizza too, he can’t get enough either! Sadly we have to give it to him with no sauce (well, not tomato). The acidity tears him up! His favorite is when I sneak spinach under the cheese!
