Mother’s Day isn’t always flowers and chocolate and handmade cards. For many women, it’s a hard reminder of something that isn’t, something that once was, or something that might never be.
Maybe you’ve lost a child.
Maybe you’re estranged from your mom.
Maybe your child has a life-threatening disease.
Maybe you’ve lost your mother.
Maybe you’re single and longing for marriage and motherhood.
Maybe that adoption you thought was going to go through didn’t.
Maybe you never really had a mother figure in your life.
Maybe you’re desperately longing for a child and struggling with infertility.
Maybe you are estranged from your grown child.
There are many, many reasons why today might be painful for you. I don’t know your exact circumstances or the burdens you are carrying today. But if Mother’s Day is hard for you, I want you to know this: You are not alone.
I can’t be there physically to hug you and pray with you like I wish I could, but I want you to know that I care about you and others in this community here do, too.
And I would be honored to pray for you — especially this Mother’s Day weekend. If you are struggling and would like extra prayer and encouragement, would you leave a comment on this post or send me a direct message?
You are loved. You are not alone. You are not forgotten.
I recorded a special Mother’s Day episode of my podcast a few weeks back with Katie Faris, the author of the book God Is Still Good: Gospel Hope and Comfort for the Unexpected Sorrows of Motherhood.
Katie has walked through really devastating times as a mom: miscarriage and three of her children being diagnosed with a genetic condition that has caused many difficult health struggles and will impact her kids for the rest of their lives.
In this episode, she shares more of her story and how she has clung to God and relied upon Him during the hard and dark seasons. I appreciated her honesty and vulnerability, but also her empathy and compassion. If you’re walking through a really difficult season related to motherhood or if Mother’s Day is really hard for you, I think this episode will encourage your heart.

Crystal, thank you so much for this post! Thank you, too for wanting to pray for me! I lost both of my children in the last year and the firsts are excruciating for me, too. Especially my Birthday and Mother’s Day—in the same week. Too hard sometimes!
I am a Christ-follower, and study the Bible a LOT …but there are times even that doesn’t help!

I was completely forgotton….again…on Mother’s day. I have 4 children, all full blown adults now, and have never had a mother’s day. Painful. I was a good mom!
Crystal Paine says
Have you communicated to them how much it would mean for you to hear from them on Mother’s Day? It’s possible that they don’t know and would love to honor you if they knew specific ways that would bless you. I’m sure you were a wonderful mom and I’m sure they love you deeply. I just stopped and prayed for you.

I’d greatly appreciate prayer. We’ve struggled with fertility & have lost 4 babies, with no medical answers on why (except our first loss). Because our first loss (baby boy at 20 weeks gestation) happened the day before Mother’s Day 7 years ago, Mother’s Day has always been *incredibly* difficult.

Crystal, I would appreciate a prayer today. My youngest son died in October and this year of firsts has been so very hard. I’m so very thankful he trusted in Jesus and I’ll see him again. Also, I ask for prayer for his 3 young children and wife. Thank you!

Hi Crystal, just wondering if you might have a little time to say a prayer for my 16 year old daughter. She’s having a medical issue (anemia), and has a second infusion tomorrow, after having a bad allergic reaction the first time. Thank you very much.

Thank you for reminding us. Mother’s Day was very hard for me for many years. Infertility made it so painful. My son was born to my great joy, but I still don’t celebrate Mother’s Day. Love and hugs to all women!
