I’m so thankful to be well-stocked up fruit again — at least for a few days. My children have been eating through fruit at a crazy rate here recently, but I’m not going to do anything to discourage it since I’m thrilled that they are asking to have fruit for snack.
Now if we could just get them to start asking for zucchini and spinach for snack, I’d really feel like a good mom. But I don’t think that’s going to be happening anytime soon! 🙂
I don’t know if this is true for all Walmart stores, but I encountered the same surly attitude as some of the other commenters when I first began price matching. The cashier actually raised his voice to me and berated me for “messing up” his productivity rating. Apparently, at our Walmart and perhaps others, cashiers are evaluated based on how quickly they move their line/# of items.
I’ve since become more savvy and separate my cart into store circulars so I can unload quickly and keep same store specials together. I then show the cashier the ad, the expiration date, and the price per item…it moves pretty quickly after that. Oh, and since Walmart honors ads from as far as 35 miles away (as the crow flies), I’ve also asked stores in neighboring cities to add me to their customer list. Every week I get circulars in the mail from stores known for their low/discount prices but are too far away to be economical for me to hit.
When price matching produce does it have to be from same growers?
I feel the same way about having veggies for a snack. It’s not happenin’ though. Great deals at wally world! I just bought grapes there for $.99 a lb. It’s usually the best deal I can find!
I have had good results PMing at Walmart until this week. They matched prices for dozen eggs @ $.99 from Walgreens and the $.99/lb on strawberries from Aldi’s. I had a dozen nectarines and was going to price match them at the Aldi’s price of $.25 each. The cashier said that they can’t PM when it’s priced at a different rate – per item vs. per pound.
She weighed 4 of the nectarines and it would have been $3ish. She called her CSM over and had the “policy” repeated to me.
I thanked her and said I understood what she was telling me, that the policy had never been published or explained before and that I had no intention of spending triple on Walmart fruit because they have changed their policy without notice. She was understanding, saying she wouldn’t pay it either – at the same time, she was eyeing the strawberries I had scored for 2/3 off their price.
Live and learn. It seems that Wal-mart is adjusting this price matching policy as they go.
You know, I’m often surprised by what my children might eat for a snack. You might try a few raw veggies with some sort of dip. My kids will often eat raw carrots, celery, and green peppers especially if I offer a dip of some sort. I recently discovered that my 16mo DS, who does not like many veggies, will eat most any veggie as long as it’s covered in hummus. Maybe keep experimenting with veggies and dips until you find the right combination.
I always pricematch at Walmart, been doing it for a long time… never have a problem if I have the ad with me. And sometimes WM has better produce, and sometimes Aldi does….depends on the day…
I just bought 2 peaches for $2.50 a pound from Shoppers! My 10 month old is eating purely finger foods now so we buy alot more fruit & veg, I have been getting swindled!
I am assuming you guys price match with Walmart because they have better quality fruits/veg? I have never price matched.
Today when I tried to have our Walmart (Chattanooga, Brainerd Road) price match the Aldi’s fruit prices they refused. After speaking with the Assistant Manager on duty the issue seems to be that each store can decide if they will match Aldi’s prices on fresh fruit or not. As he put it “it is a gray area”. At least he was cordial. He offered to let me buy the fruit I had picked out for Aldi’s price but I had already been through the line and did not want to wait in a big line again. I’m confused as to why there would not be a corporate policy in place to deal with the situation. When I asked about this he replied with the “gray area” comment. Any suggestions?
One way to get kids to eat more veggies is to have them with a “dip” of salad dressing. Raw broccoli and cauliflower is really popular, but you can also sneak in the zucchini, yellow squash, and carrots too (even bell peppers etc.).
I haven’t price matched at Walmart yet, but I wanted to comment on the employees. I’ve found them to be less nice at Publix & Walmart since they instituted the new coupon policy (not just the cashiers). Although the last time at Walmart, I did not bring any coupons with me, but there were the “sample people” there and the lady with the veggies encouraged me to take several coupons. I know the new policy is to use only one and the cash register picked up that I had two of the same coupons, but the cashier knew I bought two different veggies and forced it through. She was one of the ones who had been there forever. She did not make me feel bad at all about “violating” their new coupon policy. Not like the problem I had “before” they instituted it. I bought two packs of trash bags, one for me and one for my FIL who I take care of. There were stick-on coupons on both, so I bought the name brand instead of the store brand. When I checked out, the cashier had a guy on the other side of her register and she was talking to him the whole time about each other’s families (and these were not teens – the lady was probably older than me). Needless to say, I was flustered about the lack of attention towards me, she didn’t take off my $2, and when I got down the road I realized she did not deduct my coupons (any of the Walmarts near me are 8 miles away so I’m not running back for $2). I called back to complain and asked for the manager and he was more concerned that I was only supposed to use one coupon. This was about two months before they announced the policy! So it was not even known at the time. I started to get angry and told him that he was more concerned about me using a coupon rather than the fact that I was ignored by a cashier who was talking to someone on the other side of her register the whole time? So then he asked her name, which I remembered. I’m appalled at how some employees act at work nowadays. They had different standards when I worked at a grocery store and fast food restaurant 25 to 30 years ago. We weren’t even allowed to wear earrings or nail polish at the fast food place (now the kids look like they rolled out of bed sometimes).
Your store only accepts one like coupon? Walmart’s policy states “one coupon per item” as in you buy one box of trash bags, you only use one coupon, you buy two boxes you can only use two, etc. Sounds like your store has multiple issues with customer service. I would email corporate about your whole experience (including that follow up phone call) AND about their one coupon limit. Yes the manager has the right to limit but ONE?? Anyway, their system is kind of automated so it will probably pick up a few key words and send you a generic email. But it will say that if you have any further questions reply back to that email. This is when I put “my email was clearly not read by a real person so here it is again: ____” and copy/paste my original email. It doesn’t take very long and I have found that I end up having much less problems in the future after contacting corporate. Good luck 🙂
You comment about kids asking for zucchini as a snack reminded me of a cute story about my neighbor’s 5-year-old son:
She (the mom) was baking cookies, and her son was sitting on a stool near the counter watching. As she was taking them off the tray to cool, he started hinting, “I’m kind of hungry,” and “I wish I could have a snack.” His mom, amused that he had waited so long, asked “Would you like a cookie?” to which the boy said, “Well, I was really hoping for some fresh zucchini sticks….”
This happened when I was 12 or 13 and was helping his mom out in the kitchen, but I remember it so clearly. He was completely serious, too. Still makes me laugh 🙂
We have an Aldi’s their produce is hit or miss. Walmart is not far but it is not the closest. I don’t shop at Walmart. I just don’t believe in them. I think they have bad practices that are not beneficial to the country. I get it, it is cheap but I just feel that I do not want to support them. Just a personal opinion, though that seems to be the norm where I live.
I just did a pretty large batch of price matching myself, and it seems everytime i’ve done it the cashiers want to see the ads. i even offered to hand her a list that i’d written out with the price matches but nooooo. maybe next time i’ll hand them a copy of the price match policy and my list. flipping back and forth through all those ads is a hassle at the checkout and i don’t want to infuriate the customers that happen to file in behind me. check out my blog for my latest price match adventure in the Dallas area!
I love the picture! Call me crazy, but so many sites are for coupons/finds for all the pre-packaged food and processed foods. I love PMing at WM now, the cashiers are really friendly about it. I don’t have to have the ad with me, but it’s helpful to have the ad in case I forget what the prices are (and I also write down the price next to the item I’m wanting to PM). The quality of produce at our WM isn’t great, Winn Dixie is MUCH better quality for produce, but the price difference helps make up for it. Plus, since my husband’s coworker started selling his home-grown blueberries at work for $2 for one of the big quart zip lock bags, we’re overflowing with fresh, delicious blueberries for much cheaper than any store 😉
oooh lucky! I don’t know anybody who has extra fruit 🙁 When my parents get a gallon sized bag of mini plums from a neighbor (that I don’t know) I give them a puppy dog look and they share with me but that’s the closest I get 😛

Yes the produce is in our ad. For instance on the front page of this weeks ad (they have current and following week’s weekly ads and 2 different sets of “special offers” ads at a time) they have (TX area): $.79 cantaloupes, $.99 strawberries, $.29 peaches and nectarines, and $.25 plums
I often joke about how I can’t afford my 2 year old son’s fruit habit – but like you, I’m not going to discourage it!
I price matched at my Walmart last week & the cashier was very friendly, but in her effort to price match, she charged me the WM price, plus the price I matched it to. I’m not a math expert, so I had to go back to customer service. 🙁 Sort of frustrating, but I still think it was successful for my first run.
Here’s my question…I normally get my produce from Aldi. I may not be remembering correctly, but I don’t think my Aldi puts their produce prices in their fliers. I’m just wondering how you guys know the price for produce without actually going into the store?

Have you made a mock apple pie substituting the zucchini for apples? The bland zucchini takes on the flavor of the cinnamon and sweetener (sugar or whatever type you choose.)

I know what you mean about kids eating so much fruit! My two little boys will go through an entire 1lb package of strawberries every day if I let them. I hate to discourage fruit eating, but at $1.75 a carton that makes for a pretty expensive daily snack. Unfortunately, that is the sale price in my neck of the woods.
I price match Meijer items @ Walmart. The cashiers get all mixed up and confused. I brought in my ad and got 8 avocados for 5 dollars. This saves me from going all the way to Meijer.
While I love to shop at Target, my store’s deals are consistently gone and the customet service is poor. Bought some dishes at full price that were reduced just a couple days later but Target wouldn’t refund the difference becaise they were “clearanced” -frustrating.
The majority of the fruit at my Aldi is either pre-packaged or per item, not per lb. This doesn’t create any issues when price matching?

I wish I could say that it wasn’t a problem for me yesterday! I tried to match Aldi’s price of .25 each for nectarines, and the cashier wouldn’t let me do it, saying that it’s priced per lb. at Wal-Mart. I don’t know why she couldn’t just ring them up at .25 each without weighing them. Simple! But we did have a lot of comp ads and she was getting tired of doing it. Boneless, skinless chicken breast for $1.47/lb. !!!! We bought so many packages that we were told there’s a limit of 6, even if the comp ad doesn’t have a limit printed.
I have a friend that thinly slices and then dehydrates her zucchinis. They are like potato chips, and she serves them with dip and her kids LOVE them!! They would not eat zucchini before she tried this.
Have you tried to make a Cantaloupe smoothie? Cantaloupe was $1.19 at my aldi store this week. I’m on a smoothie kick, so I just went with it. I would recommend a little bit of vanilla flavoring to be added. I always use my own homemade (unflavored) yogurt, so a little vanilla helps. Also, you can freeze the cantaloupe! Makes for a great smoothie 🙂
Price matching fruit is an AWESOME idea!!!! Why didn’t I think of that? LOL! Our Aldi doesn’t have great produce section so that advice is super! I always look at your groceries and think, “Wow, that’s a lot of food!” I forget you have 3 growing kids! (they are beautiful by the way). I love your blog and have learned so much. Woo I’ve never seen bananas for 18 cents/lb around here ever! Our Aldi has terrible produce it’s always moldy- Walmart is not much better- we don’t have a super Walmart though.
I have a question for you all who price match at Target. Has anyone had success with this, particularly with regard to groceries? I went last week to match a Kroger ad, and the cust service gals told me that they don’t match stores which require a loyalty card. OK, well that eliminates Kroger, Food Lion, Martin’s, CVS, and Rite Aid. The only stores left would be Walmart and Kmart, so what is the point? Is this correct? I e-mailed corporate, but just got a canned response that didn’t answer my question. I called cust service and got India, so I didn’t think that would be much help either.
I also called the corporate office with a complaint about price matching and tried explaining what price matching was. After twenty minutes, he hung up on me. It was such a complicated process to price match at Target—I find it easier to just go to the multiple stores. Wal-mart seems much easier.
Unfortunately yes it is correct. They have recently added a TON of new exclusions. I don’t bother to price match at Target. They have WAY too many exclusions. You can’t do nonbranded produce there either so it has to say “Dole pineapple” or “Driscolls strawberries”, etc now. :/

Not according to their policy :/ Now of course some stores are more lenient than others sometimes so you may be able to but if they told you no, pulling out the policy wouldn’t help you
I price-match store brand items at Walmart (with Walmart store brand like Great Value) all the time. So the L’oven brand would surely work too. Name brands must be identical though to price- match.

Wow I’m impressed!! I keep thinking some week I will try price matching at my Walmart. I have a question this week in the Aldi flier they have the L’oven hamburger rolls for 79¢ can I go to Walmart and buy the brand walmart sells and then price match to 79¢?? Can brands be different for things like ketchep, bbq sauce and that type of thing??
No they have to be the same brand if a brand is listed. You *might* have a store that will let you do store brand to store brand but according to their policy, they do not have to so you will probably be wasting your time trying.
The Vitamix has my kiddos asking for green smoothies. They’re great eaters anyway, but it does tickle me to hear them ask for spinach or kale in their smoothies. 🙂

Most items are brand to brand. My store will match Great Value to Best Choice or Kroger brand, etc. For produce though, it’s item to item. If a cashier tells you that you can’t match something, don’t be afraid to kindly ask him or her to check with a manager. The managers almost always say yes.

just wanna pass on an idea of how to use up sometimes-overabundant zucchini and yellow squash. Peel them, cut in chunks, and put into SMOOTHIES! Even my husband didn’t notice!

I always have my ads with me, and do my matching before or after regular items, it seems to go faster that way. Some cashier want to see them while others don’t care. Often some want to be picky because its not the picture shown even thought it says assorted, its the same brand and size. I just say this item is on sale at____ for___. And some cashiers will give you a better price! But make sure you know walmarts price because I believe they charge you the higher price, if ad matching because sometimes its cheaper esp. The 2 for $5 deal!
Hi Crystal! I’m sure this varies by region, but do you find that the quality of the produce that you get from Walmart is better than Aldi’s? Also, do your price adventures @Walmart continue to go smoothly? Since ad prices of fruit never seem to include product distributor names {Driscoll, etc.}, is Walmart cool with just matching a product weight? Thanks for your help!
Right now, the quality of fruit at Walmart is higher than Aldi in our area. Since Walmart has their guaranteed price-matching policy, they’ve been great about price-matching!
It does vary by region. In our area, Aldi’s produce is better than Wal-Marts.

hmm never thought about that before. My son thinks everything is better frozen even if it is something he likes anyway (grapes, cups of yogurt, etc) so maybe this would work for veggies. Thanks for the idea I think I am going to have to try it 🙂

We did this same thing today at our Walmart without the ad. It was no problem. The worker said they actually have all the main line ads in their break room so the workers are pretty familiar with them already. No ad= No problem. It was the first time we tried it without the ad. Very nice!!
I “cut” all fruit with bananas to try and reduce the cost. Whatever we are having, I cube or slice into a big bowl then add a sliced banana or two. I just tell them it’s “fruit salad, yummy yummy” and they never seem to mind! Otherwise I would be buying fruit every day! They like veggies too, but it is more selective.
Im new to price matching at walmart as well and LOVE it…I like being able to get all my items at one store and get a good deal.
I sure wish we had a Aldi around my area. They seem to have some really awesome deals.
Wow! I second that. I was also out of fruit and I had to stop by Albertson’s to stock up. I thought their prices were okay, but this is great!
We have an Aldi right across the street, but they don’t put out an ad.
Most Aldi’s have a flyer for next week at their exits. Sometimes those flyers dont have produce in them. But this week those flyers had other name brand items that you could price match and use coupons on at walmart and get a good deal. My Aldi flyer comes in the wednesday paper.
I don’t get the paper, so I checked their website and if you click on the weekly ad you they have a print page option that printed very well for me. I’ve found (and heard) that you’ll have a much better time at checkout if you have the ad. Plus I don’t trust myself to remember all the prices! A lot of the cashiers don’t even know how to price match correctly, let alone know the Walmart policy!

aldi prices vary by region.
A while back my Walmart didn’t accept Aldi’s prices for price matching. I hope it has changed after their “match it!” campaign. I can’t be certain unless I try, though.
Perhaps you can contact corporate headquarters to find out which stores they will not and will price match through their website (Walmart.com). If they reply by email, you can print that and carry it with you the next time you shop and want to use the Aldi’s ad to price match. I only wish we had an Aldi’s here in NW Washington.

I am a little confused about price matching with Walmart. Unfortunately, I cannot find grocery stores that have decent deals, such as Aldi, in my area (SW Florida) .. Any advice? Also, what specifically do you do when you “price match”.. Do you bring an Aldi Advertisement in with you and show the cashier? I feel as if Walmart’s prices might be the best, other than the local Farmer’s Market.

You don’t need to bring the ad (per Walmart’s policy) but it helps the cashier feel easier if you do a lot of times especially if it’s for a specialty store and not one of the big grocery stores that they already have the ads for. But you separate those items on the belt so that you can do them first (or last) and say “I’d like the price match ____ to _____’s price of ____” for each item and they’ll do a price override.
I would love to be able to buy fruit that cheap here.
It seems like those prices for fruit are about double what I pay on sale, too!
I was just thinking the same thing. My kids eat tons of fruit. If I saw cantaloupes for 99 cents I would think I’d died and gone to heaven. I bought one at 2.99 yesterday and thought the price was fair. Bananas are .69 (unless they are brown, then I can get them for .39). The cheapest strawberries I’ve seen are $1.77 for 1lb (including PYO). I’ve been spending almost $40/wk on just fruits and veggies and that’s with sticking to the sales and shopping multiple stores/markets. But that’s New England.. .you would think there was a giant ocean and a mountain range that donkeys had to carry things over between here and the midwest.
We eat bananas like crazy here (my husband and daughter love them, and they’re the cheapest per-pound fruit). When I see brown “banana bread” bananas, I pick up a few. As soon as I get home, I peel and freeze them. Perfect for smoothies, or stick a fork in them and eat like a popsicle!
(I live in New England, too. Passed up cantaloupe for $2 the other day. What was I thinking?)
That is one thing about living in the Midwest that I LOVE! Good prices on fruits and veggies! I once went to a farmers market in California and they wanted $2.00 for an ear of corn! LOL! I would say though that those fruit prices are mostly loss leader prices and not the general norm. But still, we do have good prices over all!

When I price matched at Walmart Yesterday she actually took aldi’s price as a per pound price so peaches were .25/lb! I didn’t notice til we got home. I even told her at the register it’s per item.
I’ve been price matching Aldi produce at Walmart the last couple of weeks and I LOVE IT!! Its so easy to do and we have lots of yummy fruit for snacks its wonderful! 🙂 Aldi also has some name brand products in our ad this week and your can price match then use coupons! 🙂
When I look at Aldis ad this week it just has the price of their fruit and no brand name. Does that mean that WalMart will price match any brand of fruit they carry? I am just curious how it works with the brand names.

WalMarts coupon policy says you don’t have to have the ad with you. I’m confused on how that would work?! Has any one went to walmart with out the other stores ad and successfully price matched?
I don’t do it on purpose (I find it helpful for both myself and the cashier to be confident) but yes I have occasionally done an unexpected stop into Walmart and pricematched. I went in and got my corn on the cob (or whatever the item) and said “I’d like to price match Sprout’s price of 4/$1 and I have 8 ears so they should be $2”. No problem 🙂
I am assuming the employees at your wal-mart location must be more “friendly” than in my area. I tried a local wal-mart last Friday, and it was the most horrble shopping experience ever!! First she told me I needed the flier, and then told me they didnt match store “card” prices! thank goodness I had the policy with me. And even after showing her the policy, she still made me show her all the fliers!! I brought them just in case, and had no problems showing her, but she was literally slamming my items down after scanning them!! needless to say, I sent a letter to corporate and hopefully they see why so many people have stopped shopping there.
I don’t understand when the cashiers have bad attitudes about coupons/price matching. They arent loosing money, it may take longer to check us out, but they are paid by the hour not by how many people they move through their line 🙂 I’ve found greeitng them with a smile and keep a positive attituede myself will sometimes rub off on them 😉
I was actually in a Walmart on Tuesday & the cashier offered to price match my milk for me. I hadn’t been home yet so I didn’t even know it was on sale somewhere. I think I will try to use that cashier from now on!
I am that way too, I find my favorite cashiers, and usually stick with them, generally they are young males lol they tend to not be so coupon police like 🙂
Ha ha! I always used too go to young males too because of this. I ran into one the other day that was worse then any cashier I have ever seen. I think he thought he owned the company! 😉
I did price match at my local WalMart without the ad, and a CSM had to explain to the cashier and clarify for me how that actually works. Here is what I was told… You can price match in your “local area” WITHOUT the ad (each WalMart has a certain vicinity in which they consider “local”), but if its outside of that “local” area that you should bring the ad with you so that they can see that it is in fact the price that you are quoting. I would bring in ads regardless just to be on the safe side, so that if questions arise you can show them the item. However, I was told that the cashiers should not give you a problem if its a local store. Just ask a CSM next time you’re in WalMart what they consider to be their “local area” for price matching…that would be better than chancing it at the register… 😉
For Walmart you are not required to (you just tell them which store you are price matching and how much it is) but I find it is helpful for me to make sure I am getting the exact right thing and don’t forget anything and helpful for them so that they don’t feel like they might get in trouble. A lot of Walmarts have some ads at the front or at the checkout lanes but they will not have all of the ads (like Aldis, Mexican supermarkets, etc) so I always bring mine
Walmart recently started a new policy that you are not required to have the competiter’s printed ad with you in order to price match, but you could run into certain cashiers who decide that they have their own “policy”, lol. My local Walmart considers any stores within a 50 mile radius to be competiters, so I save a lot of money by price matching. If you want the best luck with price matching, look for a younger cashier, or a male- they are usually the most laid back about price matching.
My Walmart won’t match Aldi’s unless the price is in their flyer.
I have been wondering about Aldi’s prices of “per item” fruit. Did you happen to weigh each of your produce bags to see how much they weighed? I haven’t been able to decide if Aldi’s “per item” price on fruit is a good deal or not, as I usually aim to just stay under $.99 a pound. Any thoughts?
When I price matched at Walmart Yesterday she actually took aldi’s price as a per pound price so peaches were .25/lb! I didn’t notice til we got home. I even told her at the register it’s per item.

I’m thinking that the sugar, butter, etc would kind of defeat the purpose of giving them the veggies 😛 Though as a replacement for another dessert, it would work 🙂
You can actually make zucchini bread that is really healthy!
I make it using whole wheat flour and flax, splenda instead of sugar (it does work!) and applesauce instead of butter. I’ve found that if you put applesauce in any baking recipe that calls for butter or oil, you get the exact same results, less than half the number of calories, no where near as much fat, and if you use cinnamon applesauce you can get a great cinnamon taste as well.
My family absolutely loved the zucchini bread I made with those changes. I had planned on making a loaf of it and two muffin pans to freeze. They ate one of the muffin pans that day (!), the loaf for breakfast the next day and then ate on the rest of the muffins for snacks all week long instead of cookies! And when they were gone, they looked at me sadly and asked for more lol

Zucchini Bread Recipe
Ingredients
2 eggs, beaten
1 1/3 cup sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
3 cups grated fresh zucchini
2/3 cup melted unsalted butter
2 teaspoons baking soda
Pinch salt
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
1 cup dried cranberries or raisins (optional)
Method
1 Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large bowl, mix together the sugar, eggs, and vanilla. Mix in the grated zucchini and then the melted butter. Sprinkle baking soda and salt over the mixture and mix in. Add the flour, a third at a time. Sprinkle in the cinnamon and nutmeg and mix. Fold in the nuts and dried cranberries or raisins if using.
2 Divide the batter equally between 2 buttered 5 by 9 inch loaf pans. Bake for 1 hour (check for doneness at 50 minutes) or until a wooden pick inserted in to the center comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes. Turn out onto wire racks to cool thoroughly.
Makes 2 loaves.
I used applesauce instead of butter and splenda instead of the sugar. I also used pecans instead of walnuts because that’s all I had. I used whole wheat flour instead of the all purpose flour, and I added in half a cup of flax (it turned out a little dryer than I wanted so I just added in a bit of water until it got easier to mix up). All substitutions were 1 for 1 (2/3 cup applesauce for 2/3 cup butter type of thing). I hope it turns out well for you!
