My husband and I are both training for a 5K right now so we’ve been eating like horses. (It’s a good thing we’re not training for a marathon because I can’t even imagine how much food you have to consume for that sort of training schedule! I am considering going for a half marathon, but I kinda have to make it through a 5K first, ya know? :))
Anyway, Jesse asked the other day if I could start buying more cereal since that’s a nice snack for him when he’s hungry in the evenings. Well, I have to tell you that my stomach did a little flip because I knew that cereal deals have been scarce in these parts for the last number of weeks and the thought of paying full price for a box of cereal was quite disturbing to me.
I know, I know, what is wrong with me? I’ve gotten spoiled by coupons and good deals, that’s what it is!
Gratefully, I only ended up paying $2.19 for some organic Cascadian Farms cereal on sale and $1.50 a box for the Kellogg’s Crunchy Nut cereal. And now I’m going to be on a hunt for cereal deals in our area since I really try never to pay more than $1 per box! Holler if you’re local and find something good or shoot me an email if you find something online. My husband will be extremely grateful. 🙂
Here’s our shopping trip price breakdown:
Orange Juice — marked down to $2.29
2 Kroger cottage cheese — marked down to $0.59 (perfect for the lasagna casserole I was planning to make this week!)
Blue Diamond Almond Breeze milk — $1.67, used $0.55/1 coupon (doubled), $0.67 after coupon
Sour cream — marked down to $0.49
Odwalla bar — $1, used $0.50/1 coupon (doubled), free after coupon
3 Starkist tuna pouches — $1 each, used 3 $0.50/1 coupons (doubled — link no longer available), free after coupons
2 boxes of Kellogg’s Crunchy Nut cereal — $2.50 each, used 2 $1/1 coupons, $1.50 each
Cascadian Farms cereal — $2.19
Turkey — marked down to $1.79
Coffee-mate — used free coupon
My total after coupons was $13.98.
Sarah says
At least you picked up a box with a rebate for the Kelloggs cereal-making it free! It’s 1 per household, but it helps when you know you’re paying more for cereal than you normally do.
Elisa says
Do you have a Super KMart in your area? I got a bunch of free Kellogg’s cereal there. It’s super doubles this week and they have a ton of different Kellogg’s cereals on sale 10 for $10. There is a $1/2 any Kellogg’s cereal in this Sunday’s Red Plum, so free cereal for us! Most of it is the sugary stuff, but there were Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies and Raisin Bran (a bit healthier . . .). There is also a $1/3 coupon out there which makes them only $0.33 each. Might be worth looking into 🙂
Stacy says
I have been reading your blog for sometime now. I notice you buy several marked down or quick sale items. Can you share a little more about this. I waste so much food because of dates on food. When is it ok to buy quick sale ie: meats, dairy etc. Thanks so much for any information you can share.

Good luck on your 5k! I ran 3 last year (I’m in my 2nd year of running). I plan to do a 10k, & train for a half marathon. Marathon is a goal before I am 36, 3 years away! 🙂
Tiffany says
I was just at Safeway. I got 4 boxes of cereal for .17 per box. 3 boxes of Cinnamon Burst Cheerios and 1 box of Oatmeal Squares. They are buy 4 @ $1.49 apiece. I used 3 – .75 coupons for the Cheerios (2 printed online and 1 from an insert) and 1 – $1 coupon for the Oatmeal Squares from an insert. Add doublers and it was only .17 per box!
Laura Miller says
I am not local to you but I have been getting good deals on cereal lately. I haven’t paid more then $1 a box of natural/organic brands. I have gotten Barbara’s Bakery several times at Whole Foods with manufacture and store coupons for 50 cents to $1 a box and then good Kashi deals at Target, Meijer, and just this past week CVS. Hope this helps and good luck.
Jan says
Big Lots is a great place to find organic cereal for a good price! I often get Cascadian and Nature’s Path there.
maggie says
Awesome job running! Half marathon training is not bad at all. I have never been an athlete, but I started running in July after our second baby. I was hooked. After three 5Ks in the summer/fall, in November I ran my first half marathon! Now training for another half in May.
I love listening to an iPod stocked with great music like Lincoln Brewster, Hillsong United, Chris Tomlin, Jeremy Camp, Vicky Beeching, MercyMe, etc… It has become a wonderful time of worship as well as a break from motherhood!
You can do it!! Keep up the great work!!
Deana says
My husband used to run 10 miles every day to keep his Marine Corps “figure”, lol…He would eat oatmeal with peanut butter and brown sugar…sugar for the glucose, peanut butter for the protein and oatmeal because, of course, it’s good for you…the best part for me?… when you stirred it all together it tasted kind of like a peanut butter cookie 🙂
Tanya says
Good luck! Wish I had advice, but I feel your pain probably times 10! My husband is an avid bicyclist and part-time runner. It’s not uncommon for him to go through one box of cereal in two days…the worst – he only eats Kashi. And that is why my grocery budget is higher than most, but totally worth it. I run, currently training for a half, but never felt like my need for food increased that greatly. I thought it did when I was training for a full, but I ended up gaining weight so obviously my body didn’t “need” that many extra calories.
Heather G says
I began running January 2010 and am currently training for my second Half Marathon. Running is such a fun community sport to take part in and now I’m totally addicted to the last 100 yards of every race I run. It is fantastic! Go for the Half Marathon and chose a fun one! (They even have coupon codes to help discount race entry fees!)
Everyone has tips based on what works well for them and here is mine. My tip would be to mix back in some of the P90X cross training pieces to help with strength training and reduce the monotony of only running. Your body will thank you.
Granola bars are great for energy too and they have been on sale lately.
Good luck to you and Jesse! Thanks for all you do to help us find the deals!
Allison says
There have been some good $2/1 Kashi coupons on RecycleBank lately. With a sale you could use them to get some cheap cereal.
Good luck with the 5k. I’m a runner too.
Shannon says
Sometimes our local Dillon’s has “manager’s specials” on Malt O Meal cereal. I was able to get a big bag of frosted mini wheats for only $2 and the following week I got a big bag of cheerios (or whatever MOM calls them) for only $2.19
Dawn says
I was just at Kroger today where they had certain General Mills cereal for $2.18. I had $0.75 internet coupons (that doubled to $1.50) and was able to score 2 boxes of Chex and 2 boxes of Cinnamon Cheerios for $0.68 each!
Sarah says
Crystal I’m training for my first 5k next month too! My goal has been to run a half marathon and THIS will be the year! I just had a baby about 2 months ago and I am having a hard time getting into shape so we’ll see how much of the 5k I actually end up running, lol. Good luck to you and Jesse! 🙂
Lara says
Have you tried Aldi’s store-brand cereal? It’s much cheaper than the name-brands. I’m not a cereal-eater, but my son switched from General Mills / Kelloggs / Post to the Aldi cereals with no complaints.

Good luck with the 5k training! As someone who didn’t start running until after I passed the age of 40, I think it is great that you are starting out much younger. It has now been 2 1/2 years since I first started training for a 5K and now I have run several half marathons. Running is fun! 🙂 Lots of good carbs, protein, and foods with vitamin C are all important to keep those muscles healthy!
September says
I’m a distance runner and when I’m seriously training the grocery bill definitely feels it! Last January I did the Goofy Challenge at WDW (it’s a 39.3 marathon and a half) and by the last month pre-race I actually didn’t care what it cost–I was just eating everything that wasn’t nailed down. Definitely consider the half (or even a full!)–I didn’t start running until after my five year old was born and now I can’t imagine living without it. Once you can consistently do three miles it’s just a matter of training and mentally comitting and you can do anything.
Lisa says
I had never been a runner but some friends and I decided it would be a great goal to be able to run a 5K. We started the Couch to 5K program in the late winter last year and found a 5K to run in May. Let me tell you, being able to run the WHOLE thing without stopping once was probably one of the most exhilarating things I’ve ever done! And now I really enjoy running, something I NEVER thought I would like. I wish you well in your running journey, Crystal! It’s awesome! 🙂
Allie says
I also did the couch to 5k program and can’t say enough good things about it! I’m working on the bridge to 10k program now and my long term goal is to run the Disney Princess Half Marathon next year.
Heather says
Disney races are so much fun! That’s a great goal! I have fun three Disney half marathons and would have never imagined how much fun running 13.1 miles could be! 🙂
Crystal says
Way to go!

my publix has kelloggs crunchy nut bogo this week I have $1 off target and $1 man. coupon this will make them free.

Raw oats with milk is cheap. You can either keep it in the fridge and it will go all creamy or eat it straight away. No nasty additives or sugar in there either, just oats and milk.
🙂
Marie says
I agree about the sparse cereal deals. I sure do miss that Kashi deal with the $5 gc that Target used to do!
Mary Jo says
My husband asked me to do the same thing recently! I had gotten a bunch of Barbara’s Bakery cereal for $0.25/box combining a sale with coupons at Kroger and he got used to having a bowl every night. There definitely aren’t deals like that on healthy cereal often, so I’m happy with anything under $2 for higher quality cereals.
Dawn says
I ran my first 10k and my first half marathon last year. I was supposed to run my first marathon in November, but had a knee injury 3 weeks before. Turns out that the main cause of my injury was lack of fuel for my body. I wasn’t supplementing at all, just trying to eat lots of fruits and veggies and drink a lot of water. Anyway, I have learned a lot the hard way. Running is very therapeutic to me. I have started reading, “Marathoning for Mortals.” It is a great book, I recommend you read it before beginning your half marathon training. Before you know it, a 5k will be your easy day run:)
Corrie says
I noticed that one of the boxes of Crunchy Nut cereal in your picture has the “try it free” offer on the box. I just snagged my box at Walmart this evening {using my $1/1 coupon} and have my rebate ready to drop in the mail tomorrow. 🙂 It’s worth the cost of the stamp…and I’ve had good success w/Kelloggs’ offers. 🙂
My hubby and I moved to Texas from SC this past summer, and I have noticed that couponing is not as gratifying here. Stores don’t seem to run the big BOGO sales that I was used to, and more often than not, I am better off just shopping at Aldi {which is about 40 seconds from our apartment!}. But I can’t complain, b/c they have milk for 99 cents and eggs for 49 cents here! Interesting how varied the shopping is in different areas of our nation.
Jennifer says
This is kind of off-topic but I put it under this post because it has to do with Dillons. Does anyone know if we can use the ecoupons that we download onto our Dillons card along with a manu coupon? I know when I download a digital coupon on Dillons.com that it says that it cannot be combined with any other coupons. However, when I’ve tried looking up the Dillons corporate coupon policy, which I couldn’t really find one, all the blogs state that you can stack them. Does anyone know? (Oh, and I live in Kansas…don’t know if that makes a difference.) I just want to make sure that what I am doing is ethical. Thanks!! 🙂
Crystal says
Last I knew, their corporate policy had changed to say you can’t stack them.
Becky in KY says
Interesting topic about stacking the digital and paper coupons. I’d heard it wasn’t possible to do, but they both come off my total fine when I shop at Kroger. Since it works and nobody ever said anything about it, I thought it was fine. Might have to try to look it up — like you said, don’t want to do something unethical.
Johanna says
I too live in KS, Wichita area, and my Dillons still stacks coupons. My understanding is that it varies by region and even by store. Some stores are also picky about the number of IP you can use as well.
Susan says
I’ve got tons of cereal too, so hopefully the deals here will work their way eastward to you. Lots of Kellogg coupons on their site and GM cereals on coupons.com right now, so print those babies so you’ll have them when a good sale comes along.
Erin says
We have had a lot of good cereal deals here lately (so cal). Hopefully they will make their way to your area soon!
I’m a runner too, good luck with your first 5k! A good book for newbies, or any runner really, is Run Like a Mother. It was really encouraging to me as I trained for my first half-marathon.
Ashley says
My husband does triathlons almost every weekend/everyother weekend in the spring-fall and the last 2 years he has done Ironman Louisville and Ironman Wisconsin so I definatly hear ya on the increasesd food consumption! It is definatly a budget killer March-November for me!!!
Crystal says
Oh wow!
Lori says
Crystal~ As I’m here training for my 5th marathon I totally understand the hunger. I have found that cereal doesn’t do a great job of filling me up and replenishing those fuel reserves I need for a run. Things that do help are a snack before the run, pb on toast or a cheese stick, or the same type of snack after, popped popcorn that I add peanuts to. I’ve found that the extra protein helps fill me up without adding too many excess calories and definitely provides fuel for those runs. Keep up the running ~ it’s a great stress reliever and something you can do with the kids (pushing strollers, them riding bikes/scooters)…

Kellogs – $5 in coupons
Montessa says
Check your Walmart. I just bought a box of Cascadian Farms granola and on they back there were three coupons $1 off your next box of cereal, $1 off granola bars & $1.50 off fresh produce. Plus the cereal was on roll back for $2.68. I paid full price for my first box and now each time I use the coupon and get it for only $1.77 with tax plus I still have the $1.50 off produce.
casey says
Wow, a $1.50 off fresh produce coupon?! Really? That’s wonderful. Do you have to purchase something else with it (like buy box of cereal AND produce to get the $1.50 off?) This sounds like a great deal. I might need to head to Walmart 🙂
Montessa says
Nope you just have to buy at least a $1.50 in produce and then you can use the coupon. Definitely head to Walmart and see if yours carries it
Jessica Ross says
When did you receive your Coffeemate coupon(s) in the mail? I was able to get through on Feb. 4 but still have not received anything yet 🙁

My dad and I both received ours last week
Mary S. says
I received mine at the end of last week. I would give it a few more days.

Go for the half marathon! You will love it. I started running in April 2009 – never had before, and I ran a half marathon in April 2010. You can do it!
Christine says
Try Amazon.com! I scored some Lucky Charms and Honey Nut Cheerios the other day for less than $2/box. I have Amazon Prime and Amazon Mom account and with “Save and Subscribe,” Amazon grocery is pretty cheap with free shipping delivered right to your door.
By the way, good luck on your 5K. I did my first 5K about a month ago and I’m doing a couple more this summer.
Erin says
Ditto the granola. My husband and I both run (him- marathons and triathlons, crazy man! + me- shorter distances!) and he really likes a bowl of granola, PowerBars, smoothies, yogurt, or a heaping bowl of pasta at night!
Good luck in your 5k. Races are fun- I love the free tshirts the best 🙂
Deborah says
I don’t know if Publix is in your area (it’s a southeast chain), but they have buy one get one free deals every week on some kind of cereal, and there are coupons to match about half the time.
That being said, I only buy “healthy” cereals, and eve with the deals and coupons, I consider anything under $2 a good buy, since it’s usually the high sugar cereals that have the best deal. My husband gets his morning pre-workout carb-load from cereals, so that’s what I’ve settled on for a good price (pre deal/coupon, those boxes of cereal are usually $4+ a box). I also make homemade granola because that is incredibly cheap to make in bulk, so he eats half cereal, half granola in his bowl.
Sarah K. @ The Pajama Chef says
aww how fun that you two are training for a 5k! good luck with that 🙂 how do you like running? i’ve been a runner for many years and am training for a marathon in may. my husband is training for a 10k and we eat sooo much food now, it’s crazy. over the past 2 weeks, we ate 3 boxes of cereal and it’s just the 2 of us!
danaldrman says
Crystal, you might like to try homemade granola. It’s really healthy & nutrient dense, and you can use your own unprocessed or organic foods to make it. Ours comes out a lot cheaper than boxed cereal (we use bulk ingredients from the health food store like 59 cents/lb oatmeal). Here’s a sample recipe which you could adapt:
http://www.amateurgourmet.com/2009/01/easy_homemade_g.html
My husband, who’s training for a triathlon, loves to make single serve batches for himself in the toaster oven. But, I bet you could make one big batch and store it for the convenience of boxed cereal.
Crystal says
I love homemade granola and have a yummy batch in the freezer right now. My husband, on the other hand, is not so fond of it!
Your recipe looks yummy!
Rae says
Have you already gotten the cereal deal at cvs yet this week?
Crystal says
We don’t have CVS here. I miss it so much! 🙁
Lori Goebel says
I wonder if you are running the same 5K my husband and I are entering. It’s a fundraiser for a little girl with Leukemia. He’ll be running and I’ll be walking with the kids. I agree that cereal deals have been sparse. I’ve been buying the always save brand at Leeker’s. 32 ozs. of Raisin bran for $3.19. It’s hard to beat that price.
I was at DIllons tonight to get some danimals yogurt and found Dan-O-Ninos’ marked down to $0.99, so they were free with my $0.50 coupons, though the cashier tried to tell me you couldn’t use coupons on marked down items because they were already giving you a deal. I set him straight on that one. I bought quite a lot and have it in the freezer.
Crystal says
What a great deal! I love finding yogurt markdowns!
Tracey says
Do you have a Rite Aid nearby? They are having a BOGO sale on select Kellogg’s cereal & Special K & Fiber One cereal bars. They also released some high value coupons on http://www.better-coupons.com/kellogg/index.html. The sale plus the high value coupons should make for some good deals. Hope that helps!
Crystal says
We don’t have a Rite Aid here. How I wish!
Lea says
🙁 You don’t have a Rite Aid or CVS??? I can’t imagine stocking household items without either! I completely respect your frugal lifestyle even more now!
Crystal says
Yes, ’tis sad but true! We do have Walgreens, but I’ve not found them to be very coupon-friendly here.
However, I often can get great deals on household products by watching for great sales at Dillon’s and Target and pairing coupons with them.
But I sure do miss CVS (I shopped there a lot when we lived in Kansas City!)
Candi says
Have fun with your 5K! My husband and I have done 3 and planning to do 3 more this year. I’m not very fast, but I finish and it means a lot to accomplish that. 🙂
Jessica says
Do you have a military base near you?
You’ll need a friend with a military ID but they routinely have cereal priced at $1/box {using the in store coupons, sitting on a rip pad right in front of them}. It’s hit or miss whether they will have non-sugar laden cereal for that price, but that is where I routinely find the best deal.
Have you tried chia seeds in your diet yet? When my husband did his half iron man back in the fall that is one new food he introduced into our diet. Turned into a gel we think they’re fabulous and we still prepare it, even tho neither of us are officially training.
WilliamB says
While it’s not uncommon to “help” a nonmilitary friend shop at a commissary, it’s against the law and can lead to the military member losing his commissary privilege.
Commissaries are less expensive because they are nonprofits, are exempt from state and local taxes, and – because they benefit the military – use Base space without rent. This gives them unfair advantage over commercial groceries, another reason their use is restricted to military members.
Jessica says
Thanks William! I was completely unaware of that, though that makes entire sense. Thanks for clarifying.
Brian says
I live in Lexington Ky and the Krogers here only doubles coupons up to $.50 cents. Just wondering how you get the $.55 coupons to double?
Crystal says
Our Dillon’s (Kroger affiliate) “doubles” coupons from $0.55 up to $1. From what I’ve heard, this is not a very widespread coupon policy for Kroger stores.
Sarah says
How funny…we have cereal coming out of our ears! Lots of great deals…about $.88-$1.38/box from our Kroger affiliate. (Fry’s in AZ)
Is it making you hungrier than when you did P90X because I wouldn’t think so…that’s very grueling. I ran a 5K last year. I had to be smart about what I ate before and after my runs but didn’t have an increase in food consumption from walking an hour a day before to running up to an hour/day varying my workouts.
Crystal says
I think I’m burning about the same amount of calories as P90X (typically 500 to 600 calories/day). It’s a different kind of calorie burn, though, since I’m not doing the weight-training I was doing with P90X. It seems to not be exhausting me so much (near the end of P90X, I felt like I was having to consume so much protein just to keep up with how much I was burning, but I think it had to do with weight-lifting).
I’m curious to see what I think of running longterm. I’ve never been a runner before, so this feels way out of my league, but I’m enjoying it nonetheless! 🙂
Angie says
This is encouraging and timely. I used to run regularly in my teens and 20’s with my Dad who ran for decades and ran a few marathons until hip and knee problems caused him to quit.
After getting married and having children, running sort of dropped from my priority list, but lately I have considered taking it up again, and possibly doing it competitively starting with 5Ks. I had never run competitively before.
Right now the only running I have managed is on the Wii. My husband works a lot of hours, not leaving much time for me without the children who are too little to be left alone. I guess Wii running is better than nothing for now.
I was feeling completely inadequate to run competitively, until I read that you had never been a runner before. I do plan to figure out how to fit in at least 3 days a week of outdoor running before attempting any 5 or 10Ks.
How far in advance did you begin you training?
kim says
@Angie – Couch 2 5K is a great start – google Ullery couch25K for some GREAT free podcasts…
Angie says
Thank you for the idea for free pod-casts (couch 2 5K). When I read the other comments I found the couch 2 5K mentioned but didn’t see anything about free pod-casts.
Ashley @ http://reflectingonthesimplethingsinlife.blogspot.com/ says
I hope you both like the Crunchy Nut cereal….I found that it was too sweet for me.
Jennifer says
I bought several of these boxes last week on sale and with the coupon. We had never tried it and really like it!! It’s got a hint of sweetness to it but compared to some other cereals, we don’t think it’s too sweet. But to each his own, right? 🙂
marcia streefkerk says
Protein pancakes! no flour, but rolled oats, eggwhites, cinnamon, and cottage cheese. Put in food processor and cook! I usually make a double or triple batch and freeze.
Jen says
The protein pancakes sound like a great way to get natural protein instead of using the powders. My brother’s doctor warned him against using the protein powders because of the problems with manufacturing and using filler ingredients that replicate protein in lab tests but are not good for you (remember the chicken food and baby formula from China the other year?).
Kelly says
I also make protein pancakes using rolled oats, cottage cheese, eggs, vanilla and a banana. Top with a little peanut butter and roll up burrito style – very yummy! They are a little rubbery after being refrigerated (haven’t tried freezing them), but still pretty good.
Chris J. says
So you were one of the lucky ones who acually got through to the website for the Coffee Mate Facebook offer? Boy did that deal end up ticking a lot of people off. It seemed they were very unprepared for the volume of internet traffic that came through.
Selena says
Do you have a Shoprite near you? They are having dollar days. Good deals on cereal.
Lynette @ Cleverly Simple says
Crystal, check Amazon as well. They’ve had some good grocery deals on cereal lately. Right now you can use coupon code KELRTEC2 to score Kellogg’s cereal for an additional 10% OFF on top of the “subscribe and save” 15% OFF.
Of course with Amazon you see a deal and then it’s gone… but at least it’s delivered to your door!
elizabeth says
This won’t help with the cereal, but another good snack to make ahead is Whole Wheat Waffles or Whole Wheat Pancakes. I use the recipe on trainermama.blogspot.com and add protein powder to the dry mix for both recipes. I also double the cinnamon in the waffles and chocolate chips to the pancakes. My two boys (age 12 and 15) love these; 4 pancakes or 1 – 1.5 waffles fills them up until lunchtime at school and no syrup or butter or anything else needed as far as they are concerned. Maybe these would be a snack alternative for your husband. At the very least, it’s a healthy breakfast idea for you, especially while you train. Good luck on the 5K!
Crystal says
Oh, thanks for that great idea! I’d not considered adding protein powder to waffles or pancakes!
WilliamB says
I think a more frugal and natural options would be to add nuts or seeds to the pancakes, and/or top with peanut butter or a soft cheese.
Do you find your appetite increased for a 3.1 mile run? I ask because I never did.
As to your question about marathon training, it – as with all running-related dietary issue – depends on the runner. My roommate ate 1500-2000 extra calories when he got into the higher-mile portions of his schedule (over 40 mi/week). I, on the other hand, only ate about 500 cal more when I was training for a half marathon; I think my higher-mileage weeks were in the 25 mi/week range.
One more dietary note: runner need more carbs to fuel the aerobic activity; it’s weightlifters who need extra protein, to build or rebuild muscle mass.
Does your husband like oatmeal? It’s great stuff, you can add sweet or savory items to it, cheap, whole grain, easy to make. You probably don’t need to be told this but just in case: get it in a canister (not instant, but 1 min or 3 min is good) and avoid the overprocessed, overchemicaled individual instant packets.
Cereal: I’ve been seeing some coupons for $1/1 Quaker Oatmeal Squares. It has a lot of sugar and is calorie-dense (eat it slowly), but other than that it’s all good: all the grains are whole, it’s chex-size squares so good as a dry snack, and tasty.
Crystal says
Um, yes, my appetite has definitely increased. 🙂 I’m running/walking about five miles total each day, though, and typically burning at least an extra 500 calories. Since I’m at the low end of a healthy body weight, I’m finding that I definitely have to eat more. I can’t imagine what I’d be like if I were training for a marathon!
That’s amazing you only had to eat 500 extra calories per day when you were training for a half marathon!
Oh and my husband is doing a weight-lifting program plus training for a 5K, so he’s pretty much hungry all the time! 🙂
kim says
You’re burning 500 calories a day running/walking five minutes?! 🙂 hahaha! Im’ guessing you meant 50 minutes maybe?
I just finished running my first 1/2 marathon in Myrtle Beach two weekends ago…it was SO much fun! The training was definitely more grueling than the actual race, though. The winner of the race I was in was a GIRL and she qualified for the 2012 olympic trials! If she makes it in, I’m gonna say, “I SO ran a race with this girl!!” (even though she finished the full marathon a full 30 minutes before I finished the half…hahahaa!) 🙂
Crystal says
I think I said “5 miles” — at least that’s what it looks like I said up there. 🙂 And yes, it’s around 50-60 minutes since I’m walking and running. Hopefully, I can eventually run the whole five miles. 🙂
kim says
ha! my bad – you’re right…yeah – 500 extra calories after running 5 miles a day – you’re right on track there! Keep it up!
Angela says
I too, was able to get the Crunchy Nut cereal for .50 cents at Target, combining the store coupon with the Kellogg’s printable. Regular price was 2.50. Also, don’t know if you have HyVee where you are, but their new ad that starts tomorrow has 50 percent off all Kelloggs cereal this week, so with coupons, could be some good deals there as well.
Crystal says
I was so disappointed that our Target was all out of them when I went. 🙁
Montessa says
mine too:(
Corinne says
The next time this happens at Target, before you leave the store, stop at the Customer Service desk and ask if you can be given a raincheck. I don’t shop at Target so I don’t know their policy but so many other stores will do this. Doesn’t hurt to ask.
melissa says
How do you see the HyVee add early?
KK says
You can see it on Tuesdays if you go to their website and select a city where they start the ad on Tuesday. Where I live it starts on Wednesday, but I always select the Cedar Rapids, IA location (there’s like 6 or so of them) and it will have the ad up on Tuesday because their ad starts on Tuesday. It’s the same with Fareway, if you have one of those stores in your area. The Cedar Rapids Fareways start their ad on Tuesday also.

does he like oatmeal? i enjoy an evening snack of oatmeal, topped with fresh apple pieces, sprinkled with cinnamon (microwave til warm), then add a dab of yogurt. i make a batch of old fashioned oats and divy it out over several evenings. tastes like dessert and is sooooo satisfying.

Where do you find so many marked down items at Dillons? We don’t have Dillons but have Kroger and I can rarely find anything marked down…much less fruit, OJ, lunch meat, or any of the other things you have found. Please help and let me know the secrets of when it is best to get what marked down and where you find them.

I’ve found that each store is very different as far as markdowns go. If you have more than one store in your area, try going at different times on different days and see what you find. It seems some of them routinely mark down things more often (and for less!) than others.

Also, just ask when you’re at Kroger. I now have a pretty good relationship with the guy who marks down bread, simply cause I actually stopped and took time to talk to him. He will now tell me if he’s marked things down yet for the day when I get there. 🙂 It can’t hurt to ask.

April, go in the evenings, and yes, ask the department managers. We don’t have Dillon’s here, but I’ve gotten good deals on bread and fruit/veggies by shopping after 9:00 pm at my local Kroger affiliate.

Be sure to watch Amazon! They have great cereal deals frequently!

Ah, the post run hunger, I know it well. I like to call it ‘runger.’
It’s funny you mentioned cereal because when I was marathon training, I craved HUGE bowls of cereal after my long runs.
I hope you manage to find some good cereal deals in your neck of the woods. I was able to get two boxes of that Crunchy Nut cereal for .50 a box today, but I’m in Northern Virginia, so that certainly doesn’t help you at all.
Good luck with your 5k training!

I’ve not really been buying cereal since we’ve been mostly subsisting on oatmeal, toast, etc. but with my husband’s increased workout schedule, the oatmeal just ain’t cutting it. 🙂
How many marathons have you run? I’m so impressed with people who have the stamina and discipline to do marathons!
alison says
I’ve only run one marathon, but it was a pleasant enough experience that I’ll run another some day. I think the training is a lot more taxing (physically and time wise) than the actual race.
Runners are a strange breed! 😉

Kudos to you!

I always say that runners are an entirely different breed. My husband has run several marathons. I’m trying to remember…maybe 15-20?
His best time is 2:47 or something like that. He’s paying for it now though with quite a few injuries (maybe it’s age!)
Anyway, just thought I’d give you a few tips since my husband works out almost every night and needs to eat afterwards.
He’ll mix homemade granola with store bought cereal. Probably a little bit better for you and the cereal lasts longer that way.
We have smoothie night on Wednesdays and I’ll make extra for the freezer. Make sure you use a lot of bananas if you are going to do this or the texture seems odd. I think he leaves in on the counter for 30 minutes or so to thaw out.
I always have peanuts on hand….sometimes he’ll mix peanuts and raisins together.
Sometimes he’ll have homemade yogurt with some homemade strawberry “spread” (frozen strawberries mixed with sugar and boiled down). He might add granola to that as well.
I don’t run anymore, but when I did I was starving all the time!
Good luck to you with your training.
