We made a trip to Aldi for most of our groceries and then picked up a big roast and three packages of Sterling Silver ground sirloin from Dillon’s (plus some ice cream!). All totaled, we spent right around $54 on groceries this week.
And that was that.
I’m planning to have another Mini Freezer Cooking Day this coming week and make another big batch of Homemade Oatmeal Packets, some Homemade Baking Mix (recipe coming later on this week) and meatballs and meatloaf for the freezer.
I’m also hoping to jump back into using more coupons this week after taking a break from them for a few weeks. The break was nice, but we’re getting low on some things, so I can’t slack for too long lest I end up paying full price for toothbrushes or something! 🙂

Thanks for the link up! I love linking up my savings!
Thank you as always! 🙂
I just took a break too. The beginning of the school year always throws my schedule for a loop. I went to Meijer yesterday and spent $32 for $83 worth of items. A trip like that reminds me of why I do this in the first place.
Aldi’s is a great place to shop for many things -their milk was a $1.59 this week in my area. Of course it was my husband who picked up the milk so after the things he bought not sure how much we saved….
vickie
Okay, this is just horrible news that I recently found out about. Almost all ice creams including Breyers (who also makes Edy’s – my favorite) uses milk with hormone rBGH which is so scary that it’s banned in Europe and Canada. Brands that don’t are Ben and Jerry’s and Starbucks. Isn’t it frustrating that we have to pay premium to get safe ice cream? I’m doing it now though . . . we’re just have ice cream a little less often or with something else for example an ice cream cookie sandwich or on the side of apple crisp. Just thought the readers may want to know. Frustrating, isn’t it, that our government turns the other way!
@Laura, Have you watched Food, Inc.? It is so scary what goes on in our food. I wish we were better informed.
@Laura,
Wow, thanks for posting this! I’m always on the lookout making sure I’m buying milk that doesn’t contain rBGH – I never thought about ice cream! I looked right on Breyers website and it does say they ” are unable to guarantee that rBGH is not used” . .. I’m sad, I love Breyers ice cream!
@Laura, I really wouldn’t worry too much. This is how food has been for the past few generations and most people have been fine just by eating healthy. Don’t let a fear take over what foods you love the most!
@Laura, WOW! I did not know this. I wonder if that is in washington too? We do not sell any milk here with rBGH in it. I am now going to make a better choice. Thankfully we still get coupons for the Sbux and B&J.
@Laura, Ugh! We have a carton of Breyer’s in the freezer right now and it is going straight into the garbage can. Thanks for sharing this information!
I like how 3 pounds of meat is stock up for you. I use 2 for every meal that has beef in it. There are 7 of us though. Stock up for me would be like 20 lbs.
That’s actually almost 8 pounds of meat — which, when alternating with chicken, will last us for around two weeks (possibly more). Since I grew up in a family of nine, I well remember 2 pounds barely being enough for one meal and am grateful we’re not at that point yet!
I had hoped to find a better place to add this site Crystal as so many people use soy as a protein substitute, including myself for a long time. i was hoping this would be helpful to your readers that seek healthy food choices. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/09/18/soy-can-damage-your-health.aspx
So I made up a huge batch of oatmeal packets. I added 3/4 cup of boiling water and it was gross! The oatmeal wasn’t cooked at all and after I finished eating it I had a stomach ache for the rest of the morning. Did I do something wrong?
@Katie Kerr, I just want to make sure that it is clear that I am not upset. I really want it to work since I usually buy instant and it is so expensive. I really appreciate all the info on the blog.
@Katie Kerr, I am not sure what post you are referring too, but I always find with oatmeal that you have to add more water then it calls for. Would that help? 🙂
@Katie Kerr,
I love oatmeal in any form and have found that it digests easier when it’s been soaked in a liquid for at least 8- 12 hours. I usually eat steel cut or old fashioned and mix up my oat meal just how I would for cooking (I use milk) and let it sit in the fridge overnight. I’m not sure how the instant packets work but you could probably soak them the same way. For me, it makes a huge difference in keeping a tummy ache at bay.
I’d suggest trying to actually boil it or add more water and stir vigorously and see if that makes a difference. You could also try putting all the oatmeal in the food processor so it breaks down more before adding the water.
And if you’re not used to eating rolled oats on a regular basis, it could just be that.
Crystal,
Thank for sharing the bargains. I just love all the healthy food you buy. When I begain couponing in June I was worried it would be all prepackage food. I am so glad you share food that is good for you and your kids.
Have a great Sunday!!
Hey for all those going to Krogers this week – The Uncle Ben’s whole grain white rice is on sale for $1.50. You can buy 4 and use 2 BOGO coupons, plus there was a blinkie at my store that gave out $1/1 coupons. I paid 50 cents for each box of rice!
I had a pretty sweet week at Kroger.
Great finds! Thanks for the link as I did great at Whole Foods this week!
I did a big grocery trip this week for meat as well since I had 12% off with Giant Eagle Foodperks. Gotta love it. I also had a great trip to the corn farm market and got a lot of produce for $14. And then today we picked like a 1/2 bushel of apples for $5- Jonathans.
I did an Aldi shopping trip as well, and I noticed that their can veggies are significantly a better deal than the frozen. Is there some health reason to buy frozen over canned?
We usually prefer frozen as the nutrients are higher in them. However, we still do buy canned green beans as my husband loves those!
@Lynn DeGroff, If you’re concerned about BPA, the lining of cans contains it (except for a rare few brands, like Eden organics) and there are some concerns that it can leech into your food. I personally go with a strategy of moderation in most things, so I do still use some canned products, but I try to keep it at a minimum when I am able to.
Hey Crystal –
Just a quick random question: Any reason you bought your frozen veggies from Aldi instead of Dillons this week? (Our Aldi frozen veg price is $0.89 and at dillons this week they are $0.88)
Do you find the quality better? Thanks!
No, it was called a planning fail. I didn’t look the Dillon’s ad before going to Aldi — not that $0.01 makes that much difference, though. 🙂
Thanks for sharing! I Love clicking through the links! Is Super Saturday Savings moved to Saturday night now? I try to make Sundays a no computer day at my house and I forget to go back to see if it went up Saturday night! I’ve got to remember to go back during the week!
Yes, I’ve moved it to Saturday night for now.
Hi! Thanks for the link up! I’ll make sure I visit on Sunday next week. Have a great night!
I guess it’s actually Sunday! I’ve got my dates mixed up.
