Some of Our Very Favorite Things
We’ve had some pretty heavy topics on the podcast recently, so we decided to do something fun and more lighthearted for this week’s episode of The Crystal Paine Show.
I asked on Instagram for your best ideas for a lighthearted podcast topic idea and many of you requested that Jesse and I do a Favorite Things episode.
So pretend you’re sitting down at the table with us having coffee (or tea!) and let’s talk about some of our favorite things. We tell you our favorite:
- Book
- Movie
- Season
- Place We’ve Lived
- Bible Verse
- Color
- Podcast
- Place We’ve Traveled To
- Fruit/Vegetable
- Thing We Love About Each Other
A Note On This Recording
We recorded the first half of the episode right before we left for our Foster Care licensing training (our last training session! Yay! Now we start our home study!). We didn’t have enough time to get it all recorded, so we ended up recording all of the Favorite Things section after 10 p.m. — which would have been 3 a.m. Iceland time (we had just gotten back from Iceland the night before).
So if you listen closely and are confused as to why we mention it being late and us being tired in the second half, that’s why! I should have done a better job of explaining this in the episode since we start out the episode talking about recording it in the late afternoon. 🙂

Foster care is simultaneously the worst thing I’ve ever done and the best thing I’ve ever done. I say worst, because it’s by far the hardest experiences I’ve ever gone through, but best, because it’s by far the best experiences I’ve ever gone through. The best advice I can give (after 7 years of being a foster parent and 11 years of working in the foster care system) is to remember that you’ll be working in a broken system with broken people (from the workers to the courts to the kids to their parents and to yourselves) and it’s going to be frustrating and awful and there is a total lack of control for foster parents (which a lot of times is the hardest part), but God is in control and has always been in control. And he is wiser and stronger and fuller and better and more all the things than we ever could be, and his grace is sufficient for your family, the foster children, and their parents. <3<3<3

Thank you so much for this encouragement! I have no idea what the future holds, but we’re just trusting that God is in this and leading us and He will continue to give us strength and wisdom each step of the way.

We fostered for 15 years and have 7 adopted kids and 2 bios.
It was a beautiful journey, but there were some bumps along the way.
When folks ask how we did it our answer was ‘how can we not do it’. We always thought of our part of being the bridge for the children. Safe, loving and consistent. So after 98 children our hearts are full and we have loved seeing the transformation. Whether it be back to their bio family or their forever family God has lifted us, sometimes carried us, through the change in our family. I am a better person after being a foster mom! Good luck and many blessings.

98 children?! That is AMAZING! Thank you so much for pouring so much into these kids and families! You’re an inspiration!
Jody says
Crystal, I continue to be inspired by you after all these years of reading along. What an impactful step your family is taking as you begin the journey of foster care. I will be praying for you and the kids and families that your lives become intertwined with as you open your home in such a beautiful way. May God richly bless you and carry you and infuse you with His love and wisdom for each child, family and circumstances you encounter on this new path. Praying for you and your family and praising Him for the way you continue to open yourself up and allow yourself to be used to touch and impact others.
Crystal Paine says
Thank you so much, Jody! I’m excited to see what God has in store for us and how He is going to grow our family through the children and adults we’ll be interacting with and walking with.
