We are staunch Kansas City Royals fans… and have been for years. So we are thrilled that they have made it this far into the post-season!
There’s only one problem: the post season games aren’t on non-cable TV. So we’ve had to get creative. 🙂
Jesse purchased a subscription to MLB.com at the beginning of baseball season, so he was able to hook the video feed from that up to our TV. Then, he was able to get the audio feed from cable TV through MLB.com, too. The video and audio feed don’t match, but between the two of them, it’s almost like watching it live on cable.
It’s so fun to come up with creative solutions like this. Okay, so it’s not quite as great as watching the actual TV coverage — especially because the camera angles aren’t as great — but it works and it’s a lot less expensive than paying a cable bill every month. 🙂
This has nothing to do with saving money, but this was our excitement for the day…
We noticed our ceiling was all bubbled up and wet last night. We weren’t sure what was going on, but we discontinued using the bathroom/shower/tub right above that spot and called our landlords.
They sent a handyman out to investigate today. He checked our shower, our tub, and cut into the ceiling to see what was going on up there.
He ruled out some possibilities, but we still aren’t sure what’s up as nothing was conclusive. However, we’re watching it carefully and hoping to get to the bottom of things soon.
We’ve had so many interesting house issues recently: earwig infestations, drainage issues, pipe issues, caulking issues, refrigerator issues, and now this leak. Between all of this, it’s almost becoming abnormal to not have some repair person working at our house on any given day!
We’re so grateful for our kind and gracious landlords. They are certainly getting their money’s worth on the home warranty they purchased for this rental house. Yikes!
We feel so badly that we keep having to call them with another issue. And yet, we know it’s better to take care of things right away than to let them fester or grow worse.

I bought Christmas presents for our children today using points we earned on Amazon through our Amazon Card. We use it everywhere, like a debit card, pay it off completely each month, and use the points for things we buy on Amazon. Now Christmas shopping for our kids is done, and it was all free. Love it!

I saved by serving up this week’s leftovers for breakfast and lunch.

We went to our state fair today. Before we went, I looked online on the fair’s website to find out about more deals. We participated in their “Read and Ride” program and each of the kids got 3 free rides at the fair! All you had to do was read 3 books and have them either summarize the books or draw a picture on the back of the form if they were under 6. To get a discounted admission ticket – $2 per adult (the kids were free!), we arrived before 2pm. So, we got admission to the fair for a family of 4 and 6 free rides for $4!

Sorry to add more to my savings post but I also went to Kohls to we that Rock the Rock(unsure of brand now) jeans for $10 off. Those are normally $50 plus!! Thankfully I saw the advice here and looked through the sales rack.. Only 2 pairs at $17 and some change, but they were a size 6 for my niece. I used the $10 off and the 20% off available… Less than $6 fr a nice pair of jeans.

There were a few coupon deals I wanted to use tonight for gifts(holiday and last minute child birthday party). Barnes and Nobles has a huge clearance selection and luckily, the child’s wish list was books. I managed to get 4 books at 75% off and another at 20% off..$less than $10!!! I had a gift card and ended up going back for some candles (regular 19.99) and puzzles for my kids and inlaws holiday gifts. I asked the cashier if the 20% coupon was one time and she graciously found another coupon and that total was less than $20!! So my holiday stash included 4 puzzles and a candle and a 3 set pack of journals! I’m so grateful I remembered the gift card and that I was able to strike up a conversation with the employee:)

I saved today by staying home and cooking for myself, something that is very difficult to do sometimes. I also resisted the urge to shop impulsively on-line, especially considering all the advertisements and emails inviting me to shop for the holiday. Instead I found other low-cost or no cost ways to entertain myself such as by watching movies on youtube.com, reading, organizing, and listening to my favorite music while multi-tasking.

We made tailgating food for the SEC day on the couch from what we had in the fridge instead of grabbing takeout wings, etc.

I saved money by checking my grocery store receipt and checking in with customer service when I realized that they shorted me over $10 in promotions and coupons. Honestly! I think the registers are rigged to “miss” some of the coupons sometimes.

We finally cut the cord last year and cut cable. We don’t get any channels at all, even with an expensive antennae. So we took that back to the store and now we just have Netflix and I watch some of my local channel shows online.
I learned about making your own chicken stock, so I now make it myself and I have tons in the freezer and feel I never have to buy stock again. My husband prefers boneless breasts but I am happy with the cheaper chicken quarters I get at the meat market for .69lb. That gives me the bones I need for the stock. I just put the bones in a freezer bag in the freezer until I got enough to fill a crock pot. I also put any leftover veggies in the freezer, like the tops and leaves of celery, the ends of onions & tomatoes, anything. So by the time I am ready to make stock, I have everything I need to make free stock. I let it simmer on low for about 24 hours seasoned with salt and pepper and bay leaves or whatever you like, then filter it in a colander over a large pot and then filter again with a paint filter that you can get for free at an auto parts store. I pour into a quart size freezer bag and lay flat to freeze. I even give some to my mom and sister since I have more than I can use. I am learning to make stuff myself instead of using expensive boxed stuff.

I used Target Cartwheel to save big on family staples – Peanut Butter, Rice Milk & frozen veggies. I’m just learning about Target Cartwheel, but the Peanut Butter was such a great savings, it was like buying 3 & getting the 4th free. And I buy the BIG jars. SOOO thankful for what I’ve learned from this blog!

Sorry to hear about your water problems. Have you checked your toilet seal? Our toilet seal leaked and it we didn’t notice it until we saw a spot on our ceiling below the toilet. We also thought it was our shower at first. Then, we realized our bolt on our toilet had loosened and the seal and flange had to be replaced. You may try checking that out.

After meeting our deductible this year, I still had the coinsurance cost to pay for a necessary vein surgery. The bills started piling up for this procedure and I noticed that the anesthesia bill offered a financial hardship option for payment. I figured it was worth a shot. The hour of tracking down the required papers (proof of income, tax returns, current bills, etc.) and facing them in was well worth the $460 savings for which I was approved!

We’re in the middle of rehabbing our new home. We planned on buying 2 new bathroom vanities but decided to reuse the vanity in the upstairs bathroom in the downstairs bathroom. Saved ourselves at least $150! We also ripped out ceiling tiles so the contractor didn’t have to. Saved another $150!

I learned how to hem my own pants keeping the original hem. I hemmed 2 pairs for me and one for my daughter. I always find cute jeans on sale that our way to long. I was so excited and nervous to try this. All 3 pairs turned out great and this is a skill I will use again and again. I love pinterest 🙂 I at least saved 20 dollars if not more by doing this myself.

Teehee. It’s funny. I’m sitting here and realizing that, without even thinking about it, I did a lot of “money-saving things” today. I cooked a pie pumpkin I’d bought for around $1 and got at least 2 large cans’ worth of pumpkin out of it, plus I roasted the seeds for a crunchy snack. Then I cut up some apples that my kids had started but not finished, and cooked them to make applesauce for the baby. I made “day before payday” fried rice using leftover rice and some vegetables that needed to be used up. I went to the grocery store and majorly SCORED on organic baby food pouches on clearance – 20 cents each!!! They’re regularly $1.37 or more, so I stocked up. These will make easy, super-healthy on-the-go snacks for my kids plus will help make feeding the baby easier, as I make much of her food. I also got 3 containers of baby cereal for 80 cents each (regularly $2.18). I bought marked down bananas for banana bread and to freeze for smoothies. Every day my husband makes us coffee in the morning; he grinds the beans (we buy a big bag of whole beans from Sam’s) and makes me an iced coffee that is BETTER than Starbucks and costs a whole lot less!!!

Way to go!!

We wanted to do some kitchen renovations, well rip down a wall to open up the dining room and kitchen more… Luckily my husband and i are carpenters 🙂 (well, now I’m a stay at home mom of 2 under 2)… because it would have cost a fortune to hire someone. So, all in all we are saving about $1000 if not more on doing it ourselves. We started today but will probably finish up tomorrow!!

We made homemade pizza instead of ordering in.

I made homemade pumpkin waffles and froze the leftovers so I can quickly microwave them in the mornings. They’re more filling and much less expensive. I also made a batch of cinnamon rolls, split them and froze the two batches for future use. I also made crock pot chicken noodle soup and froze the leftovers. This way, there isn’t a single ounce of waste and many more meals to come. Lastly, I also ran out of butter (upstairs). We always buy butter when it’s on sale and freeze it. Thus, I was able to go the the basement and pull out a pound. No trip to the store and I didn’t have to buy over priced butter.
Carrie says
We saved a ton today!
My husband changed the wheel bearing on his car – saving us a ton in labor costs of taking it to a mechanic!

Then afterward we had a dinner using up the leftovers in our fridge.

It was our turn today to clean our entire church building before services tomorrow. I knew we would be tired afterwards so this morning I made a nice veggie soup with the all produce on its last legs, puréed it a bit with my immersion blender, and added the leftover hamburger meat and a can of evaporsted milk for creaminess. Delicious especially after a getting to meld together for a while before we ate it.

I saved today by making croutons out of 3 day old french bread. Enjoyed some on my salad for lunch!

I had just a little bit of meat sauce leftover and some spaghetti. The sauce would have probably fed my family of four for one more meal, but the spaghetti wouldn’t have and I really wanted to try to stretch these items out. I decided to make a soup with only items I had on hand (it’s been a tough few months since I didn’t work over the summer) and added the meat sauce to large pot. To that I added a container of broth, some carrots (about 4), cut up potatoes (3 small), frozen spinach, water, and seasoning, but something was lacking. Then I remembered that I had a little bit of homemade pesto in the freezer so I added that and the cut up spaghetti. I wanted to make some bread sticks, but didn’t have the butter necessary for our favorite ones so I made your pizza dough recipe, rolled it out, cut it in strips and added a little olive oil, herbs, and garlic powder. I called it “spaghetti soup” and my children declared it the best soup ever and they loved the bread sticks! I loved that the meal was nutritious, used ingredients I already had, and fed my family for 3 whole meals and a few lunches! It saved me tons of money and time throughout the week with the leftovers.

My daughter’s coat from L.L. Bean, a gift from two winters ago, ended up with a broken zipper at the end of last winter. Even though it was borderline too small, I decided to call take the company up on its 100% satisfaction guarantee. When I called and explained the issue, not only were they very willing to replace the coat, they were happy to replace it with the next larger size! Now I have a $99 coat for free that will easily last her the next two winters! I’m so glad I called and asked about getting a larger size!

My husband wanted to go out to eat tonight. ( which would’ve included 5 of the kids too), but we had three meals of leftovers in the fridge to choose from so I suggested we really should eat in and save a bundle not going out….especially since we had to demo our shower because of a leak and are spending plenty on the supplies for that, but saving by doing the work ourselves!

We picked the last veggies from the garden today to make tomato sauce (spiked with zucchini, squash, spinach and carrots- so the kids didn’t recognize the veggies). Froze 1/2 the sauce and made 2 trays of lasagna (one in the freezer, one went in the oven) with help from the kids every step of the way. While I cleaned up, the little ones arranged and decorated gourds around the house. Fresh air, healthy food, fall decor and a stocked freezer! (Tomorrow is butternut-potato bisque, mmm, we sure will miss the garden!)

Therefore, we had 3 large meal combos for dinner for free. I shared with my youngest and we purchased one meal. We ate for $10, all 5 of us. Fun night out, I did not have to cook. We love lunch and learns. It is a nice treat for our family.

I sat and went thru my coupons. Used about $10 worth at Publix. Got lots of Halloween candy that didn’t look like H. candy. Using coupons on bogof candy makes it cheaper even than the after Halloween sales. (Got deals just as good at Kroger earlier in the week.) We give out lots of candy throughout the year at church. Yes..my husband is that man that passes out candy to kids who can tell him a Bible verse,! Also–went straight past the thrift store where I saw some rubber stamps that I want but do not need. Ran into a snag while out and got home from errands after 1:30 but did not stop for a fast food lunch. We had plenty of stuff to eat at home that I really like.

Last month I received 3 coupons from Carson Pirie Scott. I almost tossed them in the garbage, but this website made me look twice. One coupon was for $50 of clothing, another for $35 for shoes or accessories, and the third was for $15 towards make-up or perfume–with no obligation to buy anything out of pocket!! I thought my eyes were playing a trick on me and had another coupon friend confirm that they were legitimate. I bought one fleece, one champion hooded sweatshirt, one pair of dress shoes, one pair of socks, and 1 Clinique lipstick and spent about $12 out of pocket!! Still smiling about it. :)))

Stopping at random times throughout the week ends up costing me an extra $5 to $10 on unplanned purchases. So I know I saved money yesterday by sticking to my plan!

I was sure my son needed new shoes even though these had minimal wear because they smelled so bad you could smell him coming. It was awful. We went to a theme park recently and his shoes got wet and they haven’t been the same since. They were his one nice pair of Nike tennis shoes. I came across a solution on pinterest and it worked great! You spray rubbing alcohol on the shoes and let them air dry and it kills all the germs. Saved me a good amount of money since he is now in Men’s size 7 so a good deal on decent pair of tennis shoes that will last is hard to find.
MaryAnn says
We had a clean out the fridge day today and ate up all the leftovers so they don’t go to waste.

Instead of seeing Captain America: Winter Soldier in theater or Redbox, we checked it out from the library.

I went grocery shopping today, and did a lot of price matching, plus my usual stop at Aldi. I don’t usually mess with BOGO stuff price matching because my Walmart is not always on the ball or nice about that stuff. I did today, and saved A LOT on cheese, plus regular price matching on fruit. I also work really hard to get my kids on board with all of the saving. They really are, but sometimes need a reminder. 🙂 They are great now at spotting sales, reminding me of what we are out of or NOT out of, etc.
Becky says
I’m trying to exercise more, but instead of joining a gym I am following the “Couch to 5K” program and running in my neighborhood for free. I went out for a run last night and when I got home, washed my running cloths by hand in the sink (didn’t want to leave them all sweaty, but didn’t have enough for a full load) and then hung them up to dry.
Michelle says
Ate lunch at home 🙂

I bought a huge shipment of toilet paper on Amazon using giftcards from Swagbucks and Bing rewards. I know it’s not an exciting purchase but I’m fine with that because it something that me and my family use multiple times a day and it didn’t cost me anything.
I also ate lunch at home instead of going out to eat.

getting ready to mail in a rebate for a car seat (that we bought on sale) for our 7 month old. (He’s big for his age, already 20 pounds and 28 inches long, and has almost grown out of his infant car seat.) 🙂 It’s a convertible car seat, so we’ll use it rear facing for now and then turn it around after he’s one and it should last us until he needs a booster seat when he’s 4.

We too cut the cord on cable a few months ago, which was very difficult for the college football lovers in our household. Luckily, our neighbor told us about a website called wiziwig.tv. The quality isn’t the BEST in relation to having cable but it’s free and it allows us to watch tons of different sports throughout the year!!

My 14 year old son outgrew the shoes he uses to referee soccer. He has to wear all black shoes or cleats. He happened to have a pair of shoes that fit and were mostly black but had neon green swooshes and soles. I used some black spray paint that we already had and sprayed both shoes. They look awesome! No money spent.

We saved money today by going to yard sales before work. Instead of buying new, we got an exercise mat (required for upcoming childbirth classes), a bag of baby clothes (bibs, hats, onesies, sleepers, dresses, etc) for $5, and Disney DVDs for 50 cents each! After work, we are going to watch a football game at my in-laws’ house (we cancelled our cable service at home), and then go home and work on installing laminate flooring in our living room (instead of paying to have it installed).

But buying sewing patterns can add up quickly, so for now I’m checking out free online tutorials for how to sew skirts instead of investing in the $15 pattern. They had a breakfast buffet at work for a meeting we were having. When it was over, there was extra food left and they were offering it to whoever wanted some. I grabbed a few bagels and cream cheese packets, as well as some fresh fruit to take home. It was enough for another breakfast for my hubby and me!

I saved money by shopping at our local whole foods that is moving locations. Not only did they have items on sale but then they had a extra percentage off, then I got a case to get extra 10% off and then stacked with a coupon. I had been needing to purchase a few items from The Body Shop online. Yesterday, I “the deals” all seemed to align, and I took advantage of several to purchase what I needed from them. Here are the deals I used:
* An additional 5% off The Body Shop gift cards on Raise.com… making a $50 gift card $45.18. I purchased this gift card before doing my shopping. My e-code arrived within 1 hour of purchasing.
* An additional 8% cash back for shopping via Ebates
* An additional 10% off my purchase for having The Body Shop rewards card (not a credit card)
* Free shipping on my purchase
* A free full-size product at check-out with a $50 purchase (which I was planning to make)
* To my pleasant surprise, I had reached enough rewards points after my purchase to earn me a $20 credit off my next purchase
All in all, I got some great products for myself, Christmas gifts, and a few bars of soap to stuff in the Operation Christmas Child shoebox this winter. 🙂

Today we saved by changing the time we met friends at our favorite pizza buffet. We had plans to meet a group of people at a pizza restaurant, and if you wait about two hours after the dinner rush hour, the restaueant runs a “late dinner” special with the price dropped by half (as they begin cleaning and removing some of the cold foods). It’s still a great deal, though, as they keep the pizza buffet fully stocked until close and will place any special ordered pizza request on the buffet. So our family of 5– 3 adults (husband and I and teen daughter) and two children got a wonderful buffet (including drinks and dessert) for only $30. We rarely eat there unless someone requests it for a special birthday dinner as it usually costs twice that amount!
Jenna says
Took my lunch to work!

$1100 is what I saved this week by matching receipts to our insurance claim recaps from our health insurance. We met our deductible and I was putting away receipts. I took a closer look at insurance allowed amounts as a result of contractual agreements with approved providers and matched those with what was paid by our insurance. I noticed in two scenarios that insurance payments had been made to two different facilities. The insurance on our behalf got on the phone in a 3 way call to reinforce their contractual allowed amounts. The result-we are getting any surplus deposited back into our health savings account.
Moral:Follow your receipts and match with contractual allowed amounts, follow your deductible.
( In both cases, I had made calls to follow up as to whether or not our payment had been received. In both cases neither facility offered info about having a credit to our account.)
Meagan says
I cooked dinner at home, even though my husband is out of town all weekend and I was tired from an all-day meeting. Ordering a pizza would have been SO much easier. And then we watched a movie we checked out from our library for free.

I was able to save in a couple of ways. My husband hunts (during the proper season) for game meat to help feed our family of 5. That in its self saves us on our grocery bill each week. We also process the meat ourselves instead of paying someone. I just purchased a seasoning and packing kit to make polish sausage with the meat we already have in our freezer. It was $18 for the kit and makes 25 pounds of meat. That’s $.72 a pound. Far less then the $2.29 a pound at our local store. I was also able to get a $10 off coupon on the order for getting a free catalog sent to us. That covered all of the shipping on the order.

I’ve been working a second job of babysitting, I get $40 for the 2 hours I’m there once a week. and I’ve been using just that money for groceries, not touching my actual work paycheck at all (helping to save several hundred a month towards a new car.)
Anyways, I babysat once last week, not at all this week, and not again until next Thursday. So I had exactly $17 in cash, plus some random change in my purse. I looked at Target coupon matchups, made a list and my $29 worth of items only cost me $15.51! I was able to get several things including 2 gallons of milk, a dozen eggs, bread, plus 5 more items.

This may be silly, but my son has been having a rough time in school. We’ve been really working on learning self control. He worked hard all week and on Friday he earned high behavior honors in his class. We were so proud of him. As a reward he wanted to go and get ice cream. Instead, we hit up Sonic because it was HAPPY HOUR! Hooray for half price slushies. For less than $2 we were able to get all the kids a treat and celebrate a fun achievement for my son.

I saved by making a meal for a new mom using what we already had, rather than shopping for a completely different meal or ordering out a meal for them.
I doubled our main dinner dish (made with marked down meat), added in some on sale veggies from our freezer, and made a dessert using a premade mix we had gotten on mark down. Added some rice to round out the meal. It cost me about $5. Then we delivered it as a family.

I recently switched to a new PCP, and the old office was going to charge me $25 to release my medical records. I called the office and asked if I picked them up in person, they would waive the fee. They said, “yes!”, and my husband, who was going there anyway for a routine appointment, brought them home. I then dropped them off at my new dr. office on my way to get some groceries. Never hurts to ask, and in this case, it saved me $25!!

Vegan cupcakes at a vegan bakery ($3.50 a piece). Well last night instead of going out for dessert we made egg free cupcakes at home with homemade buttercream. Everything we used was organic and we saved a few dollars because we usually would buy 3 cupcakes. The best part is we made 12 cupcakes and still saved!

We have been on a quest for apples for a while now. We brought some home from a family trip last month. (off my aunt’s tree) but in our area the trees just did not produce like last year. Sure I could pay $10/bag for seconds, but I prefer to find old trees that are not sprayed and help out someone by cleaning up the fallen ones too! And then they are free :). Today at the library someone asked if I knew anyone wanting apples….yup! So we went and picked up and picked 6 boxes of good apples and picked up three wagons of bad ones to feed their pigs. A total win for both of us! And free all the way around….already started making sauce yesterday with my $1 Squeezo!

I saved money by avoiding the “nothing to wear curse” Went to a class reunion last night, (30 years!!!!!) This ended up being kind of long, sorry. But it was a very satisfying day of saving for me!
I purchased a skien of yarn I needed to finish a blanket for my little baby blanket making business with a 50% off coupon I received as a text today.
I purchased the second book in a series by one of our favorite authors, hardback $3.99, which was discounted for having a small tear in the dust jacket.
I bought $23 worth of grocery but in essence only spent $10. This was the breakdown of that purchase: I received a tub of honey butter for free (worth $2.39) by buying to bags of frozen scones – 2/$7, which I was already considering buying. Eggs were on sale for $1.25 a dozen, I purchased two. And I will receive a rebate for the four Bar S items I purchased once I send in the rebate form I believe I found on this site. Not bad for my first shopping trip out since my daughter was put in a brace last week for her hip dysplasia!
I worked on cutting out the final pieces for the quilt I’m making for my bed. I’m using fabric my mom so generously gave me out of her stash, so the project will be almost free for me.
Oh and I made another batch of homemade floor wipes instead of buying expensive replacement swifter wipes. And used all homemade cleaners today instead of any store bought ones as I caught up on my daily cleaning schedule.
Final one I promise. I made dinner with some leftovers in the fridge. Plus had to make some substitute ketchup out of tomato paste since I had no more ketchup in my food storage and didn’t want to waste the the and money to go back to the store tonight.
Jere Ann says
We bought tickets for major league soccer at a charity auction for my husband and I, but they moved the match date to a day we couldn’t go. We’re missionaries in Thailand and normally run to our fresh produce market 2 times a week (right across the street). We decided to wait until today (Saturday) to go and scored better prices on produce! We have been without cable for a few years and used your same method to watch the Royals big win tonight! My husband is a huge baseball fan (played in college), but we haven’t had cable for months. He was bumming about not being able to watch the game tonight. I told him we could always turn the cable back on, but neither of us really wanted to do that ($$ and honestly, we just don’t miss having it except for a few sporting events). Then he remembered MLB.com. He saw he could get it for $9.99 for the rest of the season with no blackouts. $10 is much cheaper than our monthly cable bill!! He was disappointed with the camera angle, but he got to watch the game!
Crystal Paine says
Yay!!
The camera angles aren’t that great, but they are good enough to get a good idea of what’s going on… we like to try different cameras and sometimes we do the quad screen — depending upon which cameras are running.
Analisa says

And we used hotel points that my husband earned through work to book a hotel for the night. I packed all of our snacks and breastfed the baby.

Starting with an internet search and following up with phone calls saved me 20.00/month on a storage unit. This particular manager had five units available and so she cut me a deal. AND she will honor the standing offer that they have of only charging half-rent on the second month’s rent. The few hours I spent on research paid off.
I DO know that storage units are an expensive option and to be avoided at all costs, if at all possible. Unfortunately, I moved my household belongings 160 miles and found out when I arrived that I didn’t have a place to stay after all. A storage unit is my only option until I can find a new rental home.
Lsort says

Julie says
I saved money today by NOT going to the store. I was going to go and price match a few items that we didn’t really need, but I thought might be a good deal. Then I reviewed them and realized that we didn’t normally eat those foods and to go to the store when I had the opportunity – most likely during a hungry time for me- would lead me to spend more than I wanted. So we will make do for another week on what we have, which is plenty!
