I find a lot of great ideas on Pinterest… but pinning something doesn’t do anything unless I actually, you know, try the idea. So I thought it’d be fun to challenge myself to do at least one Pinterest experiment every week — and blog my results.
I can’t promise that I’ll always have a Pinterest Experiment post up each week, because you know how I sometimes get distracted or on blog tangents. But I’m at least going to try. By the way, you can follow my personal Pinterest account here, if you’re interested.
Silas and I whipped up some Sugar Hand Scrub tonight. I had gotten a bottle of Dawn Hand Renewal for $0.50 at Dillon’s recently and was excited to use it to make this recipe.
I only had raw sugar on hand so my end result wasn’t as pretty as it would have been with white sugar, but this stuff works and smells so good.
Someone mentioned putting a few drops of peppermint oil in the scrub and I think that would make this even more amazing!
If you wanted to make it for gifts, I’d recommend putting more sugar in it so that it’s not as watery. This should help it keep a good consistency and last longer.
Have you tried any ideas or recipes you’ve found on Pinterest recently? If so, I’d love to hear how they worked out for you. Feel free to leave your blog link in the comments if you blogged about your experiment!

I make my own sugar scrub and sell it in my Etsy shop! It is Brown Sugar Vanilla scent, and it has olive oil to help moisturize your skin. I just love it! I used it on my feet a TON this summer, because wearing flip flops all the time my feet get dirty and rough and just plain gross. 🙂
Here is the link is anyone is interested. https://www.etsy.com/listing/92650125/brown-sugar-vanilla-sugar-scrub
Now I can’t wait to try this one!

Do you have any ideas what to put it in to look really cute for a gift?

Blessings!

Good morning. First comment here. I look forward to navigating your site. Can someone tell me about “Dillon’s”. I have never seen Dawn on sale even for .50, so I’m really interested in where I can find prices this low. I live in Eastern North Carolina, so I’m limited in my choices, but don’t mind driving a bit to save a lot; would purchase in bulk (like they had to do in the old days 🙂 )
Thanks.
Sandra

It’s a Kroger store — and it was $1.49 (regular price). I used a $0.50/1 coupon that doubled to get it for $0.49. I hope that helps!
Welcome, by the way!

Sandra, I live in North Carolina(Piedmont). You can get deals like this at Harris Teeter. They often have Dawn on sale, and they double coupons up to 99 cents every day. They also have Super Double Coupon days and Triple Coupon Days where those coupons go even further. Super Double Coupon days will often allow a coupon up to $1.98 to be doubled. Triple Coupon Days allow coupons to be tripled, up to $.99. Moneysavingmom has a page for Harris Teeter deals(https://moneysavingmom.com/store_deals/category/harris-teeter). Southernsavers.com also has a Harris Teeter page dedicated to all the sales each week, and she also matches up coupons for that store as well(http://www.southernsavers.com/category/harris-teeter/). I hope this helps. 😉

I love Pinterest. I have tried many things from them and had success on most of them. The most recent try was homemade laundry soap. http://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2012/08/make-a-years-worth-of-laundry-soap.html It worked great and I love the idea of not having to buy soap for so long. My next project will be homemade nutella. I just bought the hazelnuts yesterday so plan to make some in the next few days. http://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2012/09/how-to-make-your-own-homemade-gluten-free-nutella.html

I made this same scrub a few weeks ago and I love it! I’m addicted to Mary Kay’s Soft Hands but it’s never in my budget – but I had everything on hand to make this. If you keep it in a baby food jar the mixture keeps for a long time!

I made a “starry cave” out of a cardboard box recently…the inspiration for it coming from Pinterest and my kids loved it! http://www.whatilivefor.net/2012/08/starry-cave.html

I vowed off of social media sites where I have my own account so I rely on pinterest experiments from my fav. bloggers. I will definitely be making this as this is the kind CVS had for .25 a couple of weeks ago. It has been nice to have some cheap soap deals recently so I can do this!

I worked at Bath and Body Works one year for extra money for Christmas and their sugar scrub comes with more of an oil than a soap. I’m wondering if there might be some kind of oil to add to the jar for softening even more. Plus I’m not a fan of the scent of the dawn hand renewal.
Emily says
I mix my sugar with coconut oil. It moisturizes your skin and smells great! I used to buy the B&BW version, but started making this much cheaper alternative.
Jillian K. says
That looks nice, and like a good way to use up on sale soap!
We made sidewalk paints recently. It was so much fun!

Great idea! I am so going to get some glass jars and make cute labels to put this in for Christmas gifts! Thank you!

What keeps the sugar from dissolving in the soap or does it dissolve?
Lea Stormhammer says
There’s too much sugar compared to the amount of soap/liquid, so it’s oversaturated and won’t dissolve much. Add water (to wash or rinse off) and eventually it will dissolve. I imagine if you let it sit a long time (months, etc.) it will eventually semi-dissolve itself into equal parts soap/liquid and sugar, but for shorter-term, it should be just fine.
Great Question!

I’ve always used sugar, grapeseed oil and an essential oil to make sugar scrubs (grapeseed oil absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave your skin greasy). I really don’t see the point in using soap in the mix, but I guess it could work as a sugar scrub/cleanser. I just prefer my scrubs to be all natural!
Crystal H. says
I’ve made this and love it! My husband always has grease on his hands from working on his road bike so he loves it too. I added some eucalyptus essential oil and it’s amazing.

This is kind of a silly question, but where did you get those cute placemats? 🙂

Fun! I have this pinned and planned for Christmas gifts. 🙂 Great to hear it’s a good choice!
Amanda says
I pinned this a while ago and keep meaning to pick up a bottle of the Dawn hand renewal. Now I am wanting to make it even more 🙂
Carla says
We are planning on making this for Christmas gifts at our annual “craft ” day at church.
Where do you buy peppermint oil? Also where can I buy little spoons? I need about 20, not 3 ,000 as I saw on line! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Kelly says
You can get all sorts of oil in craft stores, or a place that sells vitamins/healthy stuff.
Erica says
You might check a restuarant supply store for little spoons. They sometimes have them for places that give out samples. Or, find your favorite ice cream place and ask them if they will sell you sample size spoons.
Emily says
Use a popsicle stick instead of a spoon?
Amanda says
This is too funny you posted on Facebook! I literally just pinned it on Pinterest!!! haha! I think this will make some awesome frugal Christmas gifts for teachers and family : )

I have not tried anything new recently that I have found on pinterest. But this does look like it would be great to try. I know my mom in law would really like it.
