More sad news today: Cincinnati-area Meijer stores will end their double coupon program on August 25, 2013. Here’s a snippet from a news story:
Three months after Kroger stopped doubling coupons, Cincinnati-area Meijer stores are ending their double coupons this month.
A post from the store’s Facebook account says they’re ending double coupons Aug. 25 and shifting resources to mPerks digital coupons.
Meijer says it’s expanding mPerks to include rewards for the pharmacy, and bigger discounts on other items.
The store will still accept coupons at face value.
Meijer eliminated double coupons in Michigan and other areas earlier this year.

Meijer stopped doubling in our section of Michigan a while ago, then all of a sudden they are now building a new store (to replace their old one) and expanding into new areas. Guess who’s paying for all those upgrades… us.
I’m glad more people will be getting jobs, but I won’t be shopping at Meijer anymore, between the coupon situation and bad service I’m just done. We just had a new ValuLand (like an Aldi) open and they are now getting ALL of my business. Great store and workers.

I’m just expecting things like this to hit my area with our local Krogers. When I was growing up (starts to date herself here) my mom would clip double coupons and triple coupons out of the ad on special days. Those were a big deal back then. I also remember mom sending myself and my father into the grocery store along with herself and we’d all have to walk in separately to do transactions.
I live in the mid-south region for Kroger and I’m just waiting. The closest Meijer to me I believe in about 2 hours away.
You know the sad thing is if they continue at this rate it’s going to hurt the community. I know people just now starting to get into couponing (silly people always had excuses) because they can’t stretch their dollar any other way. The biggest problem seriously was these ‘extreme’ couponers that got all this recognition. Personally I believe they did more to hurt the couponing community than anyone else. But that’s just my belief.

The thing that really stinks is that MPerks is the sorriest excuse for a store rewards system that there is. You have to carefully look at the bottom of every mperk to determine whether it is a “store coupon” or a “manufacturers coupon”. If it says manufacturers coupon, which a lot of them do, you cannot use a manufacturers coupon along with the MPerk because you are essentially already using a manufacturers coupon. The thing that bothers me about that is that if it is a manufacturers coupon, that makes it not a “Meijer Perk”, but a manufacturers perk and therefore it should not even be advertised as an mperk. It’s kinda sneaky if you ask me. For example, about a month ago I clipped an Mperk for $3 off a kids Brita filter bottle and I also had a coupon from the paper. I was going to be able to get the bottle for less than $1. Sweet deal! Only, when I got to the self-checkout it gave a screen prompt when I used my coupon asking whether I wanted to use the coupon OR the Mperk. I called the clerk over and explained that I had doubled up like this before and he said that the Mperk was essentially the same exact manufacturers coupon that I had in my hand and that I was not allowed to use both. When I got home and checked the coupon policies, sure enough, I found that some of the Mperks were manufacturers coupons. Sneaky, sneaky, sneaky!

I’m so glad I live in the south right now! I can double at Publix and Bi-lo! But my husband and I love the north and will eventually move back up there. Hearing that now both Kroger and Miejer don’t double is really disappointing. I wish Public would go to Michigan!

Yes — I agree. I’m finding the Pavilions/Vons “Just 4 U” program to be the exact same way. They’re mostly manufacturer’s coupons, not store coupons, so no stacking. Which means no deal!

It was only a matter of time. I’ve been doing more and more of my shopping at Aldi and enjoying a much lower grocery bill without the hassle of coupons. I cook mostly from scratch, so there are few food items I can use a coupon for.
MSM got me interested in Aldi again, she is always posting pics of her shopping trips there.

We don’t have the double coupon program here in St. Charles, IL. But Meijer will accept both a manufacturer’s and a store (i.e. Meijer, Target, Jewel-Osco, Dominick’s) coupon on each item. The coupon from a competing store just cannot be for one of it’s own store brands (i.e. Archer Farms from Target). I just used a Meijer coupon for $1.00 off and an Alcon manufacturer’s coupon for $2.00 off any one 10 oz.+ bottle of the Alcon Pure Moist lens solution for a total of $3.00 off. I think that’s pretty good!

I stopped shopping regularly at the grocery store in my area that stopped doubling coupons. My advice: Take your money and coupons to other stores instead.

Meijer is ending double coupons in all of it’s stores as of Aug 25th

For those who might be sad, FYI, we’ve never had any stores that double/triple coupons around here. Ever. I’ve looked for years – and I live in a large metro area.
So at least you had it for a while. 🙂

We do not have it here either. Smith’s did a sale twice where they doubled but it has never been a regular thing. I wish I would have had the opportunity to have it for awhile.

Everyone’s ending doubles, couponing will become less appealing to many who currently coupon, and eventually stores will be fighting for market share and perhaps reinstate doubling to edge out their competitors. Then it begins again. 🙂

Sorry for all you Meijer fans. I’ve only been in the store once because I was shopping for a friend in the suburbs of Chicago. The closest Meijer to my home is 35 miles away. I think it’s similar to Ultra Foods.

I live in Michigan and noticed the doubling had stopped BUT the other day my coupons doubled again! It was a 25 cent coupon. Maybe it is only on special days because my coupons do not always double and they have never doubled over 50 cents at Meijer.

I noticed several weeks ago Meijers prices were getting higher. Not as good of sales. It doesn’t surprise me at all. They think they are giving us something by doing the MPerks. It only saves them money by not doubling the coupons. Old saying is “just because someone else is doing it doesn’t mean you need to.” And I cannot believe that people would prefer MPerks over doubling coupons.

They are also ending doubles in Columbus, OH. It was on our news and they confirmed it on their Facebook page. Boo!

Based on the article I read, this includes 202 stores in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. So I think that is likely all of the Meijer stores who hadn’t stopped doubling already.
