She’s started loving helping me in the kitchen. Here she is helping me make French Toast.
I was excited to find a good deal on strawberries after produce deals have been kind of far and few between.
And I found this whole cart full of mandarins marked date to $0.99/bag!
Speaking of produce deals, I also found something I don’t ever think I’ve ever seen before at Kroger — marked down frozen veggies! We don’t usually buy okra, but I went ahead and bought it and am going to try using it in smoothies. I’ve heard you can’t even tell — but we’ll see!
Here’s what I got for $70.23!

Okra is eaten a lot here. It’s cooked in a sauce and served over rice. I’ve grown to love it. I also like pickled okra, but I’ve never made that myself.
Diane says
I’ve made pickled okra quite a few times. It is not hard to do.
Chris says
You may enjoy this – my family does – fry okra in some bacon grease, it is delicious with scrambled eggs and cheese added.

I like my okra pan fried in a skillet, but you could always make jambalaya or gumbo and use it. Maybe thaw it, dry it on paper towels and try breading it to fry it? 🤷🏼♀️ I typically just put olive oil in a pan and coat the whole pods in olive oil and fry it that way
Diane says
I grow okra and my favorite way to prepare it is roasted in cast iron with a little olive oil and salt. If you like it in smoothies though please share that. It never occurred to me to use it like that and doesn’t sound appealing but to each his own.

Okra is great pan fried on a cast iron skillet!
Crystal Paine says
Does it work well frozen, though? I was wondering if it would be slimy?
Beth says
Yes, you can fry it from frozen. I usually thaw it first (throw it in the microwave for a minute or two). Then toss it in a mix of flour and cornmeal and whatever spices you like. The “slimy” part makes it’s own wet coating so you don’t need milk. Then pan fry at a pretty high heat. I usually put a half inch or so of oil in a cast iron skillet and stir/turn them about half way through.
We also like it baked/roasted with cubed potatoes, shrimp and smoked sausage seasoned with jerk seasoning. Cook the potatoes for a while first, then add the okra and sausage. Add the shrimp towards the very end.

Works fine in smoothies, not slimy. Trim Healthy Mama sings it’s praises and has several smoothie recipes with okra.
Jennifer says
I can’t imagine okra being good in a smoothie. I grew up on it fried which I love. Any other way and okra is slimy. Can’t wait to hear how you use it!
Crystal Paine says
I’ve heard that if you have a high-powered blender and you blend it really fine, you can’t taste it at all and it just makes it creamy. We’ll see!
Wendi Bollinger says
Try roasting your okra! Yum!
Crystal Paine says
Does it work well frozen or is it slimy?
Jennifer B. says
Yes, roast frozen okra tossed with a bit of olive oil and salt and pepper at 425 degrees F on a cookie sheet for about 20 minutes, flipping halfway. It will taste like it is breaded without being coated in anything. Delicious!
