Beka from Uncoventional Homemaker emailed in her shopping trip today and I thought it was such a great example of how you can find great buys on organic produce. Here’s what she said:
I normally don’t shop at Kroger as we only buy organic groceries. But they have a small organic selection and it’s close to home so I thought I’d stop in. Boy, am I glad I did!
They had an overstock of organic seedless grapes. So as a manager’s special, they marked them down to $0.50 a pound! That’s a steal on organic grapes!
I also don’t normally go through clearance produce, it seems every time I do look it’s all terribly wilted. But some bell peppers caught my eye.
I did a quick peek just to see if they were organic or not and they were! And they really weren’t all that wilted at all!
I rooted through their whole big shelf of clearance produce and found nine packages of organic bell peppers. Three of them in each bag at $0.99 a bag! Organic bell peppers are usually $2.49 each!
Here’s what I got:
25 Organic Bell Peppers (and two conventional ones were mixed in there also) — $8.91 total
17.44 pounds of Organic Seedless Grapes — $8.72 total
On my receipts, the savings shows up as $108.47!! Wow! This has never happened to me before!(My full purchase is not in this picture as my family devoured half a colander of grapes and quite a few bell peppers before I thought to take a picture.)
I have four children so I have no doubt we’ll eat all the grapes. But we own a juicer and will gladly enjoy some fresh grape juice if we can’t finish eating them before they start going bad.
We’ll make some meals with fresh bell peppers now as well as snack on them like crazy. I’m going to freeze extra bell pepper strips for stir-fry’s and soups later on. I also picked up another 16 pounds of grapes for other moms that I called while I was in the store — as I wanted to share the blessing!

Yes, we’ll freeze some of these grapes! Thanks everyone for suggesting that, we’re on it. And yes, they’ll juice wonderfully also.

What a great deal on grapes! One thing that I love to do when I find a good deal on grapes is wash them, take them off the stems, and then freeze them. Frozen grapes are delicious and my kids love them!

I thought I was the only one who called others when I saw great deal! Thank you for sharing that little detail. Also, our stores never ever have clearance produce they throw it all away! I have suggested buying some before and they say they “have” to throw it away. It kills me.

Keiva- the area that we live in also throws it away. I think it has to do with the Department of Agriculture in the area. I know that some of the Wal-Marts (in the area we live in) actually donate the stuff that is going bad to a large soup kitchen in the area. While it would be nice to catch a great deal, I am glad it doesn’t get totally wasted. I have had little luck haggling at the farmers market. I would love to find grapes for 0.50 a lb., if we buy them it is 1.88 a lb! But we use grapes in chicken salad and I freeze them and use as an ice pack for kids lunches and then the have a cold sweet snack!

Just curious…can you make juice from regular grapes? I thought you had to have concord grapes for that. Same for jam (someone had suggested that as an option).

I love it when I can find organic produce at such a good buy. We have Fred Meyer stores here and I very rarely see any good markdowns on produce. But we do have a closeout grocery store that will often have organic produce at very good prices. Sometimes it’s a little wilted but others times the produce looks great.
My best buys on organic produce have been organic red cherries at $.99 a pound. I froze a bunch. I also found organic strawberries a couple of week ago for $.50 a pound. They were so sweet and yummy.

I love the dollar rack in my Kroger produce section!

Try freezing the grapes. My family loves them. There like little popsicles.

I always check the organics at my local Kroger but not enough people buy organic at my store near me so they carry small amounts. I have been able to get some organic produce on markdown but nothing like the above deals. I would have loved to get either of those deals. I have never been fond of frozen grapes but I probably would have made grape jam with the leftovers. What a great score!
Cheryl says
You can freeze grapes whole and snack on them like mini-popsicles.

Awesome!!

Great buy! Frozen grapes are great for a snack or a smoothie. We have about 30 pounds of organic grapes in our freezer for the winter. We bought them when Whole Foods had a .99/pound sale.

Dang!!! I wish I could get grapes for $0.50 a lb. I always check the manager special areas, but never find that great of a deal!
Robyn says
You can freeze grapes, too, for a yummy snack! 🙂

I love Kroger’s manager specials!!
My Dad loves to munch on frozen grapes as a snack, so that’s an idea too!
Jessica says
I often find manager’s specials in the natural and organic section of Kroger. Last week, I got coconut milk for .39 for a half gallon after manager’s special and a blinkie coupon right above the product. I also got some free almond milk singles after manager’s special and coupons. They had organic dairy milk and organic whipping cream marked down as well. I always walk down that aisle to see what has been marked down, because there are often great prices on things that I can use. I’m not committed to organic and don’t have dietary restrictions, but dairy doesn’t agree with me so I like the dairy alternatives for myself.
